[Solved] (Python3) Ignoring lines with control characters

Long story short, I log the output of an in-house program with tee. The program displays a progress meter. When I read the file into a list, I end up with lines like:
>>> temp_file[18]
''Write: 1% [> ] 1 MB\x1b[2K\n'
I can filter these out with:
for line in temp_file:
if not '\x1b' in line:
do_something_with(line)
This leaves me with exactly what I want, but maybe someone knows of a better way? Thanks.

progandy wrote:In my book printableset.issuperset is more readable than an any(for c in line), but that might be my mathematical knowledge about sets.
To each his own. A string is not a set and I would never ask a question like "Is the set of characters in this string a subset of the set of characters in string.printable?" On the other hand, "Is it true, for any character c in this string, that c is not in string.printable?" seems relatively straightforward. But that's a subjective measure.
Edit: Take care, since str.isprintable interprets tabs and newlines as non-printable. Maybe do str.expandtabs(1).isprintable().
Hrm. Yuck. No, in that case I'll fall back to my original version. Disclaimer removed.
Actually, on second thought, I don't know why I went for any() in the first place, since its complement/counterpart is also provided:
for line in temp_file:
if all(c in string.printable for c in line):
do_something_with(line)

  • Input stream with control characters

    I am using the HTTPRequest to get data from a MySQL varchar(3000) field.
    when I read the data I get the following error message.

    QUESTION:
    How can I capture data with control characters?

    The MySQL column type is varchar(3000) basically a string of 3000 characters to my understanding

  • File with control characters in Unicode

    Hi All,
    I have a peculiar problem.
    I have to prepare 6 files in SAP to be sent to the Mainframe server(legacy system) which sends the FAX to the clients.Now,these files should contain the hexadecimal characters like '1A', along with a lot of normal data.
    For the rest of the data,I have defined the Standard texts and defined the Text symbols and it is done.
    But at the end of each line,I have to insert the hex 1A.
    This is because the mainframe will understand this hexadecimal and it is mandatory to insert it.
    I have checked the character value of hexadecimal 1A which is 'Substitute'.
    I have no clue as to how to insert this control character along with the rest of the data.
    A quick response will be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Puneet Jhari.

    Hi Vijay,
    I agree that the hexadecimal and char can not be concatenated in ECC.
    But my requirement is, that before this file is sent to the mainframe,it would be formatted using the DCF(Data Composition Facility) format.Once it is opened with DCF,the hex characters should be shown as it is as I have tried to develop them in SAP.
    Say,for ex,
    If I have tried to write a hex value for '1A' in SAP,once it is opened in DCF,it should be represented as the same hex value or the symbol for it and should not be displayed in the char format.
    I doubt that if I convert the hex to char and then transfer,once it is opened at the target system,it would not be represented as a hex but something else,lets say #.
    I hope you are getting what I am trying to explain.
    I know the requirement is peculiar,but this is how it is(Client's demands).....
    If not,then let me know.

  • How do I 'Find & Replace' with control characters - paragraph, carriage return, tab

    In Pages 4.3 (Pages '09) I could insert special characters into the Find & Replace fields.  It was great.  Excellent way to clean up & recover text from a pdf or html.
    In Pages 5.2 that capability seems to be gone.  When I turn on the special characters [Show Invisibles - shift-cmd-I], I can highlight said invisible, copy it, then paste it into the Find&Replace field.  Nope.  It goes in as a space, and the Find command only finds spaces.  Not the invisible that I was looking for.
    This was a major feature for me, folks.  Much better than Word's approach.  Now it is gone (I fear), and the Find & Replace is worse than Word's.
    How can I recover/attain this feature?

    I have struggled to find this "feature" for a while.
    It CANNOT be that Apple stripped out a core capability of even a basic text editor.
    Apple, a reply here because this is a F%$#$%^ joke if true.

    Hi:
    I have a "small" problem, perhaps you could help me.
    We have created a new Controlling Area, but it is created only with 3 characters, instead of four. We have been working with no problem until me have to create a Purchase Order with some profiles. They cannot create any PO. If we go to SU53 transaction we got the message in object K_PCA. There is a blank in string Responsibility Area, and the system cannot recognize that. This string concatenate CO Area code (and a blank) and Profit Center, but keeps a blank between them.
    Do you know how to solve it? We cannot delete CO Area because we have many data created in it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards.

    Hi:
    I have to try it, but it does not work. In SU53 I have this message:

    There is a blank PCGLA B0101, and not in PCGLAB0101.
    I need to delete it in master record or add it in authorization object.
    Does anybody how I can change it?

  • XML output file with Control M Characters

    Hi,
    I am using JDOM API 1.0 on Solaris platform.
    Using the XMLOuputter I write the XML data to a file. But the XML file contains Control-M characters at the end of each line..like
    <User>^M
    <Name>Satish</Name>^M
    <id>12567</id>^M
    </User>^M
    File f = new File(path,Constants.USER_XML);
    Document doc = getDocument();
    XMLOutputter out = new XMLOutputter();
    out.setFormat(Format.getPrettyFormat());
    Format outFormat = out.getFormat();
    outFormat.setLineSeparator(System.getProperty("line.separator"));
    outFormat.setIndent(" ");
    try{
    FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(f);
    out.output(doc,fw);
    } catch(IOException iox) {}I am not writing the Control-M characters. Also I am using the default encoding which is UTF-8. So how to avoid the control characters. Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Satish

    Those are carriage-return (CR) characters. I don't know anything about the classes you are using but I would suggest you let the software decide what line endings it is going to use (the XML default is line-feed (LF) only) instead of telling it. Just a guess.
    It's also possible that those CRs were in your input document and you are just copying them to the output document. XML parsers are supposed to normalize those characters to only LF but perhaps your parser isn't doing that. Just another guess.

  • [SOLVED] Why are control characters visible in text files??

    Hi,
    If I direct the output of 'ls' to a file like:

    [[01;34m32x32[[0m

    I just did the same thing on an old slackware box and no control characters are visible. The same for a recent LFS build. I realize I could probably pipe through dos2unix, but it shouldn't be happening anyway. Any input is appreciated.

    at the DOS prompt (sorry, old habits die hard :-) ) type
    alias ls
    and see what the results are.  Compare that against your slackware or lfs builds.  You will probably find that the color= option is different - most builds will not include the color ANSI sequences if you pipe the output, but if it says color=always the color codes will be included in the redirected file.
    Assuming you find an alias for ls that forces color output, you need to find where that is taking place... in your ~/.bashrc file?  in /etc/profile.d?  And change that to alias ls='ls --color=tty' or something sensible like that.

  • AppleScript puts control characters in txt file, inflating it enormously

    Hi all,
    I've come across a strange problem. I have an AppleScript file that puts up a dialog box at regular intervals asking me to write down what I am doing (to create an activity log). The file is saved to my Documents folder. This has been working just fine for several months (years), and now, all of a sudden, AppleScript fails on me. The reason is, the log file is inflated out of proportions because it contains hidden control characters (gremlins) between each letter and zillions of them between words and lines. Opening one of these files makes TextEdit go crazy ('Application not responding'). I discovered these gremlins when I opened the document in Classic mode with Word 5 (the best application ever to have been produced by MS, which allows me to remove them and make the file palatable to TextEdit again).
    But that doesn't solve the problem: Every entry continues to be inserted with another load of gremlins, and I can't understand why. I deleted preferences both for TextEdit and AppleScript, and I performed regular disk maintenance.
    TextEdit is set to save plain text files, end-of-line is Macintosh style, character set is Western Mac OS Roman. It's always been like this before when it worked ok.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Hidden control characters in file generated by AppleScript?

    Hi all,
    I've come across a strange problem. I have an AppleScript app (kindly produced for me by a member here) that gets called up by cron, which puts up a dialog box at regular intervals asking me to write down what I am doing (to create an activity log). The log is saved to my Documents folder if it doesn't already exist; otherwise my typing will just get time-stamped and added to the file.
    This has been working just fine for several months (years), and now, all of a sudden, AppleScript konks out on me -- it simply crashes. The reason, I discovered, is the log file itself. It gets inflated out of proportions (something like 2.5 Megs where 40K would suffice) because it contains hidden control characters (gremlins) between each letter and zillions of them between words and lines.
    When the script opens this inflated file, TextEdit balks ('Application not responding'), which in turn crashes AppleScript.
    I discovered these gremlins when I opened the document in Classic mode with Word 5, which allows me to remove them and thus make the file smaller and therefore palatable to TextEdit again.
    But that doesn't solve the problem: Every entry continues to be inserted with another load of gremlins, and I can't understand why. I deleted preferences both for TextEdit and AppleScript, and I perform regular disk maintenance.

    Hi Camelot,
    The script doesn't specify TextEdit -- it just creates/updates a text file which I then read with TextEdit. Here's the script, and below is the link to the test log:
    --STARTOFSCRIPT------------------------------------------
    -- Find out if the log file is actually there.
    -- We can't get the last entry of a file that doesn't exist.
    set fileExists to false
    tell application "Finder"
    if exists file "MacHD:Users:gisela:Documents:Gisela'sActivityLog.txt" then set fileExists to true
    end tell
    -- Get the last entry in the log file to present to the user.
    -- If the file wasn't there, present a default choice to the user.
    if fileExists then
    set myLogFile to open for access ((path to documents folder as text) & "Gisela'sActivityLog.txt")
    set logFileContents to read myLogFile using delimiter return
    close access myLogFile
    set lastLogEntry to last item of text items of logFileContents
    set oldTIDs to AppleScript's text item delimiters
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to tab
    set lastEntry to text item 2 of lastLogEntry
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to oldTIDs
    else
    set lastEntry to "Nothin' much."
    end if
    -- Ask the user what they're doing.
    set myLogEntry to text returned of (display dialog "So... What're you doing?" default answer lastEntry buttons {"OK"} default button "OK" with icon note)
    -- Get the date and time via "Do Shell Script" (for me, easier than mucking with AppleScript's date results).
    -- Modified order to Year Month Day# Weekday hour:min:sec [Gisela]
    set dateUnix to do shell script "date"
    set dateText to word 8 of dateUnix & " " & word 2 of dateUnix & " " & word 3 of dateUnix & " " & word 1 of dateUnix & " " & word 4 of dateUnix & ":" & word 5 of dateUnix & ":" & word 6 of dateUnix & " " & tab
    -- Open a log file on the desktop. The file is created if it doesn't exist.
    set myLogFile to open for access ((path to documents folder as text) & "Gisela'sActivityLog.txt") with write permission
    -- Write a log entry into the file.
    write dateText & myLogEntry & return to myLogFile starting at eof
    -- Close the log file.
    close access myLogFile
    -- Script by Bryan K. Vines, Corpus Christi, TX, via Apple Discussion Forum 22/5/04 and 24/5/04
    --ENDOFSCRIPT------------------------------------------
    Here's the test log => http://www.webalice.it/gisela/TestLog.txt. Had to change the name because my webspace doesn't like apostrophes (').
    This phenomenon only occurs in connection with this Activity log script. My gut tells me it's not AppleScript's fault, but I can't figure out where else to look.
    Kind regards,
    Gisela

  • Performance of JEditorPane with unicode characters

    Hi,
    I'm using a JEditorPane to edit rather large (> 15000 words) but simple HTML files. Everyting is fine until I add even a single unicode character to the text with a character code higher than 255, like a Greek omega (\u03A9). With the unicode character the control starts to take an incredibly long time to redraw (sometimes minutes) when you resize it, for instance. The strangest thing is that removing the character again does not restore performance. Can anyone explain why this is happening?
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.text.html.HTMLEditorKit;
    public class EditorPaneTest {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    StringBuffer html = new StringBuffer();
    html.append("<html><body>");
    // Uncomment next line, run and resize frame to see problem
    // html.append("<p>\u03A9</p>");
    for (int i = 0; i < 2000; i++) {
    html.append("<p>Testing, testing, testing...</p>");
    html.append("</body></html>");
    JFrame jFrame = new JFrame("Test");
    jFrame.setSize(300, 300);
    JEditorPane jEditorPane = new JEditorPane();
    jEditorPane.setEditorKit(new HTMLEditorKit());
    jFrame.add(new JScrollPane(jEditorPane));
    jFrame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JInternalFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    jFrame.setVisible(true);
    jEditorPane.setText(html.toString());
    }Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rasmus

    In the meantime, I had to solve my problem one way or another, and the only thing that came up to my mind was to use JavaMail API.
    It is not quite what I was hoping for, because it doesn't provide opening of default e-mail client on local machine, but at least it can send e-mail with Unicode characters in the subjects line, recipient addresses, etc.
    Make a new message using JavaMail and then set it's properties in a fairly simple manner, like this:
    message.setSubject( MimeUtility.encodeText("+ ... some Unicode text with Cyrillic symbols ... +", "UTF-8", "B") );I'd still like to see if there are any suggestions on how to do the similar thing with java.awt.Desktop.

  • Wrong ASCII values for control characters in Variables and Stack Call in CVI2013?

    Hi,
    I think there is an error in  "Variables and Call Stack" window if you want to look for your variables in ASCII format.
    The control characters (0 -  31) are not shown correct. They are shifted 2.
    For example:
    Character in Decimal format is 10 (LF) but when you are chancing to ASCII format it is showing \012.
    The same with 13 (CR). This character is \015 in ASCII format.
    I think that was no problem in CVI2012.
    Best regards
    Gunther
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I'm not using CVI2013 yes so I cannot respond regarding this specific product, but the code you are showing are the octal equivalent of the decimal value you specified: it could be that control characters (or generally speacking non-printable ones) are replaced with their octal equivalent in string view.
    Proud to use LW/CVI from 3.1 on.

  • [SOLVED]Asus UX32VD, problems with ACPI and Intel video driver

    1. The bigger problem seems to be Intel video driver:
    When xf86-video-intel is installed, screen stays black after booting. By adding "nomodeset" to grub doesn't help. If I don't start gdm while booting, I can boot to command line with "nomodeset".  From command line I tried "startx", but X doesn't start, probably because "nomodeset" has disabled KMS and I've understood that Intel driver needs KMS for GNOME.
    When xf86-video-vesa is installed instead of intel driver, screen is still black. By adding "nomodeset" to grub, I can see only mouse at gdm. If rebooting computer without gdm, I can start gnome from command line with startx and it works nice.
    In both setups I can connect to laptop with ssh when screen is black. With ssh I checked screen brightness, but it was maximum.
    Intel driver version: xf86-video-intel 2.20.1-3
    2. The problem with ACPI is found from dmesg, I don't think this effects to graphics problem, because with vesa driver and "acpi=off" set to grub I can start Gnome with startx. I don't even know if it effects at all on my system, dmesg shows error which effects to displayport( intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch error) these maybe related to each others:

    Sometimes with Intel driver I can see mouse while loading gdm, but then it goes to black.
    I tried to boot with Intel driver with "drm.debug=14" and "log_buf_len=16M"  as boot parameters. There is debug log from gdm, it seems to have some errors, I have not yet looked deeble on it:

    Back up all data.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
    Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
    Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
    That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
    Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
