[SOLVED] Problem with second SATA drive

My laptop has two hard drive bays, and just recently I added a second SATA drive (moved it from my old laptop) to the extra bay.
Now, anytime the second hard drive /dev/sdb has any heavy disk activity, it appears to cause a shutdown of the SATA port for the first drive (/dev/sda)!  Though the second drive is still fine, and I can still write to it until the system crashes from the root drive (on /dev/sda) being shutdown.
If I don't mount and use the second drive, the first drive works just fine, and I can pound it with traffic without issue.
I can reproduce this problem by copying large amounts of data to drive 2.
This is when I get in my dmesg when the first SATA drive shuts down:

I have experimented, and found that if I turn off NCQ on the kernel command line in my bootloader (libata.force=noncq), that it takes longer before the problem occurs.  Though, if I write enough to the second drive, it does still happen after a while, just greatly reduced its chances of happening.
Is it possible that the old drive (sdb) is causing the problem?  I noticed that it is much noisier than I remember when the drive head moves around.
Another curiosity while I was trying to duplicate the problem:
  - I start a large file copy from sda -> sdb
  - At the same time in another terminal, I do "find / -print"
  - When I hear the drive 2 head moving, it pauses the output of the "find" command.
Every time I hear the head move, I see the find output pause.  Its almost like the drive seek on drive 2 causes the whole Sata controller to pause while the head moves.  Very odd!
Anyone have any ideas?   I think the next thing I will try is borrow a drive from another machine, and do the big write to it to see if I get the same results.
If it is of any help, here is some more info on the laptop:

It appears my drive one really is failing.  It was the first drive and not the second making the loud head seek sound.  I borrowed another drive from a friend, and copied my drive one to it.   No problems with the new drive in place.

  • Boot problems with multiple SATA drives

I have a PC that I built using a P6N Platinum mobo. I have used it without problems for two years. About 6 months ago I installed a 1Tb SATA drive to act as backup to the original 500Gb SATA drive, and have used it w/o problems until this weekend. I also have 2 SATA DVD drives in the machine. The other day, I had a system freeze that forced me to power down. This resulted in an inability to start Windows. After much work, I have everything up and running thanks to chkdsk. However, I have the strangest problem still. If I keep the second backup HDD connected, I can only boot up in safe mode. Once in safe mode, I can read and write to both HDDs as before. However, if I try to start up in normal mode, BIOS seems to keep putting the backup HDD as the primary boot drive. This hangs the machine! If I disconnect the backup drive, the system boots up fine. Once Windows is running (XP pro) I can reconnect the backup drive, it is seen by the OS, and I can read and write files without problems; I just can't boot up when the second drive is connected.
I tried some BIOS troubleshooting. I have set the BIOS to use the 500G drive as the primary boot drive, with the 1Tb drive as second or third in boot order. It still won't start Windows. I also set the boot order to omit the 1Tb drive altogether, also with no success. Likewise, I also toggled the "Boot from other device" option, again with no success. The only thing that I noticed was that the boot sector protection was set to disabled. I have not yet tried to enable boot sector protection. The thought of a virus infection comes to mind, but I have been rigorous in using AV software and scans.
Any advice from board members would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Gosh... I must be mixing bags of beans. Not master slave, it is ACHI enabled selection in BIOS.

  • Problems with second hard drive

I bought my PowerMac G5 new in 2005 and about two years after I got it, I installed a second internal hard drive. I didn't have any problems with the drive until about six months ago (which was when I moved, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it). Around that point, I started hearing a single, loud click followed by a slight winding down noise. Then, my computer would almost completely freeze. After a few moments, I would hear a bunch of soft clicks and my computer would go back to normal. I figured that it was a problem with one of the hard drives, but I wasn't sure what to do.
Later on, the problem got more severe, lasting more like 30 seconds. When my second drive unmounted during one of these episodes, I shut my computer down, opened the case, took both plugs out of the second hard drive, put them back in, and started up my computer again. After that, my computer was running great again. But, a few weeks later, the symptoms started up again.
So, I've gone through the same cable un-plug and re-plug process whenever the drive unmounts. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't seem to help at all. Altogether, I think that the second drive has unmounted about five or six times. I haven't had this problem at all with the original hard drive and I haven't noticed any other problems with my computer. (Well, okay, there's the rare occasion when, instead of going to sleep, it turns the screen black and puts the fans on full blast.)
Could the drive itself be going bad and it has nothing to do with the cables? I have a utility installed that always monitors the SMART status and it hasn't reported any problems. Are there any other troubleshooting steps I should take? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Before I bought DiskWarrior, I thought I'd try some troubleshooting with the software I have on hand. But while I was doing that, the problem got worse. Now, I'm having major problems just getting the computer to boot. I'll give you the rundown on what's happened. It goes through a few boneheaded twists and turns and goes on at great length, but I thought I'd relate it all in the hopes that someone can see a likely pattern.
My first thought was the Apple hardware test, which I had thought was on the Mac OS 10.5 install DVD. So naturally, I didn't see the hardware test listed under Utilities. But while I had it up, I used Disk Utility to do repairs on both hard drives (checking both the disk and permissions). It found no problems on the 2nd hard drive, but found a few errors with "leaves" on the booting drive. It also found a bunch of issues with the permissions, but I don't think it was anything out of the ordinary.
Just for the heck of it, I asked it to run the repairs again. Not long into that, I got what I think is a kernel panic (overlaid message saying I needed to restart my computer in a few languages). It also sped up the fans.
I pushed the power button to shut it down, then started it up again. I heard the startup chime, then nothing but a black screen and the ol' hyperactive fans. I went through that several times before I was finally able to boot from the DVD again. Then, I changed the startup disk back to my usual boot volume and restarted. I had to go through the black screen and insane fans several more times before I could boot normally.
Next, I thought I'd try OnyX to see what it could do. Which might not be much, but I had it repair the disks again and also had it run the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance scripts.
I checked into the black screen & hyperactive fans booting problem elsewhere in the forums, and saw that it was recommended to run the Apple hardware test and also found the correct procedure for doing so, which was to insert the PowerMac G5 install disc (not the Mac OS X upgrade DVD) and press Option when booting. I loaded the disc, restarted, and held down the Option key, but before I could get anything to actually load, I had several more sessions with the black screen of fans.
Regarding that boot problem, I've sometimes seen the red light inside the case turn on almost immediately after I turn on the computer. Other times, it will not light up by itself. But, when I hold the power button in to shut it down, the red light briefly turns on before the unit shuts down. I've also noticed that the light on the Caps Lock button is coming on and staying on when I'm trying to start the computer.
So, after several tries, I checked my G5 User's Guide and it said to disconnect any external devices before trying the hardware test. I had a USB thumb drive plugged in and a FireWire drive hooked up for Time Machine backups, so I took both of them out. Once again, I tried starting up with Option held down and this time, it worked. The fans started running at full blast after I selected the hardware test, which I hoped was normal. So, I asked it to run the extended test and it found no problems. I restarted my computer without reconnecting anything and, at least for now, it's working normally.
    Any new thoughts?

  • [SOLVED] Problem with external USB drive started yesterday

My system freezes for about 65 seconds at the login screen. After 65 seconds, I can login and everything is normal afterwards.
I discovered that I can eliminate the freeze by disconnecting the external USB drive from the PC. Here are the error messages from kernel.log when the drive is connected:
    Oct 15 23:10:14 localhost kernel: [ 17.035091] usb 1-1.3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
    Oct 15 23:10:29 localhost kernel: [ 32.155955] usb 1-1.3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
Oct 15 23:10:29 localhost kernel: [ 32.325394] usb 1-1.3: new high speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd
Oct 15 23:10:31 localhost kernel: [ 34.045126] MediaState is connected
There is supposed to be a kernel boot option (irqpoll) to prevent this from occurring. However, that option seems to no longer work for kernels after 2.6.39. If I try using it with Arch, the system will not boot, saying all the CPU's failed.
I also don't understand why this just started happening yesterday, as the USB drive has been connected to the PC longer than I've been using Arch. Also, my kernel has not been updated since I installed Arch on Oct 8.
Does anyone know another fix or workaround for this problem?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Problem solved
I feel stupid, but I also feel better. I turned off the PC, disconnected the power from the USB drive for about 15 seconds, reconnected the power, rebooted, removed the irqpoll kernel option, and Ubuntu started, perfectly. I need to learn that the USB drive just goes freaky sometimes and remember to do this. But, this is only the second time I've had to do this in months of use.

  • HP Pavilion P7-1141 Computer won't boot with 2nd SATA drive installed

I'm having a problem booting brand new computer when a second SATA hard drive ws installed into P7-1141
Took a working SATA drive from my other computer and installed it into this new computer.  But computer only hangs on startup screen after the animated logo draws...then sits there doing nothing..
    My configuration:
HD 1 (boot drive, original that came with computer) plugged into SATA1
HD2 (second SATA drive) plugged into SATA2
DVD drive (original) plugged into SATA3
Will boot if I unplug SATA cable, but won't if it's plugged in..
To make sure I didn't break anything, I put the SATA drive back into original computer with the same power cable and SATA cable and it works.  That is, it shows up as a second hard drive on my old computer.
    Any ideas?

    Product number is : QX351AA3ABA
    HP Pavilion
    Model # P7-1141
Ok.  I've done a little research and right or wrong, I'm following a suggestion to re-format the drive before I attach it.  Reason:  Someone posted that if you had a Windows XP or Vista formatted HD, that it will need to be re-formatted before being installed into a Windows 7 OS.  Maybe right, maybe wrong...but I'm going to try anyways.  Will keep posted.
Also, looked at my Event Log Errors and found this in the entry:
The device, \Device\Harddisk6\DR6, is not ready for access yet.
Not sure what this means yet..but working on it.  If anyone knows off-hand, i would like to solve this.
Anyways, I'm re-formatting the disk now and will try it again.  I have my doubts, because why wouldn't an NTFS formatted drive show up with any operating system?  Maybe there's an obvious answer, but that's why I'm here!
    Other comments:
I checked for latest SATA driver and must have it..at least according to this HP site since it only lists the 'original', so I assume it's there's only one released for this MB and that I must have the  latest and greatest.
There are many other posts on Windows 7 hanging on "Starting Windows'..and the above is what I pulled from them...haven't found 'the' solution posted yet....
    Thanks!

  • Trying to setup RAID 1 with new SATA drives on xserve 2009 model

Trying to setup RAID 1 with new SATA drives on xserve 2009 model
I have an Xserve rack mount model Xserve 2.26 Quad Core (EMC# 2279) with an Apple RAID card, 24GB RAM (running 10.9 Server software)
Purchased two Western Digital 1TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64MB Cache Black WD1003FZEX drives
It came with three 160GB SATA drives.  I'm leaving one of the original 160GB drives for the OS, but I want to replace the 2 other drives and set it up with RAID 1 (mirrored). I bought 2 brand new Western Digital 1TB SATA drives and formatted them on another Mac through Disk Utility with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting.  I then placed the new drives in the Xserve and booted it up.  After I login it immediately gives me 2 error windows saying...
    "Apple RAID Card
The Apple RAID Card installed in your system requires your attention."
It has two buttons underneath this message allowing me to either select 'Ignore' or 'Open RAID Utility'
I've tried to RAID the drives the Disk Utility and through the RAID Utility with no success.
I have both drives mounted on the desktop, as separate drives, but I really need to set these up as a RAID 1.
I've been reading other forums, where others have been able to get this to work by using a jumper on certain pins (5 & 6)of the drive to back down the transfer rate to 1.5 Gb per second.  I tried that and it didn't work for me. Maybe I used the wrong pins -- I just don't know.  I'm also wondering if there is some Apple firmware that is required on these drives?  I'm asking for help from anyone who has gone through this same issue.  Thanks in advance.

UPDATE --  I had an issue with the RAID card battery, it was dead and I have since replaced it.  But I am still unable to setup the RAID 1 drive configuration.  Does anyone know if it has something to do with the faster transfer rates on these new drives.  Maybe they need to be clocked down with certain jumper settings on these Western Digital drives?  Or am I fighting a losing battle because these drives don't have Apple firmware?  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Mac Pro Early 2008 problems with firewire 400 drives

I am having some sporadic problems with firewire 400 drives and am trying to figure out my best options going forward. System 10.5.2 has hung on me twice in the first week of use, and each time I noticed from console there were some problems accessing one or more of these drives (even though I wasn't doing any reads/writes to/from them). Just before one of the crashes, Disk Utility also had problems "seeing" these drives. My external firewire drives are:
    Maxtor OneTouch III 750GB
    Acomdata enclosure/Seagate 400GB
    LaCie d2/160GB
    LaCie w/Lightscribe DVD
I have this "cobbled" arrangement because I just upgraded from an eMac and needed these drives to manage video files, audio files, photos, etc. While I'd love to go out and buy new internals to install in my spare bays, and migrate the data to them, I will have to do that in stages as my budget is tapped out at the moment. My MacPro is the base version of the early 2008 units, with 300GB internal.
In the interim, is it worth troubleshooting firmware updates for these externals, or am I destined to continue to have firewire problems? Is there a straight-forward/inexpensive way to remove these drives from enclosures/install in drive bays with an adaptor? I believe the external hard drives are all ATA type drives.
Thanks in advance for any counsel.

I would assume that the Maxtor may be SATA. Does it have an eSATA port? Also, there were a lot of threads (in OS X Leopard forum) about those OneTouch units. Same can be said for LaCie problems.
Yes, check for firmware and configuration. In some cases, and what I do with any new OS, is to reformat all drives - gradually. Given the age of the eMac I'd guess firmware is out of date, and that the drives are formatted some time ago. While you don't have to use GUID, it is a good idea eventually, or just reformat a drive.
Don't forget to test your drives with Disk Warrior (4.1) also.
750GB WD Caviar is $139 SATA.

Are you using daisy chains? you have one FW bus shared by front and back ports. Do you have any on FW800 or using FW400 to FW800 adapter cable? PCI Express FW400 card might even help a little.
Never had trouble with OWC enclosures:

  • Install second SATA Drive

    Hi,
I currently have a PM G4 with two internal ATA drives installed and one SATA drive installed. I want to install a second SATA drive and have the extra power connection and SATA connection, but my question is where do I get side rails so I can install the secong SATA drive on top of the first similar to how the ATA drives are connected.
    Thanks,
    Bob

you can if you take your optical drive out.

  • XP install problem with Maxtor SATA

I installed XP Pro on an older 4gig IDE drive first, everything booted fine and worked great.  However when I received my Maxtor 250 gig SATA I cannot install XP on it.  The problem is that I copy all the necessary files onto the drive and when XP reboots to get into Windows the first time, it hangs or goes into a reboot loop.  All I get is a blank screen, no error messages.  I followed the "single SATA drive" procedures setting the drive up as a single array as well as just not loading the RAID drivers at all.  Both give the same result.  Also tried switching the SATA connections between 3 and 4. Is this a power supply problem, as it only has 18a on the 12 volt?  The Maxtor drive is detected and installs when booting the 4gig IDE into windows.  Any ideas?
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    Kingston 3200 HyperX
    Maxtor 250GB SATA
    Athlon 64 3000
    Thermaltake 410W
    NEC 2510 DVDRW

I had similar problems when I setup my system.
I got a WD 120 GB SATA.  I have XP Home upgrade CD.  I was using a Sony DVD-ROM.  I have built and re-built my older systems using my XP Home CD and never had a problem (and using a DVD-ROM).
But with my SATA drive I got errors that some files could not be copied to the hard drive.  Windows would say press "Enter" to try again and then after a few "enters" it would then copy the file and continue.  It would stop about 4 times with this problem.  All files eventually copied, but then Windows would fail duing setup.  Sometimes a BSOD...sometimes Windows setup would say it had encountered an error and could not continue.
I tried 60 GB partition...80 GB partition.....one time it could not read the drivers from the floppy disk and I had to make a new one.
I tried everything.  Took out my X800 and put in a TI4200.  Tried different RAM.
When I (accidently) formatted the HD for one partition (the full 120 GB) it worked perfectly.
I am still not sure what the problem really was..I wish I knew.  But once I got Windows up and running and updated, my system has been rock solid stable.

  • Problem with i915 Intel driver panic..

    Hello,
I just recently reinstalled Arch on my laptop.  I have a problem with my laptop. When I went to install the Nvidia Optimus stuff and configure my Xorg.conf I was met with problems with the Intel Driver timing out.  When I boot up I get the normal post screen, then grub, I then go to see the GDM login and instead of getting it I just get a black screen.  When I remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf I can boot into Gnome Shell, else I have to switch run levels and login that way.  I have every package up-to-date.  And I haven't seen an /var/log/Xorg.0.log either else I would have posted it.  One other thing is I have added my user account to the Bumblebee account.  One other thing is when I move my web browser around my video flickers..  Any help I can receive with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
I assume you have installed the graphic card driver from the Intel website and you use NOT a Toshiba graphic driver which was designed especially for the notebook usage.
Well, Toshiba recommend using the Toshiba drivers. In this case you should try to use the recommended graphic driver which you can download from the Toshiba driver page.

  • Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver

I rummaged around in here looking at opengl topics and others associated with the above error, but I'm not seeing what I'm encountering (or I am and I don't recognize it!).....
I bought CS4 a week or so ago, and installed it on a system running XP32 with service pack 3, 4GB of ram withe the /3GB switch set, nVidia 8600 GT card (which according to the list is supported), and multiple spindles for images, scratch, applications, and so on. I found other topics earlier so I downloaded the most recent drivers for my video card.
I'm not crashing and burning, but I'm getting some messages...
I opened an image, and while working on it I wanted to do a transform/warp. I got the message that Photoshop couldn't perform the operation because there wasn't enough memory. It didn't crash but I had to shut down CS4 and restart it to do the warp.
Most recently I opened a couple images for a panorama, and while doing the merge I got the message that "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled gpu enhancements." It tells me to check for the latest drivers - I've ALREADY got the lastest drivers. Again, no crash, just the warning. It completed the panorama.
There have been a couple other occurrences of messages of this type, so I'm curious if there's some set of preferences or system settting I need to adjust to optimize things? I've alrady adjusted the nVidia settings because I also run Lightroom and they're having problems too.
I've read the tech notes for the video and such and didn't find any set of optimizations there so is there a set of adjustments beyond the preferences that needs to be adjusted to improve memory and video performance? And if so, can someone point me to them.

As I understand it (suspect at best) XP32 can address 4 gig of memory. the /3gb switch lets the applications get at 3 gig of that. If my video card takes the first 256MB, and XP is guaranteed the other 750 of the 1st gig, and in the CS4 performance preferences I should be giving it from 1462 - 1895 MB (I've given it around 1890), that leaves me with another gig or so... Is that limited to applications or can XP use it? In any case, I'm not crashing, I just get the message every so often about being out of memory. I don't recall ever seeing this with CS3, but new version, new oddities...

  • Photoshop CS5.1 Crashes Upon Opening: "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver-"

Every time I try to open photoshop I get a window that pops up and says:
"Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements.  Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software.
GPU enhancements can be enable in the Performance panel of Preferences."
Then windows shuts the program down.  The details of the problem are:
"Files that help describe the problem:
      C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\WER70AD.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
      C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\WER9389.tmp.appcompat.txt
      C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\WER9407.tmp.hdmp"
    I'm on a custom Asus
    I'm using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit
    16GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 2GB video card
    Intel i7 core 2.2 GHz
    12 GB of memory
The error happens so quickly that I don't have time to do anything.  Please help.  >.<  I've been on hold for *checks phone* 2 hours exactly.  Wow.  It is a legit copy and was working last month with no trouble.  I've updated the drivers and tried a few solutions that have worked for other people that I found on Google (such as disabling CUDA and setting my "power management mode" to "prefer maximum performance" on my video card) but so far nothing has worked.
    Thanks in advance!

It has stopped crashing because somehow it turned off "Enable GL Drawing" on its own because I could never even get a menu open.  Not sure how it did that but I am grateful.  I still get the error when I open Photoshop up but at least it hasn't crashed yet.  At the time when it was crashing I never would have been able to get you the system info due to the speed that it was crashing upon just opening the program.  In case you still need it:

  • Problem with the Display Driver

    Hi.
I just got this message when I started Adobe Photoshop today, that's the CS4 edition, about that there was a problem with the Display driver: "Photoshop have encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences"
My problem is not what to do but how to do it. I went to System profiler and found something "ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, and: Chipset Model: ATI,RadeonHD2600".
And so I want to ATI's website but can't find what I'm looking for.
    Any help?

I have cs6 - master collection. I bought it on last december and i didn't upgrade it.
"After Effects" works for some minutes and then it stucks and give the massege above
"Display driver NVIDIA Windows kernel Mode Driveer, Version 334.89 stopped, responding and has succesfully recovered."
and preimer works and suddenly the computer crashes not before giving the massege :
"The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver due to exceeding the Windows Time-Out limit and is unable to continue.
The aaplication must close.  error code: 7"
    I have new computer :
proccesor   :Intel Core i7-4700MQ Haswell 2.4GHz
    Nvidia Geforce GT 740M
    Video NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 740M 2GB
    ram  8GB DDR3
    hard disk :  1TB 5400RPM + 8GB SSD Cache
operating system :Windows 8 64 bit.

  • I am getting an error encountered problem with the display driver for my Photoshop CS5 extended

I have Windows 7 and have used CS5 extended with no problems for quite a while now.
Last week I started up CS5 and received the error:
"Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturers website for the latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences."
"Please close program and uninstall and re-install if problem persists"
I was able to edit, however when I went to save my work it would not do so. The following error came up.
"Could not complete the command because the extension could not be loaded"
"Could not save a copy as .....because of a program error"
I checked to make sure I have the latest driver, I also uninstalled and re-installed the program and I am still getting the errors.
    Can anyone help with this?
