[Solved] Old Thinkpad Laptop with HPA LCD + SM712

I have some problem configuring X on an old laptop (IBM Thinkpad 1161-237 i series 1200 with an HPA LCD 12.1" 800x600 max resolution) ... I tried everything.
I can start X, but I have a mess on the screen ... you can see the windows, but there are lines and pixel with randon colours everywhere. In other words a mess.
I have a backtrack live cd, so I tried to see if the same problem come up with it: absolutely not, everything was fine. So, I checked up how backtrack configured X ... and I saw that it generated a xorg.conf file on the fly .... well, here we go I said. I copied that file on a usb stick and I putted it in the /etc/X11/ directory of arch .... startx ... and ..... same mess.
The video driver is siliconmotion ... and everything is up to date.
                             Thanks in advance
PS: Obviosly I tried to use the various configurator ... the results was X up with black scree during the configuration but the file was generated ... using this one, same mess I told you above.
Last thing. I also use hal (it starts from rc.conf at start up).

Still no ideas?
How could it be that the autogenerate backtrack's xorg.conf doesn't work correctly in arch?
It's the exactly same machine, same configuration ..... I'm absolutely confused.
It doesn't make sense to me.
It starts X on arch with that xorg.conf, but the screen is completely messy ...
meanwhile I've tried also hwd and other tools .... there is no way ... :-(

  • I recently brought a new HP laptop and I downloaded the newly updated iTunes on it; however I have an old Aver laptop with iTunes version 10.7 on it or the one before iTunes 11 came out. How can I transfer my movies from the old version to the new one?

I recently brought a new HP laptop and downloaded iTunes 11 on it. My old laptop which is a Acer has iTunes version 10.7, I believe. I wanted to know, How can I transfer 18 movies from the old iTunes onto my new Itunes? It only shows the most recent two movies when I look at the purchases in my account. I had a lot of moves downloaded last year from the old version and would like some assistance on how to get all those movies into my iTunes 11 library. Thank you.

you should starting with copying the iTunes folder from your old laptop to the new one.
the iTunes folder is in your user profile Music folder.
it should go to the same location on the new laptop.
Provided that you have your media, music and movies in the default location, and you sign in to your apple ID and authorize your new computer (all in iTunes)
    you should have all intact.
    Post if any problems.

  • HP laptop with 52" LCD TV

I have this 52" lcd tv and am toying with the thought of using it as a monitor
with my laptop. Has anyone tried this setup, and if you did, does it funtion well.

i think you can use HDMI port to connect your LCD TV.
then you can either use it as a clone to the first screen or extend your desktop.

  • I have an ipad, and want into replace my laptop with it. Is there a way of running iTunes from my ipad to allow me to put music onto my old ipad classic without the need for a computer.

Please help me on this issue. I have the latest full size ipad with retina display and want to replace my old hp laptop with it. I currently run an iPod classic and nano from the iTunes on it, but i want to run them off my ipad. Is this possible.

The iPad is not a computer, it cannot replace one, and it cannot sync music or media to other devices.
You need to keep a computer around if you want  to sync ther Classic and Nano. It may also be useful if you ever need to backup the iPad in case a restore is necessarry.

  • Old Toshiba Satellite with broken CD-Rom now needs a new hard drive to reinstall OS and drivers

I have a very old Toshiba laptop with an unworking Cd/DVD drive. Recently the internal HDD crashed and is unrepairable due to a broken hardware issue. I purchased a new Internal HDD and installed it then attempted to reinstall from the recovery disk using an external DVD drive. This did not work as the computer forces me to utilize the onboard CD/DVD drive. Besides the original HDD crashing after 5 years of use this is still a pretty good laptop which is why I would like to find a way to fix it. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it very much.
As an aside I do have a SATA USB cord and if it is possible I might be able to utilize it and the disk to install/recover the new drive and then install it this way however I don't know if this will work. Thanks.

The new Toshiba laptops will allow you to run the Recovery from the USB ports, with either a flash drive or an external DVD drive. Unfortunately, the old Toshibas don't have that option. Your best choice is to replace the broken DVD/CD drive. After that you should be able to run the Recovery and start again.

Operating Problem with CS5.1 extended. I replaced my old HP Laptop with a new Lenovo laptop with Win 8.1 and reinstalled CS5.1 64-bit version. The software downloaded and installed correctly and worked for a day, but when I rebooted the next day, the Image Adjustments and tools functions did not respond any more. I have uninstalled and redownloaded/ reinstalled without success.

  • How to solve a serious problem with the Battary of my T500 laptop ?

    Hi Forum,
My personal laptop is Lenovo THINKPAD T500 2055, and its main specifications are as follows:
    - 39T6651 SBB 9 CELL LI-ION BATTERY
    - Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)
    - 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module 4 GB (2 x 4 GB) 1066MHz DDR31066/PC38500 DDR3 SDRAM SoDIMM Kingston.
    - 2 GB Intel Turbo Memory hard drive cache.
    - ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 with 256MB.
    - 160 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm.
    - Windows 7 Ultimate with the latest Service Pack (x64).
My problem precisely and concisely is the Battary. I have been using my laptop with the same battary since 01.01.2009 (Almost 3.5 Years), and the battary has been working quite OK.
Most of the time my laptop is plugged in and working with the electricity. However, A very few times I used the laptop while it is running on battery, Nevertheless, I have the habit to empty the batter once in a while i.e. Every 3 weeks, I unplug the charger and keep using the laptop till I see the warning orange sign (5%), then, I plug it in again.
Thankfully, I never had any problems with the battary nor the laptop, and when I charge the laptop usually it shows full sign (100%).
Three days ago, All of a sudden my laptop starts flashing the orange battary sign constantly while charge indicates 100%. When I try running on the battery by unplugging the AC adapter, the laptop loses power immediately and shuts down right away.
What do you think should I do? Could you please provide me any useful tips to resolve this problem?
I would greatly and sincerely appreciate all your inputs !
Thanks for your consideration of my request, and I very much look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience !
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

In the control panel goto the "Lenovo - Power Manager" and click the battery tab, there is a maintenance button in there that will let you change the charging profile for your battery.   (from memory, so exact wording may be off)
The lower the numbers you use there, the longer the battery *should* last.    These batteries degrade faster at higher charge levels, however storing them at too low of levels is also not good for them... I've read that 40% is optimal, but just not realistic if you use your computer.

    @trilby
i use my Laptop at home 95% and at work 5%
so my first choice would be to have the perfect resolution on my NEC external and when i opened a window it would display there and i dont have to open my Laptop to move the screen to see it on my external or is it so that you must have opened the laptop display to move the windows?
And when i would take it at work it would be perfect if i see it on the laptop with his resolution 1600x900
i hope i explained it well.
    @anoknusa
i change your config to this
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x900 --rotate normal --output DP2 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
when i start firefox it was displayes well on my external but when i opened xterm or thunar pcman i have to open my laptop and move from it up to the external do i make a mistake?
anoknusa wrote:I stuck that in a script to run when I start X; if the external monitor isn't plugged in, only the laptop display is used.  This sets each screen to act as a seperate display; I can still drag windows between them if I wish, as well as assign windows to open on one screen or the other through DWM's configuration file.  As mentioned earlier, this is also the only way (I think) to get each screen to display at its native resolution.  Note that I specify the resolution for both my T520 LCD and my external monitor, and specify their positions (my external is mounted to the wall above my desk, directly above my laptop); change those as necessary.
what has xrandr to look like for my external monitor and laptop?
and what would the script look like for me?
    external 1920x1200
    T420 1600x900
and thank you for your patience and have a nice day
ps: i know iam very close to find a solution for my problem

  • DVI/HDMI connection for Thinkpad R61 (with IBM 2504 Docking station) and Samsung LNT4665F LCD TV

I am trying to connect my laptop (Thinkpad R61) with my TV (Samsung LNT4665F) using a DVI/HDMI cable. Because the R61 doesn't have a DVI port, I am using it in the IBM 2504 Docking station. I have docked the computer, connected the DVI/HDMI cord (using HDMI in 1 on the TV, which I believe is the only DVI accepted HDMI on the TV). I followed the Samsung instructions to then hit "Fn-F7" on the laptop. Unfortunately, nothing is happening. It doesn't appear that any signal is pushing out to the TV.
I am not very tech savvy. Can someone please tell me what I need to do?
    Thanks for your help.

if your R61 uses an intel GPU, then it won't support the dvi passthrough port on the dock.
The 14" models with intel GMA have DVI pass through.
@ bweisy, welcome to the forum,
Which model R61 do you have? Could post the Type and Model Number Please do NOT post your s/n.

  • How to use a second laptop with my old router

Hello,  I'm trying to use a second laptop with my old router (model BEFW11S4 v.2) for a work project.  I've tried two diff computers and neither will connect, each giving different error messages. The work laptop I have right now will hook up to an unsecured network and will ask me for a network key for other detected secured networks, but tells me to refresh and search for networks again when I try to hook up to my network.   My personal laptop hooks up to the internet just fine.  Help!  Mo

  • XFree86 in Laptop with external monitor (Solved)

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100, and my problem is that it's lcd display backlight bulb is not working.
Is it possible to configure xFree86 to work in my laptop with an external monitor? I have tried
to configure it but failed in getting it working. All I could get is an image full of mad green, white
and black pixels. My external monitor is an AOC CT720g 17" CRT monitor.
Sorry for my late response I was enjoying my vacations.
I install xorg and xfce, it runs smoothly. The problem was
    XFree86.
Thanks in advance for your help,
                                                Nautivus

Well you're right it works with the "FN + F8" switch in Windows.
So now I know it is a hardware switch. I will try configuring it as
my only monitor and with XORG. My video card is an NVIDIA GeForce2 GO.
How I can configure it so I can use the hardware switch to alternate
    from one monitor to another?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nautivus

  • [Solved] Communicating with nearby laptop with just wireless cards

Is there a way to communicate (e.g. exchange files) between a laptop with a wireless card and a nearby laptop that also has a wireless card, when there is no router nearby? Can two laptops with wireless cards communicate with each other without needing another device?

Please mark the thread as [solved] by editing your title. Our wiki is awesome, as you've already found (more awesome than asking questions on the forums at least ).
