[SOLVED] No sound with phonon-vlc
I have recently installed Arch Linux and everything's going pretty nice (awesome documentation btw) except for the sound.
I am using the VLC backend for Phonon.
I have two sound cards:
-Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
-Integrated on ATI Radeon HD-4850
I'm using the former. The settings for Phonon detect lists a lot of Audigy2 devices.
When I booted up and logged in, sometimes sound worked, sometimes it didn't.
Everytime I logged in Phonon said an audio device has been removed (lie) and asked me if it can forget it. I once clicked yes. Now there's never any sound.
I have looked at the troubleshooting page in the wiki and there was a solution for the first problem ("Random Lack of Sound on Startup"), I followed the instructions and created /etc/asound.conf and put this in it:
ctl.dmixer {
type hw
card Audigy2
It didn't do much good.
When I run speaker-test, I get this:
speaker-test 1.0.24.2
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
Any help is much appreciated.
EDIT: The problem was not with Phonon. The problem was that ALSA sometimes chose the wrong sound card as default.
Last edited by peterfaj (2011-08-08 07:53:40)I'm having the same problem (after upgrading), but your trick doesn't help. I only have one device anyway:
# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Audigy2 ]: Audigy2 - SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P]
SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P] (rev.4, serial:0x10021102) at 0x9000, irq 19
Also, I do have sound in a TTY console, but applications started in KDE (either in Konsole or graphically) don't have sound. When I start audacious, it says:
ALSA error: snd_mixer_attach failed: No such file or directory.
ALSA error: snd_pcm_open failed: No such file or directory.

Edit: the upgrade of my system I just did included an upgrade from KDE 4.8 to 4.9. Maybe that has something to do with it, because it seems to be Phonon related.

Distorted / choppy recorded sound with Audigy 2 ZS and Vista 64-bit
Hi, I wonder if anybody has any idea of why this issue is happening. First let me give you my PC specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.0 GHz
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 rev. 2.0
Graphics: 2 x BFG GeForce 8800 GT 52MB
RAM: 4 x GB G.Skill PC6400 @ 800 MHz
Sound: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
TV Tuner:? Hauppauge WinTV PVC PCI II (26xxx)
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP
?So here's the deal. I have no problems whatsoever with audio playback with this sound card. The issue I am having is while recording sound with it. When I record my voice via a Microphone with the Windows Sound Recorder and then play it back, my voice sounds very choppy. It sounds as if I was talking in front of a fan. The same happens with any program I try to use. If I use Audacity to record sound, the playback is also distorted / choppy. The main problem is with Skype, as I cannot use it to talk to people because they cannot understand what I'm saying because of the issue. Does anybody has any ideas why this happens? My PC is a dual boot PC with Vista 64-bit and XP 32-bit, and this issue only happens with Vista. Sound recorded plays back fine under Windows XP.
I am using the latest drivers available for this card from the Creative site.
I'd appreciate your help,
DanielStormPetrel wrote:
A little bit off topic here, but 64bit does not mean more performance at all lol.
Sure, but there are in some cases drastic performence diferences. Under a fresh installed Vista X64 i have less CPU usage, as under 32 bit. But of course X64 uses more RAM (some tasks are double 32 and 64 bit). But the main reason I have more performence is, that the games I often play, get almost a boost. Dont ask me why, but under 64 bit EAW and FOC have the same FPS as under 32 bit. But under X64 I use a bit more Details and a higher resolution. (both are 32 bit games, so its a bit funy )?______________________?Sure there are other ways to install the drivers. But if some Setup dosent work, the first thing I try is to get it via Divice Management. And as this worked for me, I dont waste time to try other methods (Had bad experience, you can break the driver faster than install it *G*)?______________________?Some Questions I have left (after a few hours undr X64 with Creative Drivers):?Could it be, that the driver causes sometimes havy CPU usage?Could it also be, that the driver causes some lags, after you copy a file (the end sound, copy is finihed, but takes more time for "final finish", than without the drivers) - I know that Vista has some problems, on some PCs with copy, and that MS has an inoficial Patch (but dosent help for my PC so far) -
[SOLVED]No Sound with ALSA - Intel Corporation 82801G HD Audio
Hey all,
I've succesfully installed Arch Linux. My past two attempts have met with failure, all because of my own failure to read and follow directions correctly. This time everything is installed correctly. I am running Kdemod3 on my laptop with Arch and everything works great. I LOVE Pacman and the simplicity of Arch's configuration files. It's super fast and all together simple. My only remaining problem is this:
My sound with ALSA is not functioning. I followed the installation instructions at the arch wiki and after unmuting all of my channels I still would not get any sound. My sound module is snd_hda_intel and it is detected, loaded and the whole nine yards (as far as I can tell). My user is a member of the 'audio' user group also. I looked at the troubleshooting tips on the bottom of the Wiki but decided not to try them as they do not seem to pertain to my card (snd_hda_intel) but I will try them if anyone would like me to.
If anyone has any ideas, they'd be greatly appreciated!:D Anything I can provide that you need I will be more than willing to provide.
Thanks for such a great distribution,
Dan

I tried the solution in the wiki. The sound would work when I issued the aplay command, but then when I set the .asoundrc file, sound would not work (after logging out and logging back in). I also tried this solution from another thread, but I mistakenly forgot to make backups of the two respective files and now I have no sound at all. Help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Edit:
Also tried this, didn't work either.
Edit2:
Finally got it solved! All I had to do was go into alsamixer and unmute the "S/PDIF" channel, follow the instructions from the wiki (see link above), and I finally got the sound to work.

[SOLVED] No sound (with flash)
Hello.
I have no sound with flash. It does work elsewhere.
I am using ALSA.
My flash should output audio correctly according to wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fl … d_in_Flash
# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC889 Analog [ALC889 Analog]

Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
EDIT: I'm retarded. I didn't add my user to audio group. And sound elsewhere was from speaker-test which needs SU.

Orrrr it's because the flash plugin uses OSS.
run `aoss firefox` and be happy.
OSS does still work or at least the alsa backwards compatibility layer that emulates the old interfaces, right? did i miss anything?
for newer versions of flash (like version 9) simply install firefox in wine and let it install the plugin. that usually works great! -
[SOLVED]Sounds no longer works after kernel update (Audigy 4)
Updated kernel along with other updates. I have an audigy 4 (detected as audigy 2, always been that way).
It's detected if I do lspci, if I go in alsaconf it also detects it and says it should work, but if I then go in alsamixer it just comes up with my USB webcam sound mixer.
What am I doing wrong? I can't get any sound anymore and I don't even know how to start fixing it.
I also checked lsmod and the module was loaded (emu10k1), it should work, but it doesn't.
Any ideas?
Edit: Trying to launch MPD:

Last edited by speng (2009-08-21 02:10:39)Speng, perhaps there are two sound devices on your system?.. What are the contents of /dev/snd/?
Efish, your issue is different, you've got a different card, right? And I don't get what the issue is, exactly. /etc/modprobe.d/*sound.conf? -
Sound problems with audigy platinum after software upgra
After updating software (and then deleteing and redownloading) I had the usual sounds from windows but no sound in other programs. The eax environment was turned to no effects. When I added effects there was then sound. This would be OK in games but is annoying when listening to news broadcasts on AOL.
Any ideas?Well now I'm confused alright. I told you I took out the TV tuner and everything seemed fine. Wrong! The system froze again while playing a DVD movie this time. Naturally I thought about the graphics card which is an Albatron FX 5200 (yes one of those about which NVidia appologised for their technical problems). So I opened the case and took the graphics card out and it was hot! I mean you could fry eggs on it. I checked the system's temperature and I got 58 degrees Celsius for the mainboard. I forgot to mention that I live in Greece and the atmosphere's temperature now is between 29 and 35 degrees celsius. Then I rememberd reading that the new FX series by NVidia are considered very bad graphics cards and besides everything they have cooling problems. So I stuck in my old graphics card (ASUS GEforce Ti 4200) and mounted an additional cooler fan on the case. Now the mainboard's temp doesn't rise over 49-50 degrees Celsius and until this time I haven't had any freezes. My guess is it wasn't the tuner after all. It was a temperature problem and since I'm working with programs that stress the CPU and Audigy to their limits (multiple music sequencing and audio mixing software) I have a good reason to believe that. So the FX 5200 is most likely to have caused it all. Needless to say that besides the extreme temperature the card has crappy performance as well no matter the 128 MB of RAM. I just hope I won't need any more fans to be able to work.

Distorted user sounds with Audigy BETA driv
Not sure where to post this except here - let me know if there's a better place.
I installed the Audigy BETA drivers to use with my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro and Vista Premium 32 using the 4. output with CMSS.
I found that the system sounds worked fine but the wavs that I added myself - "You've got new mail" etc - distorted heavily.
After spending some time on this I found that the "cause" was that Vista's built-in sounds are all recorded in stereo and the wavs that I was using were mono. Editting the samples to create pseudo-stereo (I used Audacity) solved the problem.
I thought that this might be useful info if anyone else has the same problem.I have this same problem with the beta drivers and I am using X-Fi Xtrememusic. All my mono desktop wavs are distorted. Even my Xfire "Click" to let me know a friend has signed on is all static (must be a mono sound as well) What gives Why would Mono files cause this static
Just to add a note: These same files will play fine through the Windows Media player.
Another Note: The Text to Speech feature must be in mono, because this is also distorted. People that leave and enter my vent use the TTS and it is all distorted. Any way to make this stereo Or do we know why mono would be distorted

[SOLVED] No sound with Asus Xonar DGX
I've got no sound so I've looked into journalctl and there were some bluez and pulseaudio related erros. So i.a.w. this topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=155714 I did `systemctl enable bluetooth.service`. No more errors but still no sound.
Other things I did:
- unplug/plug headphones
- check whether anything is muted in alsamixer and the gnome sound applet (note: nothing is greyed-out, microphone picks up signals)
snd_oxygen i.e. ASUS XONAR is the sound card I would like to use and I hook my headphones to.

[SOLVED] No sound in Gnome 3 after upgrade
Hi,
After last upgrade, I have no sound in Gnome 3.
I think all modules are loading:
lsmod| grep snd
snd_hda_codec_conexant 47158 1
snd_hda_intel 25700 4
snd_hda_codec 97432 2 snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep 6300 1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm 74926 3 snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel
snd_page_alloc 7217 2 snd_pcm,snd_hda_intel
snd_timer 18966 2 snd_pcm
snd 60021 13 snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_pcm,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,thinkpad_acpi
soundcore 5442 1 snd
also the soundcard is recognized:
lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf2620000 irq 47
29 [ThinkPadEC ]: ThinkPad EC - ThinkPad Console Audio Control
ThinkPad Console Audio Control at EC reg 0x30, fw 6HHT14WW-1.02
and the user is in aduio group. The problem seems to be similar with this one:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1159367
but as I'm not using LXDE, the solution does not work for me.
Do you have any clues what to do with this?
Thank you!
EDIT: hm, the sound started working, when I launched Gnome Music Player Client... Still, any ideas why this happened?
EDIT2: now it works also after reboot, so it seems like mpd did some mess with the sound. I'm marking this topic as solved, but if someone will know what happened, then I'll be happy just to understand it
Last edited by payek (2012-09-14 03:59:45)Hi, i had exactly the same problem but i managed to solve it by installing pavucontrol via pacman (pacman -S pavucontrol) and setting Analog Stereo Duplex in Configuration Tab. Hope it works for you! ;-)

[solved] no sound with multimedia apps using Pulseaudio Dummy drive
It seems audio issues are kindof frequent atm, but I couldn't solve the strange issue using the informations provided in the threads nor the wiki
Issue:
One app plays audio just fine: Deadbeef Audio player, but no activity shows up in Pavucontrol while playing.
Deadbeef uses default Alsa outpput (currently Pulse audio server)
The other multimedia that I use or tried (mplayer, VLC and paplay test.wav) play files with no sound to be heard. Pavucontrol just shows 'dummy output' activity
as for mplayer that is the case with default pulse and alsa audio drivers
Context:
1/ Recently switched from ALSA to PulseAudio
Have no ~/.asoundrc
2/ First appeared when:
Installed software updates last week. I lazily hoped it will resolve itself with the next update which it didn't so far. None of the packets I updated had linux|pulse|alsa|sound|audio in its name.
Another issue appeared at the same time: no software is able to play any media from the DVD drive. The optical drive itself is well recognized whether by 'lsscsi' or /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
3/ PulseAudio did not start today after booting the system
$ pulseaudio --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: daemon startup failed
Started OK after commenting "/etc/pulse/default.pa" config line that remap microphone to mono for Skype (as per the Pulseaudio wiki)

I guess it might be a rather basic configuration step that I missed and am blind to see. If so, sorry for wasting your time :-/ Hint appreciated.

kozaki wrote:$ systool -vm relevant_snd_module;
Really? What do you think relevant_snd_module is? When you copy something from another thread, maybe it would be wise to read through it first. I tried to explain that there is no relevant_snd_module, it is a hint to the user, yes you, to use the module that is relevant in users case, which often is snd_hda_intel, which again is also mentioned in the other thread. Read it and correct your post accordingly please.
As for the issue at hand, is module-suspend-on-idle loaded? If so, disable and unload it. Start PA with '-vvvv' switch and post the log here. You might want to try defaulting the configuration for PA, meaning delete your ~/.config/pulse. Does your GPU have a hdmi sound card?
Check if you can get sound output with PA killed through speaker-test:
speaker-test -c 8 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD PCH DEV 0}"
speaker-test -c 2 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD PCH DEV 0}"
Both should work launched in that order at the same time. -
CD playback distortion with Audigy 2NX after XP SP2 and Creative upda

<FONT face="Courier New" size=3>Sometime after I installed Service Pack 2, the Audigy stopped functioning completely. I cannot say when, exactly, it "broke," as I have not used it for a while, but I suspect the problem was related to SP2.

What should i do?
