[SOLVED] Running skype results in only a blank window showing up.

When I try to run Skype as a separate user, I only get a blank window and nothing happens. I set it up using the instructions found here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sk … ecial_user
I have no idea what could be causing this so I don't know what information/logs/configurations I should post. On another note, running Skype as my normal user works.
Edit: neachdainn's solution fixed it.

The problem comes from the xorg-server update. According to the warning after the update, X11 won't run except from the virtual terminal the user logged into... which means that you can't startx access the X server as another user.
The solution that worked for me was to add this line to /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config (create if it doesn't exits):
needs_root_rights=yes
Edit: I noticed the date of your post and the date of the update... I don't know if this is your problem. However, I was having this issue before the update too and this fixed it for me regardless. I'll leave my post because this thread was a result in my searching.

• Skype 4.3 displays a blank window

I installed skype 4.3 in two different containers: an Arch container set up with pacstrap, and a Debian unstable container set up with debootstrap.
I'm running the containers using systemd-nspawn:
xhost +local: && systemd-nspawn -bD /opt/arch.skype
Within the containers, I created a simple user for skype. In the Arch container I installed skype from the official repos, in Debian I installed the deb package after installing the following packages:
apt-get install libasound2:i386 libqt4-dbus:i386 libqt4-network:i386 libqt4-webkit:i386 libqt4-xml:i386 libqtcore4:i386 libqtgui4:i386 libx11-6:i386 libx11-6:i386 libxss1:i386 libxv1:i386
Besides that, I can't remember any relevant configuration I made.
Point is, whenever I start Skype, the window is empty. When I started it using the Debian container, I managed to click away the first small EULA window by randomly clicking everywhere in the window, but the next window was blank as well (and my guess would be this is the login window).
Current Arch version: Linux 3.16.4-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Oct 6 08:22:27 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Hi Ron,
Try deleting this file.
com.apple.Preview.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences.
Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, emtpy the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, right or control click that image, then click Get Info.
In the Get Info window click Open with. You may have to click the discovery triangle.
Click the pop menu and select the application you want to open that image with... you may have to navigate to your Applications folder to make a selection.

• Google -- images found 57,800,000 results but only 30 or so showed up. How do I view more images? I like the older firefox better: I could scroll through hundreds of images.

I like the old firefox much better. When I go to Google --> images and type in "spider", Google tells me that 57,800,000 images were found, but only 30 (or so) are displayed now and there doesn't seem to be a way to access more images. Prior to the upgrade, I could scroll through page after page of images to find the best image for my needs. Tools --> options didn't provide any solutions.

rimsx: Thank you once again for the ideas. No error message is generated. I did try disabling all extensions to see if that did anything, too, and restarting firefox.
I work on a government computer, so maybe it's a problem getting through our firewall! Who knows? Chrome and Internet Explorer allow me to search through pictures, though, so I've got other options. For some odd reason, I was a little partial to firefox.
The way things work around here is that I can try using firefox again in a few months and everything will work perfectly!!!!
Once again, thank you for taking the time with me. You've been very kind and helpful.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
:
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

• Help: Need a way to run skype w/o install

Already checked the previous posts and just ended up getting redirected all over with no luck.
I am unable to install using the executable and need the latest archived program files.
Many thanks in advance.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Try this  Lessmsi  method:
http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-archive/Impossible-to-install-v6-13-0-104-Error-1603/m-p/...
Be aware that if you want to install the currently latest 7.2.0.103 version, then you should use SkypeSetup_7.2.0.103.msi file in order to extract Skype.exe and Login.cab files.
SkypeSetup_7.2.0.103.msi file can be downloaded using this link:
http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_7.2.0.103.msi
Don't run this installer, but only use the downloaded SkypeSetup_7.2.0.103.msi file to extract the Skype.exe and Login.cab files.

• [SOLVED] Blank windows while they should have content.

Hi.  This is my first time posting.  My Macbook Pro with Os X Mavericks has been running super slow since before I installed Mavericks so I'm pretty sure it's not the OS that has the problem.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser, particulary google chrome.  If mail is open...forget about it, down to a crawl.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)
P.S. - Also, it sounds like something is loose inside my mac.  How should I proceed?

• I open my email from frontiernet (a local provider) I can read the email but when I go to reply or forward I get a Skype help page then a blank page. Therefore I can't reply or forward email.

I log-in to webmail. frontier.com and go to my inbox. I have no trouble reading my email but I cannot reply or forward. When I try to do either I get a screen that first has a Skype help page then goes blank. It says done on the bottom but there is no reply box to type in. I've never had this problem before and I've been doing this for almost 2 years on may computers. The only thing different is I had some work done and had to re-install Firefox. Could a newer version cause the problem? I do not have this problem when I use IE or am on a different computer. This was happening even before I installed Skype.

Disable the Skype extension for Firefox - both versions if you really have two versions installed.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, 10.9.1, pictures that come attached to emails no longer display.  There is only a blank space that after about 1 minute, has a small box with a question mark.  Double clicking on the box will open the image in a separate window.  It's very slow and tedious for multiple images.  How can I go back to attached and displayed  images?  If I click on "Forward", the images appear instantly in the email to be forwarded.

Scott,
My problem seemed to fix itself.  Or, by shutting down the computer one night, instead of putting it to sleep, may have reset something.  Since updating to Mavericks, I always (or usually) let the computer sleep overnight or anytime I'm walking away from it.  A few days ago, I was updating notes for my kids about how to find all my stuff and how to turn on my computer, so I wanted to rewrite the start-up procedures for the iMac, just in case they ever need to.  Well, I shut it down one night so the following morning, I could write down each step.  Lo and behold, the images, etc. are all there again!  Solved, but I'm not sure why.

• The sharepoint my company uses no longer works properly with firefox, only a blank page appears, is there a fix for this?

Hello,
We currently use Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and it doesn't seem to be compatible with the latest version of Firefox (33). When I try to open a sharepoint page, only a blank page appears. I do not get any error messages. The sharepoint works with other browsers, such as Chrome.
Is there a work around available so that we may continue to use Firefox?
Thank you!

Do either of these typical troubleshooting steps make any difference?
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Command+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
"3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
* right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
* (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
* click the globe or padlock to the left of the address in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode.
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).
Any difference?

• HP LJ 1320 only prints blank pages

The printer will only print blank pages. Test pages are also blank (including from the Green Button). This is a recurring issue. It was solved in the past by fiddling with the cartridge and mechanical parts inside (we don't know what exactly sovled the problem). Toner is full. I ran the HP Diagnostic Tool and it found no "X"s.
I verified that the following mechanical parts are functional:
switch on left side of cartridge door
plastic tab on top right of door, which connects to laser spring/switch
spring/switch underneath top panel, which seems to enable laser
arm/gears to enable paper spindle
contacts on printer-side of toner/printer connection (this part slides from side to side 1/4 inches, and I tried printing with it in various locations)
There seem to be no error beeps/tones when the printer starts up or when I close the toner door. (However, it was capable as I bypassed one of the switches and it made an error tone at that point).
I think it must be something like a dead laser (however, I think the laser is invisible and we cannot test tosee if it is functional).
Any other ideas/solutions would be appreciated.
I forgot to mention that the low-toner light is not lit, and we've had this issue with both new and old-working toners cartridges.
