[Solved.]Possible GUI/Video Driver update break?

Yesterday, I did a Update/Upgrade like usual and everything seemed fine. After a reboot, GUI (XFCE) seemed slightly broken.
By "slightly" I mean, only one virtual desktop was available instead of the four I had set, and compositing wasn't working,
leading me to believe that something driver related was changed. I installed NVIDIA and NVIDIA-UTILS over my nouveau driver as stated in wiki (my card is Geforce 6200 agp). I was also in the process of tweaking my .xinitrc on unrelated problem and tried some settings with that but no help. I changed .xinitrc back to the way it was, but now I am stuck with SLiM login prompt that doesn't allow login, and TTY's seem to frozen on the output from loading the OS, not allowing me to fix from terminal.
Question 1: are the two problems related?
Question 2: was there recently a nouveau breaking update recently?
any ideas or directions on things to try are greatly appreciated, I am currently at work and unable to get to the arch
machine, so I am unable to post any output, just looking for some insight.

Intel HD video driver update forced antialiasing problem

X220, Windows 7 x64. After video driver update from version 8.15.10.2769 to 9.17.10.2843 I noticed the text is blurry because some kind of antialiasing has been applied. I use Windows Classic theme and have ClearType turned off. The kind of anti-aliasing was different than the one used in Windows. I had to revert back to driver version 8.15.10.2769 to get rid of that.
I haven't found any setting in Intel video advanced settings to disable it. Note that I'm talking about anti-aliasing in 2D mode, not 3D games. It seems as some kind of subpixel antialising has been applied by the driver

I am not sure if this will make a difference or not, but have you tried enabling ClearType and using the ClearType Tuner (filename: CTTUNE.EXE) to see if you can come up with a setting that you like?

Time for a Video Driver Update -- 'M' Series

As you all may know (I'll re-state it here for those that do not) nVidia forces the user to go to their manufacturer (in this case Apple) for all graphic driver updates for the mobile 'M' graphic chips in laptops or lower end boxes.
What I am searching/looking for from Apple is a MUCH needed graphic driver update. And please... do not suggest that I browse through laptopvideo2go.com as I want APPLE to release an official graphic driver update.
I am running into an issue where many of the newer games I attempt to play under Bootcamp refuse to run or highly advise updating the graphic drivers because of known issues/problems.
When visiting the nVidia website (support section) I find that the newest release on thier drivers refuse to install because they must SPECIFICALLY come from Apple (in the case of my MBP).
So... Apple, how about showing us some loving and updating the nVidia drivers. This would be MUCH appreciated.

It's not just Apple, that's a common practice for many laptop manufacturers. For example, my work laptop is a Gateway with an ATI chip and I can't use the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI's site, instead I have to use whatever drivers Gateway makes available, which haven't been updated in over 2 years.
I have a four years old Toshiba Notebook, for which the last ATI Graphics Driver Update from Toshiba was three years back.
I have used a modded ATI Driver package since then and no problem with it.
Luckily for me I don't have to rely on latest drivers, since the Notebook is only used for Business apps.
I agree with you, available video drivers need to be updated much more frequently than what is currently offered. I think 167.44 was the latest Nvidia driver officially released by Apple and that's pretty old by now.

Intel Video driver update

I am going to download a multimedia editing software that I am buying from an online store. They adviced to check if I need to update my Intel video driver, among other things. I went to Toshiba Site, and I don't see any video drivers updates available there. I then went to Intel, and there is one. My question is: Is it necessary to download this update from Intel?
The driver I have now is version: 10.18. 10 3345. The one in Intel is
Version: 15.33.32.64.4061 (Latest) Date: 01/08/2015
Toshiba Satellite P845t- S4305 laptop
Windows 8.1
IE 11
Computer is 1 year old.

I certainly can't answer that. But I do have some comments.
It's usually best to stick with the drivers that OEMs offer for laptops. That's because laptop makers sometimes tweak the chips and drivers. So the device maker's driver no longer works right. For that reason, I never permit Windows Update to change any drivers.
If you do get the newer driver from the Intel site, it will likely refuse to install, with a message something like..
The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer’s manufacturer. Setup will exit.
That doesn't necessarily mean it won't work - or even be better. It just means Intel doesn't want to be responsible for any troubles you may have.
They in fact offer a workaround here (scroll down).

HP Pavillion p6610t pc. Intel g41 chipset, Intel graphics media accelerator x4500 [vga].
I need driver update for gaming. Per Intel support, my driver is customized and cannot be updated. Additionally a generic driver would cause issues. I will purchase a new card if that is my only option. Help.

I believe 250W is the norm for HP consumer PC's without discrete video cards.
Maybe they put in a 300W P/S when you get an add on card.

ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 video driver update

I updated my video driver using the Lenovo update. The updated driver, 8.533.3.1-081110a-075168 79d177ww.exe is causing me to have extremely slow response time that I didn't experience previously. I am running with XP Professional (SP2). Is there a way to go to a back-level driver? Even typing this note is painfully slow. I have the latest BIOS and Presentation Manager.

you could also download the Omega ATI catalyst driver, which works just as great and have some more features.

trying to get a new game working thats proving finicky >^.^< some of my friends have had sucess via driver updates. im not finding drivers on the lenovo website, but i did find a more recent driver at..

"Critical" Video driver update corrupted video driver T400

I have a T400 type 6475 - P9U running windows Ultimate. This morning I noticed I had a message in the Thinkvantage Toolbox. The system had run a scan and determined that there were updates needed. Unfortunately I downloaded the two critical updates. One of them related the the video drivers. The installation hung with an error about ATI drivers not being present. I powered off and rebooted. Now the drivers are corrupted, can't access my second monitor, and the best resolution is 800 x 600. I tried to re-run the update and I get an access denied error, even if it is run as administrator. Lenovo support is no help, the warranty expired last November.
Any suggestions appreciated. I can download the ATI Catalyst Suite from Cnet, but I thought I would check in here first.

According to Detailed Specification of 6475-P9U, your laptop does not have ATI GPU, probably something wrong with the ThinkVantage System Update. I am not too sure, you can confirmed it in the Device Manager.
Only some T400 ships with dual display adapters. If your T400 has ATI adapters, you would probably see switchable graphics options in Lenovo Power Manager. The purpose of both integrated and discrete display adapters is to achieve both battery life and performance. When you need more battery life, you could switch to Intel integrated GPU. When you need more performance, you could switch to ATI discrete GPU.

Video playback suddenly black after ATI video driver update?

Totally bizarre - I updated to the latest drivers using RadarSync. Now videos from my flip (mpeg4) all play back as all black, unless I move the "Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshoot/Hardware acceleration" slider to "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3d" or lower.
Anyone else encountered this issue where videos start playing as all black? It seems to be independent of the decoder (xvid or ffmpeg) or video player (Microsoft Video player, VLC) application that I use.

I replaced all the ATI drivers with the ones directly from the website, which down-graded me to the 2007 version of the "ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2" 6.14.10.6547
Works great!

Video Driver Update

My HP G5370uk has Intel HD Graphics driver version 8.15.10.2119. Because the driver is so old, I cannot update to Windows 7 SP1 because there is an interaction with Windows Live Mail. Is there a newer driver available or a workaround that will allow me to update Windows 7?

I'll start at the beginning
I run windows 7 and want to update to IE10 or 11 but there is no option on windows update so I tried to find out why, turns out you have to have SP1 installed first but again there is no option on windows update.
I checked microsoft website and eventually found that because my graphics driver is old it does not support some of the updates to various microsoft products including livemail, but not limited to that, therefore I am not given the option to get SP1 unless/until I upgrade the driver.
I tried several different methods to update the driver but after checking with intel their systems tell me that because the driver is an oem to HP and they have modified it I must get an update from HP only they dont seem to have one available.
Having trawled through several forums I have found 2 other users who have had the same problem, the only way both of them managed to solve it was to install a new graphics card!

Video driver update fails

Envy desktop Win 8 64 bit. I wanty to update my NVIDIA driver, but the installation fails. I've downloaded the file from Nvidia's pages. I downloaded the file the NVIDIA program suggested, so it should be correct. Anyway I downloaded another copy as well, but it didnt work either.
I start the file, the program saves files to a fodler on my disc. Then the system compatability check turns green and I accept the terms. I click next and it tries to install the driver for some time and then fails. "Driver not installed".
I've had the problem before. Then I used the recovery option to reinastall windows. Then the update worked, but I cant keep reeinstalling windows everytime I want a new driver.
What can I do?

While not specific in what I have found in the past, but if HP issues an update, then it is usually means that is designed for that particular equipment and is different from the NVidia driver found on the NVidia site. From the pictures of the card, it would appear to be a true NVidia card but that model also has an i7 processor. The two together may give way to the update.

[SOLVED] Possibly dead hard drive or bad raid setup...

I have a 4 drive raid5 running. Just recently one of the drives kept removing itself from the array. I have re / formated / partitioned the drive multiple times, but either mdadm doesn't accept the drive, or it accepts, resyncs, and when i try to access the raid it fails again.
I eventually pulled the drive out and plugged it into my desktop machine. That machine recognized the partition fine. However after putting the drive back into the raid i receive these sort of errors on startup:

I have tried using SMART to test the drives, however all the drives seem to fail with some sort of error. I believe this is a false positive as I have read elsewhere that the 1TB Green Western Digitals (WD10EARS) seem to have problems with SMART.
Is this drive dead? Its only a year old... and unfortunately just out of warranty.

Ok so i zero filled /dev/sde, and re-added it back to the array. It synced (for 2 days), and then my RAID5 completely failed. I can't bring it back up at all now. My BIOS says one of the hard drives is dead (SMART error). Fair enough drive is dead. But now i cant get the 3 drives back up and running in the RAID.
I have attempted the following:
sudo mdadm --assemble -vv /dev/md127 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1

How to? Video driver update, MacAir 2011. (Cim City video error)

Hi...
Can't play Sim City on my Mac Air mid 2011 OSX 10.7.5 with Intel HD 3000 graphics due to green stripes over the game screen.
Anybody know how to update the driver?
I tried Intel's automatic detection service, but it failed.
Any ideas?
