[SOLVED] partition problem

Hello,
I try to install Arch linux on a dualboot with Windows7 on one disk.
I have 100G avaible for Arch Linux.
So I went on with the installation.
Came into the cfdisk screen and make one big partition of 100G.
Click on write and on quit.
But then I came to the screen where the disk must be partioned.
What did I do wrong ?

I don't exactly know for certain that cfdisk was ended correctly.
But as you said I made one partition of  linux-83 but I saw a message that the partition was not made bootable.
And that's correct otherwise I have to bootable partitions my windows partition and the arch  partition.
I think if the windows parition is not bootable I cannot boot anymore in Windows.

Well you need to resolve that backup issue first and combined we will solve your other issue.
Get a new blank external drive either the same size or slightly larger than your boot drive and open Disk Utility in your Applications > Utilities folder.
Select the external drive makers name on the far left and click Erase and Security option > Zero all data on the new external drive, let it complete it will take some time.
If your on 10.7, the Erase function and select the next to the far right option, that's a Zero Erase, the 7x takes too long and isn't necessary as the Zero erase is enough to map off any failing sectors.
Once that is finished, download the free to use (donations) Carbon Copy Cloner and clone the OS X drive (10.7 partition) to the external drive using the default settings, just select drive A and B and click clone. Wait for this also takes some time.
Hold the option key down and select the cloen to boot from, check it out, it's a exact copy. Cool.

You got burned, because iDefrag doesn't move data in that fashion, it only attempts to defrag files and still leaves data on the area where your trying to create the Bootcamp partition.
Your solution is to option key boot from the clone, Zero erase the OS X partition and reverse clone back onto the drive/partition. Provided you have the drive space avaialble for Bootcamp, then all the free space will be avaialble at the bottom of the drive to create the Bootcamp partition.
    see this
BootCamp: "This disc can not be partitioned/impossible to move files."

Reboot the machine holding Command and r keys down, you'll boot into Lion Recovery Partition
In there will be Disk Utility, use that to select your Lion OS X Partition and Repair Permissions.
After that is done reboot the machine and see if you can log in.
If not repeat the above steps to get into Lion Recovery, get online and reinstall Lion again, it will overwrite the installed version and hopefully after that it wil work.
    Reboot and try again.
If not follow my steps to create a Snow Leopard Data Recovery drive, then option boot from it and grab a copy of your files off the machine.
Then reinstall all your programs onto the external drive like setting up a new machine, then use Disk Utility to erase the entire internal boot drive (select the drive media on the far left, not the partiton slightly indented) format Option: GUID , 1 partition OS X Extended and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the external to the newly formatted internal drive. Once that is finished reboot and disconnect the external drive.
Once you go that, boot into Snow Leopard and update to 10.6.8, use the AppStore and option click on Purchases and download Lion again and install.
Lots of work, but there is no Lion disks.

  • [SOLVED] Installation problem with pacstrap

Hi guys, I am a new user of Arch Linux.
I wanted to try this operating system then I decided to install that on my Asus F200MA. Unfortunately, when I try to install ArchLinux, I get an error while downloading the base packages with pacstrap.
My HDD is made by 3 partitions:
/dev/sda1 - 51200 MB: This is the root partition
/dev/sda2 - 411690 MB: This is the home partition
/dev/sda3 - 4096 MB: This is the swap partition
After mounting these partitions, after using the pacstrap command and after the end of the download process, I get a few error messages:
error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
==> ERROR: Failed to install packages to new root
I really can't understand the reason of these errors, how can I solve the problem?
For formatting and mounting the partitions I used these commands:
    # mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
    # mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda2
    # mkswap /dev/sda3
    # swapon /dev/sda3
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
    # mkdir /mnt/home
    # mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/home
and then I used this command:
    pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
    Photo of the errors: http://i.imgur.com/4BRhlC7.jpg
P.S.: Can you also explain me the reason of the signature's errors?
    Thanks for all

  • Hard Drive Partition Problems

I recently installed a new HD in my iMac DV SE. I thought I'd be clever and make three partions, 2 8GB OS drives (one is blank - I was thinking about Linux, but too lazy to do it and don't need to right now) and one ~100GB for my music, files, etc. that I can share without too much worry.
The problem I'm having is that Tiger uses a lot of virtual memory and if my computer is on for awhile, or I'm doing multiple things, my OSX drive fills up with VM (I think) and I get the "Your HD is almost full" (the error that originally drove me to buy a new HD)
Of course quitting out of programs and restarting fixes the problem, but sometimes my computer slows down so much I find myself using that magic little button on the side and restarting it (how bad is this really?)
What I want to do is take the extra OS partition and combine it with the other OS partition so that the OS can use as much VM as it pleases. Can I do this without wiping the whole drive?
Also, if I have to wipe the whole drive, what is the best way to store my data so that I can put it back how it was, maybe an image file (never done this before)? Maybe a link to a site that explains it or something?
I know that buying more memory would also solve this problem, and I plan on doing this in the future, but I'm a poor college student, so that isn't an option for awhile
    Thanks,
    Eric

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and then type or paste in /private/etc/ as the folder's location. Make two copies of the file rc inside that folder, and put one copy on the desktop, and the other in the Documents folder of your home folder. Open the copy in the Documents folder with a text editor and locate the text swapdir inside. After the =, replace /private/var/vm/ with /Volumes/volumename/vm/ . Replace volumename with the name of the the partition; this requires that the partition's name doesn't contain spaces or other special characters. Once done, replace the existing file and restart the machine to change the location of the VM swap files.
If you encounter any problems after doing this, you can restore the original rc file by restarting your machine from the Mac OS X install disk and opening the Terminal application. Enter the following: "mv /Users/yourname/Desktop/rc /Volumes/diskname/private/etc/rc" without the quotes, and after replacing yourname with the short name of your user account and diskname with the name of your normal partition. If either contains spaces, you will need to enclose the whole path in quote marks.

That is indeed unfortunate. You will need to order a recovery disk set from HP or an HP Partnet. Here is how to order a recovery disk set.

  • Windows Partition Problem.....

As I am sure you all have seen this many times before....I've tried looking at other discussion threads to help solve my problem but they either didnt have the exact same problem or I couldnt fully understand the answers.  Myself, Im rather inexperienced with Mac and its OS so Layman's terms usually work best with me.  Im running Leopard right now, whatever the latest version is; 10.6.8 I believe.  I'm trying to run a parallel now since something is apparently wrong with the sound on my XP disk when I installed it, twice.  This has been a long and drawn out process for me please bare with me, for I may ask some stupid questions....
    Ok.
So I've deleted the Windows partition in Boot Camp Assisstant successfully, however, a version on Windows (named: Untitled) is still showing up in my finder and when I hold down the Option key on the start up.  I tried erasing it with Disk Utility, it looked like it started to do something, but all it did was remount it.  Now, when I try to go through BCA its gives me the message: "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows." No clue as to what in THEE **** its talking about.  Of course I've tried ejecting it but it doesnt get rid of it nor does it gives me my 99GB of Mac OS back.
Be honest, did I **** up or did I **** up bad somewhere down the line while installing windows? And what (if anything) can I do?
Again, thanks for your time and help in advance.

Sounds like something went wrong when you sued the BootCamp Assistant to remove the Windows partition since usually that also reassigns the used diskpace back to OSX.
    1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
    2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
    3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
    4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
    5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
    6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
    7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
    After that's done successfully
    8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
    9) Quit Disk Utility
    10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.

  • Partitioning Problems

I partitioned my hard drive a while back to run Ubuntu and decided I didn't feel like doing that after all. I tried to go back into Boot Camp to remove the partition but I get a notice saying "The Startup Disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition." So, I figured the Disk Utility would help me out after reading some steps to solve my problem by that. So, I open disk utility and I find that I have 5 partitions labeled BOOTCAMP, DISK0S4, Linux Swap, DISK0S6, and Linux Swap. I click on BOOTCAMP and press the - button and it says "Preparing to remove volume." It remains on here indefinitely and I have to quite the application to do anything within Disk Utility. This happens on any of the partitions I try to remove. Does anyone have an idea of how to remove the partitions in place?

I went to the Apple Store and it seems the only way to completely fix my hard drive is to copy my current HD onto an external HD and reinstall it after wiping my computer clean. Not very easy, but it would work.

  • Select from partition problem

    hi all,
hope i'm in the right forum. i have 2 databases sitting in 2 separate machines. 1 installed with Oracle 9i and 1 with Oracle 10g. I'm trying to select a partitioned table in 9i remotely (from the 10g db). In order to do that, I've created a synonym in 10g pointing to the partitioned table in 9i.
In 9i, if i do a select "select count(*) from tableA partition (p1)", i'm able to grab the correct count of the partition. But when i use the same select statement in 10g, it's grabbing all the data of the table, sum of all partitions. it looks like the partition qualifier specified in the select statement has no effect. Can i know what is the problem? hope to get some response a.s.a.p. tq
    regards,
    ykl

I did recreate your same situation, and actually the result is the same. I get that result when using a synonym. If I use <table name>@<db link> instead of synonym, then the result is different :
ORA-14100: partition extended table name cannot refer to a remote object
(internal unpublished bug 3076633, fixed in 10.2)
In my case I can solve the problem using partition key, instead of partition name, that is
    SQL> select count(*) from <partition table synonym> where <partition key> = <value>;
    instead of
    SQL> select count(*) from <partition table synonym> partition(<partition name>);

  • Partition problems please help

I am running osx lion, and i had a partion of snow leopard which i just delee via disk utility.  But now i am unable to use that free space on the hard drive.  Can anybosy shead sme light on how to fix this for me?

OK, I see why. You cannot extend a partition UPward. Here's what you can do. Create a new OS X partition in the upper portion. Clone "Steves Mac HD" to the new partition and set it as your default startup disk - open Startup Disk preferences, select the new volume, click on the Restart button.
Now you can delete the old partition from the bottom and extend the remaining partition to the rest of the space. This will take some time but it will solve your problem.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears.
Select Disk Utility from the main menu.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new volume. Source means the existing "Steves Mac HD" volume

  • [SOLVED]Partitions not getting automounted at boot

    Hi,
After I while I wasn't using my laptop I've made a full update (ofc I've checked for announcement for any manual intervention needed but there was nothing new). On reboot slim failed to autologin so I've switched to console to check the .Xinitrc file but, as soon as I logged in, the terminal output said it couldn't get to the user home directory because it's not there , and in fact the /home directory is actually empty. Since I didn't deleted anything of course I guess my home is probably not getting automounted or something...can this be the problem? how can I solve this ?
    Thanks in advance

I've found in the boot log the message exactly reported in this thread.
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=170898
And I've seen the guy fixed the error message warning about the root device not being rw, message which I've never sorted out becuase I wasn't getting any real problem out of that. I've read further in the topic and I've found the link to another topic related to the RW root partition problem
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167153&p=4
However, modifying the default grub config and regenerating that (as in post #95, even if post #96 says it shouldn't be necessary anymore) does not fix the problem of the root partition not being mounted as read write and neither the problem of partitions not getting automounted.
    I'm getting a bit confused.
Edit: changing topic title to clarify

  • My MacBook Pro does not read NTFS format, how can I solve this problem?

I connected my external Hard drive to my Mac and it gives the error abou not reading the NTFS files... is there an app that can solve this problem?
    Thanks a lot

You can take the drive to a PC, off load the files and right click and format the drive exFAT or FAT and place the files back on, then the Mac can read it.
If you install NTFS reading software on your Mac, you will always be paying for it and it's updates, breaks your connections to the hard drive as well.
Neutral formats are best, proprietary ones that require one to pay is bad.

  • Fusion Drive New Partition Problem

    Hi everybody,
I'm having trouble while creating new partiton on free space area. After highlighting free space area i click plus icon and rename partition. After click apply but utility doing nothing. And log window says "Preparing to partition disk". But no action started. Please help me getting 700 gb free space back.

That 2.2 TB partition is how Apple solved the problem of Bootcamp not working with 3 TB drives.  The one parition is split so the first partition fits within the allowable partition size of 2.2 TB, needed for the Windows installer to work.  Partition 0 is then split again to allow the bootcamp partition to be added at the end of partition 0:
I had the same problem as Maxia, with my first attempt installing Windows failing and getting the two partitions.  I got to step 3.4 in the Boot Camp installation guide.  After formatting the BOOTCAMP partition, then clicking on Next, the Windows installer said it could not find the specified partition. I went back to Mac OS, deleted the Boot Camp partition using Boot Camp Assistant, did it again from the start, and got the same results.  I finally got it to work by rebooting using command R, to get into OSX recovery mode, choosing Disk Utility and running Repair Disk Permissions on the OSX partition.  I then rebooted to the Windows install procedure, and everything worked as it should.  I'm not 100% sure that repairing the permissions is what really did it; maybe just exiting the Windows installer, rebooting to Windows, and running the installer again would do the trick.
I also had a problem getting Boot Camp Assistant to download the Windows support software; as an alternative, you can download them directly from the Apple website at http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/downloads/. I also had problems getting the Nvidia graphics driver to load correctly in Windows, but on the third manual installation, it worked.  All this should have gone a lot smoother, but in the end Windows 7 looks fabulous in the iMac 27" monitor, and the iMac 680MX graphics card is quite impressive.  This is the way to do serious gaming on an iMac, with the only cost the Windows software, which is just under $100 on Amazon, for either Windows 7 or Windows 8 (the OEM System Builder Pack).

  • HT6195 Big problem with the last security update, how can I solve the problem?

Yesterday I installed the last system update in my secondary computer, a Macbook Pro (OS 10.8.5, if I remember well), from that moment is impossible to restart it. How can I solve the problem?
Today Apple is worst than Windows, but is considerably more expensive! I am seriously considering to change to Windows, in less than 3 months I had serious problems with two Apple computers and I changed 4 computers (always Apple) in less than 6 years.

    tmjavier,
feel free to use whichever operating system best suits your needs. Since this is a user-to-user forum, whether you use OS X or Windows will affect no one’s bottom line here.
Regarding your MacBook Pro, you can try booting it into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the  OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Is it able to reach the login screen now?
