[Solved]Pacman fails on sync

Hello there Archlinux folks!
Today, my beloved little home server, running Arch, was a real pain in the ... and I had to realize, the fact: I need the help of ppl who understand this better than I do.
As a related matter, I just bought a Network Media Player today, so I needed to modify my server a bit, like setup XBMC for upnp sharing, and Pacman showed me a "funny error message". With all due respect, I cannot reproduce the original anymore, - but it looked kinda same - since I tried to sync pacman with the repositories, and that somehow altered the current setup. Also tried to enable another repositories, but it did not helped.
Now if I try to install something, like # pacman -S xbmc the following error message is triggered:
[root@hoth estol]# pacman -S xbmc

The most confusing part is, that even a simple management command - like # pacman -Syu - is also triggering an error:

@skunktrader: yes, I tried, no it did not helped.
@karol: mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, a friend of mine hooked me up with this distro, and set it to be hungarian as default, now I know how to change it - to be honest, this language annoys the crap out of me.
@TigTex: yes, the host is alive, I can even browse the contents.
Thanks for all the help, as it turned out, the problem was hardware related. Time to put her down.

    Hi flangemonkey,
that mirror was not synced yet when you did the upgrade (the last sync ended today at 10:54 UTC, about 17 mitues after you posted on this borad). It should be ok now, just try to redo the update. Next time, you may want to check first the status of the mirrors https://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/status

  • [SOLVED] Pacman failed retrieving file 'core.db' after removing KDE

Hey, I had to remove KDE and foolishly used the -Rsc flag. Now, trying to update yields:
    [root@Gal-PC2 gal]# pacman -Sy
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.isoc.org.il : Resolving timed out after 10524 milliseconds
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.us.leaseweb.net : Resolving timed out after 10523 milliseconds
I tryed using the -Sy and -Syy flags to update the database, and made sure I am not using ipv6. I think the -Rsc flag might deleted an importent package. I can connect to the net, and I can acess mirrors using http and I can ping the mirrors. The error persists on a large number of mirrors. Any help will be appriciated.

    EDIT: SOLVED!
Ok, so I did indeed disable ipv6 as I promised, but turns out I put in the GRUB kernel line "ipv6.disable_ipv6=1". Upon re-reading the wiki, turns out this means ipv6 is disabled but tunnels with ipv6 may be opened by programs. I changed to "ipv6.disable=1" and pacman updates away! I hope others will find this usefull. Be careful!

Not sure what was the issue in your case, but I did say "Try to ignore the conflicts and see if it works out." and by that I meant the '-dd' switch.

  • [Solved]Pacman fails to connect to server in Arch Virtual Machine

    Hi
I've just installed arch 2008.06 in VMWare Workstation 6.04 on Vista Business x64. The setup all went fine and i am now logged into my system, but Pacman refuses to connect to anything. i have tried Bridged networking and NAT to no avail. whenever i run 'pacman -Syy' i get the message
"error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : File unavailable (e.g.,file not found, no access)"
followed by the same message for each mirror in my mirrorlist, and then again for 'extra.db.tar.gz' and 'community.db.tar.gz', and then 'failed to synchronise any databases' at the end.
I have tried pinging google, as well as several of the arch mirrors and they all work fine. wget also seems to work fine, it's just pacman that's not working.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

That's what i thought too so i switched off the Vista firewall and still no luck. I am behind a hardware firewall here at work, but it shouldn't be blocking FTP traffic. i use FTP in windows all the time.
Just tried downloading a file using wget and it worked fine.

You must use pacman -Syy when changing mirrors. openjpeg is at version 1.4-1. You should not expect to find openjpeg 1.3-3 anywhere.

  • [SOLVED] Pacman hangs at sync

Any idea why? I got my rt73 wireless working, and was able to go on the internet with links, but synchronizing with pacman is stuck at 'Synchronizing Package Databases'.
Is it because pacman is too old and I need to upgrade it first or what?

Ok. Just solved it. Had to upgrade pacman. thanks.

  • [SOLVED] pacman fails on a package that should've been ignored anyway

    Hi all,
I don't understand why the below upgrade isn't working.  I exclude the kernel from my normal upgrade command as it prevents me from loading any modules until I reboot, so I typically only upgrade the kernel when I'm about to reboot.
In this case failure to upgrade the kernel is preventing the nVidia driver from being updated also, which is fine, but I don't understand why it then says it can't install 'nvidia' because 'nvidia-utils' is the wrong version - I thought 'nvidia' was going to be skipped?  Why is it trying to install it anyway?
Is there a way to get around this without having to manually exclude all these packages?

Ohhh, so you're saying it ignored nvidia, but tried to upgrade nvidia-utils.  nvidia-utils requires nvidia, but nvidia needs a specific version of nvidia-utils which would be broken by upgrading nvidia-utils, so it refuses to upgrade nvidia-utils because of the existing dependency.  Right.
So then the second part of my question - how can I get around this without adding nvidia-utils as an IgnorePkg?  Can I tell pacman to just ignore it if the deps couldn't be satisfied and keep going with whatever's left?

  • [SOLVED] Pacman and ABS sync give different results

I have been having a few issues with the NZ mirror, however they have been sorted. I have -Syy'ed a couple of times and get back:
    :: Starting full system upgrade...
local database is up to date
Which I know isn't the case as I visited the mirror via a browser and I can see Thunderbird 3 sitting there (taunting me)...
    So I did a
    # abs
and now in /var/abs/extra/ I have thunderbird 3 sitting there. How is that possible?

You open up the address in a browser and see all the files on the mirror and the dates they changed, there should be a file called extra.db.tar.gz which is the file listing what's on the mirror. You can also check mirror status on this page https://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html

  • (SOLVED) Pacman mirrorlist & DB Sync issue.

Hi, I messed with HDD through BSD and my HDD was wiped clean!(grr) anyways I reinstalled Arch with 2009.08 iso image. I've setup connections and enabled repos and updated mirrorlist. I can ping google and browse it through links. System behaves normally. But when I try to install/search ANY package, it says not found in SyncDB.
I've double checked the package names and also tried pacman -Syy, but still no joy
It says core, extra & community are up to date, but stilll wont find kde, apache, alsa-utils etc.. I have not modified pacman.conf in any way. Help!

Most likely, your mirror is out of synch. Look into your mirrorlist and determine the first enabled mirror from top of the file, then check against
    https://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html
Pacman will pick the first mirror out of your list as long as it is reachable and if the mirror is out of synch, you won't get any updates.

  • [Solved] Pacman Failing to do -Syu

Yesterday for no explicable reason, Pacman -Syu does not work. Installs work fine -S.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Log out put below. After entering the command it just sits there, does nothing, even after 5 mins, was thinking it may be the update server was overloaded and slow. Prior to yesterday updates were nearly instantaneous. I have reinstalled pacman, but same results. Once in awhile after 10 or so tries it will get the core files, then stop again, of course the lock file must be  removed after any attempts.

I have tried switching mirrors as suggested in numerous places, that of course was the first thing I did before consulting anyone, as it seemed that the repository server was not being contacted. Unfortunately there is nothing in the log files, next to impossible to find the problem without errors to point to something.  I could compile the kernel for additional debugging purposes, not going to spend the time to find what is corrupted, a clean install can be faster, though I will have to re-install the packages I need, most of which I did from source because they are not in any repositories, some of my own making, some from other people, and others that are propriety. Going to give it a rest for now, will either reinstall or go to another flavor because it may be a case of corrupted file, difficult to find with no errors.
I am also considering Slackware and LFS. I am thinking that LFS may be the best, since I always end up fixing what some package maintainer made a mistake on, so I might as well spend my time and money for myself rather than others and get told to sexually assault my mother, not a very good trade off. I am simply looking for a new minimal flavor for my extensive home network and some backup and monitoring servers in my home office. Since I have a business to run, spending hours each day or week fixing what should have not happened in the first place, is not an option. I started out with LFS in the mid 90's, played with Slack, used Suse for a bit in 1999 for business purposes, then Gentoo for the past 10 years for business and pleasure, first computer in 81. Since I need to run some programs that are self generated and or not available via any repository. I have the feeling LFS is going to be my final decision, since the fast easy route is usually not the best route and ends up taking more time in the long run, already spent hours on this error, could of done a LFS install and been running cleanly by now. Only hurdle with LFS is package managing, will have to see what is out their for LFS for which I can customize for my own needs, have not looked at LFS for many years.
I am not saying that there is something wrong with Arch Linux, just that it may not be the right choice for my needs. My problem may simply be a corrupted file that has nothing to do with Arch Linux in it self, though I do wonder because if it was a corrupted file from the initial install,
it should have presented itself right off the bat not a week later. Which leads to how did a file get corrupted, or how did it get mis-configured if I did not do it myself, I find nothing wrong with the disk, no bad blocks or any other application affected. Usually a number of applications will start to get affected if the disk starts going bad and starts corrupting files. If other Arch Linux users are not having the same problem, then it must be an isolated case. .

Yes I know I have not been nice, they pushed me over the edge and I lost it, who would not after being told to sexually assault your mother by some nose wiper who is barely out of their diapers and has no clue, when all you tried to do is help. Any time away from my work costs me money, I am not going to pay to be treated that way any longer, that was the last straw.  I am getting crusty and mean in my old age, you should see what my feet are starting to look like, don't worry it will happen to you to!

i guess you meant no harm but try to stay on the topic, switch to a local mirror and try to do -Syu, LFS is not really a good choice for anything except home/hobby use, and you can make packages for any sotware using makepkg.

  • ITunes failing to sync, and error message 1621

A few days ago, my iTunes, upon noticing my iPod touch plugged in, reported that it had failed to sync do to a "dataclass error". The message said something along the lines of "iTunes was unable to load from dataclass services. try reconnecting." I did just that, unplugging the iPod and plugging it back in. This time, iTunes again failed to sync, saying that it was entirely incapable of interacting with the iPod, suggesting that I restore the thing. Though frustrated, I did that. 2 hours later, the iPod was fully synced from back up, and the problem was seemingly solved.
But now it just happened again, only worse. After telling me to try restoring, and after 5 minutes of iTunes trying to restore the iPod, it finally reported that it was unable to, reporting an "error message 1621, unkown error occured, unable to restore iPod." So, now I can't sync my iPod. Not only is iTunes currently unable to interact with it, it can no longer restore it either.
What's going on? Also, if it helps, this didn't start occuring until after I installed the 2.0 update. I have iTunes v7.7.1.11, and my iPod touch is updated to version 2.02.

i am having the same problem as well. anyone have any idea how to fix this issue?
    thanks, ff
