[solved] Radeon HD 3200 & AIGLX

Hey all, I just purchased an HP Pavilion dm3, which by the way was a hell of a deal:  http://www.officemax.com/technology/com … rod2850237
The machine is very thin and light, and has been the most linux-compliant laptop I've played with.
At any rate, I've got arch up and running beautifully (after fixing HP's effed up partitioning *shakes fist*)  Everything is working:  Wireless, audio, webcam, suspend, hibernate, etc.
My last problem is that I'm only getting sudo GPU acceleration, and no AIGLX.
I'm running completely without an xorg.conf file (woohoo!)  Here's what I'm seeing:

I've bolded the sections in question.  Here's a little more info:
[shane@shane-arch ~]$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
[shane@shane-arch ~]$ lsmod | grep kms
drm_kms_helper 21971 1 radeon
drm 126588 4 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
Any help would be appreciated   I'd like to get compiz up and running.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I've googled around and searched through the forums but haven't been able to figure this out. Oh and I'm using the open source ATI driver, not the catalyst one from the AUR. So I'm quite stumped and am getting tired of having to boot into windows to stream stuff so any and all help (as always) is greatly appreciated.

Alright I'll definitely be giving that a look over, however I'm still unable to output to my 32inch TV in my room. I mean it's definitely something with the TV, just no idea what. I've tried xrandr on the smallest resolution (like 640x400 or what have you) and still no go. My best guess is that it has something to do with the resolution, when the computer boots considering I can see my BIOS on my 32 inch but for the life of me I am just baffled. Anyways sorry for the late response, been busy with work and the like. So just to sum up so far; HDMI video out works on our 55 inch LCD @ any resolution but doesn't work on my little 32 inch. As always all help is greatly appreciated, especially you jlindgren for sticking around this long lol.

  • Updating Radeon HD 3200 Graphics Driver - Help Required ASAP

    Hi guys.
I have a question regarding updating the graphics drivers (Radeon HD 3200) on my Lenovo X100e ThinkPad. I cannot & it's doing my head IN!!! I'm stuck using the latest version Lenovo released on their website on 2nd July, 2010 (v8.663.2.1-091216a-093974C-Lenovo)!
I've had no problems compiling & installing the latest ATI/AMD drivers on my Linux (BackTrack v5) partition, so I do know a little about computers.
I've tried methods recommended here & by others shown on the following website:
    http://glob.lokety.com/enable-hardware-acceleration-on-lenovo-x100e-for-better-video-playback/
Basically, no matter what version driver I try to update to I get the following error message (when attempting to manually update via Windows Device Manager):
“Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device"
“Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it [ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics]”
“The driver selected for this device does not support this version of Windows...”
If anybody out there has a solution they can share I would be super appreciative; what little of my hair is left is in a most precarious situation...
Thank you all for your time. I hope you all had a very merry Christmas & wish you all a happy new year while I'm at it.
    Simon (mezcal)
PS. sorry to cross-post on both the ThinkPads Support Community & the Lenovo Community forums – I'm just hoping someone out there has an answer for me – no doubt being so terribly simple & straightforward that I'll look like a noob S.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Dear The_Solutor,
Thank you kindly for your quick reply, & what's more:
    IT WORKED!!!
My x64 bit version of Windows 7 (Pro) was starting to get a little bloated, etc. so, using Acronis True Image, I dropped a fresh & clean image of Win 7 SP1 & immediately updated the HD 3200 Graphics driver (after unpacking the installer you provided). This is certainly the best (computer related) event of my new year. THANK YOU.
I'm not sure if the problem was a result of my Windows installation becoming corrupted over time or (more likely) a result of incorrect driver usage.
Sometimes ATI's (AMD) driver selection method can be a little confusing (for notebooks like the X100e). Can you walk me through the choices you made to get to the correct download? For example, on their 'support - driver download' section of their website, what do you choose for the following 'drop-down' selection boxes:
    1. Component Category
    2. Product Line
    3. Product Model
    4. Operating System (obvious even to me!).
Thanks again mate. I really appreciate the time you took to solve my problem.
    Happy New Year,
    Simon (mezal)

I also found good (?) information, or at least a clearly-explained article, here. After reading it, UVD appears as the AMD's counterpart of NVIDIA's VDPAU for video acceleration.
What I'm not sure about, is:
    -  Does it support video acceleration? I'd like to offload video processing to the GPU, but am not sure if my card and the open-source drivers support it or not. Wikipedia's article about VDPAU states it comes from NVIDIA, but then it says it has an open-source implementation.
    -  What has gallium to do with it? What gallium drivers should I enable in mesa? And what about DRI drivers?
    I configured mesa as follows:
    ./configure --prefix=/usr \
    --sysconfdir=/etc \
    --with-dri-driverdir=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri \
    --with-gallium-drivers=r600 \
    --with-dri-drivers=radeon \
    --with-llvm-shared-libs \
    --enable-gallium-llvm \
    --enable-egl \
    --enable-gallium-egl \
    --with-egl-platforms=x11,drm \
    --enable-shared-glapi \
    --enable-gbm \
    --enable-glx-tls \
    --enable-dri \
    --enable-glx \
    --enable-osmesa \
    --enable-texture-float \
    --enable-xa \
    --enable-vdpau
Not sure if I missed something, though.
I am very confused about how Linux manages graphics, and what all those layers are for. DRM, DRI, VDPAU, VA-API, gl, gl3, xv, xvmc... it's a mess!
    Thanks in advance.

The feature matrix might help. The easy part to answer is that the 3D driver is split into two parts: DRM which is part of the kernel and DRI which is in userspace and comes from the mesa package.
Xv is an Xserver extension supported by pretty much all drivers. Found in the DDX (xf86-video-*), it uses features of the card to speed up the display of video (but not decoding). It can either do this by using the "video overlay" or creating a shader.
Now if you want to use Xv but also offload decoding to the card, you need a video acceleration API. The ones to choose from are XvMC, VA-API, VDAPU in increasing order of feature support. They were developed by Xorg, Intel, Nvidia respectively but anyone is free to implement them. I don't think it's correct to call UVD a counterpart of VDPAU. UVD is a bunch of registers on newer AMD cards. And if you sent bits to those registers in the right way, you can implement VDPAU.
The other way to implement VDPAU (say if the documentation for UVD registers was not released) is to use gallium. There is a gallium state tracker which can still do it at the expense of being slower. It is a hack whereby you convert video frames to polygon textures and make the OpenGL part of the card think that it's calculating part of a 3D scene when really it's decoding video.

  • [SOLVED]Radeon R9 280x Glamor problems (video tearing, error messages)

When switching from Catalyst to xf86-video-ati, a few problems occurred.
I tried to enable EXA rendering by setting the option in my Xorg.conf, but I got the message that EXA isn't supported on my card and that Glamor will be used. I'm fine with using Glamor, but using it gives me some weird problems. For instance, when I play a video, the top 5% of the screen has horizontal tearing, as explained in this bug report: https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/sh … i?id=78717
It seems unfortunately that there is no way to solve the video tearing problem with Glamor. I tried playing my videos with mpv and vlc and with different video output options (xv, gl-hq, gl, vdpau), but they all gave horizontal tearing in the top 5% of the screen.
When playing a video or running glxgears, I get the following error messages:
radeon: Failed to allocate a buffer:
    radeon: size : 0 bytes
    radeon: alignment : 4096 bytes
    radeon: domains : 4
And this goes on and on when running the program.
There are also messages appearing in dmesg when those problems occur:
    [ 1587.499789] [drm:radeon_gem_object_create] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (0, 6, 4096, -22)
[ 1587.516597] [TTM] Illegal buffer object size
[ 1587.516606] [TTM] Illegal buffer object size
    My full xorg.log:
    http://pastebin.com/Jpi3wF7H
I understand that solving tearing is not a priority now with Glamor, but at least I want to get rid of the error messages. Any ideas?
    lspci reports my card as:

Sorry for the late reply, but I happen to have recently built a similar setup (Arch Linux + Radeon R9 280) and I'm also getting the "Failed to allocate a buffer" (of size 0) messages whenever I run something that seems to use the radeonsi driver (i.e. games, 3D, shaders...). However, I do not have the video tearing issue, and I don't get the messages when playing a video either (well, at least not with VLC, which is the only software I've tried for this). I can't really help you more with the video tearing issue, but I filed a specific bug report for the "Failed to allocate a buffer" messages here :

Thanks for reporting the bug! I hope that there'll be a solution for both of us.
Good to hear that you don't see tearing. It only happens on fast sequences.

  • [solved] Radeon/Ati and Xorg 1.9

    Hi,
since I've upgradede my ati driver (xf86-video-ati) and X to X 1.9 I cannot start my X session, because of the following issue:
Failed to map cursor buffer memory
    Fatal server error:
    failed to map pixmap -22
XIO fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server 0:0
In the very beginning after having upgraded, I obtained in addition the error of unknown synaptic devices (mouse and touchpad), but in one of the forum threads it was solved and thus I could fix it.(sry link is missing)
But the one error above is still unsolved, and hinders me starting X. Mr. Google couldn't help enymore.
Downgrading is not possible, because of the missing packages...
I hope one of you can help me get X on the screen.
    best,
    L-K
    [EDIT]
I compiled from git and now xf86-video-ati-git works well. maybe the version in [extra] differs from that git-version in AUR.
    Ty for reading.

The kind people from the IRC channel suggested I add this bit at the very end of the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file (instead of "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf" - tho it would've probably worked that way too):
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us, ro"
    Option "XkbVariant" "std"
    Option "XkbOptions" "grp:caps_toggle, grp_led:scroll"
    EndSection
Apparently it works. I just have to hold AltGr and press s, q , a, i, t, etc to type ș â ă î ț etc. But how do I set it to ; { } ] ' ", etc, like the default behaviour in Windows... ? I would like them to correspond to this layout.
Because this is not the "standard" ("std") version...
I may have to edit the "/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ro" file to map them.
    Unless there's a better way ?

  • [solved] [radeon] HDMI audio stopped working, video too fast

I'm using the `xf86-video-ati` driver, which worked fine up until when I upgraded Arch, after some weeks of not doing so. Now the HDMI audio is silent. Also, when I set the audio to output to HDMI in the GNOME sound menu, videos are playing faster. I tried setting the `radeon.audio=1` kernel commandline, but it didn't help or even change anything.

  • [SOLVED] Radeon HD 6310 on AMD E350 APU

I currently have a Raspberry PI running as a download/XBMC server with Arch Linux ARM connected to a TV through HDMI. This worked well so far, but I wanted to take some load off the RPi and bought an AMD E350 APU with an integrated Radeon HD 6310 GPU. Unfortunately, I'm not getting the video/audio out to work properly with Arch Linux x86_64.
Here is what I have done so far (reboots between appropriate steps):
Followed the Beginners' guide as for any other install.
Installed alsa-utils, mesa, mesa-demos, xorg-[server, server-utils, xinit], and created a user and added the user to the "audio, video" groups.
Installed the open source "xf86-video-ati" driver, added "radeon" to my MODULES array, found no other modesetting options, regenerated initramfs, and added a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf file for good measure. I also added "radeon.audio=1" to my kernel parameters and regenerated the GRUB config file.
With that setup, I tested the sound with the following:
    # aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC662 rev1 Analog [ALC662 rev1 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC662 rev1 Digital [ALC662 rev1 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    # aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
    # speaker-test -c 2
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
where the aplay command didn't return an error, but also did not play any sound. Note that a test to the analogue sound did in fact work.
In addition to the sound not working, I wanted to test if the video will work with XBMC with
    # glxinfo
    Error: unable to open display
Thinking that maybe something went wrong, I reinstalled most of the above mentioned packages to no avail, and also checked that the "radeon" module was loaded, which it was. I then uninstalled the open source driver, removed "radeon" and "radeon.audio=1" from the appropriate files and regenerated GRUB and initramfs.
Next I decided to try the proprietary driver (reboots between appropriate steps):
Added the Vi0l0 [xorg114] and [catalyst] repositories
Installed xorg-related packes, catalyst-[hook, utils, libgl] and checked that "fglrx" was added and blacklisted "radeon".
Ran "aticonfig --initial" and checked the file.
Testing if the display works after verifying that the module loaded with lsmod:
    # fglrxinfo
Error: unable to open display (null)
At this point I started to doubt the drivers working with the hardware, so I booted up with a live openSUSE 13.1 USB (kernel 3.11) with the "radeon.audio=1" option enabled. Testing the display here (cropped):
    # glxinfo
    name of display: :0
    display: :0 screen: 0
    direct rendering: Yes
seems to work fine, along with HDMI audio.
I have then clean installed Arch again, reinstalled mesa, xorg and xf86-video-ati and re-added all the parameters and such. Also tried some random things like adding "amd64_agp" to the modules, "radeon.pcie_gen2=0" to the kernel parameters in any attempt to get it to work, but nothing has yet.
At this point I'm stuck. Any help in getting this to work will be greatly appreciated.

Hello andy123, thanks for the response.
As far as I know, I do not believe the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf file is necessary, but I tested the system with and without it. The current contents is just
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Radeon"
    Driver "radeon"
    EndSection
As you mentioned, I would also prefer using the open source driver as I've often read and heard that it has better support than Catalyst.
Regarding the groups, I did in fact test the system with and without my user being in the video and audio groups. I do not start Xserver explicitly in a desktop environment, but rather just test for an available display via glxinfo. This test works well, as XBMC does the same check to see if OpenGL support is available, will not run if it is not available and prints the same error as glxinfo. No Xorg logs are available in /var/log/, maybe because it does not even begin to start due to lack of display.
The analogue channel is unmuted, and the default HDMI channel does not show a 'Master' or any other channel for that matter except S/PDIF. From a friend I've heard that this is correct, as the HDMI volume can not be set like this. The alsamixer UI is the same as on the openSUSE live disk, which worked fine.
I haven't installed XBMC on the new installation again, but will do so now and see if that forces X to write some logs.

  • [solved] Samsung SCX-3200 prints garbage

    Hi,
Some months ago I got a Samsung SCX-3200 mono multifunction printer. I installed samsung unified driver from AUR I think it was v3 and printer worked.
After the driver got updated to v4 I think my problems started. Sometimes when printing a document I only got pages with garbage characters in the first line on the whole page. Recently I am unable to print anything, always getting the same result, smileys, hearts etc on the first line. printing test page is the same.
I installed windows to another HDD in my desktop computer and no printing issue occurred. Also I installed samsung unified driver to another computer (running Arch), used the same USB cable, but garbage text was all I got.
Then I tried the official samsung package / installer and everything was the same.
Unfortunately there's no samsung unified driver 3 package  in AUR anymore.
Please help me get my printer back.

  • [SOLVED] Radeon HD 3850 / Radeon open source driver

    Hello,
My laptop broke and for some time now I am using my old desktop pc (2008), on which I have arch linux and manjaro, dual booted.
My problem is that if I want a long video (over 20 minutes my whole pc is becoming slow and the screen becomes sluggish, mouse too. At first I thought that the ram is not clearing but I 'sudo rm -rf /tmp/' and check htop and ram is not full. CPU is normal so I believe it has something to do with the graphics card.
Please help me track the source of the problem!
If you need any more info please let me know!

  • [SOLVED] Radeon, black border (doesn't fill entire screen)

Updated yesterday. Now I have a black border of unused screen space along the edges of my monitor. It's an AMD system using the integrated card (785G (RS880, Radeon HD 4200)) and it's connected to a TV. I've tried DVI to HDMI as well as HDMI to HDMI, both with the same result. The KDE settings say that it's displaying 1920x1080@60Hz and so does the TV. I'm using the radeon driver as is, no xorg.conf or anything. I've tried searching but so far I've only found stuff related to overscan with the catalyst driver. I'm a bit of a n00b so please be patient if I ask stupid stuff
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi,
got the same prob. I found this:
"It's the new "underscan" code added recently to deal with cases where an HDMI-attached TV has overscan set so users can't see the menus at boot. There's a RANDR mechanism to turn it off" -> http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25129
Try: xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set underscan off
    (set Output to used one)

  • [Solved] radeon module freezes system with dpm enabled

    Hello,
I have been running my Radeon HD 5770 with xf86-video-ati (1:7.5.0-1) for quite some time now without any issues. Yesterday, I upgraded mesa and my system started to freeze with a black screen during boot. Blacklisting the radeon module allowed me to boot my system. Attempting to load radeon on a running system will also result in a black screen and a frozen machine. I was not able to recover any log output from the radeon module. Downgrading mesa did not resolve my problem.
Booting the kernel with radeon.dpm=0 seems to work. The fan noise is reduced by using dynpm for power_method. However, it would be nice to resolve this issue!
I'm running 3.18.6-1-ARCH. The mesa update:
    [2015-02-07 11:52] [ALPM] transaction started
    [2015-02-07 11:52] [ALPM] upgraded mesa (10.4.3-1 -> 10.4.4-1)

    [2015-02-07 11:52] [ALPM] upgraded mesa-libgl (10.4.3-1 -> 10.4.4-1)
    [2015-02-07 11:52] [ALPM] upgraded mesa-vdpau (10.4.3-1 -> 10.4.4-1)
    [2015-02-07 11:52] [ALPM] upgraded youtube-dl (2015.02.03-1 -> 2015.02.06-1)

I also experienced this problem when booting the Arch live cd. While the system was frozen, I moved my monitor's DVI connection to the other connector on my card. Suprisingly, the system became unfrozen and continued booting the live cd. Now the issue seems to be gone and I can boot from my harddisc with radeon.dpm enabled.

  • [SOLVED] Radeon HD 7690m support

I have an HP laptop with two GPU's, a radeon hd 6490m and a radeon hd 7690m. I have catalyst running fine with switchable graphics, the 6490m runs fine as expected but the 7690m shows up as 6000 series. I am aware that support for the 7000 series is not fully available and i was curious when i could expect support?
Last edited by BennyBolton (2012-08-03 12:54:55)

ok so i ran some tests. I was really using glxgears to compare performance. I get about 850 FPS with the 7690m and 2500 FPS with the 6490m so i assumed the 7690m wasn't working properly and i had read that it had bad support on linux, but after reading your post i decided to run more tests. Darkplaces running quake gets 70 FPS on the 6490m but it gets 140 FPS on the 7690m. Also quake4 gets 30 FPS on the 6490m and 50 on the 7690m. Does anyone know why glxgears is getting bad scores?

  • [SOLVED] Radeon (Xorg) Resolution

I recently upgraded my monitor, from HD to UHD, and my graphics card so it was capable of powering the display. I tried to use the Catalyst driver but it crashes and so I've gone back to using the Radeon driver (I was using it with my previous graphics card and was content).
I followed the instructions, first for installing the Catalyst driver and then removing it, and getting the Radeon driver working with KMS. My machine boots, and I get Slim and and login to Xfce, but I am limited to 1024x768, which is a little far from the 3840x2160 I'm expecting.
My kernel prompt doesn't have any vga setting, I'm not (knowingly) blacklisting the Radeon driver, and I'm now not sure what else to try; I've seen a few posts in the forums which have given me some leads but so far nothing has worked. There were a few posts mentioning EDID settings/firmware but I'm not too sure what was meant, so I'm going to have a further look into that, but if anyone is able to shed some light I'd be grateful.
    Thanks
(The Catalyst driver did, despite occasionally crashing, display at 3840x2160.)

  • [SOLVED] radeon/radeon dual GPU halp:)

Hey all, I just got a new laptop with radeon/radeon hybrid gpus and I'm a little lost as to how to go about setting anything up. The hybrid wiki only really mentions ati/intel, but I've got both my cards on the radeon driver.
I'm pretty sure arch has both cards going full tilt because the laptop is getting pretty hot and I can change the backlight in /sys/class/backlight/ for either video card and they both change the screen brightness.
    I'm also not even sure which card is which;
    # lspci |grep -i vga
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 9647
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M Series]
I though both cards are 6400m series, the dedicated is a 6470M and I thought I remembered seeing the integrated card as a 6400-series as well on windows when I first got it, but I'm no longer sure.
    here they are in lshw
    description: VGA compatible controller
product: Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M Series]
vendor: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI

I was thinking of picking one of the cards and writing an xorg.conf to try and disable one and enable the other at x launch, but before I do that does anyone have any words of wisdom or anywhere I should look for guidance? Also is it strange that even with both video cards going on the opensource driver compositing is very slow?
EDIT: ok so I've fixed the compiz and I did try a xorg.conf that specifies one of the devices; this is over my head though. Is specifying the card in the xorg.conf enough to keep one of the cards idle?
EDIT2: nah both cards are still burning full tilt, lm-sensors has both going ~70-74 degrees like they're crunching my math homework
    thanks all.

Hey Pres, thanks for the reply
Yea nothing in the BIOS, and sorry specifying by BusId is what I meant by using xorg.conf, so I do have only one specified, though with both cards on the same driver I am unable to blacklist one of them.
I have looked a bit at the ati wiki for powersaving but it doesn't really seem to matter what I do to the cards in terms of power profile.. switching from profile to dynamic didn't seem to change much, nor did specifying a low power profile for one of them. I'm going to install an opengl game when I get home and see what I can see when switching between profiles, but so far in terms of temperature the power profiles didn't seem to have much effect.
Edit: is trying to put only one of the cards on the prop driver possible/a good idea? Could I then blacklist the open source driver for the dedicated card?
