[SOLVED] Openbox/tint2 (or trayer) -- nothing in system tray

Hi,
Just decided to try Openbox and see what all the fuss was about. I really like it and am fairly confident I'll be ditching Xfce quite soon. I've had some oddities come up, though...
- tint2 (and trayer, for that matter) show nothing at all (no icons, no nothing) in the system tray. I've started tint2 with this (stolen from elsewhere) just to try the tray:
# SYSTRAYBAR
systray_padding = 0 0 0
systray_background_id = 0
and trayer with this:
trayer --expand true --widthtype request --edge top --align right --SetDockType false
and nothing shows up. Is there some set of icons or package or communication that needs to be going on that isn't happening?
Thanks for any suggestions. It's mostly usable, but it'd be nice to get these issues resolved.
- Now solved (see update below): I really like the Still Dark II theme by Tawan but when I C-A-Left/Right to change desktops, none of the rectangle desktop icons in the pop-up pager thingy change colors. I just see four black rectangles with blue borders the color of the theme blue, but they don't show one solid one to indicate where you are. With other themes, this hasn't been a problem and I get one solid rectangle to indicate my current desktop position. For what it's worth, the same thing happens with xfzen-blue, too. What's might be the issue?
---( Update )---
Tawan responded to an earlier message I sent and helped sort everything out. For those interested, if you have no solid color when switching desktops, find the ../theme-name/openbox-3/themerc and correct/add these lines:
osd.hilight.bg: flat solid
osd.hilight.bg.color: #1994d1
This was exactly what I needed. Just replace the html hex color with what you want.
---( End Update )---

Wow -- I shouldn't be allowed near a computer. Apparently you actually have to start something that shows up in the panel for... something to show up in the panel. I'm used to xfce where a battery monitor and wicd-client were always running from startup. Starting vlc was what did it for me. Seeing that darn cone show up was what made me commence slapping myself.

  • Kopete + openbox + tint2, system tray icon won't spin problem.

    Hello there guys.
    I'm having a problem with kopete's icon in system tray. When I recieve incoming message the icon should spin around (works in kde) but in openbox+tint2 won't and I have no idea why not. This wouldn't be a problem if I'd use any other kind of notification than Mark taskbar entry, but I don't. Is there any specific setting in tint2 to allow icons move?

    What system notification program are you using? If you don't have one, that could be the issue because the system tray is just a trayer replacement, not a notification window. Either xfce4-notifyd or something. If you really want the dependencies you can get kdeplasma-addons-applets-incomingmsg.
    xfce4-notifyd is much less resource-hungry

  • [SOLVED] openbox margins with dual monitors

    Hi community,
    I have stumbled to a nasty problem on my first incursion to dual monitors in openbox.
    I'm using xrandr with this command (which works just fine BTW):
    xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800 --primary --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024_60.00 --gamma 1.0:1.4:0.85 --right-of LVDS
    and have set a Virtual screen in xorg.conf of 2560 x 1024 pixels.
    But, my laptop monitor only handles 1280x800, while my external LCD monitor has 1280x1024, so there is a virtual area under my laptop screen which i'm not using, but i dont really care about that.
    The problem is that when I'm setting screen margins, so that maximized windows will respect the panels in the bottom (tint2), in rc.xml (or by obconf) the margins are applied to the virtual screen and only are practical on the external monitor wich has more pixel height.
    I'm really missing some kind of per monitor margin settings in openbox, maybe there is and i haven't found it? It makes me wonder because openbox can maximize windows to a single monitor, even if the whole layout it's treated like a virtual screen, so it has some way of distinguishing between them.
    I would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

    TL;DR - I'm not aware of any acceptable solution at the moment.
    Basically, what you're having problems with, is the "dead area." It can really be quite a pain in the butt if window managers or other screen aware applications don't anticipate it properly. To my knowledge, Openbox doesn't support margins on a monitor-by-monitor basis. In reality, you shouldn't need to be setting margins anyway. Tint2 should be reporting itself as a taskbar, and Openbox should be respecting that.
    I have dead area too, with multiple monitors, and Openbox respects both of the KDE taskbars I have running (one on each monitor). (I use KDE and simply replaced Kwin with Openbox.) This tells me that tint2 should be able to cooperate with Openbox. I remember trying tint2 a while ago, and didn't fine it adequate in a dual monitor environment (it was probably a year ago or so). tint2 would need to be setting the _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL hint, and I'm not sure if it is (or if it's doing it properly). See http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spe … #id2507618
    Also, I do know that the developer for Openbox recently got a dual monitor setup, and she's been adding additional support for dual monitors a little at a time. Hopefully with 3.5, there will be a lot more support. (Margin support for multiple monitors would be great, because it could be a good utility knife for applications that don't care about multi-monitors setups and don't set the proper hints.)
    If you're capable of modifying tint2, my course of action would be to try something that works (like the KDE taskbars) and record the hints being set there. Then compare them with tint2 and try to mirror KDE's setup. (If you're a programming lacking experience with X and related nonsense, I'd be more than willing to offer what guidance I have.)
    Also, I developed a panel myself (and got pretty far along) using the PyGTK toolkit... But I can't remember if I solved this problem or not. I'll try to check it out and get back to you. (I got as far as implementing a widget system that includes a task list, system tray, clock, menus... It just isn't polished very well. My original intention was for it to be a more robust PyPanel with dual monitor support.)

  • [SOLVED] Putting mouse cursor on system tray = freeze for 1~3 sec

    Hello guys, I got 2 problems with setting up my graphical package or something.
    1. I've installed "Arch 64bit + Openbox Stand alone + Catalyst" on my desktop.
    When I put my mouse cursor on the system tray, whole system freezes for  1~3 seconds.
    2. When I open "Thunar", randomly icons and fonts are blurry. Sometimes it opens clearly but sometimes not.
    There is no problem at all when I install "ArchBang 64-bit". This seems to be that I missed to install some specific package.
    Any idea?
    Last edited by balente84 (2011-09-02 19:30:21)

    This is a strange problem, and probably something stupid I've done. If I move my mouse to the lower right hand side of the desktop
    (bottom panel or system tray it freezes for a second or so).
    This problem is repeatable on Xfce4.8 and also E17 desktop.
    I have a microsoft optical mouse, so its not (mechanical mouse ball). More specifically I'm running at 1280x1024 res and the area
    where the mouse pointer sticks is about 4cm from the right hand screen edge and 1cm down.
    I am using an Ati Radeon HD4770 card with the proprietry fglrx driver  Catalyst 11.5 and graphics acceleration is fine.
    My /etc/X11/xorg.conf below:
    Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier     "aticonfig Layout"
        Screen      0  "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
    EndSection
    Section "Module"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        Option        "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
        Option        "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
        Option        "DPMS" "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
        Identifier  "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Driver      "fglrx"
        BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
        Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
        Device     "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Monitor    "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        DefaultDepth     24
        SubSection "Display"
            Viewport   0 0
            Depth     24
        EndSubSection
    EndSection
    Being lazy I actually used this xorg.conf from PCLinux but I dont have the same mouse probelem on E17 or Xfce in PClinux.
    When the freeze occurs  I cannot use keyboard, then about a second later, I have control again. The system works normally and no
    errors are wrote to /var/log/messages.
    Only thing I can find in /var/log/Xorg.0.log is a warning:
    [  3651.919] Warning: LookupWindow()/SecurityLookupWindow() are deprecated.  Please convert your driver/module to use dixLookupWindow().
    Before using fglrx I was using the radeon driver. This is probably something stupid on my part, I am installing a  new hard drive shortly so will
    be re-installing.
    The problem is as if some application is stealing the mouse focus, but I cannot understand why it is happening to that specific area on the screen.
    Thanks in advance for any insight.
    Some hardware:
    Intel i5 750
    Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (Intel P55A chipset)
    ATI Radeon HD5770

  • [SOLVED] KDE 4.5.2: lost icons of Pidgin, Skype... from System tray

Tried to change icon theme, played with icons folder mentioned in topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=103689 but so far no luck. There are not even blank spaces instead of icons. • [SOLVED]KDE does not remember window state, restoring from System Tray

    Hi,
    I'm facing a problem with some KDE applications that dock in the system tray, like Amarok and Konversation. I like to keep these apps maximized. But when I restore them from the system tray, they always revert back to their original, unmaximized size. Is there any workaround or fix for this?

    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] IceWM: "notification area" / taskbar / system tray

    Hello!
    I've recently moved from Gnome to IceWM. It all works nicely but there's a problem. In Gnome (and KDE and fluxbox and pypanel and ...) there was a "notification area" / taskbar / system tray where you could see "minimized to tray" programs, such as: Wicd, Deluge, Transmission, Emesene, etc... But in IceWM that doesn't exist. Well this is a pain in the *ss. I mean, I open deluge, minimize it and now I can't open its main window again.
    Can some IceWM user help me?
    Thanks, acmps

    It should be all there in a default IceWM setup, esp. does IceWM hava a built-in system tray.
    Mostly it depends on how you start IceWM. You need to execute icewm-session in your ~/.xinitrc, as e.g.
    exec icewm-session
    Or if you want to start IceWM manually, use
    xinit /usr/bin/icewm-session
    There should be a ~/.icewm folder. If not, create one and copy /usr/share/icewm/{keys,menu,preferences,toolbar,winoptions} there. These are well commented setup files which you can change to your needs with any text editor.
    Thanks! I was used to start IceWM with "exec icewm" in xinitrc, but it seems like it's icewm-session. About the .icewm folder, I already have it. I'm going to try and start IceWM with icewm-session right away.
    EDIT: It seems like I don't need to start icewm-session to get the tray, just icewm and icewmtray. Thanks!

  • Compiz Fusion standalone system tray problem

    Hello everyone,
    My name is Ivan and this is my first post on the forums. I've been using Arch happily for about two years now and managed to solve all my problems using this magnificent forum as my main source for help.
    Anyway, since I had some spare time today I figured giving Compiz Fusion a try after using Openbox for quite some time. Thus far, I like it and I really see its potential, I'm experiencing however some minor issues which I would like to get resolved. First and most important is the system tray, which doesn't seem to function correctly. Why? Well, I use tint2 as my panel (although I would like to get rid of it eventually when I get used to compiz) and it starts together with compiz using a simple script.
    #!/bin/bash
    (sleep 5 && tint2) &
    (sleep 5 && tilda) &
    fusion-icon
    I use sleep to make sure the panel loads after Compiz, but I tried to remove it and it didn't solve my problem. My problem is namely that as soon as everything is started all I see in my tray is the fusion-icon. Which is fine, but the first thing I do next is power up Pidgin which doesn't show up at all. I've tried google and these forums but just couldn't find anything similar to my problem. The weird thing is, when I fired up Steam to play CounterStrike Source in Wine the icon showed up, but there was a gap between the fusion icon and the newly created Steam icon. Therefore I'm still not entirely sure whether this problem is caused by Pidgin incompatibility with Compiz or simply some kind of configuration issue.
    It is also worth to note that using any other (standalone) system tray program (stalonetray, trayer) I have the same issue. The main reason I need a system tray in the first place is because of Pidgin and the fusion-icon thingy which seems pretty handy to change settings on the fly, so I would really like to get this working if possible.
    My second question, be it minor is Conky. I rekon we all know this program since a desktop isn't a desktop without Conky. Anyway, is there a way to tell Compiz NOT to maximize over it, since I have this nifty horizontal bar running across my screen which I would like to have visible at all times. In OB I simply set the layer to desktop in my conkyrc and told OB to obey a 20 px rule for the top of my screen. Is such a thing possible in Compiz or is there some other workaround which may give me the same effect?
    I thank you all for your time and hope that somebody might be able to help!
    Kind regards,
    Ivan
    EDIT: Ok, something more I can say is that when I start pidgin and then restart tint2 the icon DOES show up, but if I exit pidgin and restart it the icon won't come back...also, the gap I was talking about after starting Steam dissapeared when I completely closed pidgin.

    I have managed to solve my problems now, I think there is some kind of bug in the Tint2 system tray because it turns out that after I reconfigured and fired up stalonetray everything seemed to function. As for my Conky question, I found out that that window placement and rules can do a lot!
    Now that I've found the perfect WM for myself, my next step is making all of this work on a clean Arch64 install.

  • Search protect icon in system tray (still there after deleting)

    Hello i got infected with search protect (conduit). In my firefox, IE and Chrome browser my startpage got changed to mystartsearch or something like that.
    I changed the startpages and deleted installed programs by the normal windows add and remove programmes tool in the configuration screen. I ran kaspersky.
    Everything was cleaned it seemed besides 2 things. When i clicked new tab in firefox the mystartsearch page started in that tab. I solved this bij intalling a firefox tab add on. Than i changed the page that had to open when opening a new tab.
    Another problem is a blue e icon in my system tray that i can't get away. It is started when my computer starts up. I can't click it, nothing happens. When i move with my mouse over it, "search protect, click to configure" is shown.
    I disabeld programs in my startup configuration. I searched fot this program, but i can 't find anything than seems to be related to search protect. I searched for removal assistance on the internet but i can only find A to Z procedures, which are useless. The program already seems to be deleted from my computer but the icon keeps starting up on my computer.
    Can somebody help? Do i have to reinstall search protect to delete it properly? And where can i find a "harmless" version of this program? It is a bit sick to reinstall an infected programm to redelete it. I prefer other solutions, but that icon on startup is irritating me and i wonder if it is still harming my computer.

    You already uninstalled Search Protect from the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program? Could you check again for anything strange. After the list loads, I suggest clicking the "Installed on" column heading to group items by install date. This can help surface innocently named bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
    You can search for remaining issues with the '''scanning/cleaning tools''' listed in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
    Regarding the new tab page, you shouldn't need an add-on to regain control.
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''newtab''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click the '''browser.newtab.url''' preference and enter your preferred page:
    * ''Page thumbnails (default)'' => about:newtab
    * ''Blank tab'' => about:blank
    * ''Built-in Firefox home page'' => about:home
    * ''Any other page'' => full URL to the page
    Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?
    Some gotchas:
    ''If Firefox won't let you edit this setting:'' you may still have SearchProtect on your system.
    ''If Firefox lets you save your change but ignores it:'' one of your other extensions may be overriding it. You can review, disable, and/or remove extensions on the add-ons page:
    "3-bar" Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > ''in the left column click'' Extensions
    ''If the change works during your session, but at the next startup is back to MyStart:'' you might have a user.js file in your personal Firefox settings folder (your Firefox profile folder). This article describes how to track down and remove the file: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    Any luck?
