[SOLVED] Screenlets with Openbox

I have looked at 2 post on these forums and no responses were made. Just wanted to check if ATM anyone has managed to run screenlets (http://www.screenlets.org/index.php/Home) with Openbox without any problems.

[SOLVED] SLiM background no longer persists with Openbox

Hello,
I've been using SLiM and Openbox in conjunction for a while now, and one of the features I really liked was how, after logging in, the slim theme would become the Openbox desktop background.
(I didn't set up any configuration file to do this. It happens by default, and as far as I know it might be a bug.)
Recently, I decided to try out some other login managers. Eventually, I decided to return to using SLiM.
Now, however, after logging in, Openbox blanks the screen, replacing the SLiM theme with the default grey background.
I don't know if one of the other login managers modified some configuration files, or if something completely different is happening.
In short, I have two questions:
Has anyone else experienced this behaviour between SLiM and Openbox? If so, can anyone confirm whether or not the persistent background is a bug or intentional?
What files cause Openbox to blank the screen on startup? How could I disable this?

I'm pretty sure this behavior is a bug. I use SLIM and if you don't set the background after you log in, the SLIM background will persist including any prompts that might pop up (try pressing F1 to bring up the WM selection prompt and then log in to see what I mean).
I use hsetroot from the AUR with Openbox to set the background at start up by putting it in ~/.config/openbox/autostart.
There are also other similiar programs you can use to set the background with openbox like nitrogen, feh, to name a few. Take your pick.

[SOLVED] Problem with "su" and "login".

Hi, I reinstalled Arch Linux today when I updated "filesystem" and reboot appeared an error with root device, but I solved with installation CD.
I restarted laptop after solving error with root device when I went to XFCE4 and open a terminal I tried to login as root with "su" and "su -" but showed this error:
bash: su: command not found
So I rebooted to start in text mode.
When loaded SLIM I press ctrl+alt+F1 to enter text mode.
I type root to login but did'nt appear to enter the pass, appeared again to enter login. I tried type my user but did the same.
Someone can help me?

Thank you falconindy. I upgrade with --force because I search in Google the problem show "filesystem" when I tried install and I read that solution is upgrade "filesystem" with --foce.
I tried to reinstall util-linux and now works. Thank you!

Hi. I'm trying to set up dual monitors, but I can't seem to get it to work.

So it looks to me like both displays are being detected. The geometry looks such that one display is on top of the other, but I can change that using an xorg.conf.d config file (e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … xorg.conf). I also tried using arandr.
The real problem is that the display on HDMI3 just isn't "waking up". The power is on, but it just sits there in sleep mode.
Any help would be great. I might just be missing something simple. Thanks.
Edit: I just saw a short list of window managers near the bottom of the Arch Multihead page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … _xorg.conf). I don't see openbox on that list. Does that mean I'm SOL if I want to use openbox with multiple monitors? This page seems to imply that it should work fine with openbox http://magnatecha.com/dual-monitors-wit … nd-xrandr/.

I use XFCE, and when I boot my computer I just run:
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --auto --output DVI-I-2 --auto --left-of DVI-I-1
I'm assuming if you modify the names appropriately that it'll work too. I have had issues before trying to run dual monitors without taking both outputs off of a single video card (which is what I'm doing now). For example, I had a graphics card with one (VGA) output and a VGA output on my motherboard. But, connecting the graphics card disabled the on-board VGA. So it is possible (I'm not an expert here) that two displays coming off the motherboard may not work for hardware reasons.

How do you manage power with Openbox on laptop?

What do you use to check the battery power with Openbox. On other distros, there is generally a popup when the battery has reached a low level.
I would like to know how other people manage it. Do you try to reproduce other distro's behavior?

For the extra lazy you could always just use xfce4-power-manager and some kind of taskbar with a tray. Though I think this kind of goes against the whole idea of setting things up in manually in a customized way.
I use i3, and the default i3status (the program that feeds info the i3bar) has an option for battery levels. I made it so that it turns blood red when I get to a certain percentage. In terms of a total WM agnostic solution, you could always just have a cronjob run a script that checks the level, then throws up an xdialog box telling you about low battery levels, and then even have it shutdown/hibernate/suspend at a certain level.

Solve equation with one unknown parameter (x)

I am working on a Windows Phone program that calculates taxes due. One of the calculations is a formula/equation with an unknown 'x'. I have searched a lot on solving equations with vb but this really exceeds my - admittedly small - math knob. Perhaps you
can help me out.
The equation to solve is (for example):
((25000 + x) * 0.06) + x = 16500
The only unknown variable is x. Does someone know the proper code to solve this equation?

Are you looking to code some super-intelligent maths equation solver that can solve any type of equation (if so - good luck!)? Or are the equations you want to solve all of the same type?
The example you gave is of the form (A + x) * B + x = C. You can rearrange that to (1 + B) * x + A * B = C and from there to x = (C - A * B) / (1 + B).
If all your equations are in that form, you just need to identify the value of A, B and C and use the last formula I gave to calculate x.
I wasn't going to do that for him.

What version of pytyle with openbox ?

jsut wondering what version of pytyle i should be using with openbox, i used to use pytyle1 but now i see its up to version 3.

Is Hal, Fam and Gdm anything exclusive to Gnome or can it be used with Openbox aswell?
I want to have full folder update in realtime, automatic usb-stick mounts/dismounts and a good looking login manager.

hal is more or less a dependency of Xorg anyway.

[Solved] gsimplecal auto focus problem with openbox+tint2

I'm using these apps described above.
Well, after I click the clock in tint2, the gsimplecal shows, but, it won't get focus automatically, which annoyed me a lot.
I've already set <focusNew>yes</focusNew> in my openbox/rc.xml.
Also, I noticed that even started from terminal, the gsimplecal window won't get the focus.
Is this a bug (or f**king feature) of gsimplecal? I installed it yesterday by yaourt -S gsimplecal-git.

This problem is solved by adding a per-application setting to openbox, as described in the gsimplecal wiki.
Adding the <focus>yes</focus> is enough, it doesn't need that much.

This seems to be related to the skip_taskbar window hint (set to true by default), as of gsimplecal v0.6 you can override it with the following in your config:
mainwindow_skip_taskbar = 0

[SOLVED] tilda won't work with openbox autostart

I tried to start tilda with ~/.config/openbox/autostart. I can see tilda among the processes but pulldown key has no effect.
Tilda works when starting from terminal with the following error messages:

[SOLVED] FreeNX with fluxbox/openbox/xfce4 WM's

Hello all,
There are many posts here and elsewhere with people having trouble with FreeNX when using the *box and xfce window managers. I have found out how to make them work very easily and thought I would post here instead of replying to multiple old threads.
For the *box users I assume you are starting your X session by running startx, which parses .xinitrc which contains openbox or fluxbox commands. The question is what commands do you use in the FreeNX client 'custom' setting to get it to work. As most people have found, trying 'startx' or 'openbox-session' does not appear to work, and you either get a black screen, or it quits straight away.
Openbox/Fluxbox
Assuming you have FreeNX installed and have sorted out the keys/sshd stuff and can connect to the server, then:-
- Go to /opt/NX/etc and edit the file node.conf with your favourite text editor (as root).
- Find the setting #USER_X_STARTUP_SCRIPT about 3/4 of the way down.
- Remove the '#' from the front of the line and replace whatever is after the equal sign with .xinitrc
USER_X_STARTUP_SCRIPT=.xinitrc
Save file and close. Thats it for the server.
Now on the client end:-
- Configure your connection and under Desktop select Custom from the drop-down that contains KDE etc.
- Click on Settings and in the first group select the middle option Run the default X client script on server
- In the second group select New virtual desktop
Click ok and try to connect. Hopefully it should just bring up your desktop and start working. I think this works for Xfce4 aswell if your .xinitrc contains the startxfce4 command.

Since Xfce4 has its own startup script I also tried out another way and it worked fine. All I did was edit the node.conf file again and replace the startkde command with startxfce4, and then just select kde from the dropdown on the connection dialog.
/opt/NX/etc/node.conf
replace
#COMMAND_START_KDE=startkde
with
COMMAND_START_KDE=startxfce4
Remember to remove the # symbol at the start of the line.
