[SOLVED] pacstrap /mnt base base-devel won't work

Hello everybody
I got an issue with reinstalling my Arch. I created a CD with the archlinux-2012.10.06-dual.iso and the new installation framework.
I did the installation like the beginners guide its describe until i got an error with pacstrap
the pacstrap command from the title ends for me in an inter-conflict with util-linux and eject. It says I should remove eject BUT there is no package to remove. And on the other way around there is no eject to install only utils-linux (pacman -S eject want to install utils-linux).
what should i do? I know I act like a noob but i did it like the beginners guide told me. any suggestions?
perhaps i overlooked something
sincerely Troopa
PS: if there are after this issue some similar issues what can a solution be there for?
PSS: sorry, I'm swiss not american or briton

now i've tried to burn a CD again with the pacstrap and co. this time with md5 sum check (it was total equal) and on the fresh installed system ( with the old CD incl. AIF). it didn't work but now for some reason its not eject anymore but systemd-sysvcompat inter-conflicts with sysvinit. thats because from the "older" CD i did a kind of a workaround for eject, i don't know what i've done for that, sorry.
i created the installation CD with wodim from cdrkit with follow command:
wodim -v dev=/dev/cdrom archlinux-2012.10.06-dual.iso
(output of the procedur is not accessable anymore but works fine i think)
did I something wrong with it? is the command wrong or something else?

  • [solved] cannot install pacstrap /mnt base to UEFI without internet

    Hello everybody.
Today I decided to install ArchLinux because of some problems on my Linux Mint System.
On my laptop Lenovo yoga 13  while using Mint I installed Wi-Fi drivers after installation. It is not working out of the box.
There is no Ethernet port on this laptop.
In Begginer's Guide I have read that internet may be set up later. Ok, I skipped it and do next steps as in manual.
When I go to step of installing base system the following happens
    # pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
Error strings are running: could not get file ... from ... Could not resolve host ...
    And at the end:
    Cannot synchronize any database
Cannot start request (error in boot library)
Error ==> Failed to install pakages to new root
I stopped here. Why it tries to connect to internet?
P.S. I am installing from fresh iso from 2014.05.01 via LiveUSB.
Please tell me what should I do?

Again, I cannot download anything, so I need to install theese packages the same way as I try to install this one for wifi?
And for installing theese pkgs, perhaps, I will need to install packages, dependent on theese? Oh... Recursion.

  • [SOLVED] question about base-devel

    Hi,
Im a newbei to Linux and to Arch.
After my last install, few days ago, i managed to do something that totally wrecked my system.
So I reinstalling. In the Wiki Installation guide, official and unofficial it says
    Install the base system
    # pacstrap -i /mnt base
I wander why the base-devel was removed.

  • [Solved] Setting xterm to xterm-256color won't work as described

My goal was to set TERM to xterm-256color as described in the wiki but it doesn't work.
I tried to add xterm*termName: xterm-256color to ~/.Xresources (with .xinitrc containing [[ -f ~/.Xresources ]] && xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources) and /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. Merging the setting manually with  xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources was also without luck.
Additionally i tried to add the line export TERM=xterm256-color to /etc/profile and to a custom script in /etc/profile.d.
I've also checked if even the scripts were executed by creating a file with touch. The file was created, so /etc/profile was executed.
The only way to set TERM to xterm-256color was by adding export TERM=xterm256-color to my ~/.zshrc (~/.bashrc would've worked also), but this is the way how it should not be done and furthermore i would like to set xterm to use 256 colors system-wide.'
I use XFCE, gnome and gdm if this helps.

Are you using xterm or are you using Xfce's Terminal app?  I ask because there has been confusion in the past about setting $TERM for Xfce's Terminal. See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=175581
From the documentation for the Xfce Terminal Preferences, http://docs.xfce.org/apps/terminal/preferences, under Compatibility:
    Emulation setting
This specifies the terminal emulation. This does not only set the $TERM value, but also the input conversion of the VTE widget. By default this is set to xterm, if changed /etc/termcap will be read to get the emulation values.
If you have an application that needs $TERM for correct functionality, it is better to set this manually in your ~/.bashrc file (or whatever shell you use) and set the terminal emulation as xterm to avoid incorrect characters in the Terminal.

  • [Solved] Weird base-devel update error

It's been a while that for almost all the packages in base-devel yields an error when updating. Please see update output below.
I have tried to empty cache with pacman -Scc, and the pacman log under /var only says that it has installed the packages, without any errors. I have not experienced any issues with the packages though.
The only non-standard thing about my system is that I am using bcache with ext4. I wouldn't guess that that could affect, but I mention it for good measure.
Is there any ideas about what I can do to find out about this?

  • [Solved] pacstrap fails on invalid signature for glibc

I'm trying a fresh install of Arch, but while following the beginner's guide, I encounter an issue when running `pacstrap /mnt base base-devel`.
When it has downloaded all packages and it finishes checking package integrity, I keep getting this:
error: glibc: signature from "Allan McRae <..>" is invalid
I have already tried `pacman-key --init` and `pacman-key --populate archlinux`. But that doesn't solve the issue.
I have also tried a different mirror, but that too didn't solve the issue.
What am I doing wrong? And how can I solve this problem.
*EDIT* Solved, I found out that pacstrap stored the database on /mnt/var/, by removing it and redownloading the packages, it solved my issue.

For future reference, you don't have to delete the whole cache, just the package that is corrupt. (in /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg/)

  • [SOLVED] Pacstrap connection time-out

SOLUTION: Don't be a newbie like me and not know what DNS stands for. What I did to solve my problem was simply modify my /etc/resolv.conf to point to 8.8.8.8 instead of my default gateway.
G'day everyone, I apologize in advance for my lack of experience.
I understand this distribution is not for beginners, but I personally love steep learning curves as it provides the most enjoyable and interesting experience for me.
It's also the fastest way to learn.
Albeit, I have yet to even successfully install Arch!
I'm a little put off, but I've already deleted my Windows partition so now I am committed.
Anyways, so I've been following the absolutely wonderful Beginner's guide. But I seem to have made some huge mistake, or something is terribly wrong.
I'm only upto the part where it suggest typing "pacstrap /mnt base base-devel".
However when I put that command in, I am eventually returned with:
    1 root@archiso ~ # pacstrap mnt base base-devel
==> Creating install root at /mnt
    ==> Installing packages to /mnt
warning: database file for 'core' does not exist

error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.aarnet.edu.au : Connection time-out
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from ftp.iinet.net.au : Connection time out
Etc etc. I tried using the original Mirrorlist and that gave me back 30 odd different server connection time outs. So I switched to just the Australian servers. It managed to download the 'extra' and 'community' packages when I swapped (they weren't downloading earlier either).
I've done a bit of searching (probably not enough) but I'm about to head off to sleep as it's almost midnight and I have work tomorrow. So I figured there's no harm in posting as that gives people many hours to respond. What I did find in my searching was that things like this occur when iPv6 is enabled. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of restarting (or so I believe), because as you may have seen I'm actually trying to still install! So I'm a little stuck? Any help at all is appreciated, even if it's like

  • [SOLVED]Pacstrap causing error "bad interpreter"

    Hi,
I am not "extremely" new to Arch as I've installed Arch on a machine(not mine) a couple of years back. But I don't exactly remember the steps. I used Lubuntu in my machine(HP dm1z) for a long time and I can be considered as a newbie here. So I went through the Installation Guide and started installing. Intro over.
So the problem is when I try to install the base system using pacstrap:
    pacstrap /mnt base
    it gives me the error
zsh: /usr/bin/pacstrap: bad interpreter: /bin/bash: no such file or directory
The installation media I use is a USB stick and I used Win32DiskImager to burn the image on to it. I tried the iso on vmplayer in my windows machine and was able to install it successfully.
    What could be the issue?
Last edited by jrbalu (2013-06-02 03:56:39)

I failed to mention it but I was checking the beginner's guide also. There seems to be not much help in the beginner's guide too, if the error I mentioned above occurs. I googled as vast as I can but failed to find a solution.

  • `pacstrap -i /mnt base` fails because of linux 'leftovers' [SOLVED]

    Hi,
In the process of trying to install Arch (on Acer Aspire V3, UEFI Bios, dual-boot with win 8.1) I accidentally skipped the step of manually creating a configuration file to add an entry for Arch Linux to the gummiboot manager. As a result I could not boot into arch and also failed chrooting into it. I then tried to wipe out the linux partitions (root and home) and reinstall the base system, but after wiping them out and loading again arch from the live USB and running
    pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel
    I got the following error:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    linux: mnt/boot/vmlinuz-linux exists in filesystem
I tried looking it up online but the only similar thing I could find was the Beginners guide entry saying I should run:
    pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux
I ran it but it didn't help me.
    I also ran
    efibootmgr -B -b <number>
to delete the linux entry but that did not help either (i.e. the linux entry is gone, but I still get that error message).
I'd like to wipe out any remaining 'leftovers' of the old linux installation and make a new one, without damaging my windows installation (which I assume should mean without wiping out the EFI partition).
    How can I achieve that?
Last edited by rangel (2014-02-25 09:45:31)

I have root and home on two separate partitions. I wiped them by deleting the partitions and making new ones using cgdisk. According to this I mounted the EFI system (which is on a separate partition, which came with the win installation) on /mnt/boot using:
    mkdir -p /mnt/boot
    mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/boot
I assume (but not entirely sure) that I should delete whatever's left in the EFI partition, but I'd like to do it 'surgically' and not wipe it out (so as not to damage the win installation).

  • Base-devel group additions

I see there is an 'add more to base-devel' todo list https://www.archlinux.org/todolists/#201 listed but i can't find any discussion about this anywhere.
Are packages that's gonna be added to base-devel also be part of base too?
That seems to be the case, since pacman is in the list but since it's assumed that users have at least the base group installed what is the reason of adding those packages to yet another group?
Pacstraping both base and base-devel would just result to installing some packages twice.

Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.

You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.

Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • Install - Missing Grub, passwd etc, only base-devel category available

    So hey,
I'm trying to install Arch and when it comes to packages, I install them and all goes well until I try to set the root password and install the boot loader. I get passwd doesn't exist errors and Grub is apparently not installed. I also can't edit rc.conf because it's considered a new file.
Regardless of which ftp I choose, and even if I choose the CD I'm only getting base-devel as a category to choose packages from, which doesn't include grub. I'm not seeing any reference to this in the manual, so where did I go wrong?
    Thanks

Okay, I just tried it again via FTP and after downloading everything it goes to checking package integrity and fails with
Error: failed to commit transaction (corrupted package)
file usbutils-0.73-5-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz was corrupted (bad md5 checksum)
file wpa_supplicant-0.5.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz was corrupted (bad md5 checksum)
Errors occured, no packages were upgraded.
And it ends there, so I'm assuming the real problem is that it never installed anything.
Sever I was using was mirrors.unixheads.org and it failed before off of mirror.cs.vt.edu
Edit: trying to install from the livecd it fails with an error on the first terminal that's lists a bunch of packages and is too long to read. In the output terminal all it says is
    ::Synchronizing packages databases... core core
local database is up to date
    ::Synchronizing package databases....
    core is up to date
local database is up to date
Going to reboot and purge the partitions and start from scratch with install from the cd.

  • Requesting for [base-devel] packages information

Hi, I have read alot of threads related to this but I think its not yet clear...My arch installer gives me the "base-devel" from "Select Package Categories"...What I would like to know is the package information of every package on the list.  Since my netbook has only 8gb of SSD, I can't waste space for unnecessary packages...:( Thanks in advance
