[SOLVED] Problem with UNIX permissions
Hello everyone.
It seems I don't have the permission to write in a folder but I don't understand why :
olivier:~$ ls -l /srv/
total 8
dr-xr-xr-x 2 root ftp 4096 Feb 14 10:16 ftp
drwxrwxr-x 2 http http 4096 Feb 22 16:53 http
olivier:~$ cat /etc/group | grep http
http::33:olivier
olivier:~$ cd /srv/http
olivier:/srv/http$ touch myfile
touch: cannot touch `myfile': Permission denied
So /srv/http is owned by user http of group http, with write permission for group members.
I am part of the http group but I can't create (or delete) a file in /srv/http.
Is this behaviour normal?
Thanks!

I guess that was the problem since now after rebooting it works!
Thanks.

[Solved] Problem with file permissions for a group
I'm working on a simple Apache HTTP server just to get a small education in proper unix work.
To save myself sudoing everything (and generally because it seems the proper way to use unix), I'm trying to give my user control over the /srv directory. So I ran:
- `sudo groupadd srvadmin` to create a group called srvadmin
- `sudo chown -R :srvadmin /srv` to change the group-owner of /srv to srvadmin (and all files inside it)
- `sudo chmod -vR g+w /srv` to give /srv and all its files group write permission
- `sudo gpasswd -a <me> srvadmin` to add my user to the srvadmin group
But I still can't create or edit files in /srv
"ls -l / | grep srv" gives:
drwxrwxr-x 4 root srvadmin 4096 Dec 19 17:44 srv
all the files and directories inside /srv also have group write permissions and are owned by user "root" and group "srvadmin"
"cat /etc/group | grep srv" gives:
srvadmin:x:1000:<me>
However, possibly herein lies a clue:
"id" gives:
uid=1000(<me>) gid=100(users) groups=100(users),7(lp),10(wheel),50(games),91(video),92(audio),93(optical),95(storage),96(scanner),98(power)
That is, "id" doesn't tell me I'm in the srvadmin group.
It seems like there's an important concept about groups and permissions that I'm not getting, but reading several man and wiki pages hasn't enlightened me. Could anyone suggest what I'm missing?
Thanks.

No, our job is to tell you to do it yourself: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … ow_to_Post (second to last bullet)
Ok, this is pretty embarrassing given the parallels with the topic of this thread, but I coudn't edit the title (which is the reason for my earlier remark; I assumed I didn't have permission)!
The text box was un-editable (not "disabled", I just couldn't edit the text in it). I managed to change it in the end by deleting all the text and typing a new title. I think it may have been just because the title was at the exact character limit. -

kari-mattiHello again.
I'm still having problems with this. I made
a simple servlet that reads from and writes
to text file. The reading part work fine on my
computer, but the writing doesn't, not even
an exception is thrown if the file exists that
I'm trying to write to. If I try to create a new
file I'll get an exception about file permissions.
I also asked a friend of mine to try this same
servlet on his windows computer and it works
as it should.
Here's the code
import javax.servlet.*;
import javax.servlet.http.*;
import java.io.*;
public class ReadServlet extends HttpServlet
public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
String s = "";
PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
String docroot = getServletContext().getRealPath( "/" );
out.println("docroot: "+docroot);
File file = new File(docroot+"test.txt");
if(file.exists())
s = readFile(file);
out.println(s);
else
out.println("file not found");
//file.createNewFile(); // causes exception
//out.println("new file created.");
writeFile(file, "written by servlet");
out.println("Now look in the file "+file.getPath());
out.println("and see if it contains text 'written by servlet'");
public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
doPost(request, response);
private String readFile(File file)
FileInputStream fis = null;
BufferedInputStream bis = null;
DataInputStream dis = null;
String s = "";
try
fis = new FileInputStream(file);
bis = new BufferedInputStream(fis);
dis = new DataInputStream(bis);
s = dis.readLine();
fis.close();
bis.close();
dis.close();
catch(Exception e)
e.printStackTrace();
return s;
private void writeFile(File file, String s)
FileOutputStream fos = null;
BufferedOutputStream bos = null;
DataOutputStream dos = null;
try
fos = new FileOutputStream(file);
bos = new BufferedOutputStream(fos);
dos = new DataOutputStream(bos);
dos.writeChars(s);
fos.flush();
bos.flush();
dos.flush();
fos.close();
bos.close();
dos.close();
catch(Exception e)
e.printStackTrace();
}And if someone wants to test this servlet I can
give a war package.
Any advices?

Problem with unix "foreach" command
Hi,
I am facing a problem with unix command "foreach". I trying to process files using unix foreach command. When running the script with 500 or 1000 files. It is running fine. But when I am trying to the script with 2000+ files. Its throwing an error "Arguments too long".
below is the syntax I am using in the script:
foreach name (*)
end
Could anybody help me on this issue.
Thanks in Advance.
Manasa.UNIX/Linux systems expand wildcards onto the command line before invoking the
individual commands. In effect, the shell rewrites the command line you give
substituting the wildcard expansion. There is a limit to how long this command
line can get.
For example, suppose you have two files ("foo" and "bar") in your directory.
The line:
foreach name (*)
echo $name
endgets rewritten to:
foreach name (foo bar)
echo $name
endand then the shell starts interpreting your script. So if you have many, many
files, the rewritten line becomes:
foreach name (f1 f2 f3 ... f10927)
echo $name
endso chances are the "foreach" line simply gets too long. To avoid problems do
it this way; it avoids any problems based on how many files you have:
ls | while read name
do
echo $name
doneThis way the shell never exceeds its line length limitations because the
wildcard is never expanded.
Cheers -

There are some problems on AIX V4.3.x (Motif 2.x) and older releasese of
Forte (up to Forte 3.M.x) and so on and it is necessary to look what it is.
Maybe it is possible for you to say which widgets are the problem.

[solved] findutils - problem with file permissions
Hey,
I tried running makepkg -c for an updated PKGBUILD of a package I maintain in the AUR (gretl), and it seemed fine but then hit:
==> Tidying install...
-> Purging other files...
-> Compressing man and info pages...
-> Stripping debugging symbols from binaries and libraries...
-> Removing libtool .la files...
-> Removing empty directories...
find: invalid predicate `-delete'
I'd had some other strange errors with find over the past few weeks or so (my last -Syu was after this month's catalyst driver came out with support for the current kernel) but had shrugged them off. This error made me decide to try reinstalling findutils, and it gave the error:
error: cannot remove file 'usr/bin/find': Operation not permitted
a bit stupidly, I tried pacman -Rd then -S findutils, and now I get
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
findutils: /usr/bin/find exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
missing dependency for ca-certificates : findutils
missing dependency for initscripts : findutils
missing dependency for mkinitcpio : findutils
missing dependency for texinfo : findutils
ls -als /usr/bin | grep find gives:
12 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 10636 Mar 25 16:24 deepfind
64 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 59200 May 9 01:58 efinder
64 -rwxr-xr-x 1 500 500 59536 Jun 16 14:49 find
and rm, mv, chmod, chown etc on /usr/bin/find as root, and from livecd, all also come back with "Operation not permitted".
find seems to work fine for a few simple uses I've just tried.. but the last time I ran makepkg -c without the error was before the last system upgrade, so I'm guessing find didn't upgrade properly then due to whatever is wrong with the permissions, leading to the other errors.
Anyway, I guess the question is, can I do anything to get rid of /usr/bin/find and reinstall findutils? don't mind so much about missing dependencies as I tend not to upgrade that often, but find not doing what it should is a bit of a pain.
Last edited by manehi (2009-08-30 08:52:20)mm I tried all that, and no luck. though trying adduser 500 did give me a helpful reminder that usernames can't start with numbers...
anyway, it's not a huge deal atm, and I can always clean reinstall the / partition if things really break. Thanks all the same.
PS:
huh, just had a thought - I remember how I used to get annoyed how mounting partitions using ext2ifs in windows didn't respect permissions properly. and now I almost wish I had a windows partition / that this wasn't a laptop hard drive...

[Solved] Problem with mouse cursor gnome3
Hi
I moved back to Archlinux after a brief stay in LMDE, and test the new GNOME3, I am unpleasantly surprised that after a while the mouse is moving himself toward the top of the screen. I searched the internet, and seems to be a problem with the gnome-shell for some time, but I am not able to find the solution.
Momentarily solved by restarting gnome with ALT + F2 + r + Enter, but after a while, same thing happens again.
Can be well with photography programs, but of course if you do not solve this issue, GNOME, I can not use
Can you give me a helping hand?
Thanks and regards

[SOLVED] Problem with Vuze and Java RE x86_64
Hello all !
First of all, sorry if this issue was posted before, but find no related issue similar to mine.
Using pacman, I successfully installed JRE (version 6u16-1-x86_64) and Vuze (version 4.2.0.8-1, former Azureus), but Vuze doesn't want to start.
Running the Vuze's executable in the gnome-terminal, I notice messages from vuze informing it can't find Java executable ("Java exec not found in PATH, starting auto-search..." AND "OOPS, unable to locate java exec in /usr/java/latest /usr/java /usr/lib/jvm/latest /usr/lib/jvm hierarchy") and therefore cannot start the Vuze UI. I also tried but failed in verify the version of Java with the command "java -version" due to command not found.
What is the best approach to fix this problem with Java 64 bits?
Thanks in advance

[SOLVED] Problem with symlinking and PKGBUILD
Hello Everyone,
I have created the javafx-sdk package on AUR, and make the installation a lot simplier. But I am having a problem with the creationg of the symlink.
So I have 1 binary file "javafxpackager" in the "bin" folder that I need to symlink into /usr/bin. This is the method I am using
mkdir -p ${pkgdir}/usr/bin
chmod +x ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager
ln -s ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager
My problem is that this method doesn't work at all. The only way to me after the installation to make the symlink working is by doing this :
ls chmod +x /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager /usr/bin/
In order to make it work.
How can I solve this problem ?
Thanks in Advance,
Luis Da Costa
Last edited by aliasbody (2012-06-26 00:27:15)Problem solved ! Here's how to do it :
mkdir -p ${pkgdir}/usr/bin
chmod +x ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager
ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager
I didn't know, but you can symlink a file that doesn't exist yet, and this is what I did. I use and non existing (yet) javafxpackager binary from the non existing (yet) "/usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/" folder, and send it to the ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager, that will be copied into the original "/usr/bin/" folder.
So this problem is solved and I'm happy

[SOLVED] Problem with UTC and CST
I probably made a mistake while installing Arch Linux and the clocks in my computer are all a mess.
Right now the UTC time its 6+ hours, I changed it in the bios to the right hour but that give me -6 hours in the local time thats displayed in Arch Linux and gave me the right hour in Windows 7.
timedatectl
Local time: Fri 2013-12-20 12:33:12 CST
Universal time: Fri 2013-12-20 18:33:12 UTC
RTC time: Fri 2013-12-20 18:33:12
Timezone: America/Mexico_City (CST, -0600)
NTP enabled: yes
NTP synchronized: yes
RTC in local TZ: no
DST active: no
Last DST change: DST ended at
Sun 2013-10-27 01:59:59 CDT
Sun 2013-10-27 01:00:00 CST
Next DST change: DST begins (the clock jumps one hour forward) at
Sun 2014-04-06 01:59:59 CST
Sun 2014-04-06 03:00:00 CDT
PS: Already did everything in the wiki and tried with some [SOLVED] posts.
Edit: The problem with this its that when i use Windows 7 (to play DotA... or using the iPod, since no player can edit the files in the ipod) the hour is 6+ hours, that causes problems with the configuration in the ipod since each time i connect it the clock (that its also my only clock) changes to 6+ hours. Its maybe irrelevant for someone but i would like to have the right hour in all my systems.
Last edited by Senketsu (2013-12-20 19:16:54)I am with Scimmia, everything looks correct. But, If you boot Windows, it will try to change the BIOS clock to local time unless you tell it otherwise.
Edit for both of your edits. Yes, fix windows

[SOLVED] Problem with modules and udev
Hi everybody,
I've been configuring Arch on my new laptop the last few days and today as I was going to perform the first backup, I noticed that my external HDD does not show up in /dev/ when I plug it in. I figured it could be a problem with udev and the fact that in my /etc/rc.conf I use MOD_AUTOLOAD="no" with an explicit list of MODULES generated with hwdetect (as suggested in the wiki).
To "solve" this I just changed MOD_AUTOLOAD to "yes" and after a reboot everything worked fine.
My questions are:
1) Is it possible to keep that feature (udev detects usb drives and creates the corresponding /dev/sdX) while having MOD_AUTOLOAD="no" ? What is/are the appropriate module(s) I have to put in my MODULES array ?
2) What other such "basic" MODULES could be very useful that hwdetect does not tell about.
Sorry for any English mistakes (I'm not a native speaker) and thank you in advance for your help,
yms
Last edited by yms (2010-01-06 12:48:20)1) Thank you, it works perfectly.
2) Yes I know the question is weird. The thing is I have no precise idea at the moment and I just wanted to know if there are other very widely used features such as the one described in 1) that hwdetect ommits and that has to be loaded in MODULES.
Anyway, thank you very much, I consider this matter [solved] -

Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmst'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmsu'

Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspt'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspu'
Unknown media type in type 'fonts/package'
Unknown media type in type 'interface/x-winamp-skin'
i have installed kde 4.5.5-1
Do you know some solution for my problem?
edit: update firefox solve my problem
Last edited by ElNinijo (2013-06-08 08:35:12)I've had this happen now and again. You can rebind the lease yourself with:
$ dhcpcd --rebind
You could also try increasing the timeout by adding
TimeoutDHCP=
to your netctl profile/s - see netctl.profile(5) as WonderWoofy suggests. Although I haven't tried the latter.
