[SOLVED] (reason found) X freezing randomly

Hi there guys.
I have got a problem with my x server freezing 'randomly', as the topic already says.
I am using arch on my new laptop (Dell Latitude E4300) for some days now and encountered several problems which I all managed to solve but not this one.
X never used to freeze on my desktop so I do not know what might be the reason. At first I thought it might be the energy saving measures of the laptop and turned them all off. Sitting next to and observing it, everything seemed fine after that. When, after 20mins, screen dim turned on (thought I turned it off, though..) I just accepted it and thought about the problem as solved. When I moved the mouse to go back to work at the laptop, I noticed it was frozen again! I could still move the mouse but I was not able to click anything, use the keyboard or anything else. Restart X does not work.
I have to use the power button to turn it completely off in such a case.
Now another thing is: It is highly unprobable it is a energy-saving thing only because this morning when I had FF running and wanted to start Konqueror to check something, X froze too (no mouse as well, this time). Same yesterday, I do not remember what I did back then, though.
I posted my xorg.conf here.
(I know it is pretty messed up, if you do want to do me a big favour, tell me what to change, please! )
If you need any other output to be able to give me a hand, just let me know.
Thanks in advance, I hope you can help me back on the road
Regards
edit: added the lspci -nn output here
Using the xf86-video-intel driver Version 2.4.3-1
edit2: After deleting poverdevil, arch didn't freeze this morning when in idle mode.
But it happened to freeze again when I was at university and wanted to shut it down.. pressed on "shutdown" -> freeze.
I still do not have the slightest idea, what it might be. Any help is still appreciated!

I am not using compiz-fusion but the kwin desktop effects. I will try to switch them off but I read that the problem still occured for others which also turned their 3D-effects off.
I decided to give this bug report a try and posted my problem there as well because it is getting more and more probable to me that this is a driver's problem.
And there, in the bug section, I also read that there is a new xf86-video-intel driver, version 2.6. if I remember it right. Maybe this will be the fix.. ?!
edit: dakor, you really seem to be right. I turned kwin desktop effects off and it did not freeze yet.. Weird stuff.
But that does mean it is a video-intel driver bug, doesn't it? I am not marking this as solved, yet..

  • Safari, Camino freezing randomly across sites with great frequency.

All internet totally functioning, ichat, mail, streaming video etc.
But for some reason Safari is freezing randomly - some websites load fine,
others freeze halfway through or don;t even being to load.
I tried Camino - but the same problem happens so it isn' Safari specific.
I've dumped the cache, plist etc and restarted and repaired permissions to no avail.
Anyone know what the problem could be? It's sort of come out of the blue over the past couple of weeks and I'd REALLY like to fix it!

this is happening to me too. I am on an intel iMac, and it is happening in Safari, and also in Camino and Shiira to a lesser extent.

  • After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I've been having some problems lately that I didn't have before recent updates.
My desktop will freeze randomly and my only option is to switch to a VT and enter multi-user mode with `systemctl isolate multi-user.service`. X doesn't crash though. My Gnome Desktop just freezes entirely, but the mouse pointer continues to move around just fine. When I enter multi-user mode, Xorg.0.log says that the server exited successfully.

I think i got my problem, but i don't know how to solve it: after much troubles i found out that whenever i have an SMB connection with a machine that then goes down/disconnect from network without me unmounting the share BEFORE it, then BOOM, everything freeze.
I noticed this only because i was sharing a directory with my brother and noticed i had the froze as soon as he got disconnected from the network: so i asked him to power on that machine and.. magic! My machine unfroze instantly!
But now, how to fix that?! Is it due to my /etc/fstab? Does this really matter with nemo/nautilus mounted shares? This, however, depicts the machine in question (the one that, disconnecting from the network, caused my own to freeze)
    //themachine.local/shared /home/username/mountpoint/ cifs noauto,guest,username=myname,password=mypassword,uid=1000,gid=100 0 0
At last I found out what's my problem, hopefully your situation is similar so that we can work out a solution on this one.
THANKS! I'm quite sure this is the reason gnome shell freezes for me as well. I was mounting my box.com cloud with this entry in /etc/fstab:
    # box.com account
    https://www.box.com/dav /home/abtz/Box davfs rw,user,noauto 0 0
If anyone has an idea for how to fix this, I'm all ears. For now, I'll just remove the entry from /etc/fstab.
I'm running vanilla Gnome, with only the Frippery shutdown menu and battery remaining extensions installed.

  • CQ40 Freezes Randomly

    I am currently having a CQ40 - 324TU running Windows 7 x64
The drivers are downloaded from HP site
    4GB RAM
The problem is it freezes randomly
Randomly as in it's hard to predict when it freezes. It can run for hours without freezing or they freezes the instant you enter windows. Once it freezes, you have to force power off the com to restart.
Just last Saturday, it froze for 8 times during my 3 hours exam.
I suspect it's the Motherboard Problem but I sent in for service for 3 times, they did not detect any problem.
Anyone of you have this problem with your CQ40s?

It's the RTM version btw, i.e. the final one and I installed the same things in an identical unit, that one turns out fine. (Identical as in everything is exactly the same to the submodel number, except the RAM, that unit has 3GB RAM)
I am not sure whether most freezes are by software but I think what JRGibbs1990 referring to is a Hang, where the program stop responding. A freeze is the who computer freezes, i.e., it will not respond to external input at all, which means nothing will happen if you press anything, unless and press and hold switch button to cut power.
And I do not think it is the software problem, firstly, the windows RTM installation works on all the other coms I use. Secondly, it even freezes with purely windows (without additional softwares), thirdly, it worked on an identical unit.
Something odd about my machine is when i install the drivers found online in HP site, there is one particular one (Realtek PCIe Lan or somethng like that), once install, it will cause the machine to hang upon loading windows or before the login screen which interestingly, that problem does not occur with the identical unit.
I sent in to HP for repair, I even talked to the customer service manager in HP Singapore. This is what he said, they test computers using HDD preinstalled with designated OS with all the drivers installed. And for CQ40 (at least for my unit), the designated OS is vista and they put it for many days, it did not seem to have a problem. They do not have HDD preloaded with Windows 7 x64bit to test (which I personally do not buy this reason). If that is true, there is something wrong with the service provided.

  • My windows 7 keeps freezing randomly

Hi I know there were similar questions asked, but I already tried some things like registry cleaning software, and freezing still keeps comming back so I feel like I need a specific and interactive help.
So my windows freezes from time to time, today it was every couple minutes while browsing internet through firefox mostly, and single freeze takes from several seconds to minutes.
Right here for a similar problem I've found suggestion to collect minidump files:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/b9c932b4-5926-4f92-b186-c4f90bb86583/windows-7-keeps-freezing-randomly?forum=w7itproperf
I can do it too, if there is someone here to listen :) and will further help me continue solving this. Thanks.
    Tom

Ok, so I got some freezes just moments ago and went to collect minidump files. When I tried this:
Click “Start”, type “%SystemRoot%\Minidump" (without quotation marks) in “Search” bar and press “Enter”.
    ...it found no elements matching.
Yesterday I've done everything like suggested here:
    1. Click "Start", input "SYSDM.CPL" (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press “Enter”.
    2. Switch to the "Advanced" tab and click the "Settings" button under "Startup and Recovery".
    3. Under "Write debugging information" section, make sure the "Small memory dump (128KB)" option is selected.
    4. Make sure "%SystemRoot%\Minidump" is in the "Small dump directory" open box and click “OK”.
...except where it sais 128kb I had only option 256kb
so what is going on?  no minidump folder under my windows folder...

  • Fresh Install of Windows 8.1 on HP Pavilion a4313w freezes randomly

I've done four fresh installs of Windows 8.1 on the HP Pavilion a4313 Desktop PC in our home and it always freezes randomly. Even in safe mode, it freezes. I've done hardware tests with BurnIn Test 8.0 and everything including the hardware memory is fine. Antivirus is installed and it's completely updated with Windows Updates. Once I installed the 32-bit version of Windows 8.1 and it still froze. I performed a fresh install, because it would hang sometimes with Windows 7.
Anyways, I am more then ready and willing to post more information or test results upon request. Anyone have suggestions?

    Hello @buddhapunk36,
I understand that your computer running Windows 8.1 keeps freezing and you have run the hardware tests and it comes back okay. I would suggest that you try installing the original Windows 7 that came with your computer and see if the freezing continues. If it does continue the the issue appears to be a physical issue. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html.
If the issue does not continue then your system may not be compatible with Windows 8.1.
I would like to thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Macbook Pro (mid 2007) freezes randomly

    Hi all,
Last week my Macbook pro (2007) started to freeze randomly. 2-3 years ago I added an SSD (64 gb crucial M4) and replaced the dvd drive for an 500 gb HDD. The configuration worked perfectly until last week. My macbook sometimes works for a couple hours and sometimes it freezes just after 30 minutes from startup. Sometimes during an freeze I can use the programs that were open. For example when reading an PDF I can scroll 1-2 pages down/up. When I scroll more than 1-2 pages Preview freezes as well.
I have done the following things to exclude some frequent problems.
Set my fan speed to 6000 rpm to exclude an heat problem. The system freezes also with 'normal' temperatures.
Checked my SDD & HDD on file consistency and repaired the disks with disk utility (booted from Mac Os X install cd). Disk utility reports that the disks are okay. I also checked with Techtool pro on bad blocks and smart status. All seems to be all right.
Checked my RAM with tech tool
    Reset NVRAM
Checked console for error messages. There are no messages at all between a couple of minutes before a freeze and a forced turn off/on.
I haven't installed new software recently.
Last time when my macbook froze, I had an terminal window open. In this window I could execute some commands, only the most basic. Top, sudo, shutdown etc. didn't work. I could navigate to all folders on both SDD & HDD. But I couldn't see any files, only folders. That is strange right?
I think the next step is to change the hard drives for an other (new) one, to exclude hard drive problems. But before I open my Macbook I was wondering if anyone has other ideas to solve this problem.
    Thanks for any help.
    Bauke

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "I/O error" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application. Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.

  • X freezes randomly, screen turning black or flickering

    Hey everyone,
I'm having this annoying issue where X freezes randomly, I can't tell exactly when it happens. But when it happens, the following occurs:
    - Screen is frozen, sometimes turns black, sometimes turns black and reappears, but still frozen.
    - Cursor and sound (e.g. music) still works
    - When switching to a new tty (CTRL-ALT-F6), I can log in and restart gdm using
    sudo systemctl restart gdm
    - When I'm in the other tty and trying to switch back to the graphical view, I get stuck completely, not even switching consoles works now.Reset is the only option from there
    - Blindly restarting gnome-shell doesn't work
I somehow have the feeling, it happens more often when I physically move my laptop, but thats just a gut feeling. It also happens often when my screen is locked and I try to log back in.
I found this bug report, but its quite old and that doesn't help me: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14594
Any help would be very appreciated, its really annoying to lose my work so often.

  • Re: Tecra S10 and S11 freeze randomly

We have several Tecra S10's and S11's. They freeze randomly during the day. Some even twice within half an hour, others spread it out through the day.
The Tecra's are all Windows 7. Some have 64 bit, others a 32 bit installation. After the Windows 7 installation we removed additional software we don't need, like McAfee, Toshiba goodies (Assist, Tempro, etc), Ebay, etc. After that we activatie Office 2007 and we Microsoft-update the the laptops. So far so good.
However, after a week or two just simply working in Word causes the Tecra to freeze. Even ctrl+alt+del is not working. The Tecra has to be forced to shut off by holding the power button down.
Does anybody recognize these 'frozen moments'. It's very anoying.

    > All notebooks are in an Active Directory domain Windows 2008.
Thats the reason why I asked if notebooks are connected to some company LAN.
I saw somewhere on this forum that similar issues were noticed in the same situation. Notebook was somehow blocked when was part of domain.
Probably some data exchange between notebook and server was responsible for this blocking and freezing issue.
I really don't know what to say. If you have several notebooks with the same problem I recommend you to contact nearest authorized Toshiba service provider and ask for help. You know they have contact with Toshiba people and if there is something serious they can help you with this.
I really don't believe some long discussion here will help you much.
If your local administrator cannot find out what the problem can be than you need professional help.

  • HP Elite 7100 freezes randomly

Mostly brand new (about 3 months old) HP Elite 7100 mT (i5 750, 4GB RAM, ATI 5450) freezes randomly.
Tried reinstalling OS with clean Windows and fresh drivers of HP website and/or INTEL/AMD accordingly, still happens.
When it freezes, the windows log doesn't write anything, only that the subsequent boot was unplanned (meaning it's not kernel level, but hardware level).
I used diagnostic software to stress-test the computer but temperatures remain within normal parameters and stress-testing it does not make it freeze - it is apparently completely random (about once a day or two).
Anything I should try or do before I start the agonizing process of trying to explain the local HP support what's wrong so that they can take the computer to the lab and try to reproduce it to no avail?

T-G, EVGA is a good manufacturer.  However, the card is 9" in length.  This may present some space problems.  As for temp problems, I suggest seeing if nVidia makes software to allow you to control the fan speed.  My XFX card is ATI.  ATI has software (Catalyst Control Center) to allow me to adjust the fan speed and overclock the card if I desire.

  • Lenovo G450 Freezes randomly

    System - Lenovo G450
    intel C2D 2.2 GHZ
    4GB RAM
    320 GB HDD
I had it for about 6months now. For the past month or so it started freezing randomly when left open for more than an hour.initially it was once in 2-3 days but now it seems to be doing that more often. everything just freezes mouse, screen, keyboard even "Ctrl Alt Del" wouldnt work. i have to force the shutdown by long pressing the power button. it does that randomly some days it wouldnt freeze at all. searching through forums found that it could be power management issue. i tried changing power management options and disabling "sleep" without success. I hope its not  a hardware/motherboard issue. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    These are the common problem
    a) Most of the freezes I have experienced are due to graphic card problem. This is IMHO a intel-lenovo, or Nvdia-lenovo driver problem.
    b) A second common source of problem is overheating of the graphic card, especially during intense movie, gaming.
    c) A rare but possible problem is the window networking (especially window xp) trying to find the domain, IP address, network cache or whatever. The issue was so random that I don't think there was a solution. You will experience this if you ever try to connect to a network and find a disk drive, it just 'freeze' till the correct IP and window network name is 'resolved'. Some googled solutions shows that you can set the search time to faster, eg 1 second instead of the default.....with some compromise of course.
    My suggestion is
    a) You can try process tamer, a freeware at  http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/proctamer/  What this does is to reduce the process that is hogging the system and at least give you back some control from the 'freezing'. This works great for me when using XP. You can also see which process is the culprit
    b) From Bios set the CPU Stepping to be 'balance' instead of maximum performance for AC or battery operation mode.
    c) You can download an official window 7 that can be tested for 30 days before activation is required. Set a 30GB partition and install this into that partition. When bootup you can choose XP or window 7. This is for you to use window 7 to see if the freezing still occurs.

  • Logitech mouse freezes randomly

    Sigh
Recently I got alot of problems with mac, I don't know if it's snow leopard or mac itself.
This is one of the problems. I have a logitech vx nano mouse. It works perfectly in my old windows laptop. It works okay in the first few weeks in mac. But then the mouse start to lag. I googled the problem, and many people say it's the Logitech control panel, it's crappy. And some recommended to use a third party software like Steermouse. Steermouse works for the first few days, now my mouse start to freeze randomly and lag too...
I remember in google, I found something about that there's no new or updated driver for the vx nano on snow leopard.
    So anyone got any ideas?
    Thank you.

  • WORBENCH FREEZING RANDOMLY USING IOTECH Parallel datashuttle

We have been building special pupose torque machines for the oil industry using initially ISA daq modules and later IOTECH DataShuttle modules via the parallel port. Since we changed to Windows XP we have a long term unsolved problem. The workbench experiment simply freezes randomly either after a few minutes or some hours. The worksheet has been unchanged for this application for many years. We tried to alter all settings we could to improve it ie, changing the port settings to advanced and allow any interrupts etc. but no resolution was found.
Is there a better driver (Currently 32.dll) ? Can we change more around on the PC BIOS to accomodate this better ? We would have abandond Dasylab would it not have been for some machines are already delivered and operating with this snag.

    Hi Alexander,
Thanks for the further information. Given that the DAQ card you are using is a non-NI product, i.e. IOTech's, the driver will either be IOTech's, or DASYLab-specific. As such it is not an NI product supported directly by National Instruments.
Having said this, you will have to contact either IOTech's, or DASYLab's support centres to request assistance.
    DASYLab support: http://www.dasylab.com/index.php?action=home
    IOTech support: http://www.iotech.com/kb/search_ext/index.html
In my opinion, given that you are operating under a new operating system (XP), I would suggest you contact IOTech first to see if this is a known issue, and if they have a fix.
Apologies that we could not help directly. If there's anything we can do then please let us know.
    Best regards,

  • 1 month Toshiba satellite A505 s6033 freezing randomly and blank screen on startup

    Hi,
My Toshiba satellite A505 s6033 start freezing last night when I was surfing the internet. After pressing 5 seconds or more the power button the computer turned off.  After that I start it back on but all the lights on body worked except the display.
After few more attempts I pushed arrow down and the power button the display turned on, but the freezing problem is back. So I thought that is a windows problem and I used the recovery partition to restore the state out of the box state. But the display is randomly blank when I push the start button except the other lights, and after restoring the laptop still freezing randomly in or during the windows is loading.
When I turn it on in safe mode, it works perfectly fine. When I turn it on normally, it freezes almost right away.
I bought this computer from bestbuy, but I am an Romanian citizen (sorry for my English), my question is : I can use the International Limited Warranty in my country ? Or what should I do to fix my laptop.
    Kind regard,
    Valentin

First, sorry because of my English, it is not my language and it's been a while since I had to used it.
This is happening to me, when I bought the laptop I had a few times that it froze but I thought it was something I did, and it happened once or twice in 3 months, for 9 months, maybe 4 times in the last month, it began to increase.
Then I thought it could be the temperature, and after a while, 2 months, I didn't had time, I bought a external cooler, but it didn't work... By this time my warranty expired... And thinking it could be dirt, I opened the back, but just by removing it I saw it was clean and put it back, I did nothing but opening... And again started looking for what it could be... Yes, I tried looking here, but I didn't find this topic that time, and now that I don't have the warranty I found it...
Any one here could help me? What should I do? Is there any way to fix it without buying a new video card?
I live in Brazil so its difficult for me to buy parts, I bought the laptop in the states when there, here the hardware are expensive... But if I have, I'll buy... If I have to buy a new one, could you tell me if there is a new one that I can buy that has little difference in price for the one I have and it's better?
PS: Toshiba from Brazil didn't helped me, I just spoke with then...
I thank you for any help!!
