[SOLVED]Presonus Audiobox USB - pops and crackles on sound output

I've tried the suggestions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … SB_devices and http://askubuntu.com/a/206233 but it has made no difference at all.
It happens fairly consistently, probably there are a few pops or crackles every 10 seconds or so. I'm using Pulseaudio and Gnome Shell. The unit works fine on any other OS. I also used a Behringer USB card for a while before buying this one, and the Behringer worked fine.
Any one have a suggestion for a fix?
EDIT: For some reason there is an option in Pulseaudio to select "Digital Output (S/PDIF) - Audiobox USB", even though there isn't an SPDIF output on the unit. If you select this the audio continues working through the main outputs, and since I did this the pops and crackles seem to have gone.

I think I figured it out. I found a firmware update for my audio interface (REM - Babyface) and so far so good.
I'll post again if it comes back.
Thanks.

  • Audio pops and crackles on MacBook Pro

    Help!!!
I have a Late 2011 15' MacBook Pro, 256gb SSD, 750gb (7200) and 16gb RAM. When listening back to music after about 30 seconds to a minute the sound starts to randomly pop and crackle. I've go to find a fix for this.
I am running 10.8.4. I have already reinstalled Mountain Lion, reset the SMC and reset the PRAM. Nothing seems to work.
It doesn't seem to be a hard drive issue as it happens on any hard drive I'm playing from.
I haven't heard it using the onboard speakers. I've only heard it so far with my external speakers connected through USB. This makes me think it could be a USB problem.
Does anybody have any other suggestions? I'm going mad!!
    Thanks!

  • T410 - high DPC latency in ACPI.sys on BIOS update (leads to audio pops and crackles)

I recently updated my Thinkpad T410's BIOS because the fan wasn't working properly. The fan is working fine now, but ever since the BIOS update I've been experiencing severe audio pops and crackles. I used the tool LatencyMon to inspect, and the chief culprit seems to be ACPI.sys, with execution times as long as 10ms.
I've tried disabling all the power management options in the BIOS and changing everything to max performance. I've also tried disabling other various devices such as the network adapters, but nothing seems to help. Any idea?

    Hi agrilledfish,
    Is your BIOS 3.03?
I found a post on MixVibes regarding audio drops:

You can try to disable ACPI.sys in device manager or uninstall and reinstall the software.

  • Help with PreSonus AudioBox USB?

    Hi there!
I am a very new MacBoo Pro user (Got my first Mac this week). I originally purchased this computer because, a, it has been the computer that I have wanted forever, and b, I want to do music editing and processing.
I recently purchased the Rode NT1-A Mic,along with studio headphones and sound panels of course, and the PreSonus AudioBox USB Limited Edition. I have been researching extensively about these products and have run into a major issue. Always a flip-side, right?!
So whats going on is that this device (its connected via USB) is not being recognized by my mac. I am up to date on all of my software updates for the computer. It came with a software by PreSonus ("Studio One 2 Artist Music creation and Production System") which due to the Mac not having a disk drive, and due to my research online, it is not necessary to use that software, and I can just plug the AudioBox into my computer, select the audio output, and get started with Garage Band/Logic Pro X. When I go into my system preferances and select sound and search for the audio device, and nothing comes up. My mac is not seeing/recognizing the device. As I said before I have done very extensive research trying to resolve this problem, but I cannot find anything directed towards my situation here.
Thank You so much for any support you can give me regarding this issue.

  • Linking a new DAC to my iMac causes lots of pops and crackles

I've just bought and installed an Arcam rDAC and rWave to improve the quality of the music files I play through iTunes. Connection is via wireless USB.
Whilst the quality of the music has improved, it is now accompanied by a whole series of pops and crackles, making it unlistenable.
I initially raised this with Arcam, who tell me there is a known problem with iMacs that they and other DAC manufacturers have encountered and they currently don't know of any fixes. I'm planning to test whether my son's MacBook Air exhibits the same problems to see if I can eliminate the DAC as a problem.
Can anyone throw any light on this for a largely naive technophobe (i.e. no answers involving complex IT procedures please). What is causing this and is there anything you can suggest that will improve matters? Computer is 2.16 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo using OSX 10.6.8.

    Definitely get 16G of RAM
You may also want to consider getting the 3.1GHz quad i7 processor instead of the i5
That guy at the store didn't know what running  Logic and (large) 3rd party sample libraries means. CCTM does, and he's right. Get at least 16 GB, and the 3.1 GHz i7 (if you can).

  • Pops and crackles when using EAX in F.E.A.R.

    Here is my system:
    Windows 7 64-bit
    intel i7 930
    ASUS P6T:SE Mobo
    2x Nvidia GTX 470 SLI
    12GB DDR2 RAM
    1TB 7200 RPM HDD
Creative X-Fi Titanium and the latest non-beta drivers
-I also have the Windows PID patch and the SLI patch
I recently discovered Alchemy and how it would enable EAX effects (though I'm still not exactly sure if EAX is responsible for the 3D positioning or if it's just some fancy processing to make sound effects sound cooler).
That said, I noticed that after enabling Alchemy and EAX effects, F.E.A.R. started to make popping and crackling noises. But, these noises wouldn't start immediately. It would take a couple minutes before I started hearing them, and it would get progressively worse and worse. Eventually, the game itself would start stuttering and it became impossible to play because of the choppiness.
I have never really experienced this with another game, and only noticed this behavior after enabling EAX effects. I have played F.E.A.R. before with no problems, granted, this was without EAX effects enabled.
Furthermore, I have no idea what needs to be enabled. In the F.E.A.R. sound menu, I have these options:
    Hardware Mixing
    EAX 2.0
    Advanced EAX HD
I can turn any combination of those on or off, and I'm not really sure which ones I should have on and off. Turning on Hardware Mixing and Advanced EAX HD seems to have the best results, but then the sound starts jacking up after playing for a few minutes and eventually, the actual gameplay itself will start becoming choppy, making it impossible to continue playing. It even becomes hard to navigate the menus because the cursor is affected by the choppiness as well.
And the popping and crackling even continues after I exit the game, even in Windows, but to a lesser extent. And it seems to quit completely after a few minutes. Very strange.
Also, I tried disabling SLI and it did not seem to make a difference.
What is going on here? I just want to play this game with 5.1 surround sound and, preferably, EAX, because I do like the way it sounds. It's just that I can't play with EAX because it starts jacking up after awhile.
Edit: It seems that turning on "Hardware Mixing" enables discrete 5.1 channels. Without Hardware Mixing on, I only get stereo output from F.E.A.R. Is this correct behavior? I'm testing further to see if the popping and crackling occurs when Hardware Mixing is enabled (but not any of the EAX settings). I'll report back when I know.
Edit #2: After several minutes of playing with only Hardware Mixing enabled (and no EAX), no popping or crackling occurred. I will continue to test different combinations.
Edit #3: After more testing, it seems that I can use Hardware Mixing (which enables discrete 5.1 channels) and Advanced EAX HD together, which sounds absolutely fantastic. I believe that the problem is caused when I enable EAX 2.0 -- even if I immediately disable it, it seems like it actually starts causing a problem. So what I did was completely restart the game (and my computer) and ONLY enable Hardware Mixing and Advanced EAX HD making sure not to touch EAX 2.0 at all, leaving it disabled.
I've been playing for about an hour with no pops or crackles at all, let's hope it stays that way!
tl;dr - Turning on EAX 2.0 and Advanced EAX HD at the same time can cause undesirable results even if you turn off EAX 2.0. Restart the game (and perhaps your computer) to make sure that when you start the game, EAX 2.0 is completely disabled and ONLY enable HW Mixing and Advanced EAX HD.
Edit #4: Sadly, I am still noticing some intermittent popping, but after playing for awhile it never gets extremely bad. It is much less severe than earlier. Not sure where to go from here.

Just for curiosity I didn't install ALchemy straight away. As I suspected, none of the advanced sound mode options were enabled, which means they've just got an overly complicated menu. It could have just as easily been one option called "Audio Processing" with "Hardware", "EAX 2.0" and "EAX Advanced HD" as the available options - no need for a "Software" setting since it would be disabled without any of those, and the others could be en-/dis-abled based on your hardware capabilities. Oh well - chalk that one up to poor menu design.
When I did install ALchemy, however, I just used the default settings - 4 buffers at 25 duration - and turned on all three options in-game. I played through until the first checkpoint in the 3rd "level" (after the third loading screen w/briefing) and didn't notice anything unwanted with the sound. It appears that I'm using ALchemy 1.43.21, going by the installation files properties, but in all honesty I'm just using what came with the latest Recon3D drivers.
The nearest equivalent I can find for the X-Fi Titanium is a beta 1.43.06, but I might be able to find a way to upload the Recon3D one somewhere if you want to see if it works and fixes the problem. Alternatively, they can be extracted from the driver suite for the Recon3D easy enough. I use 7-Zip to do it, but other archive programs can probably do it as well. Look in the Audio\extras\Audio\ALchemy directory.
It's a shame the protagonist in FEAR keeps wigging out. It's actually a pretty darned good shooter when it's not trying to warp your brain - but at least there's no baby crying like when Max Payne goes nuts.
I just noticed that I get popping, crackling, and eventually game-freezing in Left 4 Dead 2, as well.
I used Alchemy to enable EAX for Left 4 Dead to (I read in the FAQ on Creative's Alchemy page that you could enable it for source engine games), and while playing, I starting hearing pops and stuff just like as in F.E.A.R. Eventually, the game started lagging as well (like in F.E.A.R.), and I had to quit out. It even persisted in windows for a bit as I would notice it when changing the volume and hearing the little "ding" with a pop or crackle in it. I restarted my computer.
I wonder if perhaps the problem isn't Alchemy, but if my sound card is overheating? But that seems a bit far-fetched. I do have two gpus which produce a lot of heat, but both of them stay within safe temperatures (though they do get close at times). In fact, one of them is even water-cooled, and it stays very cool.
It just seems especially strange that, although diminished, the pops and crackles continue even when I quit to my desktop. I don't hear them unless a sound is playing, though. And even then, it is quite diminished from they way it was during the game.
Also, how do I check my version of Alchemy? Could I not use the software update to get the latest version?
Edit: I just tried the software update. It said that my version of Alchemy is 1.41.02, and that I have the latest version installed.
Do different versions of Alchemy exist for different Creative cards? For example, perhaps 1.41.02 IS the most recent version for my x-fi titanium, but not for your recon3D.. Or can I use any version of Alchemy? Maybe getting the most recent version would fix my problems.
Edit #2: I found version 1.43.06 of Alchemy. I went to the x-fi titanium's page on Creative's site and clicked on "beta application", and it was there. Downloading/installing now and testing.
Edit #3: Version 1.43.06 of Alchemy does not seem to work. I do not get any EAX effects in F.E.A.R. at all, no matter which combination of options are enabled.
Also, as a side note, does "EAX Effects" need to be enabled in the audio control panel? I've tried it both ways, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

  • FAQ: Tips/Fixs for clicks, pops and glitches in sound ca

I have come across this little article from the internet while surfing and thought it could be of some use posting it here. Follow the link below.
Tips/Fixs for clicks, pops and glitches in sound card
If after following the tips on this page you are still having troubles, then contact support or wait for other peers in the forum for further advise and suggestion.
This particular phrase that's quoted from the article which is very true.
"This is a HUGE topic and I have come across it many times. The hardest thing to do in tech support is to explain to someone that the fault is not to do with the audio card, but instead with the way the computer is setup or the fault of components in their system. Pcs are built to a budget and parts do suffer because of this."

I know this stuff is 3 months old but I just got mine and hadn't yet used the pin function so now I know.
I hope you are right Nancy that it will have updates, but I really doubt it. This is the norm for Microsoft when stuff they put out bombs. Dish Network had a DVR receiver many years ago that had Microsoft software installed and it was buggy to say the least. They updated it a few times but then abandon it. For a few years Microsoft wouldn't release the code to Dish Network to allow DN to fix the bugs. It was a real "Hate Microsoft" time for those users. DN had to put out their own coded DVR receivers and let the Microsoft ones die.
I think VZ made a deal with MS and removed the stuff MS wasn't supporting. Then VZ put them out without needing a data package to unload them.

  • I recently purchase a PreSonus Audiobox USB to connect to my iMac. It stated that its a class-compliant Core Audio device, no installation of drivers is neccessary on a Mac computer, simply connect it and begin using. However, my iMac isn't recognizing it

I understand Apple is not responsible for hardware from other manufacturer, However, the problem is not with the hardware Audiobox USB because I was able to hook it up to a Windows 8 computer and it worked like it was suppose to. The iMac is not recoginizing the USB for some unknown reason and i don't know if its the  Maverick operating system. If there is someone who can help me resolve this issue please reply.

Try going to Applications > System Preferences > Sound and see if the Audiobox shows up as an option you can pick for input and/or output.
You may also have to check Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI setup and see if it is there as an option to select.
If you are using the Audiobox with an audio app, for example GarageBand or Logic, you may have to check the preferences for the app and select the Audiobox as an input and/or output device
If you have installed software to go along with the Audiobox, try uninstalling it and then rechecking the settings above. I have a USB audio interface (from another manufacturer), and the manufacturer, bless their little pointy heads, can't seem to make a driver that will work. The solution, after trying driver after driver that the manufacturer was emailing me, was to remove them all. And then it worked fine.
On the other hand, there might be an updated driver for Mavericks from the Audiobox people. One that will work. Check their website.

  • 0404USB Pops and Crackles

I have just purchased the 0404 USB audio interface in hopes that it would solve problems I was having with the audio for Proteus X and M Audio Key Rig. So far no luck. My computer is a Gateway 7330GZ laptop running a Pentium 4 at around 3ghz with 512mb of memory. All of the system details exceed the specs for both the 0404 USB Audio Interface and Key Rig. Yet no luck in getting Key Rig to actually produce decent sound for any length of time. Too many crackles, pops and eventually almost straight pink noise. If used with ASIO4All key rig crashes after running for a few minutes. I am sure I could use some additional RAM but do not want to keep buying things under the hopes that one of them eventually will solve my problem. The "onboard" audio on my laptop uses a Conexant Audio driver. I can get Proteus to sound OK but the latency is unacceptable.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers.
The 0404 is connected directly to the computer's USB port and reports USB 2.0 as its speed.
I have installed the production tools bundle of software.
Sonar's playback of audio on one of the sample projects works great.
Have adjusted latency all over the place and have not been successful with M Audio Key Rig. I can get Proteus X to work with significant latency but then I cannot play it properly because the delay is too great.
I have mostly used 44K and 48K sample rates, but I have tried all of the sample rates and latencies available.
I have stopped all unnecessary services, used msconfig to run only a limited array of drivers and programs, disabled the driver for the onboard audio card, and I have then used msconfig to load everything. Nothing solves this problem. I have uninstalled ASIO 4 ALL and ASIO2KS which are other ASIO drivers that I had previously downloaded and used. I have downloaded an ASIO test signal and it has the same problems which is that when a sine wave or a sweep is selected it crackles and pops. You can hear the sine wave frequency and/or the sweep but not without random crackles and pops. I used DPC latency checker and disabled almost everything in Device Manager, one item at a time and latency checker would never render a good report if anything was using the ASIO driver. I could run programs like Microsoft Excel, that do not use ASIO and latency checker would render a good report. But the minute I started a program that used ASIO latency checker would turn its green bars to yellow and red indicating that the system would not playback audio well.
I can play back non ASIO audio just fine. Unfortunately I only have a few days before my return period expires and if I cannot resolve this in the next few days I will have to return the product.
    Thanks for the help.

  • MuVo TX popping and crackli

I've been pretty pleased with my MuVo TX so far, the interface in particular, although the buttons are a bit creaky. I've got a more annoying problem which is occasional popping or cracking during playback of tracks. It'll tend to come at random, at most two or three a track, sometimes only one in fifteen minutes' play, and aren't part of the original file (they don't appear if I rewind and replay the section of the track on the MuVo, as well).
There are also small noises (like whirrs or whines) when the player starts up or switches off, or skips between tracks, and crackles if I'm changing the volume or adjusting the equaliser during playback, but these are obviously less problematic because they're consistent.
I'm going to give the player a while and see if it's annoying enough to make me contact customer services themselves (although I'm pretty picky about sound, so it probably will be annoying enough), but I thought I'd ask if anyone with the same player's had the same sort of problem.
Tom's Hardware Guide's review did mention that they'd had no crackling or popping, so I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with the player's design combined with some oddity of the tracks I'm playing, or I've simply got a slightly duff one. I play MP3s almost exclusi'vely, 28 to 92 kbps generally, and I just stuff a bunch of files on the root directory. Firmware's been updated, BTW, to .0.05.Message Edited by Sockatume on 06-8-2005 06:30 AM

Hmmm, as far as I know the SE is just a repackaged version of the MuVo TX, so it should work.
