[SOLVED] Possible to load GDM with startx?

I currently boot into the command line and then
startx
to get into GNOME. Is it possible to load GDM in .xinitrc or by any other means when I load my desktop environment? The reason I ask is because I can't get a lock screen to work unless I enable gdm.service at boot, which I don't want. Thanks.

Actually, if what you want is the ability to lock the screen you don't have to enable gdm.
Just add "gnome-screensaver &" to your .xinitrc (before "exec gnome-session").
The lock screen this way is rather shabby, but better than nothing.

Hi,
I am calling 'Autoinvoice Master Program' for creating transactions in my custom package.
I have 15 lines in my data file. They are invoices, credit memos, debit memos with different batch_source_name.
Import program is picking tranasctions with any one of batch_source_name & update the base table.
15 lines are populated in interface(ra_interface_lines_all) but base table (ra_customer_trx_all) populated with few line.
Is it possible to load transactions & call the AutoInvoice with multiple batch_source_name in one data file ??
Please help me on this issue.

I cannot find a method to achieve this. You may try to create a new contact folder and copy the contacts you want to use to the new contact folder, and then mail merge from the newly created contact folder.

I am planning to buy an Ipad for a special girl's birthday. I want to make a surprise and load it with her pictures and some songs I will choose. Question is: Is that doable? Will I need to create an username and password on iTunes? When she get the gift will she be able to keep the stuff I have added? Has anyone done that before?

So I will need to create a brand new Apple ID with password and give that info to her and tell her to change her password of course and the email address associated with the apple id. Does that make sense?
Problem is: if she already has an Apple ID, then all the stuff will be lost. Is that correct?

Possible bug in GDM with new user

Hi, I created a user in the system settings app in gnome and I set the password to be set at first login, but now logging out of the current user and trying to login to the new user without the password on gdm I just get nothing where 'create new UNIX password' used to be.
So I cant create a password for a new user from GDM in 3.6 like I could in 3.4. It might be a bug?
To get around this you can obviously just run
passwd 'user'

GNOME doesn't work correctly with startx only by GDM

This is driving me nuts, I'm having a bunch of problems because I'm starting my GNOME session using startx instead of GDM and this bugs me a lot because I prefer startx most of the times...
1) One of the problems is that the sound does not work with startx. Starting through GDM, the sound is ok. What's even more frustrating is that sometimes, it doesn't even work through GDM
2) I can't unlock anything in the "System » Administration" menu. All of the "unlock" buttons are grayed out and I can't click them. But it works on GDM. However, whatever setting I change (after unlocking) is not saved...

I've read the wiki but I don't know what should I do to the hal.conf everything seems "normal" to me...

I don't know what I've done (changed lots of things lately and configuration files) but the sound seems to be working now... Not every time, but most of the time, it seems so. I have enabled the button sound (when you click a button) temporarily to see if the sound keeps working for the time being...
Also, the unlock button now is enabled and here's a thing I found about the settings not being saved. I open "Administration » Services", for instance, and click "unlock", input password, enable GDM, which was disabled of course and click "close". I open "Administration » Services" again and with everything disabled, I see that GDM is not checked, still, I click "unlock" again, the services list is unlocked and GDM is still unchecked. But, if I look inside /etc/rc.conf, I can see the gdm daemon was added to the list... If I reboot the computer, GDM will start automatically and if once again I go to "Administration » Services", now I see GDM checked. If I try to uncheck it, it will work, but I will only see the unchecked value in the "Services" window after another reboot. Is this normal?

The "TDMS Open" node does more than open a file handle, it will load meta data (including file/group/channels' properties) and create index structures in ram for fast accessing any raw data in TDMS file. Thus, my advice is:
1) You can save the efforts to write sub-VIs to preload properties of a TDMS file at least, since they are already kept in memory after the file is opened.
2) Since index structures are presented, the performance to read data of any part in a tdms file will not be affected by the file size and the read performance might already satisfy your application. You can have a try.

[SOLVED] no sound with startx

Hi.
I use systemd and xmonad on my arch linux.
When starting xmonad with "startx" command, alsamixer doesn't work in urxvt while it works well under tty.
It seems to be a polkit problem.
My .xinitrc file has only one line:
exec xmonad
How can I make alsamixer work after "startx"?

Actually I didn't find a way to have polkit work with systemd and startx.
When using sysvinit, "exec ck-launch-session xmonad" works well, but "ck-launch-session" reports an error with systemd.
What can replace "ck-launch-session" when using systemd?

[SOLVED] Having a hard time with XMonad

Sup guys,
first post ever in this Forum, but I've already used it a few times...
I'm from Brazil, and I chose Arch Linux to be my initial dive into the Linux world, I assumed this one is one of the best for me to learn about computing. I've already installed and reinstalled it a few times. I tried with KDE and stuff, but now I wanted to step up to a higher level, so I picked XMonad.
I followed several different guides to install it and stuff, I checked some solved problems trying to get it running, but no, it's still not working.
When installing XMonad 0.11 it warned me there were pendencies I had to install, some haskell packages and stuff, I got them all installed and it's now listed in GHC-PKG as xmonad-0.11 and xmonad-contrib-0.11. I got Xorg-server, xorg-xinit and xorg-server-utils all installed. I was going to use SliM Login Manager, but I found myself having trouble to start xmonad even with startx, so I'm focusing in configuring it first. I put into my ~/.xinitrc file the lines: "xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr", "setxkbmap -model abnt2 -model br -layout abnt2" and "exec xmonad", then run "# xmonad --recompile". Finally, when I run startx what happens is that my screen goes black and theres a mouse pointer, that's it, all those XMonad keyboard shortcuts doesn't work, I've tested it with the default template in "/usr/share/xmonad-0.11/man/xmonad.hs" and other downloaded from users in this forum. Nothing ever changes, except from the default template, which gives me error messages referring to 'help' not in Scope, which I believe it's a known bug/error in the file.
I really want to use, try, learn about XMonad, but first I gotta successfully run it at least once, so I can change and see the results while making my own .hs ...
So I'm here asking for a light, all mighty archie wizards.

Ok, so I ran startx with "exec xmonad" with this xmonad.hs config:

Supposely it had to open terminal with WinL + Return or WinL+Shift+Return. But it's not...
EDIT: OH DUDE! I changed urxvt for xterm and it opened! I'm so glad with almost nothing, now I'm gonna check for more keybinds and that wiki a little further... thanks
EDIT2: If I open XMonad and then open xmonad.hs and make some changes, will it automatically update? or do I have to recompile > restart?

Well - as far as I know, that is not possible.
If you try it with just two subpanels and the same vi to place in the subpanel, you once get error 1145 (LabVIEW: Cannot open VI because it is already in a subpanel control.).
One way you could code a similar functionality was the usage of a tab-control. You could place your "views" on 5 tabs, make the tab-registers invisible and access the single tabs using a drop-down.

Hi,
My "problem" is:
1. I have an image called "mediterranean_sea.IMG" (non-standard image format)
2. I need to process it (histogram, palette, etc).
3. I'm wondering if it is possible to load this image an process it using some Java API.
4. I've tried to do this using JAI but I think that this API only works with TIFF, PNG, JPEG, etc.
Any idea?

Is it possible to load a PDF into the ipad Photos app?

I deal with documents that then have to be sent to a specific site that only accepts .doc, .docx, pdf.
I can't e-mail them, because the site must access iPad so that the documents are correctly received and accounted for.
That site can only access the iPad's Photos, nowhere else.
Is it possible to load one of these three formats into the ipad Photos app?

That worked with an existing fragment.

Is it possible to load a request already updated in the data target ?

Hi Experts,
Question: load a request which is already updated in data targets and data mart status is set
Data flow:
source system -
> ODS1 -
> Infocube1
Now, requests are first loaded into ODS1. Then these request are loaded into Infocube1.
Now, i deleted the request in the Infocube1.
Is it possible to reload the request from ODS1 to Infocube1 ?
Please suggest how.

Hi Masthan Kaniganti ,
It is possible to load the data but not same request.
The reason why we can not load the request is in ODS level delta resords are updated ,hence with the selection condition we have to load the present and previous data.
and one more thing...
If you are deleted request in Cube level means, we can reconstuct the same request via reconstruction tab..
