[Solved] Nvidia broke?

My card is NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, Normally the default package 'nvidia' works fine. I updated, and lost support for OpenGL. I figured maybe nvidia dropped updating the geforce fx 5200, so I installed the nvidia-71xx legacy drivers. Well, they simply don't work at all, as soon as X11 loads, I get a complete freaze. What now?

Well guys... I have a brand new nForce 780i mobo with a brand new 8800GT 512MB and I just did the upgrade to the 2.6.26 kernel + the new nvidia driver today and I have the same exact problem pretty much. I am using the Failsafe Terminal frrom GDM as I had previously had GNOME start compiz fusion at startup. When I login to gnome (Failsafe or Regular) it starts loading my applets and about half way through the entire system crashes. I cant even do Ctrl+Alt+F1-4/7 like I normally can to do some kind of recovery. Instead, I hold the powerbutton on my machine for 3 secs and try again. I can't have my system down for much longer, its really important that I fix this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

[Edit]
Just read about rebuild being required for the new kernel from before I posted. Well I really hope they push it out fast and skip testing or something.
I have a computer with a nVidia RIVA TNT2 Model 64 AGP video card and also have had the hang up happen when starting X using the nvidia-71xx package.  What I did was boot up with an Arch Linux install CD to get to a console, so I could remove the "kdm" entry (for you it may be "gdm" or something like that) under DAEMONS in my rc.conf file to get a working computer.  Once I rebooted and logged in at the console, I installed the "xf86-video-nv" package and changed the driver under xorg.conf to "nv" instead of "nvidia".  This should work for everything except 3D accelerated programs for the time being.
I left my nvidia-71xx installed, so that when it has been fixed, it will be a simple fix of changing xorg.conf back to using the "nvidia" driver.
Hope this helps.

First of all, Its nice to be here. I'm a new arch user. So please excuse me if this has been discussed before. I searched the forum , i seem to have this problem https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=156666 but the information in the thread did not solve my issue.

    You didn't have mesa before?!
For a newbie what was the reason to omit this part of the Beginners Guide:
    Install mesa for 3D support:
    # pacman -S mesa
Anyway, glxinfo is inside of a package called mesa-demos (it takes 5 seconds to google it).
Did you removed nouveau as I implied earlier?
Am I getting this right: Arch was working for you since october and something broke in recent days? If so you should have blind idea what could be the reason. Did you changed anything recently? It happened after system upgrade? But first things first: remove nouveau completely  (and maybe reinstall nvidia to see what pacman will say about it). Better yet read some of many threads about it. Most notably this one And for christ sake don't use --force switch or I won't be trying to help you anymore.

thanks,so I'll look deeply into that..I haven't touched anything related though..
    Is (s)mplayer2 raccomended nowadays?
    edit [solved]:
Apparently I had somehow "option DamageEvents" set to false in xorg configuration and that broke vdpau. Classic  pebkac.
    Allan is safe for now

  • [SOLVED] nvidia and xorg-server, slow start compared to nv

I've seen many similar topics but none that have been solved, therefore the new topic.
Starting xorg with nv driver takes just a few seconds to desktop, while using nvidia takes almost 10 seconds more to get to desktop. Although after reaching desktop everything works fine. I've used a minimal xorg.conf for each driver (replacing nvidia with nv):
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    EndSection
    The /var/log/Xorg.0.log when using nvidia:

From what I can tell it is something with the nvidia driver that doesn't play well with xorg.  Perhaps some kind of autodetection that takes long time to finish. Anyone got any ideas how to solve this?

Didn't see they where timestamps . Yes it seems that glx is one cause of the delay. I've tried some different xorg.conf, and it's always ligglx.so or  NV-GLX that slows it down. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up?
ps. The computer is ok. Although the garddrive is a SATA 3.0Gb/s, 5400 RPM.  But I don't think this is the problem?

  • [SOLVED] nvidia-settings startup delay

Does anyone happen to know why nvidia-settings takes a good 3-4 minutes to open after open it from the menu or the terminal, sudo or as user? I'm on xfce and didn't have this problem on Cinnamon or Ubuntu Gnome-Shell.
I have to use this settings panel to turn "on" my secondary display when I plug it up also for some reason, this is new too, but I suppose not relevant to the original question. Bonus points if you know why this is too!

Actually, chalk this up to not looking hard enough again. The suggestion to add
    127.0.0.1 myhostname
to /etc/hosts seems to have solved the issue.

  • [SOLVED] I broke X by pressing a function key

My laptop is a Lenovo y50 4K.  I have Nvidia hybrid optimus graphics with the proprietary Nvidia driver and xrandr modesetting in my .xinitrc.  I have been using my current configuration successfully for a few months.  The issue started when I pressed FN + F3.  This is the function key that toggles my video output source / screen mirroring to the HDMI plug.  I meant to press FN + F2, which is the one that toggles my screen backlight, but my finger missed the key.  I didn't have anything plugged into the HDMI port at the time and X immediately crashed.  I tried to restart X, but it segfaulted.  I tried pressing the function key again, but under TTY all it does is type "p" in console.  I tried restarting the computer, but that changed nothing.  X still crashes.  I tried loading X with a HDMI screen plugged in, no change.  Now I started to think that it was maybe a bios level toggle, so I looked for an option to disable the HDMI plug in my bios settings.  There was none.  I tried rebooting into Windows plugging a device into the HDMI port and cycling through the HDMI screen mirroring options, disabling the HDMI port there and rebooting.  I tried this because I had a wifi issue in the past that turned out to be a bios level toggle from my wifi function key that could only be set from Windows.  At this point, The HDMI output would no longer mirror the screen at bios and Grub, but as soon as the Linux kernel loaded, the screen would mirror over HDMI again.  I don't know if it's relevant or not, but I have used my HDMI port for screen mirroring in the past without problems, but I never used the function key to toggle it before.
This error shows up under dmesg when I try to start X.

It turned out to be exactly this.  Thank you.  It would seem that the function key causing the crash was completely unrelated to my not being able to restart X.  I found the bug report here.
I followed the advice in the comments and got it running by renaming /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so so glamor can't load.  I'll mark the thread as solved.  Hopefully this bug gets addressed quickly because that fix feels like a dirty hack.

  • [SOLVED] nvidia-310.19 and strange characters in eclipse

After system update yesterday (including nvidia-310.19) i got a few strange characters in eclipse source editor window from time to time.
I reverted back to nvidia-304.64 and now problem is gone.
Can someone with nvidia-310.19 check if they also see this problem ?
It may take some time for the strange characters to show up.

Don't know if this helps, but...
The latest nvidia driver broke my system graphically (couldn't modprobe nvidia), so I rolled back nvidia and nvidia-utils.  Then the system loaded xfce OK, but began to display odd chars...some big, some malformed...very goofy.   I just now replaced the driver with the "legacy nvidia" driver (extra/nvidia-304xx) and everything is fine.  The first install attempt failed due to existing files in place, so I deleted them then ran the install again...Looks great now.
UPDATE:  the font corruption came back with a vengeance.  Downgrading xorg-server to the previous version seems to have done the trick....

  • [Solved] Nvidia after kernel update

The nvidia wiki clearly states that: "Every time the kernel26 package is updated, it is a requirement to reinstall the nvidia package and rebooting afterwards. "
But my question is, why? I mean, if the module was to be recompiled, that would make sense. But what does just reinstalling the driver accomplish? In my system, pacman -Ql nvidia shows:
    $ pacman -Ql nvidia
    nvidia /etc/
    nvidia /etc/modprobe.d/
    nvidia /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf
    nvidia /lib/
    nvidia /lib/modules/
    nvidia /lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/
    nvidia /lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/kernel/
    nvidia /lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/kernel/drivers/
    nvidia /lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/
    nvidia /lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
From what I've read, I think the kernel update process copies the compiled modules into the proper folder (inside /lib) named by the kernel version. Should this not be the case with nvidia? If it is not, then is this why the reinstall is needed?
Thanks in advance (and my apologies if I've glossed over something that's patently obvious --- while I've searched for the answer before posting, I am still quite the novice at tinkering with the kernel)
EDIT: just after posting I've realized that maybe this post belongs in "Kernel and Hardware Issues" subforum. But the truth is this isn't really an "issue"... it's more a question from, well, a newbie :-)

Running the risk of asking what might be obvious to some, why?
The driver speaks to the kernel. When the kernel updates, the language used might have changed in various ways. Since nvidia is closed-source, its not always obvious whether what has changed affects it. The same applies to xorg-server, when it updates you should recompile your nvidia driver. Its SOMETIMES not needed, but when it is, would you rather be solving it from the tty?
    quathma wrote:
ngoonee wrote:That's what the wiki is referring to. Even if the kernel major version has not updated (for example 2.6.35.5 to 2.6.35.6 is only a minor version bump) the driver may need to be recompiled. Safer to just do it everytime and restart the machine.
Now I'm confused. Are you saying that the safest approach is to recompile and (re)install the nvidia module after each kernel update? And does this only apply to modules from beta & AUR, or [extra] as well? And shouldn't all this issue of recompiling modules also apply to every other module installed in the system?
Yes that's the safest approach. [extra] is taken care of by the devs, the simple way is to assume they'll bump it if needed (and you don't need to do anything).
The same thing applies to almost any kernel module (AFAIK). It applies to virtualbox's modules, for sure, as well as phc-intel (the only other 2 external modules I use). Most kernel modules are actually compiled in to the kernel26 package anyway, so its not very many. I just automatically recompile the ones I use whenever I notice a kernel/xorg update.

Ok today i noticed that if I delete ~/.nvidia-settings-rc, the UI loads instantly just like it's supposed to.   I started googling around and found that there is indeed a bug in nvidia-settings which has something to do with the way it handles a machine's hostname.
If I edit ~/.nvidia-settings-rc and delete every line that starts with my hostname, the program loads instantly.   When you close nvidia-settings, it will re-write the file, and the next time you start it, you're back to waiting a long time for the UI to load.   It seems there is nothing that can be done to truly fix this until nvidia fixes the bug that is causing it.
Thank you! I had this problem since the latest update.

  • [SOLVED] "alsaconf" broke my sound.

Hi, I've been having problems some strange background noises for a while, so I did a quick search and found this thread, which to my knowledge fixed the problem. So, I rebooted and the noises were still there, then I checked out the ALSA Arch wiki and read the configuration section. Realising what I may have just done I tested my sound only to find I had killed it.
As far as I know it has broken udev and modprobe.conf (which for some reason is empty). I tried to solve the problem myself but I'm feeling  a little lost and a little out of my depth.
    Can anyone please help?

  • [Solved] NVidia 340xx Legacy Troubles - Geforce GTX260 card

What I have done so far:
    - 340xx legacy driver installed
    - Tried downgrading to kernel 3.16.3, and then when that didn't work, back to recent.
When I startx, it seems to attempt to access WM with both monitors, and then falls back to an error:
waiting for X server to shut down (EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
Checking out Xorg.0.log, it expands a little bit on the initial error message:
    NVIDIA(GPU-0): Deleting GPU-0
(EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
And kernel log shows an interesting message:
NVRM precedes every line of the following message
Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console
on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver
requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console
drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in
corruption and stability problems, and is not supported
Let me know if any more clarification is needed.

  • [Solved] Update broke some things

Okay, I just ran pacman -Syu and among the kernel and ndiswrapper updates some important stuff got broken.
    1.   When I try to boot up it gets to the file systems spits out a bunch of stuff and gives me this error
    /etc/rc.sysinit line 271 5915 segmentation fault /bin/mount -o remount, rw
What do i have to do to that line to let it boot normally?
    2.   This isnt a fatal error, just an annoyance.  but in that same file on line 350 it says: /usr/bin/kbd_mod no such file or directory.
    Can I delete this line?
    3.  and finally once again, these updates broke the wireless.  When I run netcfg2 mynetwork I get a wireless association failed error.
    Any help on this?

  • [SOLVED] Update broke font anti-aliasing

I've been updating daily, and there were just a few updates today (Sunday, 22 January).  However, almost immediately my fonts went ugly.  I tried rebooting, but it didn't help.  Anti-aliasing doesn't work anymore in Xfce or KDE, which is all I tried.
I did notice there was a udev update, but there were also some library updates that I can't remember.  I have no idea what broke.
Any insights or suggestions?  The system is ugly enough that it's hard to read, so I'm moving over to an Arch I haven't updated today.

Solved.  For some reason I suddenly needed to add a hand-rolled ~/.fonts.conf -- one might have hoped that the Xfce settings would actually work for the Xfce panel and menus, but I guess not.

  • [solved] NVIDIA 346.35-3 breaks TTY console displays.

I have a GeForce 970, I am using GRUB with GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep, and my kernel is booting into 1920x1200 mode. Since upgrading to NVIDIA 346.35-3 my TTY consoles all become garbled and unreadable once X has started, but they are unaffected before X starts.
Downgrading to NVIDIA 343.36-6 solves this issue. There isn't any output in the journal. When I switch to a TTY, my monitor reports that it's in 640x480 mode.
    Example:
    Anyone else having these problems?

    Hi,
I also confirm the behavior with 2x GTX 970 SLI + Base Mosaic Mode and Nvidia 346.35-6.
Hope this get fixed soon. Or we find a workaround for that issue.
