[SOLVED]No sound output

Hello everyone. I dont know why my sound isnt working, I have got alsa installed. These seem to be my sound cards:
0 [Generic        ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xf0444000 irq 30
1 [Generic_1      ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xf0440000 irq 16
I have tried some workarounds but none of them worked for me..

  • [SOLVED] External sound output silent since upgrade to GNOME 3.16

    Hi.
I just upgraded my machine to GNOME 3.16 (pacman log). Since then, sound output (whether the GNOME Sound applet test, or Clementine, or YouTube from Firefox)...
... works fine when outputting to the laptop speakers.
... is silent when I plug my external speakers to the computer's jack 3.5" out. I have two outputs, am using the same as before the upgrade but tried both nevertheless, and plugging an mp3 player works.
    Here is my config:
    laptop = Dell XPS 1645
    uname -a = Linux x 3.19.3-3-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Apr 8 14:10:00 CEST 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    pulseaudio = pulseaudio 6.0-1
Any idea? Debug suggestions? Need more info? Thanks for the help.
EDIT: Problem solved after a second reboot :-/

Did you try the fallback initramfs?

  • [Solved] No Sound Output Listed in Gnome Sound Settings

    Hi,
Just recently installed Arch and installed Gnome-Shell.  I have no sound at all and there is no devices listed in the output tab of the sound settings in Gnome Settings.
I can change volume but of course there is no sound.
Any help on how to diagnose and fix this would be appreciated.

I have added this to ~/.asoundrc:
    pcm.dsp {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix"
but to no avail.  I have also installed paprefs and my sound card isn't listed, only the HDMI output which I don't use.  I also tried this:
Using paprefs, simply select "Add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards" from under the "Simultaneous Output" tab. Then, under GNOME's "sound settings", select the simultaneous output you have just created.
    Nothing.
I also tried the verbose option too with the same result.

  • [SOLVED] Sound output works, microphone doesn't, works in Ubuntu

SOLUTION: While I unmuted everything in ALSA, I missed this step from the ALSA wiki: "In order to record from a device, the device's "capture" switch must be set. To do so, run alsamixer, select your microphone and press space."
    What sound card I have:
    # From /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/info
    name: 92HD93BXX Analog
    # From lshw
product: 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller
    vendor: Intel Corporation
    configuration: driver=snd_hda_intel latency=0
    I've tried:
    Setting different models in /etc/modprobe.d/
    Blacklisting snd_intel8x0m
Stopping PulseAudio and using ALSA directly
    I've unmuted everything using alsamixer.
Sound output always worked regardless of what I tried, the mic never worked.
I'm not sure about the correct model and whether it must be specified in /etc/modprobe.d/. Looking at this list of models there is a STAC92HD83* but no STAC92HD93* (see output above). The laptop is a Dell Latitude E6530.
Interestingly, the mic is working fine in Ubuntu 13.04. Listing the snd-hda-intel parameters on both Ubuntu and Arch, it seems as if Ubuntu does not set a model.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the relevant settings that Ubuntu is using? Anything else I should do?

Welcome to the HP Support Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I saw your post regarding the motherboard problems. If the HP service centre has told you that audio port is damaged you will have to replace the motherboard if you want sound. Page 75 of the Maintenance and Service Guide will show you how to replace it. The part number for your motherboard or system board as they are called in notebooks is 683031-501. You can order the part from HP PartsSurfer just search for the part number.

  • Sound output channel keeps switching by itself every few seconds

Hey guys, I have this sound output issue with my Macbook pro 2010 September version that every once in a while, the audio output would keep swapping between headphone, digital output and the speakers when NO headphone or digital output or what so ever is actually plugged in. During this time i am unable to adjust sounds, and my menu bar would become very slow to respond (the sound icon and Soundsource application would stop responding during this time). After a while (could be less than 10 minutes or last to about an hour, it varies), it returns back to normal by itself.
I've read many posts on Apple forum about this issue, but i haven't found a suitable solution. Also, I read that for most, when the audio output doesn't work it would usually be a output socket issue that there is a RED light in the socket. But for me, at times it has a RED light, at times, it doesn't, and sometimes the RED light would switch on and off by itself for a couple of times, depending on how long this issue lasts until it returns to its normal state by itself.
    I have tried:
    1. plugging the headphone into the socket and take it out quickly
    2. Downloading Soundsource: i heard that Soundsource has an option of manually adjusting the sound output channel instead of letting the computer switch automatically, but unfortunately I downloaded the latest (2.5) version of the software and it doesn't have that option on my macbook pro.
    3. I also tried Cmd + Opt + P + R
The result however is that none of this worked.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have both and haven't experienced this at all. Very strange. I do get a lot of random channel changes however when I put my iPad on the remote, the cat walks over it or the dog sits on it.
That being said, I don't use the Samsung remote at all for the TV and never have done. I dislike it and find it unresponsive. I use a different remote to change through the available outputs and the Vision remote for Vision and for switching the TV on and off.

  • [solved] no sound with multimedia apps using Pulseaudio Dummy drive

It seems audio issues are kindof frequent atm, but I couldn't solve the strange issue using the informations provided in the threads nor the wiki
    Issue:
One app plays audio just fine: Deadbeef Audio player, but no activity shows up in Pavucontrol while playing.
Deadbeef uses default Alsa outpput (currently Pulse audio server)
The other multimedia that I use or tried (mplayer, VLC and paplay test.wav) play files with no sound to be heard. Pavucontrol just shows 'dummy output' activity
as for mplayer that is the case with default pulse and alsa audio drivers
    Context:
1/ Recently switched from ALSA to PulseAudio
    Have no  ~/.asoundrc
    2/ First appeared when:
Installed software updates last week. I lazily hoped it will resolve itself with the next update which it didn't so far. None of the packets I updated had linux|pulse|alsa|sound|audio in its name.
Another issue appeared at the same time: no software is able to play any media from the DVD drive. The optical drive itself is well recognized whether by 'lsscsi' or /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
3/ PulseAudio did not start today after booting the system
    $ pulseaudio --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: daemon startup failed
Started OK after commenting "/etc/pulse/default.pa" config line that remap microphone to mono for Skype (as per the Pulseaudio wiki)

Read how to post correctly to get English output.
    kozaki wrote:$ systool -vm relevant_snd_module;
Really? What do you think relevant_snd_module is? When you copy something from another thread, maybe it would be wise to read through it first. I tried to explain that there is no relevant_snd_module, it is a hint to the user, yes you, to use the module that is relevant in users case, which often is snd_hda_intel, which again is also mentioned in the other thread. Read it and correct your post accordingly please.
As for the issue at hand, is module-suspend-on-idle loaded? If so, disable and unload it. Start PA with '-vvvv' switch and post the log here. You might want to try defaulting the configuration for PA, meaning delete your ~/.config/pulse. Does your GPU have a hdmi sound card?
Check if you can get sound output with PA killed through speaker-test:
    speaker-test -c 8 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD PCH DEV 0}"
    speaker-test -c 2 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD PCH DEV 0}"
Both should work launched in that order at the same time.

  • G60-230US Laptop - HDMI cable does not provide sound output only video

HDMI cable does not provide sound output only video. I have the following device adapter - Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chip Set Family, and two sound, video, game controllers - Coexant High Definition  Smartadudio 221 and Intel (R) HIgh Definition Audio HDMI.  I do not see any option but "Speakers" on the Sound "playback" tab.  Not sure what to do to fix

With the cable connected to source, click to select/highlight the Intel HDMI. next click the 'Set default' button.

  • Can I prevent the headphone to take over the sound output?

When I plug in my Apple EarPods in iMac all alternatives of sound in- and output are overruled. I'm using skype, so I'd like my EarPods to be plugged in all the time, but if I do, the incomming call sound - as well as any other sound - is only audible through the EarPods. Isn't there a way to tell the computer to use both the headphones and the internal speakers for sound output, so I can choose to use the EarPods just for Skype calls?

That's what I feared. It didn't solve my problem, but I can stop searching now... thanks.

  • 10.4.7 update cuts sound output on iChat

Since 10.4.7 update to our family's machines, (two macminis intel core duo 1.66 GHz, one mac powerbook 800 power pc g3) we've lost the sound output completely on iChat. We can't hear callers although we can see them, but also we can't hear alert sounds like ringing etc when logging in and out.
I checked the audio MIDI Setup and it's at 44.
    I've repaired permissions.
Is there any way to uninstall a system update? I really wish I hadn't taken it. I've had iChat since the beginning and never had any problems.
Can anyone make any suggestions to help?

  • Upgrade to 10.9.4 Sound Output Gone

I upgraded to 10.9.4 today.  After doing so the internal speakers output option is not available in the Sound control panel.  My only selections are the Soundflower output choices from my previous install of Soundflower.
Can anyone advise how I could restore normal sound output to the speakers?  Thanks

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    3. If you've installed a software equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and restart.
    4. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    5. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    6. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    7. Reset the NVRAM.
    8. Reset the SMC.
    9. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    10. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • [Solved] No sound after resuming from suspend

After suspending and resuming I no longer have any sound output (through headphone jack or my laptop speaker). The laptop is a toshiba portege r835. I can't say how long this has been happening, since I've only tried to play any sounds after resuming recently.
Searching the forums I found the following thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151001
I haven't tried this because it isn't exactly the same problem, but mostly because I'm currently stuck on kernel 3.5.6 because of the sandy bridge power regression issues.
Does anyone have any other ideas on how to possibly fix this problem?
    Thanks!!

    Solved, sort of.
I had some double suspend issue: I had set up suspend with systemd before using xfce and then after installing xfce I set my power settings so that the computer would suspend after shutting the lid, so I would have to open the lid, shut it, and then open it again for the computer to actually resume. After turning off the suspend setting in the xfce power manager, and just using the systemd suspend, the sound works fine on resume (both headphones and speakers)!

  • Isn't there any sound output on HP w2558hc??

I can't find out how to get any sound OUT (for headset) of my screen...is it just me beeing silly or isn't there plugin  pls help

Your HP W2558hc LCD Monitor DOES have integrated speakers. To get external sound working, you do have to connect
the sound cable from the back of the monitor to the sound output port on the back
of the computer tower. The speaker wire should have a light green colored, male, single pole mini RCA
plug which you would match with a light green colored female sound jack on the back of the tower.
In order to get sound through your headphones, you should locate the jack on the front of the computer
with the headphone symbol beside it and plug the headphone into it.

  • External sound output on Macbook Air stopped working

Two months ago, my Macbook Air went silent.
I tried every trick I was suggested, including upgrading to Mountain Lion OSx , after which sound came back for a few day then disappeared again.
Their is no external speakers listed under <system preferences / sound / output>
Internet is full of this complains, I mean it is not regional and limited to a particular version of hardware/software... complains are coming from everywhere across the world since 2008.
Unfortunately tech support at Apple appears to have no clue as neither hardware change nor software update / upgrade doesn't seem to solve the issue permanently. But they still replace parts and software for some reason, just to drive people crazy later.
I am confident that this issue has already been told to design team , the problem was known for years after all.
What is this? Does Apple expects people to trash their computers when this happens? and get a new one? Is this because Apple asks new customers if they want to recycle their old computers with them?
You probably think I am an Apple hater , I am not. I like their products but I hate their tech support, I am sick and tired of listening to so-called geniuses ,  bunch of untrained high school kids with a lot of BS.
Only hope I have left is, somehow, there maybe someone out there who already solved this problem... Are you there?
    MacBook Air specs :
Processor  2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8
Other Apple products I use together with this Mac :
    Magic mouse
    Apple TV latest
    iPad latest
    iPod touch 4th gen.

    I finally found the solution,
the solution itself actually explains why Apple was so silent about this issue
because every macbook that was sold over the last 5 years was defective ,
it will probably cost Apple $100s of millions to recall them
It is the Audio Board Flex Cable, Part #: 922-8380
    this cable goes bad quickly,
it is defective because this is strickly a design issue
I opened the macbook and replaced it myself,
    all looks fine now
