[SOLVED] Permissions [UNSOLVED] & File manager madness...

Hi guys,
[Solved bit]
Been googling in circles and tearing my hair own over this stuff for sufficient time to warrant actually asking for help (a place I rarely end up in due to the wonderful Wiki and Google-foo)
I'm having some really odd mounting issues with two external drives. Both are formatted ext4, permissions and ownerships are all correct, yet I cannot access the drives as a normal user.
They mount  fine (I've tried mounting in multiple different ways as my user - from nautilus, dolphin and space filemanagers, and using pmount and udevil from the command line), but I cannot open any folders in any file managers (even ranger), I just get a pop-up saying "you don't have the correct permissions to view the contents of foo" - yet I'm the owner, the group is users and the permissions are 660 (and I can't chmod without sudo even though I'm the owner!).
Ok, so I just tried 777 and it does work and I have full access. But surely that's not right? I shouldn't need execute permissions to read and write to a drive - by definition! WTF?!
[Unsolved bit]
The other bizarre issue surrounding this, is that after I eject a device (either graphically or via sudo umount), and have verified via lsblk that it's no longer mounted) - it remains displayed in all my file managers and errors out when I click on it (duh!).
What on earth is going on here? I feel like I'm going mad! It's probably something absurdly obvious, but I'm going round in circles here...
I'd very much appreciate any insight anyone could provide, even if does result in a revealing me to total idiot! (it wouldn't be the first time!)  :-)

Ok, so I'm afraid the file manager thing is still not solved - obviously that was a separate issue...
Heres the message when I click on the drive that is no longer there:

No harm in dragging themes and icons into the relevant folders for systemwide access.
In fact I've changed the permissions of /usr/share/themes and /usr/share/icons to allow my user write access to save myself having to open a filemanager with root access when I want to add a new theme or icon set.

  • [SOLVED] Default Gnome File Manager

    Hello,
I installed Thunar and it has become the default file manager in Gnome, how can I change this back to Nautalis?
    Thanks.
Last edited by RAH (2009-02-16 20:10:26)

I am new to Arch but not quite so new to Gnome. I'm trying to do the same thing as RAH, I think. If I open Nautilus through the Applications menu as File Browser from the System Tools drawer, and then open a folder in Nautilus, the display in Nautilus jumps to the contents of the selected folder, just as it should.
But if I select a location to open from the Places menu, it opens in Thunar and any subsequent folders opened in Thunar are opened in a new window. I would like to know how to change this behaviour.
When right clicking a folder and then going to properties, I see no 'open with' tab. There is the 'Open With' option in the context menu, where I see "Open (folder name) and other files of type "folder" with:". After selecting File Browser this does nothing to change how the folders are opened from the Places menu.
I realize this is a trivial desire but I would appreciate any help I can get on the topic.
    Thanks.
    [EDIT]
    I found what I was looking for in gconf-editor -> apps -> nautilus -> preferences -> always_use_browser  (check mark).
Stumbled upon this looking for options to remove desktop icons.
    Have a good day. :-)
(Also what I thought was thunar seems to be a dfferent kind of browsing method in nautilus which is appearantly not "browser". )

  • [Solved] Changing default file manager (with i3)

    Hi!
Whenever I open whatever file in chromium it opens firefox and asks me with what I want to open it. (Not really lightweight. )
(The problem is the same with xdvi.)
I'd like to let thunar manage this. Can anyone tell me how to configure this in the system?
(I would be already graceful if somebody could tell me where it might be or for what I might search. I _did_ some research about that before this post.)
    Thanks in advance.

I still don't get it. Maybe you could be a bit more precise in describing your problem.
Two things I think you might be after are:
    a) do you want to be able to open files with application 'X' directly from within Chromium
    b) are you looking for the default applications in thunar.
If it's a), you may want to take a look at this: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=89053
I fit's b), right click on the file, choose 'open with' -> 'open with other application', choose program from list or click on 'Use a custom command', make sure that 'Use as default for this kind of file' is ticked.

    Yeah:
    /usr/bin/thunar

Go to Edit > Preferences > Applications Tab
Under file, change the action to "Use other..." and direct it to /usr/bin/thunar

  • Permz - Quickly change file permissions in any file manager

Designed to be integrated into any file manager, permz is a bash script which presents a GUI menu.  You can use it to quickly change file permissions and ownership as a normal user or as root, and delete files as root.  I wrote this because I have yet to see a file manager that isn't cumbersome for this - the mechanism is usually buried on a second tab of the Properties window, and changing permissions often involves multiple clicks in a grid. To change the owner of a file, you need to type the username. And if the file is owned by root, you can't do anything.
    permz --help
Presents a GUI menu for changing file permissions/ownership. May be run
as a normal user or root.
    Requires: zenity gksu
Optional: sudo (recommended to prevent multiple root password prompts)
    Usage: permz FILE [...]
    MENU FUNCTIONS:
rwxrwxrwx Sets file(s) to given permissions
Sticky Clear/Set Performs "chmod -t" or +t to clear or set the sticky
bit. You may select to clear/set sticky in addition
    to changing other permissions.
    Recursive go-rxw "chmod -R go-rxw" on file(s) recursively, denying
    access to non-owners
Recursive go-w "chmod -R go-w" on file(s) recursively, denying write
    to non-owners
Recursive ugo+rX "chmod -R ugo+rX" giving read access to all. Also
sets +x for directories and executables.
Recursive ugo+w "chmod -R ugo+w" on file(s), giving write to all
(You may select several compatible recursive functions above at once)
Owner USER As ROOT Sets ownership to USER:USER as root
DELETE As ROOT Deletes file(s) as root. Must be used alone or with
"Perform Recursively" (to delete directories - USE
WITH CAUTION). Not available if permz is run as root.
Perform As ROOT Run as root to change selected permissions.
(Use of root is automatic when changing ownership)
Perform Recursively Adds -R to all chmod, chown, and delete commands to
descend into subdirectories. Use in conjunction with
any other functions. (Recursion is automatic for
    "Recursive" functions above)
Current su command is set to: gksu -gS
If you're somewhat familiar with bash, adding additional options or changing the existing ones is straightforward.
I have tested it pretty thoroughly but if you do encounter anything amiss please let me know.
    More details at http://igurublog.wordpress.com/downloads/script-permz/
And in the AUR at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36978
Instructions for integrating permz into PCManFM-Mod are here.

rransom wrote:Recursive ugo+rX would be more useful than "Recursive ugo+r (dirs +x)".  (The +X feature of chmod is available at least in GNU coreutils, FreeBSD, and POSIX 2003.)
Done - thanks for the tip.  I also left the old code active in there with just the menu option disabled, so if anyone wants it the other way or wants both it's easy to enable.  The difference is that the old way won't make any files +x, just dirs.
permz doesn't provide every possible setting of permissions, just common ones, so you may want to customize it.  But I used to have these as user actions when I used Krusader and I found these were the handy ones, at least for me.

  • [SOLVED] PCManFM file manager not working for me

Hi, i'm having some troubles with PCManFM. Every time i want to open the file manager it just doesn't do anything, no errors and no feedback if i run it from a console. If i create a folder on my desktop and double click on it, file manager will pop up and i'm able to use it as it were no problems, but still when i close that window it won't open otherwise than clicking on the folder on the desktop. Any ideas?. It's a clean install, followed the wiki for lxde and i've been using linux for 10 years now, tried to figure it out but i couldn't. It's not my first time with arch but i took a break for the last 6 months, thanks in advance.
    ibfm 0.1.14-2 (lxde)
    pcmanfm 0.9.8-2 (lxde)
    cat /etc/rc.conf | grep DAEMONS

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus hal !network networkmanager dnsmasqd !netfs crond alsa)
    cat .xinitrc | grep exec
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
As i said before, there are no error messages.
    Update:
I've just found a lead (l think), if i kill pcmanfm process and rerun it the file manager works fine, the way it should, but desktop won't get managed.

  • [SOLVED]Iced Tea Fails to Launch Webmin File Manager

Last night I started receiving an exception error when trying to launch Webmin File Manager from my laptop. I googled combinations of Webmin File Manager and Java and found posts dating back to 2009, 2010 stating webmin didn't work well with Iced Tea but did work with Sun's Java. Fortunately the Arch Java wiki indicated jre existed in the AUR. So a simple,
    sudo pacman -Rs icedtea-web-java7
    followed by,
    sudo packer -S jre
and Webmin File Manager is accessible again.
My thanks to AUR maintainer Det.
Edit: After converting to jre I was able to access webmin filemanager but unable to access webmin ssh2. I reverted back to icedtea and went to the security console. i added https://serverip:10000/ to the exceptions and now both ssh2 and filemenager work.

  • [Solved] Auto-open a file manager after mounting with udev rules

    Hellooooo,
I followed the udev Wiki for auto mounting USBs and it now works great.
The only problem is: how can I automatically open a file manager of the mounted directory? I tried putting this at the end of the "ACTION=="add"," section in "/etc/udev/rules.d/11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rules" but for some reason nothing happens:
    , RUN+="/usr/bin/dolphin /media/%E{dir_name}"
Even if I just try to open dolphin with the "ACTION=="add"," section nothing happens either way.
So what am I doing wrong?
Last edited by algorythm (2011-05-05 12:35:56)

In that case, the best choice in my opinion is to use Automounting UDisks Wrappers :
devmon is a script developed by IgnorantGuru. He left Arch Linux, but the package in AUR is still there and is the last version. For a future new release, it should be available at his blog site. The script is distro independent.
My udisksvm script, in its default state, doesn't launch a file manager after automounting, but it is not a big thing to let the automounting be done and then manually open a file manager (a new entry in the traydevice right-click menu can also be added for that).
If you can do without automounting, there is also the bashmount script from jnguyen.
All these scripts don't require writing any udev rules, they use udisks instead.
I hope you could find something you like and which will suit your wishes.

  • [solved] dolphin file manager losing all custom places entries

    Hi all,
I am getting phantom problem with dolphin file manager, i added custom place entries there but suddenly they diappear from dolphin.
There is no any pattern in disappearance. They appear for few days without any problem, even after shutdown/reboot. But suddenly some day they disappear and i have to add them again.
I want to find cause of this problem then fix it.
Or at least find config file where dolphin store configuration about custom places that i can backup and restore to get back entries.
I checked ~/.kde4/share/config/dolphinrc but couldn't find there anything about custom places.
I am using KDE 4.14.5 and Dolphin 14.11.97

  • [SOLVED] A File Manager That Can Group Folders and Files like Fences

I want to create a custom desktop environment in Arch Linux and I'm looking for a file manager that is similar to Windows Explorer in terms of features and functionality and can group files and folders into fences like Stardock Fences does for the desktop in Windows.
If such a feature isn't available then I, at least, want to group both files and folders into individual groups based on custom parameters and not just Date or Size.
Is there any File Manager in Linux that can fulfill my requirements? If not, is there any file manager which can be extended (by scripting or programming) easily to include the features that I'm looking for?

If you've ever seen the exploere.exe process die for any reason, you know what I mean. That's the reason it's able to utilize functionality like Fences. In order to get the same kind of functionality in Linux, you'd need a very similar setup. KDE + Konqueror are what come closest from my experience, since the Plasma interface actually has widgets built in that do what you want, but if you use KDE then you use KDE. Full stop. KDE is highly customizable, but only if you use its environment and parts.
Nah. I don't wanna use KDE. I've heard that it's the most resource hungry DE out there.
OK, maybe not something like fences in a file manager but I, at least, want to be able to group files AND folders (within a folder or a directory) under a single parameter and that parameter can be custom and not just pre defined like Date and Size.
Huh. I'm down to Konquerer, like you suggested, and Dolphin. Can I use either as a stand alone file manager in a custom DE in Arch without using KDE?
