[SOLVED] preserving stable system

Hello guys and girls
If I wanted to keep the Arch stable and not to do any upgrades of crucial system components (like e.g. kernel etc.), which packages should I put into IgnorePkg list? Can you provide me with the list of ALL packages to put there in order to preserve my system stable?
By the way, I'm using Arch i686 and xf86-video-ati package...
Thank you

Thanks to all for their great opinions.
I realized that ignoring some packages is not a good way to make the system stable. Therefore, I found the solution: to use kernel26-lts and for other things, to do updates as frequently as possible but at the same time to read mailing lists about packages as kishd suggested.
And, I wasn't aware of pacman -Sc option as kokoko3k suggested (thanks).
As for the incentives why I started to think about something like this was that for the last 2 weeks, I was having random X restarts and I was not aware of any keyboard combination which would deliberately do that. It was really ANNOYING making some paper for school or doing some other work when (probably) X restarted randomly! My intention was not to make the system super-stable (the main reason why I'm using Arch is rolling release and I'm willing to tolerate minor program bugs), but X restarts were really terrible.
But I realised that I could try lts kernel and till now, no crash (hope it'll stay like this).
Thanks again to everybody for their opinions.

  • Suggestions for new stable system?

So I am looking at getting the MSI Neo2-FIS2R, and have been reading through all the problems people are posting on this forum.
I am not looking at doing any real overclocking just yet (I am fairly sure overclocking my old P2 eventually fried the board), but if things work out right, then maybe I'll look into it in the future.
I was planning the following system:
    MSI Neo2-FIS2R
    Pentium 4 3.0C 800FSB
    1GB PC3200 Kingston mem kit (3-3-3)
Seagate 80GB SATA (plus an old 40GB IDE)
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis
    XP Home
Antec True 380W PSU & case
Should this be a stable system with good performance with this motherboard? Do I really need to go for better memory (Geil 1GB PC3500 kit and Corsair Twinx 3200 kits are options)?
    Thanks.

The numbers used by that program to determine the watts required are valid. You will get similar totals doing the exercise by hand.
I don't know if anyone is making a large power supply that is not switch mode, but in either case efficiency is irrelevant in supplying power to the computer. It wants a certaing number of amps at a certain voltage, which will give you watts. If you need 400W you can use a big old iron power supply with 50% efficiency so that the computer gets 400W and the cooling air gets 400W, or you can get a switch mode supply with 70% efficiency that gives the computer 400W and the cooling air 170W.
In either case the power supply watts rating is at the output, not at the input.
The power supply rocks009 is looking at is marginal for his current configuration. I would expect that he has one or two optical drives not included here, maybe a few USB devices.
This place  shows a price difference between the 380 and 480 of about $31 CDN, and the 550 of $48. CDN $ usually get divided by a big number when converting to another currency so the cost is marginal.
You may be right jaeger66, but I'll put up my electrical engineering degree against yours )

  • SOLVED - BIOS UPDATE "SYSTEM DOES NOT CONTAIN the NECESSARY WMI SUPPORT for this VERSION of HPQflash

If you get infamous error when updating HP Portables (laptops/notebooks/ netbooks) BIOS within Windows:
"SYSTEM DOES NOT CONTAIN THE NECESSARY WMI SUPPORT FOR THIS VERSION OF HPQFLASH":
I am posting a solution found for own business laptop (HP 8540W & 8760W) so WebSearch engines index/register it in a few days - future sufferers come here and get a SOLUTION, finally.  Disreagrd previous "experts" advises, they don't work 100% & pity on TechSupport folks who get HP paychecks yet don't know products their co. designs/manufactures (on deep Technical level):
Below is a SOLUTION (WORKING) !
Go into Services (Run "services.msc" or get there thru ControlPanel-->AdminTools-->), find following 2 services ==> make sure they're running, chances are they're NOT (as in my case I keep them disabled unless need running):
    1) "HP Software Framework"
    2) "HP Service" [no typo - a real plain name]
If not running, set Properties-->Manual and click "Start", make sure both are running.
Rerun BIOS updater, choose option for "Within Windows" or something to that effect (using HPQ/ROMpaq updater), rather than "create USB BootDisk on Key", this time it should work without the hassle of a BootDisk creation.
Should work from within Windows environment.
    Notes:
    a) Likely only one (1) service is responsible - namely "HP Software Framework" for HPQ Updater to fail, but doesn't hurt to reenable/restart both services.
I in fact am responding to other customers who elect to Update BIOS within Windows, perhaps oldfashioned but to me Boot Updater is more natural & always works regardless of WMI Support.
    b) After done, don't forget:
*) Recheck BIOS settings - update may've added new and/or changed old, so rescan tobe sure.
**) Go BACK into Windows-->Services.msc & redisable both aforementioned Services if were originally disabled; or you're a computer Pro, you know what you're doing & like me keep all HP services disabled.  The ones we got on EliteBook 8760W are pests consuming system resources, you just enable "Software Framework" when occasional issues emerge with HP softupdate (typically no issues) & redisable after use, rest of services are bloatware - some attempt to overrun Windows Wireless console, some seekout HP Networked printers (Ethernet, Wireless, but not USB), some do this & that - I study/know which one does what and decided to disable all. This is called a "minimalist" philosophy & turns your machine into a fast beast, I recently sold a very obsolete 4-year laptop which however handles 3DMCAD & complex designs/simulations, better new machines out fo a store, as new machines are loaded w/bloatware chocking down resources.
BUT nobody is requiring you to disable anything though.
The solution merely states the fact:
These 2 (or 1) services when not running halt BIOS Update "within Windows" (you can still run "BootDisk option", however, if preferred).
Simply restartung them solves your problem.  Usually
Ya'll have a good day and enjoy!
    ===========
    BELOW ARE IMPORTANT WARNINGS:
    1) IF YOUR BIOS UPDATE STILL FAILS, SOME OTHER PIECE IN WMI SUPPORT IS MISSING - IN MY CASE WAS THESE 2 SERVICES, BUT THERE'S REMOTE POSSIBILITY SOMETHING ELSE MIGHT BLOCK UPDATER.  DON'T WASTE TIME & CHOOSE "USB/BootDisk" options instead
    2) Once BIOS updater does its job, will ask to auto-restart - let it go on & complete, it will self-shutdown (click "Next" to skip 60-second timer), then do NOT turn it on manually!, wait - it'll turn on by itself in 15 seconds, let it boot into Windows, you're done!
    3) WARNING: close other apps before proceeding, be 100% sure your ACpower won't be interrupted or better yet - make sure battery is in/charged (so if ACpower accidentally disconnects, you're autoswitched onto battery) b/c power loss may result in severe damage to internal hardware.  In the old days it'd result in fatal damage, these days powerloss would still result in a major repair (ROM chip corruption).
So to summarize: those 2 services I specified, are often responsible for whether HPQ/ROMpaq will or won't run.
Other causes possible, but I've not witnessed; and if so - choose BootDisk option.

  • [Solved] Severely broken system after update

I need help with system that doesn't boot after update.
I tried to make pacman -Syu on a system which was not updated since 2010 xmass... probably being overwhelmed by number of issues I did something wrong, but now the system is in a very bad state.
I think that the main issue was glibc update. I followed the instruction to install all other packages before glibc, but every second package was complaining about glibc (although they all updated). Then pacman became broken, but I solved this and finally everything got updated.
Everything looked fine right after update, but now the system is "unable to find root device" on boot.
I tried to boot with recent arch usb stick (cd drive is broken in the computer), but it doesn't boot (reboots right after "loading archiso.img"). I managed to boot with ubuntu usb stick. I chrooted to my arch partition using these instructions:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chroot#Change_root
then, following pacman wiki I reinstalled linux, mkinitcpio and systemd.
It didn't help. The last thing I can think of is to reinstall all packages via chroot. Is there any handy way to do this, taking into account that some packages could have been installed from AUR (I don't care about them at this point, but I wouldn't like this to stop me from reinstalling all other packages)?
    Any other ideas?
Last edited by senjin (2012-09-15 19:34:26)

It's not a solution since arch installation usb stick doesn't work for me, as I mentioned above. I must either make this installation work, or move to ubuntu (gah!)
    edit:
I managed to boot. After the error message at the beginning I'm left with "you can type exit to continue booting, but it will most likely fail"... it doesn't fail, and system appears to be working normally (well, except some error about consolekit when X is starting, probably unrelated).
Now the question is how to avoid this error message at the beginning...

  • Solved\ Random lockups/system freezes AMD 6850 crossfire mode

    Hello all,
I have come to these forums because i have a problem for 4 months now and i cant seem to figure out.
    First my systemspecs:
Asrock X79 extreme 4 slot 2011 (Bios version 2.0 (latest))
    Intel i7 3820
    16 Gig Geil 1600 DDR 3 memory (4 dimms)
2 x MSI R6850 Cyclone Power Edition/OC (crossfire mode with bridge)
    1 x OCZ agility 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD 120GB (System drive)
    2 x Samsung HDD 500GB 7200rpm
    TG600-BZ 600 Watt maxx 24 amps
    Running Windows 7 64bit
    Catalyst 12.6
    12.7 CAP1
    So my problem:
When i have 2 cards inserted in crossfire mode my system goes true random lock ups and freezes. Up to several times a day.
While heavy load and gaming i sometime hear the system hang for a few seconds (sounds hangs system freezez) and then it continues to run.. usually that happens about 5-6 times before the system hangs locks up and does not respond anymore.. (i can hear the sounds hanging) and have to do a reset.
I had a few BSOD's getting the well know ATIKMPAG.sys error but that happen only twice.
Funny thing is that it does not always does this while under heavy load but also while doing YouTube video's.. even had one while cooking dinner.. (computer not in use).
    Seems to be completely random.
So what have i done to fix the problem:
I have done a complete clean install of windows 7 only running basic drivers and hardware.. problem persists
Check system event log on any problems but since it does sudden lockups there are no logs of these hardware events.
Did a check on my power saving options in windows.. made sure all were on performance.
I have run true Catalyst 12.1 to 12.6 and all kinds of cap's.. problem persists
Checked temp, does not come above 70 degrees Celsius.  (case temp not above 30)
Made sure i run the latest BIOS version of my motherboard.
Run a 24 hours memory test with memtest86+ no errors.
Did a heavy load and MSI burn in test on the single cards separately from each other continues to run perfectly.
I have run both cards separately from each other in my system (single card mode) for 2 weeks...(both PCIE slots) system runs like a charm.. no lockups no random freezes.
So i hope anyone can help me, i have some experience troubleshooting computer problems but this one has me baffled.

This is indeed the Tagan piperock 600 watt. Problem is that i have no idea how much amp my cards are pulling from 1 rail.. are they trying to pull it all from 1 rail? or are they getting power from 2 different rails. If my crossfire setup is pulling al his power from 1 rail i still have a problem..
Also i read in the review (my german is rusty but ok, tnx xmad) that when turbo mode is enabled that all rails work as one rail.. so 80 amp is available? Is this even possibly?
My new PSU will arrive today so i will report tomorrow if it has solved the issue or not.
No, as noted in my last reply for your PSU: "48A combined total for +12V rails". Max for any individual 12V rail is 20A. If three of the rails are loaded to total of 48A then the 4th is useless. You can't just add up 20+20+20+20 & come up with 80, it doesn't work that way on PSU although Antec seems to think so.

  • Preserve file system during OS installation

    Hello all,
I would like to know why every time I would like to preserve a file system, I would not be able to allocate all space in the system to be full used? Let's say, in a 8GB hard-disk, I want to preserve a slice 4, which is of size 1GB. After I have allocated all other file systems, there was a remaining of about 5GB space. But when I want to allocate this space to slice 7, let's say /export, the system would return an error msg saying not enough space. I could only used about 2GB out of 5GB free space to allocate the last slice. Why this happen?
    Thank you all in advanced.

Although I have not tried this, it might work.  Can you add your yum repo in the kickstart %post of your RHEL 6 Template?  If it allows you to do a full yum update on the chrooted file system, it would be followed by a reboot before tools are installed.  The template is probably found in /opt/vmware/etc/build/<RHEL 6 TEMPLATE DIR>/<RHEL 6 FILE>.xsl.

  • [kinda solved] All the system is down and I need my files badly!

I'm using gnome and sometimes when the screen goes blank and you need to retype your password to restore it... well, sometimes it was blank for a while (about 5 seconds) so I was just wandering with my cursor for a while as it was like 30 seconds now... my cursor changed into this "you can type here" mode so I just typed my login, clicked enter and then the password and enter again... then it all went into "no move" state so I changed my display with ctrl+alt+F2 and rebooted the system. It didn't open gdm at all, I had just a terminal (now typing from my laptop). So I typed "gdm" but it went like this:
** (gdm-binary:1242: WARNING **: Failed to aquire org.gnome.DisplayManager: Connection ":1.13" is not allowed to own the service "org.gnome.DisplayManager" due to security policies in the configuration file
** (gdm-binary:1242: WARNING **: could not acquire name; bailing out
With sudo it was almost the same but shorter:
    ** (gdm-binary:1242: WARNING **: Failed to aquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
** (gdm-binary:1242: WARNING **: could not acquire name; bailing out
    With "gnome-session" even shorter:
    ** (gnome-session:1256): WARNING **": Cannot open display:
So I thought I sould just reinstall all the gnome but I used -Syyu before that. Effect:
error: failed retrieving file core.db from mirrors.kernel.org : No address record
It failed to synchronize any database!
So if pacman and gnome are down in the same time... what could happen? All the configuration and home files are present on the disk (I guess).
    At boot, it goes:
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.38-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory
And I guess the important part of the story is that I'm ussing barriers=0 with ext4...

litemotiv wrote:It sounds like it's time to chroot and perform a full pacman update from there. If the problem persists, reinstall the kernel. If the problem still persists, reinstall grub.
Well, I did the 1st and it was impossible to do so I did the 2nd and it was still bad (other errors thought) so I did the 1st again and it worked but the system was still not booting (yet other errors thought) so I did the 3rd and it still was bad... so I turned to this proposal:
ewaller wrote:You could also try booting the system any way you can (livecd, usb), mount your root partition somewhere, mount your boot partition somewhere else (not at /boot on the root partition), and copy the files from your root partition's /boot to the boot partition.
but it didn't worked either... now I'm stuck with:
Root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxxxxxxxx' doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: Unable to determinate major/minor number of root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxxxxxx'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
while booting. It's too much for me... ^^'
Edit: 'exit' didn't solve the situation of course.

  • [SOLVED] Pacman leaving system in inconsistent state

Today I made an update to my system and wanted to reboot. Since then I am having issues to no end.
To begin with, I had a custom kernel but it became hard to maintain it so I wanted to drop it in favor of a much newer default kernel. So I removed my kernel with pacman and updated the default one. Then I made sure that all traces of the custom kernel were removed and re-ran mkinitcpio and grub-mkconfig.
Afterwards, I rebooted but gut stuck entering by LUKS passphrase, because it would not accept any input. Here you have to know I was using Plymouth which already fell back to its text-mode (so I assume, the nice lock and GUI were gone). I booted from a CD, chrooted and removed plymouth and its hooks and re-installed the encrypt hook. Upon regenerating the image, it complained libgcrypt.20.so or something was missing. I checked and while pacman -Ql libgcrypt said there should be such a file, there actually wasn't (only in lib32 there was this file, and in lib there was an older version).
So I reinstalled the package and the file was there. Then I wanted to start vim and it complained some libraries were missing. I checked and again same behavior. So reinstalled all packages. This did not help. Again, manual install of those packages. Now I rebooted.
The system started, I could enter my passphrase and was automatically logged in. However, my window manager displayed several errors (among others, ACPI problems) and the screen froze. Reboot, start X as root, screen freezes as well (no WM set up here). I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log and it is empty as is my .xlog which logs the stdout in case of my user.
I then reinstalled my graphics- and input-drivers. I also removed some packages where pacman claimed they were no longer needed (I know, risky). Now I couldn't even log in to a shell, even as root, login just said something about an Incorrect Login oder something?
So I booted from CD again, chrooted and reinstalled those packages I removed. And here comes the major suprise: My stdout gets overwhelmed with "exists in filesystem". It literally took several seconds to run through. So it seems pacman never removed those files properly.
I checked pacman.log, dmesg, journalctl and anything else I could think of but I only found possible symptoms (like VBox not finding modules), no cause.
    Some additional info:
The system is a laptop with an SSD that is encrypted and uses LVM with an ext4 filesystem on all partitions (root, home, usr, var). I know usr is not such a good idea, but I learned that too late...
The installed graphics card is a generic intel card with an additional nVidia card accessible via Optimus (if that's relevant).
I have no idea what could possibly have gone wrong and would love if anyone could provide any suggestion on how to fix it or find the cause of it.
Last note: The initial problem was that it always took multiple seconds to connect to something via network. However I assumed that is because of my outdated kernel but updated libraries that require a newer kernel. Seems I was wrong...
    Regards,
    javex
Last edited by javex (2014-03-17 16:52:54)

Sorry for my late reply. Since the problem had to be fixed fast, I just reinstalled arch. I created a backup and so it was much quicker to reinstall than to unwrap this issue.
Still, concerning the kernel version: It was just some patches to add real multi-threading to luks/dm-crypt.
And during installation, I found that my usr directory had a lot of packages directories (possibly w/ content) even when the actual usr partition was not mounted. I found that I did not have the usr hook in mkinitcpio and must say, I possibly broke it myself by mounting it for my chroot environ. So this may be the cause of the extended issues.
So what likely happened here was that I broke my system by sometimes exeuting pacman with separately mounted /usr and sometimes without. This still doesn't explain the original issue but maybe a simple live CD boot & update/upgrade would have solved that. Thank you all for your responses and your effort and sorry this thread wasn't of much use to anyone.

  • [SOLVED] pacman says system is up to date

    Hello Archers,
I've been using pacman to update this particular system with no problems until recently. It says "there is nothing to do," but I know at least that I have an old kernel (2.6.34.1-1). I've tried changing mirrors three times, refreshed the package lists each time, and cleared the package cache. The /var/lib/pacman/local directory looks OK except for the outdated files. The latest date on those files is August 3, but that was when I installed new packages rather than updated; the rest of the entries are from July.
P.S. I believe pacman is able to sync the repos but not actually update anything.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, you're right. I can't believe that many U.S. mirrors are out of date without mention on the front page or in the forums (or did I miss it?). I was able to update as usual on another Arch system, however, which probably defaulted to one of the few good mirrors.
Anyone know when the situation will be resolved?

  • [SOLVED][KDE4]Only system sounds will play

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the DE section, so please move it if you see fit.
I'm having a bit of a tricky issue with KDE, all the system sounds will play, but nothing else. I'm currently using the gstreamer phonon backend with ALSA. I've seen some forum posts from the gentoo wiki with similar problems but it seems it was just a mixed mess of deleting .folders and other configuration files. I've also tried to use the VLC phonon backend but to no avail either. I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and has a coherent solution.
So far I've tested playing audio files in VLC and videos on youtube. My alsa device is fully configured and will play audio, just not output from programs that are not part of the plasma environment. I have also looked to the wiki for a solution but it only seems like it has solutions for audio conflict problems, which is all sorted out for me.

i recently had a gstreamer issue that i solved today as well.  run a pacman -Ss gstreamer0.10 to see which packages you have installed.  you might need to install the gstreamer0.10-plugins group of packages, as i did.
this might be completely different from what i went through, since i'm not using phonon or kde, but it's worth a shot.  worst case scenario is you uninstall the extra packages afterwards.
another option to try (which didn't help me, but was a solution for SOMEONE i found through my searches) was to compile and reinstall a fresh version of the gstreamer0.10 package.  abs makes it so simple to do, it's also worth trying.

    Some information :

  • [SOLVED] Configure The System (Beginners Guide) Question

    Hello!
I'm currently working my way through the beginners guide, from the wiki.  All going ok so far and I've reached the Configure The System section. Which is where I'm a bit stuck.
Beginners Guide wrote:You will be presented with a menu including the most important configuration files for your system. If you want to look up the available options as stated in /etc/rc.conf just press Alt+F2 to get a shell, look it up, and switch back to the installer with Alt+F1.
The problem I have is looking up the available options. For example, to find my locale it states I should run locale -a, however when I hit Alt+f2 and enter the command at the bash shell ([Arch Linux: /]# ) I get the following error
    -bash: locale: command not found
When I attempt to lookup other items I'm also unable to find those (such as timezone in /usr/share/zoneinfo).
Can anyone let me know what I'm doing wrong, I'm missing something very obvious here, but sadly I just can't work it out!

  • [SOLVED] Ring file-system for a surveillance server?

In my home, I have a (almost) dedicated (Arch-32) computer to use as a surveillance server. It continuously fetches video from a IP camera using motion and saving various GB of images and videos. Obviously, I have to manually delete older videos when the disk is getting full, but it would be better to have some kind of file-system that overrides the older files with the newer ones when it gets full.
Is there anything like that? Any recommendations?
    Thanks!
PS: If your suggestion/solution could only delete videos (not images), better.

Gracias! I didn't know about find's cmin, it is a great option. Exec gave me some problems so I ended up using more than one command. This is the script actually:
    find /home/user/videos -cmin +4320 > temp
    rm `cat temp | grep avi`
    rm temp
The only thing bad about it, is that when find doesn't produce any output, rm shows a error message because there are no arguments. I know that's not the best way, but it works.

  • [SOLVED] Both stable and unstable chromium-pepper-flash won't install

    Hi all,
I just installed Chromium, but am unable to install Flash. It was recommended that I install pepper-flash rather than flashplugin, since the latter is deprecated. But there is a problem:
chromium-pepper-flash-stable won't install because the link to the package is invalid:
    ERROR: Failure while downloading google-chrome-stable-31.0.1650.57-1.x86_64.rpm
chromium-pepper-flash won't install because the md5 checksum is invalid:
==> Validating source files with md5sums...
    google-chrome-unstable_current_amd64.deb ... FAILED
    LICENSE.txt ... Passed
==> ERROR: One or more files did not pass the validity check!
This leaves me with three questions:
Does this happen often, or is it a freak coincidence that both recommended Flash packages are broken on the first day I start using Arch?
I can probably find the proper package file for chromium-pepper-flash-stable, but what is recommended practice for installing it (if I am in a hurry, or just impatient)? Should I hack the PKGBUILD file myself?
Should I flag these packages as out-of-date in AUR?
    Thanks!

Yes, edit the PKGBUILD yourself. Both the link and the checksum.
Have a look at the comments: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/chro … mments=all Being broken is not an uncommon occurrence for this package.

  • [SOLVED] Starting Full System Upgrade... There Is Nothing To Do

"Starting Full System Upgrade... There Is Nothing To Do" is the only message I have ever seen when using pacman -Syu.  I have no problem installing files but pacman cannot seem to EVER find updates to anything.  Even when I know that a package has been updated in the repositories, pacman never acknowledges it.  Some examples of applications are:
    Python2 - Installed - 2.6.5-3, Available - 2.7.1-4
    Geany - Installed 0.19-1, Available - 0.20-1
    Pacman - Installed 3.4.0-2, Available - 3.4.2-1
Even if I try to specify the repository, for Geany for instance, "pacman -S community/geany", it still sees it as up-to-date.
It's quite possible that I'm going about something the wrong way but I don't ever recall the system actually finding updates (since June).  My pacman.conf looks as follows:
MOD EDIT -- Please use code tags to display any output and of files -- Inxsible
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also try to read the wiki about pacman and mirrorlist. Simply uncommenting multiple mirrors does not give you the ability to get packages from all of them. pacman will connect to each one in order. If it can connect to the first one and see that pacman is available it does not connect to the next mirror to see if some other mirror has an updated version of not.
It connects to the next mirror if and only if a certain package is not available on the first mirror or the mirror itself is down.
