[SOLVED] Reduce heat with Toshiba L300D

Hi everybody.
As many of you may have noticed, summer is here. As I live in quite a hot place, and my laptop's fan doesn't work very well under 3.X kernels, I got quite sat of a constant 74°C temperature while I'm doing nothing more special than typing my work. All the more, because I have lots of work and I have to spend almost all day by the laptop during these days, and I quite dislike this behaviour.
I could force the fan to constantly spin at full speed under the 2.6.32 kernel26-lts, which is indeed the very reason why I came to arch linux in the first place. Yet it doesn't boot anymore, I get redirected to a bash-like shell from which I suppose I should mount filesystem, but I'm not quite practical with these emergency shells and I couldn't solve the issue yet.
If I try to run mkinitcpio -p kernel26-lts, I get the following error message:
[~]$ sudo mkinitcpio -p kernel26-lts
Adgangskode:

Googling and searching the BBS about it gave me no result. Would somebody be so nice to help me?
I apologize with my head in dust if the answer was easily accessible, I just couldn't find it, and I'm really full of work so I must give up for now.
Thank you everybody!

Thank you! Most weirdly, even if mkinitcpio is not run correctly, the kernel26-lts now boots, which has never happened since a long time. Of course it doesn't work as it should, as I can't get to X with radeon nor with fglrx, but it looks like this issue doesn't affect me anymore :S
I'm quite puzzled
As for now I'll try making use of catalyst and xorg111.
Ok, for what it matters, by making use of catalyst-345k [with catalyst-generator 12.4] and xorg111 I could boot a functioning 2.6.32 kernel which allows me to reach a good [for this laptop] 65° temperature without having to use twm or the sort. I'm sorry for the disturb this topic might have brought to you and I hope that anybody who has a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300D laptop might find it useful in some future.

  • Issues with Toshiba Satellites and Western Digital WDC HDDs

As much as I want to thank Jerry Lippey for helping me several times with issues regarding my boyfriend's A665-S6095 laptop, I am DONE with Toshiba.
For the FOURTH or FIFTH time now (it's so bad I've lost count) this satellite has crashed while using a WDC Scorpio Black HDD. I have gone through FOUR HHDs in the last year and a half. I am not joking. NO ONE has time to diagnose and solve this many computer issues in such a short amount of time unless they are a paid techinician.
The last time the HDD failed I tried to get WDC to send me the non-AFT drive that I had bought, but they told me that the BEKT version of the BPKT I bought was "not in stock". For almost a month. And yet it came back in stock on Amazon and one or two other stores online. So when I called back to say WHAT THE HELL, instead of asking me what I wanted them to do, they just decided to send me a larger drive with AFT, as if that would soothe my aggravation.
But honestly, I don't see how this can all be WDC's fault. I mean, if you compare the number of forum posts referencing satellite versus non-satellite models, there is no way that number is proportionally equal to the number of satellite versus non-satellite models sold. I wish I had known how terrible Toshiba is before he bought the laptop, or my mother bought my brother a different satellite model. I'd have told each to shoot themselves in the foot instead.
My boyfriend was trying to copy pictures from his Galaxy Note II onto his laptop, but when he plugged the phone in by a usb/micro usb cord and opened windows explorer, the computer froze.
I shut it down manually, and since then it has not been able to boot at all. BIOS recognizes the drive make and model, but nothing will load; the screen goes black after the Toshiba welcome screen and nothing happens. I tried booting from both a win7 recovery disc and the 1st Toshiba recovery disc I made with the laptop; the former won't load at all and the latter goes through the "windows is loading files" progress bar, then the "microsoft windows" progress bar, brings up the cursor and stops doing anything. I can move the mouse, but the light on the HDD indicator illuminates for about 5 seconds then shuts off for less than a second, over and over. For a fraction of a second I can see an error code reading something like "No Emulation Type 00" before the recovery cd loads. I don't know what that means exactly.
If I hadn't had previous issues with Toshiba TVAP software having compatibility issues with Windows, or if the laptop would freeze part way through installing windows updates I wouldn't have trouble blaming only WDC. But clearly Toshiba has major issues (at least) with Satellites, and except for the one person on this forum who knows what he is talking about - and let's be serious, we can't blame him for not being able to answer EVERYTHING posted on here - their tech support $^(($ B@!!$. Just like their products.
The fact that the only answer I've found is to only replace Toshiba HDDs with OEM HDDs is complete bull.
Sure, it is possible that the way the laptop is used causes some of the issues I've had, but FOUR HDDs? Really? What else in a laptop can go bad that could possibly help to kill off the drive? What else could possibly contribute to the agony I have to go through to keep this laptop running?
Time to go back to work, now that I've spent over an hour trouble-shooting and writing this rant.

Hi I'm fairly new to the forum. I'm sure Jerry will have a reply for you. 4 failed HD's is unreal. I 'm sure you know why HD's fail. I know you are very aggravated, but I would just like to ask a couple of questions. How are you testing these failed HD's. Seatools has two great free programs seatools for windows and seatools dos. Also I'm very curious about your Anti-Virus program. Viruses are really getting tough, and can wipe out your HD in seconds. If your OS gets corrupted, windows will no longer boot. I'm going to post some things that I'm sure you already know. I also would like to know how your boy friend uses his lap top. I live in a retirement village and I fix computers for free. I have see some really bad stuff. I have had to restore a couple back to factory because they were so badly infected. Power surges can really do a number on a HD. I'm going to post the link to a bootable seatools dos. It will be a ISP file and you will need to burn it to a cd. Test your drive and see what happens. I'm sure Jerry will have a comment for you. He's pretty smart.

    Why do hard disks fail?
Because hard disks are mechanical devices, they are subject to wearing out, even if you treat them better than your own children. Around 60% of hard drive failures occur through predictable mechanical failure, with the remaining 40% of failures occurring through misuse. Hard disk failure might occur if any of the following happens:
    Your computer is bumped or jostled while it is running;
    The electric motor which allows the platter to spin fails due to bad bearings or other components;
    The filter on your air intake gets too clogged or the filter isn't working properly;
    Extreme heat while running causes the electronic circuit board to fail;
There is a sudden power failure while the disk is writing.
    Types of hard drive failure
There are two main types of hard drive failure - physical and logical.
Physical failures are often due to a failure of the electric motor or the drive itself - the moving parts. They can also happen because of a major head crash (caused by your computer being dropped or jostled while it's running).
Logical failures come from corruption in the file system. If you've accidentally deleted an important registry entry or formatted the drive improperly, or if you have a nasty virus, hard drive problems will occur. The BIOS will recognize the drive, but it won't boot.

  • Toshiba L300D-SP5802 Volume Key / DVD Drive problems

    Hi
I'm Enrique from San Juan, Argentina
    I've bought a Toshiba L300D-SP5802 on october/november 2008
Everything was fine until now. I'm having two problems.
    1) Phisical volume key isn't working. This is not very important. I can manage it with a hotkeys software, etc.
    2) The most important problem is that the dvd drive isn't reading anything. After I put the cd or dvd, it begins to spin, then I hear the little sound of the dvd drive spinning, but then it slows down, then the sound starts again like it if were going to read it, but it doesn't.
I suspect that the dvd drive must be dirty because mom smokes a lot when my father uses the notebook besides her. (Please confirm this to me)
    My main question is:
Should I send the notebook to warranty? Should warranty cover both problems? or should I send to repair?
As far as I can remember, warranty isn't void. I'm still on time
Thanks a lot for any advice you can give me.

Your concern of smoking is valid, obtain a good disc cleaner for the optical drive and run it, this will clear up the laser lense. somewhat.  Check via the Device Manager that the CD/DVD is listed there.  If it is not than you will need to: Right click on Computer, scroll to Properties, open same and see if CD/DVD is listed in your hardware, delete same if there. Look at the toolbar and it will be the last icon will read[install/add new hardware check].  See if the system can restore the drive.
NOTE: sometimes the door to the hard drive is pulled away from pin connector housing inside, close the door to ensure it is full with the unit housing.
Also, ensure that there is proper air flow, nothing cluttering the exhaust vents, and fan unit is cleaned pf those dust mites.
WARRANTY concern-it must be related to a defective part or non-operation component which would cause a failure.

  • How to reset the BIOS to solve a problem with DVD burner on Satellite P100

    Hi
I am trying to reset my cmos to solve a problem with my dvd burner.
I was trying to run an old game that I own that was protected by starforce and ran starforce nightmare with has made the device completly inoperable.
After much searching I have heard to reset cmos.
I have treid through debug and nothing happend. I don't really want to open up the laptop and pull the cmos battery out or leave it for a month until the cmos battery runs out.
Is there any advice on what I should do.

    Hi
What you want to do is simply not possible you said that you had some problems with PCs and you fixed it.
That's great. But a PC is simply different and cannot be compared with the notebook
    > I was trying to run an old game that I own that was protected by starforce and ran starforce nightmare with has made the device completely inoperable.
According to your statement above you CD/DVD drive issue could be related to the installed starforce nightmare. I dont know this but I presume this software/application has changed or destroyed the CD/DVD drives firmware.
Sorry but I see only one way to get it working again You have to contact the ASP in your country. Maybe a technician would be able to rescue the drive
PS: your Satellite P100 PSPA6A series seems to be a Australian series therefore you should use the Toshiba Australian page if you need some drivers or BIOS
    Bye

    Hello
Simple problem - don,t know how to solve it.
With Premiere CC when I try to do a selection (click... drag... release the click) very often it stop way before the end of the move I'm swinging the Magic Mouse. I taught that the mouse clicking was defective and went to get a new Magic Mouse after lots of frustration. Today, I have an edit to do it it does the SAME thing !!
    I was like ????#$%?&*(???
Opened all the lights and taught I've trow the new mouse to the garbage and was using the defective mouse again... no !! - ??
Actually, the bran new mouse is doing the same thing. What I understand after investigating on the motion and watching carefully my fingers !! -  is that when I click I have to keep my finger at the EXACT same place on the mouse... drag and release and it's fine. If I click by pushing on the mouse and my finder is moving of a 1/32th of a millimeter, it will release and my selection will be to redo. You can understand my frustration ! - 75$ later... same problem, but I know that if I click with about 5 pounds of pressure and trying to pass my finger through the plastic of the mouse, it you stay steady and make it !
The problem is that scrolling is enable while clicking and it bugs.
    How to disable it ??
Simple question - can't find the answer !

    Helllooo !?
sorry but the Magic Mouse is just useless with the new Adobe Premiere CC and since I'm not the only one but can't find answer this is really disappointing. This mouse is just fantastic and now I have to swap from a USB mouse to the Magic Mouse every times I do some editing. My USB mouse if hurting my hand somehow and I want to got back to the Magic Mouse asap. Please - for sure there is a simple solution !
    Thanks !!

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.

  • Satellite L300 Windows 7 back to Vista with Toshiba Recovery CDs

    Hello all,
I have a Toshiba Satellite Series L300 (2008 model) laptop which originally had Vista but I installed Windows 7 Professional on it. I now wish to return back to Vista.
I noted that the 'Windows.old' folder created on the C:/ drive seems to be missing a lot of files and could have been altered since the date it was created. I think it would be too risky to use it to recover back to Vista.
So my question is can I use my original set of Toshiba Recovery DVDs to get back to Vista? I want to do a full factory reset to recover my system to when it was originally purchased with Vista.
If the Recovery DVDs is not an option and the only was is by using the Windows.old folder, if it is lacking important files could it leave my system corrupted? I am sure there is a way to get back to Vista by factory restore somehow.
    Comments and feedback urgently required!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello sauza
Wait a moment. You mix two different things. If you want to install original recovery image it can be done on two ways:
    # Using created recovery discs DVDs
    # Install image using HDD recovery method (recovery image saved on HDD)
    >Ok but how do I use the Toshiba recovery disks to reset my computer back to Vista factory settings?
This question is related to method 1.
    >I press F8 at start-up---> select Repair computer---> select my language----> Then it gives me Windows 7 Options to only Restore by Disk Image which I created at a earlier date.
This description is related to method 2 and has nothing with installation with Toshiba recovery disks as you wrote in your last posting.
Method 2 can be used if notebook has factory settings. After own OS installation recovery image is not available anymore and recovery image can be installed with recovery discs only.
I hope you understand now how it works.
If you have more questions please let me know.

  • Biggest issue with Toshiba

I bought a $3,000 tv 65L9300U and have received zero advice on how to get 4k content.   The biggest issue with Toshiba beyond its crappy smart tv features is the fact that Toshiba has horrible support.   I waited on hold for 45 minutes only for them to tell me that I can only access 4k content through the USB port, which if Fat32.   The issue with fat32 is that you can get clips over 4 gigs, which is a huge problem since 4k content is huge. I put a huge 4k file on my exfat32, which can hold more than 4 gigs, but it doesn't work through USB.
If anyone has any advice, let me know.  I was thinking of purchasing the NUVOLA  NP-1.  Anybody have any better suggestions?

Currently, 4K video can only be viewed via HDMI as far as I know.

  • HT1918 How do you solve an issue with the card? I don't get the option of 'none' :(

How do you solve an issue with the card? I don't get the option of 'none'

I had this exact same problem with the new iPhone I bought on 1/4/13. The walk through they provide on how to do this is useless because it fails to explain that if you are already having the problem of not getting the "None" payment option with an Apple ID then you will need to create a completely new Apple ID.
I had to do this 7 times since I bought my iPhone on Friday until this morning to figure out how to finally be able to use the Home Sharing option in iTunes to put my music collection on my brand new $500.00 iPhone. Pretty pathetic if you ask me but since it made me so angry I want to make sure other know how to do this so you don't get as upset as I did.
#1 If your current or soon to be "old" Apple ID is not providing the option for "None" as a payment option then you need to make a brand new one. But you have to make it specifically how I tell you.
#2 You will need to use an email address that has not already been used for anything related to a previous Apple ID. You might need to make a brand new email address.
#3 Open iTunes, then open iTunes Store (upper right corner of iTunes).
#4 Click on App Store (upper center of screen).
#5 Scroll down the screen page until you see Top Free Apps on the right side.
#6 Choose any one of the FREE apps.
#7 You should either get the option to create a new Apple ID box, either that, or it will pop up with some kind of disclaimer and then it does the create new Apple ID.
Either way just create a new Apple ID when it gives you the option to and then when you get to the page that looks like the payment page the "None" payment option will finally be available.
Note: You will still have to fill out the information on the payment page. As long as you choose the "None" option it will not request any credit card information.
#8 You will be sent a confirmation email to the new email account. Just follow through with what ever it tells you and viola now you can use your Apple Device.
What a pain in the keester, eh?

  • Easier and better ways to solve current problems with Acrobat?

Is there no better and easier way to solve the problems (installation, re-installing and crashing) with Acrobat? I really think that the ball is in Acrobat's corner right now, because I should not (for example) need to deactivate and re-activate my subscription in order to get AcrobatPro XI to work on my computer, let alone deinstalling an older version that (for now) does work, risking that in the end neither of them work. I need the (great) AdobeCloud applications to do my work as a freelancer, and I really cannot afford this kind of trouble with my applications, nore loose time repairing them. These are difficult times as it is.
    Regards,
    Marc

Sorry, I can't. When I installed it there was no message that said I had to deinstall the old version first, and with other Adobe CC applications there had been no trouble at all, so I installed it with The previous version still on my computer.
After installing, neither of them would start up properly, so I deinstalled version XI, after which the old version worked again, but my Adobe Application Manager does not let me download the XI version a second time, so I cannot try again.
    Regards,
    Marc

Could you provide a specific description of the behavior that occurs when you launch Acrobat XI now?

  • Dissatisfied with Toshiba support due to dead pixel

Poetential buyers of Toshiba products beware. Toshiba offers very little support. All they do is try to weasel out of warranty repairs. After owning 14 toshiba laptops, for myself and my business, I will never spend another dollar with Toshiba.
I have a custom P750. 10 days after receiving it, the motherboard fried. Instead of offering me a replacement unit, I had to wait several days for a box, mail it off, wait for the repairs, and wait for them to mail it back. I couldn't drop it off at the local Toshiba repair facility. Actually, I could, but if I did that, I would be responsible for the cost of repairs. I have no clue what logic there is to that, but there you go. After that 3 week ordeal, I finally got my machine.
Fast forward to this weekend. A pixel burns out on my screen. My warranty is up in 2 weeks. So begin the repair process. I am astounded when the lady informs me that Toshiba will not fix it. She says "we don't fix screens that only have I dead pixel" and "One pixel does not affect the machine's performance". Well pardon me, but it sure affects me looking at a black dot on my screen 24/7. I ask to speak to a supervisor, she puts me on hold, comes back and tells me she talked with a "level 2 technician" who informed her they wouldn't fix a screen with a dead pixel. Again I ask to speak to a supervisor, so she tells me I'll get a call back.
So an hour later I get a call back from a "supervisor" who tells me they will not fix a screen with a dead pixel. I try to explain to him, that pixel makes the screen defective, and I want it fixed under warranty. If I'm selling this machine, and somebody asks me "Are there any dead pixels?", I'll have to say yes, and lose money in the process. He tells me again "we don't fix screens for a dead pixel". As I try to explain to him what a warranty is, he cuts me off and tells me he spoke with someone, and they've determined that pixel is the result of physical damage, and therefore not covered at all. ?!?!?

First of all, how could you possible come to that conclusion without seeing it? Second, how did it go from we don't fix screens with x number or dead pixels, to "you must have damaged it somehow, so we aren't responsible. Third, how it is possible for me to physically damage 1 pixel? Anybody? Cuz I can't think of anything. At this point to guy is rude, and I'm being rude back How dare Toshiba try to worm out their warranty by saying I damaged it. Gutless.
The "supervisor" then told me he was transferring me to customer relations. I asked to speak to his supervisor, but he said no and put me on hold. There I sat for 20 minutes. Nobody ever came on. Real professional. So, 3 calls later, toshiba agreed to send me a box to send it in, but they couldn't promise me they would fix it. THE WARRANTY IS THE PROMISE! So the Toshiba technician, who I'm sure will be fair and impartial, gets the final say so on my repair. Great. In 2 weeks when my warranty expires I expect my burnt pixel amount to exceed whatever is necessary to send it in. The difference? It'll cost me $400 for Toshiba to fix it.
Shame on you Toshiba. I've filed a complaint with the BBB, and I will be spending the night on social media expressing this story of how you treat your long time customers. Your "customer service" is a sham. Your business practices are shady and unethical. I will never spend another dollar on anything Toshiba Nor will anybody I know. Did I mention I work in lighting and video production? Now I know you will read this and honestly not care that you aren't getting my money or anybody I know's money. I'm just a little guy. But you keep this up and you will see a difference from the thousands of other people you treat as an ATM. Shame on you.
