[solved]Restore Alsa Levels

I installed alsa 1.0.18 from source, but now I don't know how to get it to restore the levels on startup.  I've already done "alsactl store" as root.  When it was installed from pacman it was just a daemon, but how do I do this know?
I'm pretty sure there is just a command I can put in my autostart.sh for openbox...but what command?
edit:  I managed to have the levels restored by adding "alsactl restore" to the /etc/rc.local

hi, i have done some reading and alsa-store and alsa-restore and meant to run at startup and shutdown, obviously to store and resume alsa level settings, but every boot my levels are at max.... i have alsa-utils installed incase anyone asks.

    just trying to work through this issue myself... ran systemctl --all to see if I could see anything "odd" and found this;
alsa-restore.service loaded inactive dead Restore Sound Card State
alsa-store.service loaded inactive dead Store Sound Card State
I can understand the restore being dead, but surely store should be "waiting"? i will do some more playing... hopefully post a solution incase anyone else has this issue...
    EDIT - in fact scrap that idea.... just checked the following;
    systemctl show -p WantedBy alsa-store
    WantedBy=shutdown.target
obviously, store is only meant to come alive at shutdown.... so either shutdown isnt starting it, or the service is failing..... more digging required....

  • [SOLVED] Load ALSA state on startup but do not save on shutdown

I found that my options here are either to leave /etc/alsa with no state-daemon.conf to use alsa-store.service and alsa-restore.service or to touch that file to cause alsa-state.service to take over. What if I want to load the same volume state every time the computer starts (in my case, load in with the speakers muted)? Would it be safe to remove alsa-store.service from /usr/lib/systemd/system and keep it under my root's home directory, or should I just write a service to mute on boot, instead?
Last edited by Thisguy_ (2014-09-04 17:50:17)

I tried running alsactl store at boot, but alsa-store.service does that on shutdown as well - therein lies the problem. I suppose a better way to do this would be to switch to using alsa-state.service and then add alsactl restore to my .xinitrc. I'll give that a try now.
EDIT: Didn't work. Running alsactl restore manually complains of a state lock on a file and does not mute the speakers.
Let me be more specific about these services - they're statically loaded. They execute themselves as the result of a file exist test on /etc/alsa/state-daemon.conf, and either alsa-state or alsa-store and alsa-restore take over - alsa-state if it exists and alsa-(re)store if it doesn't.
EDIT: That's what I get for not reading. Switched back to store and restore and changing alsactl restore to alsactl restore -f ~/.alsa.state after having generated that file. Here goes nothing.
    EDIT: Like a charm. Thanks!

  • [solved] Selecting init level 3 instead of default 5

I messed up my X, it freezes the computer on starting.
I think I can solve the problem, but I need to access to the system.
By default ssh is unusable since no network is activated (notebook).
The init level is 5 and it starts the freezing X.
I tried using the Arch installation CD but it freezes too after detecting my network card.
    I am using lilo...
How can I tell the system I want init level 3 (or 1) before it starts X?
    Thanks...

If you can boot to a console just do
    nano /etc/inittab
AS ROOT and change the runlevel to 3

  • [SOLVED] Microphone recording level is too high

    Hi,
since yesterday, I've got an issue with my headset's microphone (it's a QPAD QH-1339). The recording level is WAY too high, at 2 % level it's already starting to clip and I hear noise coming from the motherboard (a Lenovo ThinkPad T540p laptop). First I thought it might be a problem with PulseAudio but after testing with arecord I realized it seems to be ALSA related (same problem there).
Here are my sound related packages:
$ pacman -Ss alsa | grep Installiert
    extra/alsa-lib 1.0.28-1 [Installiert]
    extra/alsa-plugins 1.0.28-2 [Installiert]
    extra/alsa-utils 1.0.28-1 [Installiert]
    extra/pulseaudio-alsa 2-3 [Installiert]
    extra/zita-alsa-pcmi 0.2.0-1 [Installiert]
    multilib/lib32-alsa-lib 1.0.28-1 [Installiert]
$ pacman -Ss pulse | grep Installiert
    extra/libao 1.2.0-1 [Installiert]
    extra/libcanberra-pulse 0.30-4 [Installiert]
    extra/libpulse 5.0-1 [Installiert]
    extra/pavucontrol 2.0-2 [Installiert]
    extra/pulseaudio 5.0-1 [Installiert]
    extra/pulseaudio-alsa 2-3 [Installiert]
    multilib/lib32-libpulse 5.0-1 [Installiert]
    lsusb:
    $ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 0d8c:000c C-Media Electronics, Inc. Audio Adapter
ALSA and PulseAudio config files are stock; I've reinstalled alsa-lib, lib32-alsa-lib, libpulse, pulseaudio and lib32-libpulse already, making no difference. The built-in microphone seems to record just fine (apart from the horriblenot-so-great sound quality). It also seems to work somewhat if I set the recording level in the ALSA mixer to 100 % but Skype of course changes the recording level as it likes. When enabling the monitor (to hear myself) the sound quality from the headset's microphone is just perfect so I'm pretty puzzled what to try next.
If you need more information, let me know. Thanks in advance!

Try to set the capture level lower, you may do it by amixer or alsamixer or your systray applet.
I think your card is non fully set.
    What says
lspci -vnn |grep 'High Definition Audio'
Try to disable pulseaudio and remove the module. See wiki and in particular this section.
I know, their aren't the definitive solution, but we should have to toss a bit of straw from the haystack to find the needle.
Well, I should point out that it's an USB headset with integrated audio controller (was a bit unclear in my first post, sorry). The sound card integrated in the laptop works just fine but the integrated microphone is awful (in a non-ALSA, non-PulseAudio way ) so showing you the output from lspci won't help much I suppose. But at least it has a Mic Boost control.
Maybe it helps if I describe the behavior in the PulseAudio volume control in more detail.
For the integrated sound card, the input level behaves linear (I know it's logarithmic but that's not the point ). At 0 %, it's completely quiet, at 100 %, it's clipping. In between, everything's fine.
For the USB headset, 0 % is completely quiet, 1 % is clipping already, just getting worse until 40 % which is the ALSA base volume. There it's quiet but at least the volume indicator shows something. At 41 %, it's clipping again until 100 % which seems to behave like 40 %.
Now as Skype thinks that 40 % is too quiet it changes the input level (reasonably enough I guess). Too bad that anything BUT 40 % means white noise coming from the microphone...
Disabling PulseAudio is not really an option as Skype doesn't work with anything but PulseAudio. Besides that the problem also occurs with arecord.

  • Restore alsa settings at boot

    Hello all,
I'm using alsa with pulse and set my alsa config through alsamixer. However each time I do so, the settings are not restored at boot up.
I added @alsa to my daemon array as well writing the alsa settings as root with "alsactl store".
Might it be that I use pulseaudio which overwrites or handles the settings differently?
    Thanks for your advice.

I'm on the right track. Pulseaudio overwrites my alsa settings.
That means, when I run 'alsactl restore' manually after bootup, the correct settings are restored.
Now the question is, how can I restrict pulse to not behave like that?
This is my daemon array where I'm starting ALSA:
    DAEMONS=(dbus !network !dhcdbd !networkmanager syslog-ng @acpid @alsa @wicd @bluetooth)
This is my openbox autostart.sh where I'm starting pulse:

    nitrogen --restore &
    start-pulseaudio-x11 &
    pnmixer &
    fbxkb &
    batti &
    dropboxd &
    blueman-applet &
And finally my inittab executing slim:

  • ALSA levels always reset

    Hello everybody!
A am trying to execute script stored in /etc/profile.d.
    I created alsa.sh script:
    alsactl --file /etc/profile.d/asound.state restore
and put it in /etc/profile.d directory. But nothing happens.
If I add any other line to this script this line executes perfectly. If I execute this script in bash
    sh alsa.sh
    it runs just fine.
    What could be the reason?

  • [SOLVED] Is alsa still required if I start using PulseAudio?

I am a bit confused. PulseAudio claims to be a daemon, but does not has to be listed in DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf and is run as a normal user. Should I remove alsa from DAEMONS array or leave it there?
EDIT: after a test run, the empirical answer is: alsa has to stay in rc.conf
EDIT: after test run, removing alsa from rc.conf is possible. However, I have to restore volume settings manually the first time boots without alsa deamon.

If I understand the Wikipedia entry correctly, PulseAudio uses ALSA drivers. So, first, you completely setup ALSA as if you were using it by itself, then second, you setup PulseAudio to use ALSA.
By reading the Arch wiki, it appears that, yes, PulseAudio is a daemon, but no, there isn't an "/etc/rc.d" version to put in the DAEMONS array. Instead, you either start it by hand or the WM / DE you use starts it automatically.
Should I remove alsa from DAEMONS array or leave it there?
Wait, I have ALSA in my DAEMONS array? ...Oh, yeah, all that does is save and restore volume settings, right?

I have KDE on laptop ASUS k50ij (intel gma 4500m).
My problem is that when my screen goes blank after 15 minutes the brightness level is different when it was before blanking. In system preferences in power mangement i have disabled "Display brightness". For info, i have udev rule which set up my brightness level to 2 on battery and 3 on AC (yes i know, i like my backlight to be dark).
My udev script regarding brightness on AC:
    echo 3 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    On battery:
    echo 2 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

I think the problem is there forever but i have noticed it just recently because i want to have lower brightness.
    Thanks for any tip!
EDIT: SOLVED by putting "xbacklight -set 6" in /usr/share/config/kdm/Xsetup according to wiki.

    kdm uses:

which is 'A program to run before the greeter is shown...'
    according to comments in kdmrc.
You may try to write your xbacklight command in it.
    That's exactly it, many thanks!

  • Restoring Adjustment Levels Auto Color Corr Options

I entered the following key sequence:
Adjustments Panel | Levels | Alt-Click Auto | Find Dark & Light Colors | Snap Neutral Midtones | Midtones
After keying in this sequence and making adjustments to my photo, I inadvertently hit one too many OKs as I was exiting and PS changed my defaults. They now read: H: 55, S:0, B: 0, R: 128, G: 128 and B: 128.
How can I reset these values to their default settings? Or could someone tell me what they should be?
Thank you very much ... in advance.
    Steve

    Mark,
I'm looking to confirm that these are the correct values; otherwise, whenever I use an Adjustment Levels correction, my pictures will be thrown off by my erroneous default values. I think these are now correct, but I would like to confirm.
