[SOLVED] Reading sent messages in Mutt

Hi, I've set up mutt mostly according to the wiki article. I can't seem to be able to access sent messages. The sent messages appear as a single file in the Mutt folders listing... I have a file called "sent" in my ~ which is a plain text file that contains all my sent messages. I can read it by catting it or by opening it in vim, but I'd like to be able to read it straight from within Mutt.
When I try to open it in Mutt, it just tells me to not delete the file, and that's all.
Any ideas?

I assume, you use mbox_type=Maildir as written in wiki, is it right? Don't forget to back up
Sorry I seem to have failed to elaborate. The sent mail seems (I'm not sure, I'm new to this) to be saved as mbox file rather than maildir... All sent mail is just saved as a continuous stream in a single _file_.
EDIT: Oh, sorry, I missed the part where you say mbox_type. Ok, I'll try to convert the sent mail to Maildir format.

  • Unable to read sent messages

OK. Another email question and I know this has been answered previously but I wasn't able to find it this time. My sent emails are reading as "The message from Sandra Xxxx has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." I've actually deleted months worth of emails hoping this would open up some room in my sent box folder, but I still get the same message. Can you let me know how I can retrieve these sent messages?
    Thanks. Sandra

What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac). If POP, you probably have the problem described in the following article:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
As you can see, letting a mailbox grow indefinitely is a really bad idea. If you’re just starting to experience the problem, doing what the article suggests might work. If you’ve let the problem to become worse over time, however, it may be too late to solve it as described in the article, but you may still be able to fix it as follows:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate Sent Messages.mbox and move it to the Desktop.
    4. Open Mail. A new empty Sent Messages.mbox will automatically be created within the account folder, and this will allow you to continue using Mail normally while trying to solve the problem.
Although Sent Messages.mbox appears to be a file, it’s actually a special kind of folder (a package) that contains several files. Ctrl-click on Sent Messages.mbox and choose Show Package Contents from the contextual menu to see the files it contains. Of these files, mbox is the most important and is where all your messages are stored. What’s the size of that file? Depending on its size, you may or may not be able to directly import it back into Mail in the next step.
An Incoming_Mail file may also be present, in which case it might contain messages that Mail couldn’t transfer to mbox. Incoming_Mail is also a standard mbox file like mbox proper, just named differently, and can be imported back into Mail in the same way.
    5. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes and follow the instructions to import the Sent Messages.mbox that’s on the Desktop. I’m not sure what the import options available in Mail 1.x are, but you should choose Other / Standard mbox or something like that, so that Mail looks at the mbox file only (and Incoming_Mail, if present) and ignores the other files in the package.
If Mail doesn’t let you select Sent Messages.mbox in step 5 because it’s a package instead of a plain folder, rename Sent Messages.mbox to just Sent Messages (i.e. remove the .mbox suffix) so that it becomes a normal folder, and try again. You cannot do this directly in the Finder because removing a suffix by normal means causes the Finder to hide the suffix instead of renaming the file. To remove the suffix from the name, you must do File > Get Info (⌘I) on the file and change the name there.
If the mbox file is too big for Mail to handle it, however, you’ll have to break it into smaller pieces. You can do that with an MBOX Breaker Script available at Allan Sampson’s website, or with Emailchemy. The former will ignore the Incoming_Mail file that I mentioned previously, but you may try importing that file directly if it’s not too big or just ignore it if all your messages are in mbox. Also, if you removed the .mbox suffix from the name of the mailbox, you may need to add it back again for the script to recognize it.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Mail shuts down when reading sent messages

Hello I have problem with mail on 1 account if I try to open a sent message it will shut down mail, does anyone know how can this problem be solved?
I have Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Mail version 4.5
Starnge enough this I mac is a claune of my earlier macbook which does not have this problem.
    Thank you for your help.
    Antonio

I have no idea what solved the problem but mail works just fine right now.
So I guess it was either the internet connection (which I still doubt as I was able to send messages) or it was the server of my mail provider.

  • Mail 3, smtp, IMAP: sent messages are not saved on server

    Hello,
I had problems using Mail 3 after I upgraded to Leopard, so I used Thunderbird for the time being. With the update 10.5.1 I tried again: most problems solved BUT: sent messages are not saved on the server in mailbox "Sent".
Some background: I deleted the folder "<User>/Library/Mail" and "<User>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist" and configured Mail from scratch.
To be sure: I still have Thunderbird installed, and when I send with Thunderbird: a copy is placed in "Sent".
Another thing I noticed: it takes more than a minute to send from Mail 3 and a few seconds when I send from Thunderbird. I have another Macbook Pro with 10.5.0 installed: same problem with sending.
    Any help is appreciated.
    rene

Well, be stumped I did all that, but to be sure, I did it again:
I have a lot folders with subfolders and they are shown under my account name.
I created a new folder "test" in my IMAP account and designated it to be the new "Sent" folder. It replaces my previous Sent folder in the group Inbox, Drafts, Trash. My previous Sent folder now appears under my account name as a "normal" folder.
I send a message and the Activity monitor says: +"Delivering message: copying message"+. After a minute Mail is done. I check my (new) "Sent" folder and it's empty. I double check in webmail: it's empty.
So I go to the Finder and look in my IMAP folder: <user>/Library/Mail/<IMAP-account>/test.imapmbox and there is no folder "Messages", only Info.plist.
Then I try to move a message to the "Sent' folder: for a minute the Activity moinor says: Copying messages: copying message" and then Mail prompts: +"The message "testing" could not be+
+The connection to the server mail.hicetnunc.nl on port 143 timed out"+.
So it looks like Mail has a problem with the default "Sent" folder: it cannot copy messages to that folder at all! Aha!
But then I try to move a message to a "normal" IMAP folder: same thing! Mail cannot copy to any folder!
In both instances Mail says: +"The message "..." could not be be moved to the mailbox "..."+
+The connection to the server mail.hicetnunc.nl on port 143 timed out"+
Last thing: I try to move a message to a folder in the same account again. But in the process I quit Mail. I open Mail again and Mail is performing pending operations: copying message. After a while Mail prompts: +"Operation could not be completed. (MFMessageErrorDomain error 1028.)"+ and crashes... I open Mail again and it tries to peform pending operations. Again: an error message and Mail crashes. This keeps going on so I delete the whole account and set it up again. Nothing's changed...
I can receive and send, but sent messages are not copied to the "Sent" folder and I cannot move messages around within a IMAP account. But TADA!!!: I can move messages from account to account.

  • Can't see sent messages

When I try to read sent messages, I'm getting this message:
The message from [name] concerning [subject] has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
I've tried quitting Mail, restarting, and it still is a problem.
    How do I fix this?

This error message indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox has reached or exceeded the recommended size limit or the mailbox has some corruption.
The recommended mailbox size limit for Jaguar or Panther Mail is 1GB and for Tiger Mail, 2GB.
An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size but is more likely to occur depending on the number and size of message attachments contained in the mailbox and especially as a Jaguar or Panther mailbox approaches or exceeds 1GB in size. This has been significantly reduced with Tiger Mail.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Sent Messages.mbox.
Move the Sent Messages.mbox to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new Sent Messages.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when sending the next message with this account.
This will allow the Mail..app to function properly again and not risk losing any new messages sent with the account while working on the old Sent Messages.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old Sent Messages.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each here.

  • Duplicate Inbox after trying to solve Gmail duplicate sent messages...

.. was trying to solve the problem of duplicate sent messages with Gmail email on the BB Curve 8350. In following instructions from this message board, I instead ended up with duplicate INBOXES. Now, when I unregister and re-register my gmail account on my phone, it creates a new icon. This has resulted in my original problem being multiplied by four. What I mean is, now I have duplicate sent messages in TWO DIFFERENT INBOXES. Originally, my gmail account went to the main Inbox on the phone. I cannot delete the main message system.. HELP!

It seems I found a bug!
I now understand what happens, although don't know the reason. The symptoms are caused by the "Auto-Expunge" feature on Gmail. I disabled it and fooled around the options and this is what I discovered:
    When I set "the message will be archived when disappear from the last visible folder", the message is archived whenever I try to move the sent messages to any other folder than the "Sent" one;
When I set "move the message to trash when disappear from the last visible folder", the message is deleted and moved to trash whenever I try to move it from the "Sent" folder to any other.
In other words, for some awkward reason, Lion's Apple Mail is not handling folder-to-folder operations and Gmail thinks that the messages has been removed from the last visible folder and does with it whatever it was instructed to, which is either to archive or move to trash.
Since by disabling Auto-Expunge Gmail waits for the client to take the action, it seems that Apple Mail is sending the wrong command or sending it on the wrong timing.
I wonder is Apple is aware of this.
    Any suggestions?

  • Sent Messages can not be read in MAIL, why?

Up to an hour ago, I could view all my SENT messages in MAIL, suddenly I am getting a message saying "The message from [account] has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
    But I AM online!
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

This indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox has some corruption and/or is over the recommended size limit.
The recommended mailbox size limit for Jagaur or Panther Mail is 1GB and for Tiger Mail, 2GB.
If your OS detail provided is accurate (10.3.9), do the following:
Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Sent Messages.mbox.
Move the Sent Messages.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new Sent Messages.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when sending the next message with this account. This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again while working on the old Sent Messages.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages and not risk losing any new messages sent with the account.
Control-click on the old Sent Messages.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each here.
This information is required to determine the next step to take to recover the existing messages.

  • Why sometime sending a text message reads sent as text message instead of Delivered?

Why dose sent messages read as sent as text message instead of Delivered? and this person has an iPhone too

In order for a message to be sent as an iMessage, both parties have an active data connection. If one or both of you doesn't, then the message will be sent as a regular SMS (assuming you have it set that way). Only iMessages will give you the "Delivered" update. SMS do not.
    Best of luck.

  • I need to know how to open the messages app without reading a message someone sent to me..

I have my read receipts on because I like for people to know that I got their messages (most of the time).. But somebody texted me and I don't want to read their message. If I tap the messages app, then it will automatically pull that message up. Is there any way I can set my phone to where I can click the messages app to create a new message without reading the one this person sent to me?

Turn off Send Read Receipts.  Then open the Messages app.

  • Rule to mark sent messages read

As some other people have noted in the forums, since I've upgraded to Leopard all my sent messages are getting marked as Unread for some reason I gave up trying to understand and/or fix.
So I was thinking of creating a rule to mark all sent messages as Read.
    How could I accomplish that?

don't know if this would work but you could try in mail>preferences>rules: "date sent" "is less than" and choose "1", then perform the following... "mark as read".
rules are applied to incoming messages so that new rule would not automatically apply to your sent mailbox. you would have to go to your sent mailbox once in a while, then select the emails you would like the rule to be applied to, then go to the menu message>apply rules.
if you have more than one rule and do not want other rules applied to these sent messages, then before applying the rule, you would have to go to mail>preferences>rules and mark as inactive the other rules, leaving only the above one as active.
a bit tedious workaround i admit and maybe other users may have a more elegant solution.
    hope this helps

  • What is the difference between the green text bubble that reads "sent as text message" and the blue text bubble reporting "delivered?"  Is the green text bubble not delivered?

what is the difference between the green text bubble that reads "sent as text message" and the blue text bubble reporting "delivered?"  Is the green text bubble not delivered?

iMessages are sent using Apple servers, using either WiFi or Cellular data. They can only be sent to/from iDevices or Macs that have the Messages app. SMS messages use the cellular network. Both methods can deliver the message to the recipient.

  • IMessage - how to show if someone received and read the sent message?

    Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to see when I sent a iMessage to someone if they have received it and "read" it.  I know in settings there's an option that shows others when I have read their messages.  Do they have to have this turned on in order for me to see this?

Yes, as far as I know, they do. I enabled the setting on my phone and my husband's because it's nice to see when he read my message. (I doubt he pays attention to that feature, but it's important to me.) I haven't used iOS with anyone else yet. Apparently none of my iPhone owning friends have updated to iOS 5 yet.

  • How do I read/receive messages that were sent to me while my phone was on airplane mode?

I recently went away camping and turned my phone on airplane mode so I wouldn't receive any charges. But when I take my phone off airplane mode it shows I have no new messages showing. I was wondering how I can receive and read those messages once I take it off of airplane mode.

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Sent Messages are not allway saved

I use Mail with several imap account and for the last few weeks I recognized
that the emails I did sent were not allways saved in the 'sent messages' folder of the corresponding imap account. They are sent but they just dissapear, also on the imap server itself.
Deleting Envelope Index and restoring the sent folder did not solve this strange behavior.
It seems that sometimes it depends on wether an attachment was added to the mail or not.
But the sent messages _are saved_ when I first press the 'save as draft' button and right after that press the send button.
    Any ideas?

I've had the same problem for a while, even before Leopard. It definitely occurs more often when sending bigger messages (i.e. with attachments), and on slower connections (cell card, or even shaky wifi). Always unsettling when I notice it, and seriously frustrating when a Send fails and I've forgotten to Save as Draft.

  • Why can't I see all my "Sent" messages in webmail?

I've gone to My Settings/Mail/Save Sent Messages numerous times and have selected the radio button "save".  Yet, when I go to look at my sent mail in webmail I can only see some of the sent messages.  I think it may be the ones sent via webmail and does not include messages sent from my verizon email account hard-wired at home (DSL).  I'm using Windows Mail on a Vista computer.
How can I configure my account to see ALL sent messages when using webmail?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Any mail you send from a pop3 client will not appear in your webmail Sent folder. If you want all of your sent messages to appear in webmail, then you have to send all of your messages from webmail.
