[SOLVED] Odd window manager problem...

I have installed Arch and a full Gnome DE. However when I start gnome, I get an odd window manager. I tried metacity and metacity --replace in a terminal, but I just get "Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager"
Here is what it looks like:
Any way I can get some metacity going?
Edit: [SOLVED]
I just put metacity as startup application and restarted. Still not sure what that window manager was, but I'll be okay I guess...

sand_man wrote:
haha you had gnome running with twm as the window manager instead of metacity.
You need to put 'exec gnome-session' in your .xinitrc file.
twm huh? Well that's a new one for me!
I tried to do that but the .xinitrc file didn't exist yet and I wasn't sure if I should make it...I think I tried ~/.xinitrc . Would it be in another directory?

  • Tutorial for solving some media manager problems

    Hey gang,
    Hopefully me posting this isn't bad forum etiquette, but I recently published a tutorial that details some fixes and "best practices" for properly importing media and getting rid of some pesky media manager errors:
    http://library.creativecow.net/lyon_matt/fixing-fcp-assets/1
    Full disclosure: I get something like a $0.01 per page view, but I'm not expecting to get rich. I just wanted to spread the word because I know lots of people experience Media Manager problems.
    Feedback is definitely welcome!

  • Does Running Boot Camp Solve Mavericks' Windows-Networking Problems?

    Anyone running Mavericks in a Windows-server environment knows how agonizingly slow it is populating a window on the server if there are more than a few dozen files in it (we have 25-30 folders on our Windows server that have more than 10,000 files in each one, and they are all images files with sizes between 5 and 50 MBs each). When we open a folder that's on the server in Mavericks' Finder, it can take up to 30 minutes to populate that window. We have since reverted to Mountain Lion and although it's still slow to populate those windows, it's nowhere near as slow as Mavericks, and once the window populates, as long as we don't shut down the computer, the next time we open that window it populates within seconds (I'm guessing that some sort of cache file is created).
    Does anyone know if running Windows in Boot Camp (or Parallels) would speed up the Windows-server window population problem? I'm guessing it might but I'm not sure if the computer is still connecting to the server using the Mac networking protocol. If I use my Windows 7 PC the server windows populate almost instantly.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] Xterm window title problem

    HI!
    I finally decided to install Arch with openbox, because I have some free time for it and it looks really nice for me. At the beginning every problem could be solved, but now I think I need your help.
    To have nice-looking transparent terminals on my desktop, started at boot, I installed DevilsPie and Xcompmgr. I started to write some fancy devilspie code in ~/.devilspie/xterm.dc:
    (if
    (is (window_name) "MyTerminal")
    (begin
    (spawn_sync (str "transset-df -i " (window_xid) " 0.7") )
    In ~/.xinitrc and ~/.config/openbox/autostart I put commands starting devilspie and xterm:
    devilspie -c &
    xterm -T "MyTerminal" &
    But instead of having name "MyTerminal" console still have name "severus@severus:~", according to current location. Nothing can force xterm to have different name. And here is my problem: how can i recognize my window in devilspie script, when it has different name than it should? How can I override the window title of xterm? I guess that automatic update of terminal title can be disabled, but where? I was looking, for now without effect.
    Last edited by severus (2013-06-26 20:57:23)

    Sure, i though you should match against the WM_CLASS in your DevilsPie config script and not against the WM_NAME.
    The window title will be set by the global bashrc int /etc/bash.bashrc.
    Look at http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/Xterm-Title.html to see the escape sequences etc.

  • [SOLVED] Awesome Windows Manager terminal not opening

    Hello,
    I recently reinstalled Arch on my UEFI laptop. It went pretty smoothly, apart from the fact that whenever I start up arch it says that it failed to activate my swap partition. But that's not the problem I'm posting about. I installed Xorg, and then AWM, and adding "exec awesome" to ~/.xinitrc, and Awesome starts up nicely when I run startx. However, when awesome starts up, I can't open a terminal window. I've taken to just exiting Awesome whenever I want to run a command, which is a real pain in the arse when I just installed and I'm still pacmanning like crazy for all the packages I need.
    Do you guys know what's wrong? I can right click, but when I click "open terminal", or "manual" or "edit config", nothing happens. No windows pops up under any of the tags, no application appears on the toolbar at the top. "restart" and "quit" work, so it's nothing to do with the actual right click menu / menu that pops up when you click the button in the top left.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. I looked online, it doesn't seem like anyone else has this problem...

    Also, don't forget you can swap to a virtual terminal via Ctrl-Alt-F2, for instance. And Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get back (well, to be pedantic, Alt-F1 works from the terminal, but I prefer to just use the one that always works)

  • Odd Window Minimizing Problem

    I'm having a very strange issue, and I have never even seen anything remotly close to this..and for some reason this just started happening today.
    Problem:
    OSX is not allowing me to have two application windows open on the screen at the same time. If Mac Mail is open on the left of my screen and, I select safari from my dock OSX will auto minimize My Mac Mail Window and open the Safari Window.
    This goes for all applications.. (Calendar & Mac Finder), (System Preferences & Reminders) etc..
    It will not allow me to have applications focused on one desktop screen.
    Tech Info:
    Mountain Lion 10.8.2
    Macbook Pro Retina 2.6Ghz 16GB Ram
    No External Displays Attached

    Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
    (Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
    If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.

  • Odd window redraw problem...

    This just starting happening so I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.
    In Dreamweaver CS5, I normally work on a few pages at a time, all in tabs and I use split screen to see the code and design. Now, if I'm on one tab and then click on another tab to switch to that page, it does switch, but the window goes grey until I click a second time on the tab, then the window refreshes and I can see the content.
    I'm attaching an image of what it looks like when I say the screen is grey:
    Then on the second click, my window redraws to this (I had to blur the content):
    I can't seem to find a setting that would have done this and the only change I've made to the system is clear the font cache, but I can't imagine how that would affect it.
    Any help would be great.

  • [SOLVED!] KDE 4.11 - Window Manager seems not to be running?

    Greetings,
    I still seem unable to fix the fact that systemsettings will run. However it will run if you do kdesu systemsettings.
    Doing so I started checking around in it and thought I'd look at the desktop effects, when I was greeted with this:
    So, I am guessing that the window borders and buttons are a figment of my imagination....
    This is after me pretty much starting over with KDE, removing the .kde and .kde4 folders.
    Help?
    Edit: That pic seems to not link right. Yay. Basically it says that effects can not be activated or whatever because a window manager seems not to be running. The irony of it is you can see the fact that there are window borders and buttons and such, evidence of a WM...
    I wonder if there is something here that is related to me not being able to run systemsettings... yet systemsettings will run fine in any other environment - including Gnome Shell.
    Another thing, KDE 4.11 ran great in testing and kde_unstable. Once it went to extra, things happened. I find that odd. Maybe something is missing on my end that most archers already have?
    Edit2: fixed image link

    No omeringen, Nvidia user.
    I can try again Thaodan since I've had some updates come through (and weeded out some dot files). Last time I tried I saw OpenGL 2 selected. Trying to change to 3 or anything else also got the screenshot in my OP.
    I'll log into KDE and see if it still does the same, after a brief check for last minute updates.
    EDIT: OK, so I can mark this as solved. I found an odd dot file, who's name excapes me but deals with kde sessions, just sitting around in the home folder. Once I deleted it and restarted, I found that not only System Settings finally ran again as a user, but I could also change and apply desktop effects. Peculiar. I thought that maybe it was a dot file that was causing the problem, that wasn't in the .kde or .kde4 folder. It just took finding it and removing it.
    I wish I knew more to tell, but this at least solves my issue, and the issue with the non-running-as-user system settings I had posted in another thread (thinking that they were separate events. Thanks again for all your help guys!

  • [solved] OpenGL apps in window do not obey window manager

    Hello,
    I have another X related problem, the first one resulted in downgrading my X
    (see http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=44460 )
    Now I am finally able to run both xv (video rendering) and dri (3d rendering), but
    I have a problem, that when I run an opengl app in window (for example glxgears, but also game emulators and games in Wine), it does not move or resize when the window manager tells it to, e.g. when I move or resize the window. This makes 3D in window nearly unusable.
    In my previous linux (suse) this worked normally; DRI was on and I was able to resize or move the 3D apps windows

  • WINDOWS INSTALLER PROBLEM WITH DESKTOP MANAGER

    Please help!! I am a user of the Blackberry Desk Top Manager, running under Windows XP Service Pack 4.5. I recently downloaded the latest version of Desk Top Manager and I am getting the following error: - Flashing intermittently, whilst running the newly downloaded Desktop Manager - "Windows Installer Preparing to Install". I have removed the programme, downloaded it again from Blackberry's website and run my Windows updates to no available. I have now been advised that I must format my entire computer and reload Windows, which seems to be a rather onerous solution, as I have been using Blackberry's Synchronisation Programme for over a year successfully before this took place. I should appreciate it if you would let me know how this problem on my IBM Think Pad Laptop can be cured.

    Hi all..
    I am having the same problem with desktop software 6, but my problem is more like this..
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB19300
    The Windows Installer pop-up during installation and cannot continue, it seems that windows installer 4.5 is the cause, but I cannot uninstall windows installer 4.5 because many of my programs were using this..
    In this knowledge base solution it says to run BlackBerry Desktop Software.msi, but on BlackBerry Desktop Software 6, it need to run from setup.exe and cannot continue.. so I cannot install desktop software 6 on my computer, but I am able to install older version desktop software ie. version 4.2 to version 5.
    I think that I am gonna reply here instead of making new thread about windows installer 4.5 and Desktop Software 6, please move if I did wrong.
    PS. Bifocals..
    The link you provided is missing. Or it just back to BlackBerry Technical Solution Center page and I tried searching the KB13781 with no success.
    Please if there is other link that may be good for my problem.
    Thank you very much.
    Hi ihalimsujanto and welcome to the forums!
    My first concern is that you do have a version of desktop manager that you can maintain your device and PIM data with, do you?
    Please post back with as much detail as possible regarding your hardware and software setup.
    Also post what steps you have taken to resolve the issue. The more detail we have the better we can help you. I'll reread KB 19300 and find what happened to my broken link.
    Thanks.

  • [Solved] systemd/user : how to exit window manager & stop X?

    Solution: Jump to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1262166
    I have set up my system to user systemd units to start my environment (roughly following the wiki).
    My problem is that I cannot exit my window manager (using “io (exitWith ExitSuccess)” in Xmonad): the service file starting the WM (xmonad) stops/exits with success, but the xorg.service keeps
    running. I need to switch to TTY2, systemctl --user stop xorg.service by hand, then switch to TTY1, execute Ctrl-C, and then I finally get my login
    prompt back.
    This is a bit annoying, and I don't know how to fix it.
    Here are the relevant (I think) unit files:
    # xmonad.target
    [Unit]
    Description=XMonad
    Wants=xorg.target
    Wants=xinit.target
    Requires=dbus.socket
    AllowIsolate=true
    [Install]
    Alias=default.target
    # xmonad.service
    [Unit]
    Description=Starts Xmonad
    Before=xinitrc.target
    After=xorg.target
    Requires=xorg.target
    [Service]
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/xmonad
    Environment=DISPLAY=:0
    Restart=no
    [Install]
    WantedBy=xmonad.target
    RequiredBy=xorg.service
    As you can see, I have added the RequiredBy=xorg.service line at the bottom, hoping that if xmonad.service exits, so should xorg.service - but to
    no avail.
    What do I have to do in order to completely stop X and get my login prompt on TTY1 back?
    EDIT: I am of course using the user-session-units.

    I know it's an old thread (not really old) but I have the same problem. The question is your solution doesnt work with me. It just give me an error like this:
    Failed to issue method call: The name org.freedesktop.login1 was not provided by any .service files
    Failed to issue method call: Process /bin/false exited with status 1

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3.8 annoying window resize problem

    Hello all fellow early-adopters :-)
    A very annoying quirk I've noticed, moving from GNOME 3.6 to 3.8, is that it no longer remembers, nor retains, the size/positions I set for many of my application windows. For example, my mail client (Evolution) is sized to fill most of my screen (centrally), with Empathy and Skype as long narrow windows on both sides - giving me a nice, broad "communications" overview on that particular desktop (with dev tools etc open on others).
    On 3.6, this layout was retained during my session, as well as next time I started these apps up.
    In GNOME 3.8, not only does it insist that these windows are always started as small little bunched-up windows that I need to resize, but every time a window displays a notification/warning (message in internal yellow bar inside the window - such as loss of internet connection, mail retrieval failure etc) it resizes the windows spontaneously to a stupid, small size that overlays the other windows. This is driving me crazy!
    Where can I learn a bit more about how window sizing / positioning works in GNOME 3.8, or is it finally time to switch to awesome wm? I want to love GNOME 3.8, I really do. It's so slick, but so... unpolished.
    I want to dig in an assist with problems like these, but I need some pointers to some background material first to understand the problem. Is it the window manager? Is it the app?
    ** UPDATE: Doing a full system upgrade, as of May 18, 2013, has resolved this annoying problem. My windows now stay where they belong, and start with the same size they were closed with. GNOME is now pleasant to use again :-)

    I really like GNOME 3.x though (and would like to understand the windowing behaviour), but if the annoying quirks are insurmountable, I will happily switch.
    Man I love GNOME 3.x. I admire the courage they had to change, basically, everything, and I find myself more productive with my GNOME 3 Arch box than with my good ol' Slackware KDE 4 box. I just hate those bugs - for example I filed a task in their bugtracker for this window resize problem I have with gedit. If it's a love/hate relationship, I think it's marriage ^_^
    With the 3.8 upgrade, deadbeef was having a similar problem with window size/position. I just recompiled it against the latest GTK+3 package upgrade (that came after the 'big upgrade' here on Arch) and it was fixed. But not with gedit
    bwat47 wrote:
    Man I really hope this gets fixed soon, because aside from this one incredibly annoying issue I am loving gnome 3.8.
    I get the feeling gnome badly needs more beta testers, sizable regressions like this in "stable" releases happen way too often sad.
    I get the exact same feeling. Well bugs exist everywhere, there's no denying. But I think it would be wiser to 'alternate' the nature of each major stable release - one focusing on new features and one focusing on fixing bugs. For example if the only new features in GNOME 3.10 were the AppsFolder full implementation and the introduction of gnome-calendar, and the rest of the development cicle being devoted to fix bugs, I'd be more than happy.
    Like Fedora and Ubuntu, the fixed 6-month release cycle colaborates with the bugs. They don't do like Debian or Slackware which are released 'when they are ready'.
    EDIT: fout (yet) another bug. At least with facebook chat (haven't tested with other telepathy plugins) the buddy tray icon appear duplicate. Anybody with the same issue?

  • CDE Window Manager  configuration problem (Sol 8)

    Hi
    I have a strange problem with CDE. After having a proper PC instalation done, as I log in the CDE I get black background and only 2 windows ( a kind of help window and the File Manager) The windows don't have title bars, cannot be moved ot whatever. Now, I seems to me that the window manager failed to start. Since I'm new to Solaris, can anybody give me a hint where I can find the configuration scripts and error logs.
    Thanks
    Val

    if it were me I'd check /var/dt/Xerrors (Xservers log file)
    $HOME/.dt/errorlog & startlogs for clues ... this is where CDE would log
    problems.
    However you mentioned PC so I'll assume you are using ReflectionsX,
    Exceed
    or similar, all come with a log file and trace utility via the Xconfig
    screen
    which maybe worth your while looking into ?
    As to the window manager failing to start .... the process is called
    dtlogin
    and on the Solaris server you should see one parent process + 1 child per
    remote display if things are working correctly.
    Gotcha's : most likely problems are caused by either Fonts - check PC
    Xemulation log files or hostname resolution problems.

  • [Solved]Cannot execute i3 window manager

    I installed i3 tiling window manager along with kde(kde could be executed),and follow the step written in i3's wiki:
    Edit ~/.xinitrc and add:
    exec i3
    exec i3 -V >>~/.i3/i3log >&1
    and cp /etc/i3/config ~/.i3/config,after these steps I still cannot execute i3 wm, could anyone tell me what I missed?
    appreciate your reply.

    You should add just one of the above exec statements by the way, and it should be on the last line in ~/.xinitrc. The second line is preferred if you want to log messages from i3 while it's running. To start a window manager manually from a console use
    xinit /full/path/to/i3
    Thank you,it seems worked.

  • [SOLVED] Mouse-friendly dwm window manager?

    Dear all,
    I use the dwm window manager (version 6.0). I think I remember that some time ago in the suckless website
    there was some part where they presented some configuration for extended mouse support. Not sure if I
    recall correctly but, in any case, I can't find something like this any more.
    Does anybody have any hints on that? Any links or advice regarding extended mouse support for dwm?
    Thanks in advance..

    What exactly is it you think is 'extended'? DWM supports the mouse as much as any other tiler, ie you can move windows with the mouse. There's also the tilemovemouse patch/extension that I think (never used it myself) lets you move tiled windows with the mouse. Find it here:
    https://github.com/ok100/dwm/blob/maste … ovemouse.c
    wolfcore wrote:Well for starters you can customize the button definitions in config.h...
    Thanks! The tilemovemouse patch will definitely help.. And I realize I wasn't clear enough
    when I was saying 'extended'.
    I eventually found many of the things that I was looking for here:
    http://dwm.suckless.org/customisation/customfuncs
    and that helped me understand better how the config.h works..
    I think some customization along with the tilemovemouse patch
    would be pretty complete for me..
