[SOLVED] Run hook on external monitor connect/disconnect

I want to run a script whenever I connect or disconnect an external monitor from my laptop.
Is there a hook I can create somewhere to achieve this?

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be working for me. =/
I've inserted
echo "Action was $SRANDRD_ACTION" >> $HOME/srandrd.out
into the script to attempt some debugging but I get no output. My guess is that the script isn't being run at all.

  • External Monitor connects, disconnects, re-connects, disconnects, endlessly

    Hi,
When I physically connect my Lenovo G575 laptop, running win7, to my LG LCD monitor via VGA cable, my laptop will not remain internally connected to the monitor. The laptop disconnects, then re-connects, then disconnects to the monitor repeatedly. So, there is signal feed being sent from the PC and recieved by the monitor, then the disconnect sound is made and the signal stops... then the connect sound is made and the signal is restored to the monitor, over and over again. During connections, the monitor displays as desired. This monitor and VGA cable work flawlessly on my other laptops, but not my Lenovo. I've tried changing the resolution settings on the computer, which does not solve the problem. How do I get the Lenovo to remain connected and feeding signal to the TV? Any ideas? What could the problem be?
I've read the Lenovo owners manual for my model. There was nothing relatively helpful in it.
Adapter Type: AMD Radeon HD 6310M [Computer says "This device is working properly" & is also up to date]
    Driver Version: 8.792.2.4000

    Robert,
My wife's MacBook exhibits the EXACT same problem. The speed drops from around 3,100kbps to as low as a lousy 80kbps as soon as the external monitor is connected. I get 3,200kbps on my desktop, which is NOT on wireless.
Her monitor (ViewSonic LCD flat panel, I believe) is connected directly to the MacBook, as it came with the appropriate connector.
It's very discouraging that you don't have an answer yet after two months.
The next step has to be to bring the MacBooks back to Apple for replacement of the internal airport card.
    Thanks for having posted this.

  • X240 (Win 8.1) w/ Ultra Dock and two external monitors connected via DisplayPort problem

I'm having trouble making this combination work. This Ultra Dock does have two DP connectors, computer sees both external monitors (HP ZR24w) but I cannot get any picture on both at the same time using DP. Sometimes one display does work, but that is not always working.
When I connect same monitors via VGA/DSUB and DP (with Lenovo DPtoDVI converter) I can get this to work - both same time - , but I'd prefer them both digital and both native DP as both monitors do have that port.
Ultra Dock does already have the latest firmware and this problem seems to not relate to the flickering problem with T440 etc. X240 is also running latest UEFI/BIOS and I've also tried latest Intel Beta display driver, no effect.

Two Asus monitors attached via DVI
Let me start by saying that the internal and both external monitors work simultaneously. However, getting to that state is the problem.
I can boot successfully with the laptop in the dock with 1) just the internal monitor, or 2) the internal and one external monitor connected.
However, if I try to boot with both monitors connected via DVI, the following happens:
Windows logon screen appears -- but there is no cursor on the screen
I enter the password and the login continues for 30-60 seconds, then
Blue screen SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION for nvlddmkm.sys with STOP x0000003B
Lenovo has replaced the dock with no change in behavior.
    Drivers and BIOS are current.
Most recent change was to set BIOS so Win 7 automatically detects Nvidia Optimus.
At this point, my best workaround is to disconnect one external monitor whenever I need to reboot, and then connect it again after everything is runing. Not terrible... but it really shouldn't be necessary. Any suggestions?
If you want to drive the monitors in the manner stated, the BIOS Display property must be set to Discrete and the auto detection below it must be disabled.

  • Yosemite Won't Shutdown With External Monitor Connected

    Hi there...
I have a MBP 2010 and I've updated Yosemite from Mavericks. Now I'm running the latest 10.10.2.
Ever since I updated to Yosemite, I have had this problem of my computer won't shutdown when an External monitor is connected. This happens only when I put my computer to sleep. However, if I restart the computer and after logged in to the user and tried to shutdown, it shutdown without any problem. Every time I shutdown it just hangs and I had to force shutdown by press and hold the power button. Which I'm sure is not a proper way.
Right now only my external monitor connected to my MBP. So I did unplugged the ext. monitor and tried shutdown and it works fine. But it think this is the temporary solution that I've found but it is annoying to unplug everytime I wanted to shutdown and plug it back in once the computer is up and running. Which is not idle solution at all.
Am I the only one or a lot of people facing this issue? If there is a solution please share. Very much appreciated. Thanks.

Updated to 10.10.3 and the problem still persist. Still unable to shutdown or restart after wake up from sleep.
Any one affected? Is it something to do with Gfx card?

  • Busted screen, external monitor connection won't work

My PowerBook G4 screen busted a year ago after it fell off a table. I had been successful is using an external monitor up until a couple weeks ago. I have tried a couple monitors and cannot see anything but a white screen. I know a signal is getting from the Mac to the monitor, but only a white screen.
Any ideas on how to get an external monitor connection again?
    Thanks.

    Hi, Bob.
I know a signal is getting from the Mac to the monitor...
How do you know that? Does the external monitor display something other than a white screen at any point during the startup process? In other words, can you really be sure the Mac is ever sending anything other than plain white to the monitor?
As louie says, there's almost no testing you can do without a working display.
What changed a couple of weeks ago, just before you started having this problem with the external monitor? Had you moved the computer and/or the monitor, connected any new devices, disconnected the monitor, upgraded your OS, etc.?

  • Second iMac as external monitor; Connection via firewire without a deck/cam

Second iMac as an external monitor; Connection by firewire without a deck/camera possible?
I spend a lot of hours to find an answer to the following question, unfortunately without any success:
I’m working with a new iMac (Intel, OS 10.4.11) and Final Cut. Additionally I have an old iMac (G3, OS 10.3.9).
I would like to use the FireWire port to transport a dv video stream from the new iMac/Final Cut to the old one so that the old one can be used as a monitor. So all I want is a software for the old iMac that shows an incoming FireWire dv-stream as a live picture.
I tried vlc, videoviewer, iMovie, Vidi and btv. The problem is always the same: Final Cut (on the new iMac) does not find any FireWire/dv-device nor do all these software on the old iMac find a connection to Final Cut. I think the problem is that both sides are seeking for a device-setup at the FireWire-port on the other side. And none of them sends a signal like „yes I’m here and waiting for a dv-stream“.
Another attempt was ScreenRecycler with VNC-client on the old iMac. Unfortunately on my old iMac Os 10.3.9 is the last possible OS and no vnc client on that system is fast enough to show a video in real time.
I also tried virtualDV from Apples FireWire SDK 20. It works so far, that it claims to be a dv-device (on the old iMac) and so Final Cut at the new iMac says: „okay I’ll deliver you that stream“. The problem now is that virtualDV only can record that stream, not show it in real time.
Is there any solution like virtualDV that shows a live preview and turns the iMac in a FireWire dv-device?
Is there any solution that Final Cut simulates to be a FireWire dv-device itself and that another computer finds that device and understand the dv-stream?
Thank you very much for your help.

    Don't think this is possible.
You're better off using a DAC (for example the one made by Canopus) and put your DV in and get a compatible signal out the other end for connection to your monitor.
I don't understand why you would want to go through a computer first, it would be a waste of time and add a huge delay to the signal.
Finally, I wouldn't use a computer monitor as an external display, it would be useless in my experience. Why not just preview on the one you've got by going full screen in FCP? Also using a computer monitor as a preview/output monitor is not a good idea since it's so different from a normal TV and won't show the correct colour space or issues such as flickering and interlace problems, underscan etc etc.
Seems like you're using a sledgehammer to crack a very small nut and that would be to use a DV camera via firewire and then connect up a monitor from that. (again using a convertor box if you have a connection problem.)

No unless we are talkign about a late 2009 or 2010 27" iMac. Otherwise PC's don't have the correct outputs. Please look over Apple's FAQ on that subject (Target Display Mode) and you will see what I mean:

    Hi,
I am not going to be much use here.
    I don't have a computer with Thunderbolt.
The computer I do run a second screen on is a G4 running Leopard and in the Energy Saver there is no setting for the second screen to be set independently than the main screen.
I think it may pay to ask again in the Lion Forum Community.

  • Satellite Pro A120 - refresh lines running on the external monitor

Ok I just wanna Know if any one else is having this Problem an if they fixed it
I 've connected an external monitor to a A120 you can see the refresh lines running the screen i've changed the screen and power cables to check it's properly earthed and have pushed the refresh rate all the way up but it's still happening just wondering if any one else has the problem so i know i'm not going nuts
(yes i have done a driver upgrade and tried a different monitor the only thing the same is the laptop but i don't wanna get the engineers out if it's some thing i can solve )

    Hi
Its not easy to say what could be wrong without any detailed and deep testing.
If these refresh lines appear on all external displays then the problem could be related to the graphic card.
But did you check the different screen resolution on the external display???
    Please do it!
I found also a information that the display driver may not be detected correctly.
In this case you have to delete the two unknown devices in device manager.
Reboot the system and the display adapter will be detected again.
After the automatic installation of the driver is complete, please reboot once again.

  • HP Zbook 15, external monitor connected to docking station issue

    Dear all
I have bought a HP Zbook 15 laptop and installed Ubuntu 12.04. It does not show anything on the external monitor when I mount the laptop on the docking station.
After installing the Ubuntu 12.04 and putting it on the docking station for the first time, I got this problem:
"If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver". I have attached the whole log file. Then, I installed the latest Nvidia driver, and restarted the machine. This time, I do not see that error message; however, I cannot see anything on my external monitor which is connected to the docking station. Can you please tell me how to fix this problem?
    Best regards,

@emeres: Sorry, yes, it's an HP 2013 UltraSlim Docking Station. I figured it was the only one compatible with the notebook model I provided.
Regarding any electrical circuitry or controls... well, sure, I'm assuming there's some circuitry in there
I'll give a whirl at using that two screen setup when I get a chance. I'm not inclined to think I need to hard-code it in a xorg conf file of some sort given that xrandr finds it just fine. I'm just perplexed by why it goes AWOL after one connect/disconnect. Now that you mention it, it could be the docking station internals, as I'm assuming most folks would be using this to plug in their computer, then completely remove it to go elsewhere, and then come back to their desk. Thus, they'd be physically disconnecting it vs. just toggling?
That said, I'm pretty sure I can use Windows Fn+F4 to toggle laptop vs. laptop + "projector" (what Win7 calls any external display) all day with no issues, so I'd think xrandr should be able to do the same?
Thanks for the input and links.

  • External monitor connected to MBA causes Internet slow to a crawl

Real odd issue. I have a Macbook Air and connected to it is a DVI based Formac 19" monitor. Has worked fine with my old graphite base station at B rates. Purchased a new Netgear Dual Band N router and if I connect my external monitor to my MBA, my internet becomes very unstable and hardely works. I mean slug speeds. Not even 28K I would say. I then unplug the white dvi adapter that Apple provided with the MBA from the side of the MBA, don't even need to power down the monitor and can leave it turned on (I guess it is sleep mode since no video signal), and I get great speeds again.
What gives. Is there some issue with monitors connected to the MBA causing interference with airport wireless?? I had the same issue with a nice Belkin N1 and returned that a couple weeks ago thinking it was a crappy router but now another real nice wireless router has same issue.
Or is this an issue with MBA itself. I really need a 2nd display for when I work all day long.
    Any suggestions.
    Thanks
    tj

I'm having the same issue. My home network setup has an Airport Extreme running 802.11n, with an Airport Express attached for a b/g network. My Macbook Air connects fine to the n network except for when I connect it to an external monitor. Right now I'm seeing transfer speeds of 50Kb/sec. Has anyone come across a solution?

  • 10.6.8 update: screen brightness issues when hooked to external monitor

I just upgraded to MacOS 10.6.8 yesterday, and since then, the screen on my Macbook is acting strange.
I'm hooked up to an external monitor which I use almost all the time as the primary monitor.  Usually, when I'm using the external, I turn the brightness all the way down (to black) on the Macbook.  After the update, however, the Macbook seems to have a mind of its own.  The screen gets brighter, then dimmer, then brighter again, without reason.  Or, othertimes, after about 30 seconds of inactivity, the Macbook screen gets brighter, then when you move the mouse, it goes back to black again.
It's not that I care so much, but just wish I knew what was going on.  Glitch in the new software?
    Macbook
    MacOS 10.6.8
    External monitor: ViewSonic VA2231wm

Same problem here with a MacBook Pro. I have the notebook connected to a Cinema Display and thus manually dimmed down completely my MacBook Screen. Now after updating to 10.6.8 my MacBook screen dimms up at the time when it would normally dimm it down if the screen was "enabled".
I tried several steps to fix that:
    - Dis- and reconnected my external Cinema Display.
    - Changed display and energy safer settings in system preferences.
    - Fixed file permissions.
    - Did a PRAM-reset.
    Nothing helped.
    Please help us!

  • Need Win XP to recognize external monitor connected to Macbook in BootCamp

I have a Macbook running Leopard connected to an external monitor. When I close the lid, it goes to sleep and I can click mouse or spacebar on keyboard to wake it up and show the image on the external monitor. Can't achieve the same thing in Win XP on the BootCamp side. How to do it?

Just for clarification, when running XP in Boot Camp can you now auto wake the laptop in XP? By doing what? Mouse, keyboard, bluetooth? Not knowing this has stopped me from buying a MacBook Pro. Would really like to know how this works. Thanks in advance.

  • Flickering on DVI external monitor connected to 2009 Macbook

This is an ongoing an intermittent problem. At one point Apple phone support suggested that engineers are working on the problem but I haven't heard any updates.
The problem is with a 2009 macbook (13 inch) connected to an apple display (from 2008) by an apple minidisplayport to dvi connector. I don't find this kind of problem when another computer is connected to the display. The problem is unaffected by changing the brightness settings on the display.
The problem is intermittent, it occurs roughly once every five days. It typically occurs after the computer wakes from sleep. It doesn't usually occur when the macbook is first connected to the display (this suggests that it is not a problem with the minidisplayport to dvi cable) and jiggling the cable doesn't cause the problem or make it go away. The problem doesn't occur in particular when the computer is hot, it could be cool, after it is woken from sleep. There are no problems on the macbook's built in display.
The flickering is quite dramatic. Dark flashes extend from the bottom of the display sometimes 50% of the way up the screen and sometime 75% of the way up. The frequency is irregular but during an episode the flickers occur about once every one or two seconds, but sometimes there is a gap of 5 seconds. The episode will come to an end if I put the machine to sleep and wake it again (this also suggests that this is not a problem with the cable connection or the monitor).
It is difficult to get support on this issue. Since the problem is intermittent and may not occur for 5 days it doesn't make sense to try to reproduce it in an apple store. I called apple phone support and the technician recommended adjusting the brightness of the display, resetting the pram, moving some files that record configuration data for the external monitor. These didn't help. The technician acknowledged that apple is working on this problem and recommended that I call back if the problem recurred. I called back a couple weeks later and a technician recommended that I buy another minidisplayport dvi connector - to be frank this is an inconsiderate suggestion for a problem with end to end apple hardware - and I don't expect it to solve the problem.
How should I troubleshoot this problem, or get effective help from Apple? Is this a problem with the graphics card?
    John

Hello, i have the same kind of issue.
75% of the time, my external screen works fine, otherwise, i need 5-10 plug/unplug/reboot to make it work...
