[SOLVED]No sound on Macbook Aluminum (following wiki)

Hello, I'm hoping for some advice on how to get sound out of the speakers on my aluminum macbook pro.
I have been following the ALSA page in the wiki, and my setup appears to check out against the instructions, but when I test with aplay Front_Center.wav, I just don't hear anything.
I will include some output showing the loaded set of device modules at the bottom of this post.  I can also provide the output of amixer, but it is pretty long, so I'll leave it out until it is requested.
If I continue following the wiki, then one last thing that I should try is running alsaconf.  However, when I do this, I am presented with a prompt to the effect that it might make my system unstable, so I thought it best to check here first.
I expect that, if going all the way through the last-ditch alsaconf step were necessary, then something would have been mentioned about it on the macbook wiki page, so I'm inclined to think I've done something wrong in a preceding step, though I don't know what that might be.
Thanks for your time, everyone.
Output is here:

I have read the macbook wiki page. As well as that for specifically the aluminum macbook pro.
Except for adding an option in modprobe.conf, they just direct to the standard ALSA page.  In the wiki, there are several recommendations for the option line in the modprobe.conf file including
options snd_hda_intel model=intel-mac-auto
options snd_hda_intel model=mbp3
options snd_hda_intel model=mb5
I have tried all of these with the same result.

so then I tried installing without efi and when i get to bootloader like syslinux i get error FAILED to set attribute Legacy BIOS Bootable
and yes, i followed wiki to the letter. i installed gptfdisk etc.
I cant get UEFI to work and it wont let me do legacy bios either. I'm at a loss. I've been reading wiki's for the last 3 hours... any ideas?
i just noticed 2 boot options, usb and uefi, selected uefi and got "Error: Failed to install override security policy: (14) not found"

    ok so I did this
    # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdz
    //cleans the usb drive
    # fdisk /dev/sdz
// press m and read the help, make a partition, make it bootable
// you have to press (double check anyway):
    // n, p, 1, <enter>, <enter>, a, 1, t, b, w
    # mkfs.vfat /dev/sdz1
    // formatting
    but when I get to
    sudo cp -a /mnt/iso/* /mnt/usb
    it says:
cp: error writing ‘/mnt/usb/EFI/archiso/efiboot.img’: No space left on device
cp: failed to extend ‘/mnt/usb/EFI/archiso/efiboot.img’: No space left on device

cp: cannot create directory ‘/mnt/usb/isolinux’: No space left on device
cp: cannot create directory ‘/mnt/usb/loader’: No space left on device
    also, when I do:
    sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt/usb
    I get: mount: /dev/sdb is write-protected, mounting read-only
is this normal? or does this mean the usb is messed up? I followed the directions here extactly: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=62268
alright, formatted usb in windows then it worked. now im trying to change the UUID in gparted per the wiki and I am following http://gparted.org/display-doc.php?name … ition-uuid
the option is greyed out, the drive is unmounted as per the instructions. I cannot change the UUID to ARCH_2014XX (ARCH_201410) in my case. stuck again...

  • New MacBook (Aluminum), new Time Capsule (Dual-Band), backups not working

My Mom got a new (refurbished) 13.3" MacBook (Aluminum) and new (not refurbished) Time Capsule 500 GB (Dual-Band.) The Time Capsule is working great for wireless internet and we can copy files to and from it, but Time Machine backups are not working. I enabled Time Machine, selected her TC, and then when it tries to backup it sits at the preparing stage for a little while and then gives a very unhelpful "the backup failed" message. Unfortunately I don't have the exact error message, but it never gets out of the preparing phase. It doesn't stay in preparing forever, it only stays there for a minute or so before it gives up and reports the backup failed message and stops. It's unclear to me, searching these forums, if this problem is the same as others are reporting.
I've tried turning off Time Machine and back on, removing and reselecting the Time Capsule, etc. Nothing makes a difference. There are no backup files on the TC - it's brand new.
This happened out of the box, but I also tried installing the latest Time Capsule firmware. It didn't help.

Apple needs to create a configuration tool that configures all the Apple devices one owns by creating a network diagram using drag and drop symbols...
Sounds like a cool suggestion. If you want Apple to hear it, go to www.apple.com/feedback/timecapsule.html

  • How do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

how do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

You don't. You may find some third-party software that will, however. Try Auto Mute.
    Alternatively, you can try this:
I think this is the best and simplest solution. Open a Terminal window and type (or copy/paste) the following to turn down the startup noise:
         sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%00"
    Press RETURN.
And to restore it to the original value type:
         sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
    Press RETURN.
    That's all folks.

  • Getting sound from macbook to work on HDTV

Hi, I'm having problems getting sound from my macbook aluminum 13" to my tv. The tv is a Samsung R8 Series 37" LE37R87BD HD. i got picture up by running a dvi to hdmi to the tv. i have no problem with picture but i can't get any sound. I tried 3.5mm jack from macbook to tv 3.5mm jack. got no sound. so bought a 3.5mm Jack to 2 x RCA and still got no sound. i even ran the the jack through my home cinema system and to no luck.
is anyone else having this problem and is there a solution?

Forgive what may be a dumb question on my part, but you are using the correct audio jack on your MacBook? The output would be the one closest to the security slot, farthest from the display/USB ports of the two 3.5mm/optical jacks. Also check the Output tab of the Sound system preferences to make sure that the Headphones/Line output is selected. It will probably be the only output shown, but double-check just to make sure.
Note that not all TVs will work with an auxiliary audio input when the video input is set to HDMI. Check your TV's documentation to see if it can split the video and audio input to different sources. That wouldn't, of course, explain why your audio amplifier isn't getting signal either.

  • Macbook Aluminum to VGA Output

I have a Macbook Aluminum and I am trying to output that to my TV. I have bought the miniPort to VGA adapter and hooked it up to my LCD TV with a VGA input. When this happens, I am only able to see my desktop background and nothing else. It will not show me my HD or Safari windows or mouse cursor or anything else. Anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening??

    Then it's a mini-->DVI and then DVI--HDMI/DVI-->DVI or
    mini-->VGA and then VGA-->VGA
There are also a composite and s-Video, but that's not HD.
You can get the mini cables at apple.com, an apple store and I believe Best Buy. Note that there have been some problems reported in buying mini-->DVI cables that are non Apple.
Also, whatever you get, you will need a separate cable from your headset jack-->L/R RCA plugs for the sound with all options.

  • [SOLVED] No sound with phonon-vlc

I have recently installed Arch Linux and everything's going pretty nice (awesome documentation btw) except for the sound.
I am using the VLC backend for Phonon.
    I have two sound cards:
    -Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
    -Integrated on ATI Radeon HD-4850
I'm using the former. The settings for Phonon detect lists a lot of Audigy2 devices.
When I booted up and logged in, sometimes sound worked, sometimes it didn't.
Everytime I logged in Phonon said an audio device has been removed (lie) and asked me if it can forget it. I once clicked yes. Now there's never any sound.
I have looked at the troubleshooting page in the wiki and there was a solution for the first problem ("Random Lack of Sound on Startup"), I followed the instructions and created /etc/asound.conf and put this in it:
    ctl.dmixer {
    type hw
    card Audigy2
    It didn't do much good.
    When I run speaker-test, I get this:
    speaker-test 1.0.24.2
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
    Any help is much appreciated.
EDIT: The problem was not with Phonon. The problem was that ALSA sometimes chose the wrong sound card as default.

I'm having the same problem (after upgrading), but your trick doesn't help. I only have one device anyway:
    # cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Audigy2 ]: Audigy2 - SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P]
    SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P] (rev.4, serial:0x10021102) at 0x9000, irq 19
Also, I do have sound in a TTY console, but applications started in KDE (either in Konsole or graphically) don't have sound. When I start audacious, it says:
ALSA error: snd_mixer_attach failed: No such file or directory.
ALSA error: snd_pcm_open failed: No such file or directory.

  • [SOLVED] No sound after update

    Hello Arch-Community,
unfortunately my sound (neither Speakers nor Mic) is not working anymore on my machine. Yesterday evening was everything fine, but I guess after todays update something must have happened.
Unfortunately I don't know which kind of information I should provide you in order to describe my problem.
    Maybe this as a start:
    lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
I hope you can assist me in finding a solution?
    Thx a lot!

    ls /dev/snd
    by-path  controlC1  hwC1D0  hwC1D2  pcmC0D0c  pcmC0D2c  pcmC1D7p  pcmC1D9p  timer  controlC0  hwC0D0  hwC1D1  hwC1D3  pcmC0D0p  pcmC1D3p  pcmC1D8p  seq
Wow! That shows that you have 2 capture devices (those that end with the letter "c"), and a whopping 5 playback devices (those that end with the letter "p") on your box.
So which one(s) is/are "not working"?
Since you don't mention if you're using gstreamer, PulseAudio, OSS, just plain ALSA, or something else to drive your sound... and the connections (HDMI TV speakers, speakers or stereo plugged into an audio jack, etc.) involved... along with which audio application(s) is/are "not working"... there's plenty of room for a confusion factor to totally cause this to take a quick turn straight into the ditch.
But here's some poor ALSA advice... at least it's free.
    First, install the "alsa-utils" package.
Next run the aplay -l command to display all of your playback devices in some crazy English (or your native tongue). Use this to help determine which playback device you want to make the sound come out of.
    and/or...
Run the speaker-test -c 2 -l 1 -D plughw:X,Y command one at a time for each playback device... where you replace the "X" with the Card Number (the number following the capital "C" in the ls command above... so in your case, it's "0" and "1")... and replace the "Y" with the Device Number (the number following the capital "D" in that ls command).
For example... to test the "pcmC1D7p" (Card 1, Device 7) playback device enter:
    speaker-test -c 2 -l 1 -D plughw:1,7
If you've previously set up the Card Number correctly using the alsamixer command (unmuted the channels, raised the volume, etc.), then you should hear sound during one of those speaker-test runs. You do start the alsamixer command with the "-c" option (or use the F6 key within alsamixer) don't you?
After you've determined which Card and Device you wish to use (most of the time), and if you intend to just use ALSA to drive your sound, then read the ALSA wiki(s) on the Arch and other pages about setting up the ALSA "Default" device in an ALSA configuration file... or configure each of your sound applications with the sound device to use.
When all that's finished, see the arecord man page to fiddle around with your two capture (audio input) devices.
Also, since you have two sound cards, check the wiki(s) about how to set up "options snd slots=" in a /etc/modprobe.d/ configuration file so that the Card Numbers don't swap around on you between system boots.
One last thing; be aware that /etc/modules.conf is/has being/been depreciated in favor of /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf files. See the "modprobe.conf" man page.
Or... you can simply ignore this post.

  • Trying to get Xgl working following Wiki docs

    Hi all,
I downloaded Xgl stuff from shadowhand's repo and am trying to get it work now with Gnome or KDE. I can run
    startxgl 1 gnome nvidia
and play with jelly windows, so Xgl is in principle running.
Next I tried to follow the suggestions given in Arch Wiki and let GDM/KDM run compiz. However, I had lo luck in that.
First, for GDM the wiki advises to modify /opt/gnome/etc/gdm/gdm.conf. I do not have this file, it is does not come with gdm package. I copied the file from abs tree (it was there), but modifying it following Wiki did not give me fancy windows under Gnome.
Next I tried KDM. Wiki tells me to find and modify the line
    ServerCmd=/usr/bin/X -br
in /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. This time I had the file, but not the line in that file. I added the modified line by hand and did all the rest suggested by Wiki, but it did not give me fancy windows. There was the abovementioned line in the file /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.default, modifying that one had no effect either.
Can anyone please help me sorting this out? What am I doing wrong and what should be the correct way to get, say, KDE working with Xgl?
    Best regards,
    Jan

If you have the gdm package installed, it has to have gdm.conf. So, in this case, do the following:
Remove the gdm.conf you manually copied to your system.
Then as root type: slocate -u
    then locate gdm.conf
Now go and edit the file found with the locate command.
Before all of this though, make sure you do have the gdm package installed first.
Of course I have gdm package installed. Still, no gdm.conf:
    # pacman -Ql gdm | grep conf
    gdm /opt/gnome/etc/gdm/custom.conf
    gdm /opt/gnome/share/gconf/
    gdm /opt/gnome/share/gconf/schemas/
    gdm /opt/gnome/share/gconf/schemas/gdm.schemas
    gdm /opt/gnome/share/gdm/defaults.conf
    gdm /opt/gnome/share/gdm/factory-defaults.conf
Locating gdm.conf gave the following result:
    # slocate -u
    # locate gdm.conf
    /var/abs/extra/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf
so that's the abs version I was talking about.
    Any other ideas?

  • Bluetooth on new MacBook Aluminum and all MacBooks before

I have a new Macbook Aluminum. Bluetooth frequently doesn't recognize my mouse and/or keyboard. Now that I have added a monitor the mouse and keyboard are connected but NOTHING happens on waking even though the bluetooth preferences shows it's connected, so I turn off/on bluetooth and sometimes one or the other actually works. I've had the new Macbook three weeks and bluetooth has disappeared completely four times requiring a battery out reset to get it back. Are there any fixes for a Macbook with what is obviously VISTA bluetooth?

    Hello western:
Since your Macbook is new, punt the problem to Apple. Either take it to an Apple store, or call Applecare with a warranty issue.
The intermittent nature of the problem indicates, to me, a hardware issue.
