[Solved] Removing 32bit

I have Arch running as 64bit and tampered with multilib and installed a few 32bit libs. I don't have much use for them anymore so I want to go ahead and purge all of the 32bit libs from my system.
Is it enough to disable the multilib repositories and remove all packages with the lib32 prefix, or is there anything else I should know to make sure everything is removed?

Are all 32bit or multilib packages labeled in a special way or can I find out in some other way?

White Macbook 2006 random shutdown solved removed cpu heatsink and more

I picked up a cheap macbook from a secondhand retailer for $300 and it regularly shutdown, froze, restarted as well as the grey kernel panic screen completely random no real pattern. I set about trying to solve the problem swapping ram and hard drive with my identical 2006 macbook (which I had similar problems with last year, fixed that one with a new battery connector cable). The ram and hard drive made no difference so I downloaded istat menus to see if any combination of cpu voltage, current and temperature were causing the random shutdowns. It seemed when the temperature reached certain values the computer would shutdown or freeze(around 30 to 50 degrees). I'd read on other forums about faulty cpu temperature diodes so I reapplied heatsink compound to the cpu heatsink and checked all the wiring for shorts but nothing seemed to solve the problem. I was ready to retire the computer and use it for spares for my other macbook when needed but I pulled the keyboard off one more time and tried something completely radical. This fix requires some forward planning and software installation but it has completely solved my Random shutdowns completely.

Ok this is not for the non technical person but it is quite a simple process with the right instructions.
This first step is very important install the software coolbook($10) and fan control (Free)( not smc fan control). Set up coolbook to operate the cpu at the lowest speed and voltage for both power adapter and battery(1002MHz and .95Volts). Remove the keyboard to access the computer logic board (instructions can be found at iFixit). Remove the four screws and two connectors holding the heatsink to the logicboard and gently lift the heatsink out (very important that you leave the fan screwed in and connected). Close the computer back up if you wish to test just gently connect the keyboard and loosly sit the keyboard back in. Restart and reset the pram immediately. Let the computer boot up and then open system preferences and configure Fan Control to your liking. So far no random shutdowns for over a week (was getting many a day previously.

[SOLVED] Remove / Uninstall 'supersonic' AUR package

Hi guys, I am setting up a home server which will have OwnCloud and some music streaming with Subsonic.
I read that Supersonic was a fork of Subsonic and was available on AUR so I installed that - though I cannot seem to get it to work, it starts OK but I cannot browse to MYHOMEURL:4040.
Anyways, I am now gonna install the actual subsonic from AUR but I cannot seem to uninstall supersonic using pacman.
Pacman -Rsnc supersonic
...returns 'error: target not found: supersonic'
This is my first time using Arch and of course AUR so I cannot see how to remove this package.

[solved]Removing applet from kdemod [my bad]

Well I had a clean install of KDE mod, tried to install xfce, then E, rebooted broke X, tried to troubleshoot, gave up reinstalled, messed that up, next day, reinstalled again.....
Went back to kde mod for now, but I have a question.
While trying to add an application to the panel, I accidentally added an applet "System monitor". How in the heck do I remove it, as it isn't nearly as informative as conky, or anything else for that matter...
Right clicking and removing isn't there, when I right click on it.

Hello, I am trying to replace freetype2-infinality with freetype2-ubuntu and I am getting the following error:

As far as I understand, especially since using the Clearlooks engine, everything works as intended. Clearlooks however has a 32bit version in
/opt/lib32/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines
I want to be able to use the nimbus theme everywhere. However I can't figure out how to make a 32bit binary with the provided gcc and moreover, where to put the resulting files.
Please help, it really murders consistency and renders 64bit Arch a real pain in the a**. I know about the pure 64bit stance, but honestly, there are some apps that are simply only 32bit.

Okay so... status update.
I really wanted to make Acrobat Reader work with the Nimbus theme.
I used yaourt in a hastily set-up chroot and build the package from the aur (fortunately you can cancel the actual installation). I then copied the pkg.tar.gz to my desktop.
The 32bit Gtk themes are installed in:
/opt/lib32/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines
I used the line from the AUR pkgbuild:
cp -rPf "$srcdir/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines" "$pkgdir/opt/lib32/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0"
So, on my system:
cp -rPf /home/dan/Desktop/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/ /opt/lib32/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/
after having unzipped the package - nimbus-0.1.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz.
The -r option means recursive, the -P option preserver permissions and the -f option checks if the destination file can be opened and if not, deletes it and recopies.
You will notice that in the above directory, you'll find 2 files - libnimbus.a and libnimbus.so
All the other themes only have the shared object file and the .a file is an archive as far as nautilus is concerned (can't open it, need ar apparently). Everything seems to work if you delete the .a file. I am not sure if the file is only appears with this theme, or with any theme installed this way.
So, finally, it worked. Acrobat opened and used the new theme.

So, it's bugged. The theme. Anyway, the tutorial should work just fine on any non-standard theme you need to use in 32bit apps. It could probably be automated a bit more and perhaps with a multilib gcc, you could do it some other way.
The point is you really need the libnimbus.so. The shared resources are architecture independent and the standard path will work.
Oh and I've given up on the nimbus theme itself actually. Care to suggest any good gtk theme?

[SOLVED] Compile 32bit Wine in x64 without chroot?

I was wondering if it's possible. Due to winetricks not working with x64 wine, I wanted to do a compile of 32-bit Wine without chroot. I need to apply patches, otherwise I'd just use pacman. I've looked but pretty much all topics I've found that are related are before Multilib was added to Arch and all require chroot. Thanks for any help.

Solved it by just getting multilib gcc, and downloading all the missing dependencies that caused warnings after ./configure with x32 wine

This is for precompiled from pacman. I have to do a fresh compile to be able to apply patches that will fixes games/software for myself, which usually requires a chroot to compile it in 32-bit, therefore pacman isn't an option.

You can use a chroot if you want to, or have good reason to... but myself -> i run a multilib system and i compile wine on every update (i just compiled 1.5.4 yesterday). I only use 32bit apps in wine, as well via my 32bit prefix.
If you decide to go the 'multilib' route, you could use package management in arch to compile/install wine ... there are a couple of patched versions of wine in the AUR, that you could use as a template. just download the tarball, extract it and modify it to use your patches / suit your needs, add your patches to the directory, fix checksums, etc and voila

there is one or two others, but they are very similar. either could work as a good template.

anyway, it basically comes down to either having a 32bit chroot, or running a multlib system.

[solved] remove grub timeout doesn't work

i am trying to remove the grub timeout by editing /etc/default/grub and setting grub_timeout to 0, but it doesn't work, is there anything else i should change?
p.s. should i run grub-mkconfig?

[SOLVED] Removing gnome

Hey guys and girls,
I have finally become comfortable enough in openbox that i am ridding my laptop of gnome for good!
I have run these commands so far
pacman -Rns gnome gnome-extra
pacman -Runs gnome
this has done a pretty good job of removing the stuff i dont need.
however, when i sudo pacman -Syu
i get 129 targets and 1039.67 MB to install because it wants to reinstall/update everything I've just removed...
how can I run pacman -Syu without reinstalling all that gnome junk?
I assume I need to edit my repo, but Im not sure how, and Im also not sure what to remove and what to leave..
any help at all is much appreciated

[SOLVED] Remove hard drive

I set up Arch Linux with a hard drive /dev/sdc connected to the computer. I now want to remove this hard drive completely. However on boot (using Syslinux with no chain for this hard drive) the system stops at the start job for that device.
If I plug the hard drive back in (connect sata cable) all works well again.
Where do I remove the device so that the boot process does not expect it to be connected.

[SOLVED] Remove completely Gnome and GDM (without messing MATE)

Hi everybody,
I wanted to try the new Gnome on my laptop and I installed it following the wiki with the command:
sudo pacman -S gnome gnome-shell gnome-extra gdm
I really like it (both the "standard" and the classic interfaces), but unfortunately it makes my laptop quite slow,
therefore I would like to remove it leaving only MATE on my desktop.
I noticed that Gnome partially conflicts with my MATE desktop (for example in a Gnome Classic session I would expect Nautilus
to be the default file browser, instead caja is opened), therefore I would like to know if there is some safe way to remove
all the installed packages without messing out with MATE.

[SOLVED]Removing gnome 3.x now that cinnamon 2.x no longer requires it

I've had gnome and cinnamon on my system for a while but am no longer really using gnome.
From cinnamon 2.0, there are various reports that cinnamon is independent of gnome (although I think it still depends on some other gnome-* packages).
I'm trying to remove gnome as a DE, while retaining whatever packages are required by cinnamon.
I tried running the following command:

Is there an easy way to remove gnome that ensures cinnamon isn't broken in the process?

Running 'pacman -Sqg gnome gnome-extra' produced a fairly long list, I removed the above 'requires <package>' packages from the list and ran pacman -Rns <long list!>
This threw up a few more errors, which were resolved by removing one or two more packages from the list until pacman would run
The following ran fine:
pacman -Rns baobab empathy eog epiphany evince gnome-backgrounds gnome-calculator gnome-contacts gnome-control-center gnome-dictionary gnome-disk-utility gnome-font-viewer gnome-icon-theme-extras gnome-keyring gnome-screenshot gnome-session gnome-shell gnome-system-log gnome-system-monitor gnome-terminal gnome-user-docs gnome-user-share mousetweaks mutter nautilus sushi totem tracker vino xdg-user-dirs-gtk yelp accerciser aisleriot anjuta brasero cheese devhelp evolution file-roller five-or-more four-in-a-row gnome-chess gnome-clocks gnome-color-manager gnome-devel-docs gnome-documents gnome-getting-started-docs gnome-klotski gnome-mahjongg gnome-mines gnome-nettool gnome-nibbles gnome-photos gnome-robots gnome-sudoku gnome-tetravex gnome-weather iagno lightsoff nautilus-sendto orca quadrapassel rygel swell-foop tali vinagre

As a result, I've removed about 950 MB of unwanted packages.

[solved]remove backslashes from file names?

Hi!
I have a lot of files that contain backslashes in file name, spread over many many folders.
How do I remove that character from all file names? The approaches / scripts / programs I usually work with can't handle the invalid file names (e.g. loose the '\' and then 'cant stat()' -.-").

edit: Argh... now I've got copies of half of the files without the "\" in the same folders, because copying did work on most but deleting only on some... also multiple \\\ because I messed up one sed line. and "echo" failed to warn me about the result, just dropping a few \ while mv didn't... or something. So confused.

Don't know what exactly I've been doing wrong, but it seems not to happen any more since I try to do stuff with "while, read, ${}" instead of "for, $(), echo, sed"

Yes, I know, that was the problem. That's why those stupid things always keep either disappearing or multiplying - I guess I just suck at keeping track of what program handles them which way and depending on what.

[solved] Remove words from file using a list variable?????

Is it possible with bash, to create a script that will scan a text file and remove words that are set in a list?
I have a file with words like so:
word1
word2
word3
I would like to be able to set script to scan file and remove only the words (and spaces left) that are in a list,
that is inside script. Is this possible???

[solved] remove packages from a txt file list

as the subject header says, I want to run "pacman -R" and have it read a list of packages from a text file.
Is this possible????
