[solved]Problems with 82801H (ICH8 Family) sound

Hi!
I've got some problems with my sound.
I read http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=50047 (adding options in modprobe.conf)
I tried http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALS … s_and_test
and followed http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Len … X300#Sound
But for some reason I simply can't get any sound at all.
My laptop is a lenovo x61s with
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
The modules (same as first link), are loaded without problems.
I've run alsaconf, checked modprobe.conf and modprobe.d/sound, looks ok
I get the channels in alsamixer, and my regular user is a member of audio group.
Trying e.g. vlc gives no error, simply no sound..
Following the test (second link, with aplay), gives no error.. simply no sound
I can't find anything in the logs..
The card worked perfectly in both Ubuntu and Slackware... so I can't see why it shouldn't work in Arch..
Help : )

Yeey I solved it!
It seems that snd-hda-intel module can't always recongnized what kind of soundcard you're using.
By supplying the correct model option to the module, I finally got my sound.
Available models are found in
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Document … ration.txt
For my laptop it was "thinkpad" : )
Thx

  • [solved] Problems with multiple applications running sound...

Multiple programs on my system are unable to use sound at the same time. When any two programs that are supposed to output sound run together, the program that started the output first prevents the other from outputing. I read the Wiki page on ALSA, but have had no luck so far in identifying the problem. I do believe that I am using alsa, as the sound of the program with sound does change as I adjust the alsa mixer volumes.
This started happening when I reinstalled arch this moring with XFCE (I needed to add more space to root partition and replace my DE, and fealt it would be easiest to just reinstall the OS.) In the few days I was using KDE, the sound worked fine. I also previously used Ubuntu on this system in which the sound worked fine.
I am inclined to believe that It is either something I have not configured properly (however I did not do anything to sound setup in the KDE install) or a package that did not install with XFCE, but does with KDE-base.
EDIT: Also, If the sounds are coming from the same application they can both play, IE I can hear 2 youtube videos at the same time but not a youtube video and VLC or Skype.

It may be worth adding that I had no .asoundrc in my home directory
I have also just discovered that flash seems to be the program that causes the interferences, as VLC and Skype run fine  together. I am going to try the instructions by Karol, reboot, and report the results.

  • Problem with content: 7 - Bad sound Data

    When I do the following...

    I get the error...

I am using the test.mp3 files that comes with Flash8.

    OK. This combo works!
    version flash Player 8
    action script 2.0
Audio Stream: MP3, 128 kbps, Stereo best
Audio event: MP3, 128 kbps, Stereo best
    Override sound settings (unchecked)
    But this combo does not!!
    version flash lite 2.0
    action script 2.0
Audio Stream: MP3, 128 kbps, Stereo best
Audio event: MP3, 128 kbps, Stereo best
    Override sound settings (unchecked)
Still get the error on all Nokias except Nokia 90 which gets
no error but just does not play the file

  • [SOLVED]Problem with sound in HDMI

    Hello good society of Arch
Now I have problems with sound from HDMI. I use Arch as an tvPc, wasting movies and tv shows on it. I use ALSA and it works well, except of a few files that I have, then there is picture but sound is either twisted or not played at all. It does not matter whether I use vlc or mplayer, I'm experiencing the same problem.
I have not found anything about this with google, other problems have been either hdmi sound working or not, not like it is with me, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.
I know that the files are ok, I can play them in anther pc I have (also using Arch on that pc).
Does anybody know what the problem might be? What do I have to look at to find out what the problem is? This have been like this for some time now, but I haven't looked into it before, because I don't use TV that muts, but the wife does and when she stats blaming Arch, I have too do something about it.
I have never encountered problem with Arch that i cant solve by using this forum and google
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED] Problem with second SATA drive

My laptop has two hard drive bays, and just recently I added a second SATA drive (moved it from my old laptop) to the extra bay.
Now, anytime the second hard drive /dev/sdb has any heavy disk activity, it appears to cause a shutdown of the SATA port for the first drive (/dev/sda)!  Though the second drive is still fine, and I can still write to it until the system crashes from the root drive (on /dev/sda) being shutdown.
If I don't mount and use the second drive, the first drive works just fine, and I can pound it with traffic without issue.
I can reproduce this problem by copying large amounts of data to drive 2.
This is when I get in my dmesg when the first SATA drive shuts down:

I have experimented, and found that if I turn off NCQ on the kernel command line in my bootloader (libata.force=noncq), that it takes longer before the problem occurs.  Though, if I write enough to the second drive, it does still happen after a while, just greatly reduced its chances of happening.
Is it possible that the old drive (sdb) is causing the problem?  I noticed that it is much noisier than I remember when the drive head moves around.
Another curiosity while I was trying to duplicate the problem:
      - I start a large file copy from sda -> sdb
      - At the same time in another terminal, I do "find / -print"
      - When I hear the drive 2 head moving, it pauses the output of the "find" command.
Every time I hear the head move, I see the find output pause.  Its almost like the drive seek on drive 2 causes the whole Sata controller to pause while the head moves.  Very odd!
Anyone have any ideas?   I think the next thing I will try is borrow a drive from another machine, and do the big write to it to see if I get the same results.
If it is of any help, here is some more info on the laptop:

It appears my drive one really is failing.  It was the first drive and not the second making the loud head seek sound.  I borrowed another drive from a friend, and copied my drive one to it.   No problems with the new drive in place.

  • [Solved] Problem with mouse cursor gnome3

    Hi
I moved back to Archlinux after a brief stay in LMDE, and test the new GNOME3, I am unpleasantly surprised that after a while the mouse is moving himself toward the top of the screen. I searched the internet, and seems to be a problem with the gnome-shell for some time, but I am not able to find the solution.
Momentarily solved by restarting gnome with ALT + F2 + r + Enter, but after a while, same thing happens again.
Can be well with photography programs, but of course if you do not solve this issue, GNOME, I can not use
Can you give me a helping hand?
    Thanks and regards
    Rafa

I don't know about Gnome, but my laptop had that problem.  I tracked it down the 3d accelerometer being used to simulate a joystick.  Of course, I also had (previously) set up another joystick to operate as a mouse.  In the end, the cursor "drifted" when the laptop was not level
    YMMV

  • [SOLVED] Problem with MPD and ALSA

Hello, I'm having problems with mpd using alsa output.
My alsa system works, I can play mp3 using mplayer -ao alsa, and flash plugin plays sound, my user (and also mpd user)is in the audio group.
But then mpd can't open the alsa device.
If I tell mpd to autodetect audio, it can't find anything:
(Running as root to see output, if using /etc/rc.d/mpd start, it just fails)

Check that mpd is really being run as the mpd user, and that id lists audio for the mpd user. Also post your whole mpd.conf and the output from amixer when running as the user you run mpd as.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with Vuze and Java RE x86_64

    Hello all !
First of all, sorry if this issue was posted before, but find no related issue similar to mine.
Using pacman, I successfully installed JRE (version 6u16-1-x86_64) and Vuze (version 4.2.0.8-1, former Azureus), but Vuze doesn't want to start.
Running the Vuze's executable in the gnome-terminal, I notice messages from vuze informing it can't find Java executable ("Java exec not found in PATH, starting auto-search..." AND "OOPS, unable to locate java exec in /usr/java/latest /usr/java /usr/lib/jvm/latest /usr/lib/jvm hierarchy") and therefore cannot start the Vuze UI. I also tried but failed in verify the version of Java with the command "java -version" due to command not found.
What is the best approach to fix this problem with Java 64 bits?
    Thanks in advance

Yep, perfect answer - issue solved. Thanks a lot!

  • [SOLVED] Problem with symlinking and PKGBUILD

    Hello Everyone,
I have created the javafx-sdk package on AUR, and make the installation a lot simplier. But I am having a problem with the creationg of the symlink.
So I have 1 binary file "javafxpackager" in the "bin" folder that I need to symlink into /usr/bin. This is the method I am using
    mkdir -p ${pkgdir}/usr/bin
    chmod +x ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager
    ln -s ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager
My problem is that this method doesn't work at all. The only way to me after the installation to make the symlink working is by doing this :
    ls chmod +x /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager
    sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager /usr/bin/
In order to make it work.
How can I solve this problem ?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Luis Da Costa

Problem solved ! Here's how to do it :
    mkdir -p ${pkgdir}/usr/bin
    chmod +x ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/jvm/${pkgname}/bin/javafxpackager
    ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/javafxpackager ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager
I didn't know, but you can symlink a file that doesn't exist yet, and this is what I did. I use and non existing (yet) javafxpackager binary from the non existing (yet) "/usr/lib/jvm/javafx-sdk/bin/" folder, and send it to the ${pkgdir}/usr/bin/javafxpackager, that will be copied into the original "/usr/bin/" folder.
So this problem is solved and I'm happy
(PS : thanks @ngoonee and @Trilby for you help ! Thanks to you I found out a little bit faster where the problem was ^^)

  • [SOLVED] Problem with "su" and "login".

Hi, I reinstalled Arch Linux today when I updated "filesystem" and reboot appeared an error with root device, but I solved with installation CD.
I restarted laptop after solving error with root device when I went to XFCE4 and open a terminal I tried to login as root with "su" and "su -" but showed this error:
    bash: su: command not found
So I rebooted to start in text mode.
When loaded SLIM I press ctrl+alt+F1 to enter text mode.
I type root to login but did'nt appear to enter the pass, appeared again to enter login. I tried type my user but did the same.
    Someone can help me?
    Thanks!

Thank you falconindy. I upgrade with --force because I search in Google the problem show "filesystem" when I tried install and I read that solution is upgrade "filesystem" with --foce.
I tried to reinstall util-linux and now works. Thank you!

I used "rcutree" option as shown in the post that you put, but I've deleted all changes made to use default configurations, because the solution of the post didn't work

  • [SOLVED] Problem with UTC and CST

I probably made a mistake while installing Arch Linux and the clocks in my computer are all a mess.
Right now the UTC time its 6+ hours, I changed it in the bios to the right hour but that give me -6 hours in the local time thats displayed in Arch Linux and gave me the right hour in Windows 7.
    timedatectl
Local time: Fri 2013-12-20 12:33:12 CST
Universal time: Fri 2013-12-20 18:33:12 UTC
             RTC time: Fri 2013-12-20 18:33:12
            Timezone: America/Mexico_City (CST, -0600)
         NTP enabled: yes
    NTP synchronized: yes
    RTC in local TZ: no
          DST active: no
Last DST change: DST ended at
                      Sun 2013-10-27 01:59:59 CDT
                      Sun 2013-10-27 01:00:00 CST
Next DST change: DST begins (the clock jumps one hour forward) at
                      Sun 2014-04-06 01:59:59 CST
                      Sun 2014-04-06 03:00:00 CDT
PS: Already did everything in the wiki and tried with some [SOLVED] posts.
Edit: The problem with this its that when i use Windows 7 (to play DotA... or using the iPod, since no player can edit the files in the ipod) the hour is 6+ hours, that causes problems with the configuration in the ipod since each time i connect it the clock (that its also my only clock) changes to 6+ hours. Its maybe irrelevant for someone but i would like to have the right hour in all my systems.

I am with Scimmia, everything looks correct.   But, If you boot Windows, it will try to change the BIOS clock to local time unless you tell it otherwise.
Edit for both of your edits.  Yes, fix windows

  • [SOLVED] Problem with modules and udev

    Hi everybody,
I've been configuring Arch on my new laptop the last few days and today as I was going to perform the first backup, I noticed that my external HDD does not show up in /dev/ when I plug it in. I figured it could be a problem with udev and the fact that in my /etc/rc.conf I use MOD_AUTOLOAD="no" with an explicit list of MODULES generated with hwdetect (as suggested in the wiki).
To "solve" this I just changed MOD_AUTOLOAD to "yes" and after a reboot everything worked fine.
    My questions are:
    1) Is it possible to keep that feature (udev detects usb drives and creates the corresponding /dev/sdX) while having MOD_AUTOLOAD="no" ? What is/are the appropriate module(s) I have to put in my MODULES array ?
    2) What other such "basic" MODULES could be very useful that hwdetect does not tell about.
Sorry for any English mistakes (I'm not a native speaker) and thank you in advance for your help,
    yms

    1) Thank you, it works perfectly.
    2) Yes I know the question is weird. The thing is I have no precise idea at the moment and I just wanted to know if there are other very widely used features such as the one described in 1) that hwdetect ommits and that has to be loaded in MODULES.
Anyway, thank you very much, I consider this matter [solved]
