[SOLVED]screensaver does it's own thing.

Hi,
I have a minor glitch with gnome screensaver.
I set it to start after 25 mins but if I go off to do something it kicks in after about one minute.
I tried using xscreensavers instead but they either did not start or had a similar problem.
dpms is set to true but putting time value options in did not help.
This is arch 64 bit.
I know it's not bad..I still have a screensaver...
but it would be interesting to discover the cause of this unwanted behaviour.
Gnome power manager doesn't seem to work at all when I tried using that instead.

Hi Nepherte,
Thanks for the reply.
I tried that. The xscreensavers still kicked at the wrong time and also had an error across the top:
'Missing generic event extension on display 0.0'
Which apparently means that my xserver does not have xga support. This should be fixed in the next release of xserver.
I don't suppose it matters if it starts after five mins of inactivity, it might be better for my screen.
Then when another xserver comes along I can use xscreensavers.
There are compiz screensavers but they require something called 'git', which the website said might be unstable.
I could reinstall gnome but it's not worth that just for a screensaver.
It's just that gnome-screensaver has about 4 screensavers and I don't like them.
The other thing I remember is when I uninstalled gnome-screensaver (before all this) there was a warning something about pam.d has been copied.

  • On my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse, on my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse

Having trouble with my MacBook Pro and the cursor jumping around and doing it's own thing.  Clicking opening up other folders etc.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    5. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced.
    6. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    7. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    8. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    9. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Trackpad doing it's own thing after upgrade

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro which I updated to Lion yesterday. A few hours after the update my trackpad began dragging, right clicking, jumping, doing gestures when I was just moving the cursor around, using one finger.
Closing the lid, restarting the computer or doing the P+R-thing during startup temporarily makes things normal again, which is why I think it's a software problem. Any ideas how to fix this?
NOTE: I can use a USB-mouse without any problems, it's only the trackpad acting up.

have u had any response? i'm getting the same thing !

  • Can't set Transition times. iMove does it's own thing random times.

When I try to enter a transition time between clips it may actually change but not to what I had entered. If it changes at all, it tends to be to a random number.  I have the preferances set at 3:00  but even this does nothing, the default remains at 0:05 which is vertually no transition.
Can anyone enlighten me?     What am I doing wrong ?    Has any else had this problem ?

When I started participating here, Karl Petersen was the undisputed iM Mastermind. He knew everything about iM; I never figured out, but I suspect, he was in contact with Randy U's team at Cupertino.
Somehow, we lost him here. I'm not the 'community'-guy, rumors has it, he passed away (not only here).
Second source was/is Daniel Slagle's Unofficial FAQ ... he doesn't maintain it anymore, since the rise of iMovie-b.
Taking a look behind the odds of iM was Lennart Thelander's website (wow, really old school hand-coded!), which listed bugs and gave help for iM-a. Lennart didn't switch to iM-b yet, now avail for about four years - too new for Lennart, too fast development ... so, no news from there.
For sure, David Pogue's Missing Manuals books have to be mentioned ...

With iM-b coming up, Aaron's Unlocking iMovie is another source for 'tricks' (I'm jealous about his professional design …)
And finally, a while ago I was highly irritated, that FinalCut Pro Mastermind Tom Wolsky joined the 'amateurs party' here, he's a FC/p sensei, usually participating in the pro forums ... that was before iMovie-on-steroids (=FCPX) appeared ... now, I know why   he actually published a worth reading book about transition from iM to FCPX
... the rest is ... experience, interest, curiosity, and hours of reading any source, from wikipedia to fcp.co ...

  • Ipad Air does it's own thing!

Hi all, got a problem with my ipad. When you open a page e.g.  ebay, after a few seconds it will start scrolling down on it's own and will open another page. I tried 5 times to write this message on the ipad but couldn't. I called in to my local apple store and the suggested I restore the ipad using itunes via my laptop. This I did but it didn't work. I'm hoping someone can suggest a solution otherwise its a 120mile round trip to apple.

Sounds like a hardware problem. Contact Apple Support: http://www.apple.com/contact/

  • Ipad2 is doing it's own thing.  opening appplications typing etc what should I do.

ipad2 is on the fritz opening applications and typing on its own. just started a couple of days ago.  I have cleaned it multiple times and I have closed all apps and shut he device down completely numerous times.  Do I need to take it to the apple store?

Did that right after first post.  As soon as I open it it goes haywire.  Also did a hard reset holding power button and function button for 15 secs.  You got anything else?

  • [SOLVED]What does the "add activity" thing do in kde 4?

i am running kde 4.1 and when i click on the widget button in the top left, i get a list of things I can do, one of which is "zoom out" when i click zoom out, the desktop shrinks but the kicker stays the same size. If i click on the widget icon again, i can "add an activity" and another desktop shows up. My question is, what is the use of this and how can i use it? I am quite curious.

its for having multiple layers of widgets... its called ZUI and its not finished, but will be in 4.2 - and infact its a great feature, once ppl understand it
at this very moment its not really usable tho...

  • [solved] wxpython upgrade and not owned filesystem

    Hi,
I had a strange problem today. I did a big update today (1 giga). I had a conflict with wxpython.
I removed wxpython and installed it again. When installing wxpython, I get a lot of
    wxpython: /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/wx.pth exists in filesystem
I checked to see if fiel are own by a package and it is not hte case as you can see:
    LANG=en pacman -Qo /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/wx-2.8-gtk2-unicode/wxPython/xrc.py
    error: No package owns /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/wx-2.8-gtk2-unicode/wxPython/xrc.py
I tried on few other files. It looks like wxpython did not uninstall well. I've never face such an ugly problem. What could I do?

OK, thank you very much KenJackson. I didn't know shell brace expansion, just remembered I,ve already used it without trying to understand it... I really should learn a bit more of shell! Just living in python is a bit restrictive!!
I did move the file you suggested and a few other files that are not owned by any packages and wxpython seems to be working.
The other files are shown in the full script I used:
    cd /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages
    mv {,PROB}wx.pth
    mv {,PROB}wxversion.py
    mv {,PROB}wxversion.pyc
    mv {,PROB}wx-2.8-gtk2-unicode
    cd /usr/bin
    mv {,PROB}editra
    mv {,PROB}helpviewer
    mv {,PROB}img2png
    mv {,PROB}img2py
    mv {,PROB}img2xpm
    mv {,PROB}pyalacarte
    mv {,PROB}pyalamode
    mv {,PROB}pycrust
    mv {,PROB}pyshell
    mv {,PROB}pywrap
    mv {,PROB}pywxrc
    mv {,PROB}xrced

The problems seems solved but does not explain why this problem occured... I'm closing the topic so far.

  • Screensaver does not start

Hi, since upgrading to 10.5.1 my screensaver does not start either by hot corner or automatically. I can get it to test from the preference pane, any suggestions?

    Same problem here,
I'm not sure entering/recovering from sleep has anything to do with the problem, since i sleep my powerbook running 10.5.1 every day, and the screensaver works fine.
On my Macbook Pro however, (10.5.1) it seems that the problem occurs only after a few days of uptime (and of course, some sleep/wakeup sessions). After a reboot the screensaver/hot corners work again, but only for a few days..
I use quicksilver to lock my machine using the screensaver, and not being able to do this all the time is quite annoying
There are a few other threads about this, but so far no solutions...

  • Screensaver does not start after upgrading to 10.7

Since upgrading to 10.7 my screensaver does not start either by hot corner or automatically. I can get it to test from the preference pane, any suggestions?

Okay.... Sorry for calling the technology airplay vice AirPrint.   I have done all the standard power reset and wireless tips (i.e.delete the wireless network, re-add the wireless network, even monitored the RF frequency spectrum to make sure nobody is stomping on my wireless signal, solid 32Mbits over a Cisco 1811w).  I have over 28 years in networking experience.  So, I assume you all the basic stuff has been covered.  Before our Apple devices got upgraded to IOS7 (2 IPads and 2 iPhones), we had no problems printing to our Brother HL-5450DN series printer (updated to the latest firmware).  I strongly believe it has something to do with the AirPrint discovery process as shared in my last post.  My next step is to enable port mirroring and monitor the packet exchange using wireshark or tcpdump.  This will probably have to wait until the weekend.

Does this issue occur with other dashboard reports too or only with risk violations?
Also, can you check if the batch risk analysis has been successfully completed?

roaminggnome was referring to the page that you posted from i.e. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1292
You've tried contacting iTunes Support as it suggests on that page ? If not then you can contact them via this page and see what they say (you will probably need to give them images of the front and back of the card, and possibly its receipt) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then iTunes Cards And Codes

  • While doing ODI migration what things are needed to be setup in Topology?

While doing ODI migration what things are needed to be setup in Topology manager ?
1.Like in Toplogy in file we hive file paths.
    2. In Planning we set Logical schema .
    Not sure about other things.
    Hoping some can can help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Lots of things are defined in the topology manager - below is a simplified list
    1) Physiccal Schemas the actual connection information / details related to any technology you plan to use in your ODI integration interfaces
    2) Logical schema, abstracted version of the Physical schema which allows greater flexibility ad reuse across environments
    3) Contexts - how you asssociate logical and physical schemas
    4) Agents - manage the execution of ODI jobs
When you talk about migration, do you mean moving ODI objects between seperate environments such as Dev and Prod? If so you will need to ensure that all the technologies you use in Dev are present in Prod. The physical layer has been set up with all the correct connection details. Your logical scemas has been set up matching your configuration in the dev environment and you have used the contexts to associate the logical and physical layers as per your dev configuration.

I gave my brother my old iPad.  I reset it so it's like a new iPad. But, it is still in my iCloud tabs, not what he is doing, but the last thing i had open in Safari. When I went to iCloud.com and did the find my iPhone thing, it was still listed. But it couldn't find it. It's rather annoying to have it there all the time. How do I make it go away. I can't see a way to tell iCloud that that device is no longer mine.

    Wipe iPhone/iPad/iPod touch clean
There are a few steps to do:
Switch off iMessage in Settings > Messages
Switch off FaceTime in Settings > FaceTime
Delete iCloud in Settings > iCloud > Delete Account
Finally Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
    Un-register your device: https://supportprofile.apple.com
    Now you can sell/give.

If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
