[SOLVED]second HDD installing problems

I have tried to install a second hard drive, but when I should try to use it, I got the message:
"An error occurred while accessing «Volum (reiserfs)» The system responded: org freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolicy: org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed.auth_admin_keep_always <--action,result"
How do I solve the probleme?

Redhat Linux ES w/SATA HDD install problem

I'm trying to install Redhat Linux ES
on a AMD64 K8N Neo2 mainboard based on
the NVIDIA nForce 3 Ultra Chipset.
I'm using 2 SATA Seagate HardDrives with
or without RAID.
It won't install because
Redhat's OS installation scripts states that it doesn't detect
any Harddrives, even though BIOS sees them.
It prompts me to install a HDD Driver.
I can't seem to find one for this system.
Is Redhat installation with SATA drives possible?

[SOLVED] EFI grub Install problems

I know this topic has been beat to death but I cannot for the life of me figure this out.
My Config:
1 Hard Drive -- /dev/sda
/dev/sda2 is EFI Partition.
/dev/sda5 is /mnt/boot during the install
/dev/sda6 is /mnt/ during the install
PC has windows 8.1 installed and booting fine with rEFInd installed. I run through the basic arch installation and mount my /dev/sda2 to /boot/ like in the beginners guide.
I chroot and do the commands below: (from the wiki)
# mount -t efivarfs efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars # ignore if already mounted
# pacman -S grub efibootmgr
# grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
It installs fine, and then I run:
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
It completes as well, and im left with a EFI/arch_grub/something.efi and then a /grub folder with the config in it on my EFI partition.
When I reboot, grub completly takes over and doesnt boot anything. Just stuck at grub2>...
I have to boot off live CD and remove the EFI/arch_grub folder and the other grub folder to be able to boot windows again.
What am I doing wrong here?

Ok, I went back and re-done the entire thing and made sure I mounted /dev/sda5 to /boot. That left me with a /boot/EFI folder which my refind and microsoft folders are in.
Ran through the installs and everything went fine. I have a /boot/EFI/arch_grub/grubx64.efi file and a /boot/efi/grub/ folder with the grub.cfg file. No errors.
Rebooted, and same thing. reFINd no longer runs first, grub does. grub is broken because there are no kernel lines or anything.
When I reboot the PC and select the boot menu in the BIOS, I get a UEFI entry for "arch_grub" and I can select it and it boots to the broken grub.
I can select rEFInd and it will run, but not automatically like it used to.
If I remove all the arch_grub and grub folder from my EFI partition, then everything works, but of course, no arch.

P6N Diamond New Problem: Second HDD Randomly Starts/Stops Since recent Update

Howdy All,
Continuing problems with the P5N Diamond.
This one's new.
Previously I had the same problem as many others with the cold boot issue. Somehow, someway, it just stopped: cold boot or not, one day it just started booting fine....go figure.
However, I recently (about 3 weeks ago) did the MSI live update that included something or other pertaining to the E-SATA....support for it or something to that end. Although I don't use the E-SATA, I installed it thinking I might at some point and since installing it, I have discovered a new problem: my second drives (in RAID 0) just opens/closes randomly. It seems to mostly occur when operating demanding programs: gaming, watching a video, that sort of thing.
Everytime it does this, it takes me to desktop and asks me what program I want to use to open the program......which when I do, is nothing more than my second (D drive) HDDs in RAID 0. I then get the yellow pop up message in the bottom toolbar from Windows saying it's experienced a write failure problem. It hasn't done any damage that I can tell and I've lost nothing, but being taken to desktop perpetually is a major issue. This problem is driving me absolutely up the wall. No sooner than I start to do something and wham.....I'm at desktop being asked what program I want to use to open up the second HDDs. I've also tried just leaving it open but to no avail: it just randomly continues to open and close.
I have my O/S on the C drive and 2 more HDDs in RAID O for back up on ports 6 & 7. Since doing the MSI update that included the E-SATA whatever, this new problem almost prevents the computer from being usable: certainly nothing in gaming is possible along with anything that requires uninterruption.
Here's my system:
M/B: P6N Diamond
CPU: E6850
RAM: Corsair XMS PC-8500, 2 x 1 gig
HDD: 1- WD 150 Raptor
HDD: 2- WD 5000AAKS in Raid 0
Vid Card: EVGA 8800GTX
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750 Silencer
ODD: Sony DRU 830A
FDD: Sony Floppy
Misc: Scythe fans x 5
O/S: XP Pro w/ SP2
Running BIOS 1.2
So, being fairly certain the MSI update created the problem, my question is, how do I undo the MSI's most recent update to remove it? When I go into Add/Remove Programs, nothing is listed there. I'm not sure this is the source of the problem but I do know I didn't have it beforehand.
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this....even any ideas. While I have some computer knowledge, I'm not as tech savvy as most here, but this problem is, apart from driving me up a wall, making the computer almost unusable. FYI, I haven't done a System Restore because I've installed several things since and don't want to lose them if I can isolate the problem, but I will if that's what you all recommend.
Again, sorry for what may be a noobish question, but I'm not sure where else to go. After dealing with MSI's tech support, I'd rather talk to a wall.

Forgive me for asking, but I am a bit confused. Is your "cold boot issue" now solved? If so, do you think that the new drives are the key?

250GB Caviar RE(2500YS) - have to power off (power button) when HD LED goes solid. so far no problems for a week.
80 GB SATA II Hitachi Deskstar (HDS728080PLA380 - May 2005) - same as 150 GB Raptors, just a reset or four, only did a days worth of testing with no errors.
well, I was hoping for those 2500YS to work properly. Now it makes it really hard to track the problems with so many different errors and 3 different places it can go wrong 4723/nvidia/msi/HD Manufacturer. wait, that's 4. Oh boy!
Hopefully this gets resolved soon. I've already had to move this MB to my secondary system, and for other reasons than this. I didn't mind hitting the reset button to get this to run. I get the feeling that MSI has abandoned this board on us. with the new P7N being released it will be even harder to get anyone to mess with this thing.

[SOLVED] System stopped seeing my second HDD

Today after system upgrade and reboot my Arch stopped seeing my second HDD (it doesn't appear in /dev )
Disk: WD3200AAJS
dmesg:

Storage Controller set as IDE (the second option to choose is AHCI)
Arch kernel doesn't have support for IDE devices anymore, you should select AHCI. The problem is that if you installed "Windows" with the controller as IDE then it will seace to work when you select AHCI.
For what i've read arround here, there is a workarround for IDE devices, but i don't know if it works anylonger:

Satellite A300-15M - Can I install a second HDD?

Hi there.
I own a SatelliteA300-15M. I bought the laptop 2 years ago. I have already 250GB hard drive which came with the laptop. Recently I got my laptop serviced from local shop. I noticed that it has an additional slot for another hard drive. I saw a post that some of the A300/A305 laptops have the space for second hard drive but not the connectors.
If anyone owns A300-15M can they please tell me if i can install a second internal hard drive in my model? Is there a sure way to find if I can really install a second hard drive?

So the case is claer: If you dont have a second SATA connector, you cant install a second HDD.
Check also the forum regarding such questions. The point is that one notebook series (e. g. Satellite A300) is always equipped with the same case but the hardware is different. So not all models have the same features. ;)

No you cannot install the second HDD because there is no HDD connector which would allows to connect the HDD to the mobo.
And No, its not possible to upgrade the mobo with such connector.
The X200 has the two HDD bays because some X200 support 2 HDDs and some dont support it.

I'm not sure I understand the question, is the message tone going more then once?
Turn off repeat message alert here:
settings > notifications > messages > repeat alert > never
Some people have found this does not stop the repeat miessage tone,
if you are one of those then I suggest you contact Apple:

Did you check your user manual?
Usually the user manual provides already such infos.
Im not quite sure if an second HDD could be possible. Check bottom of the unit.
Some series are equipped with a second HDD bay. You could try to remove the plastic cover which secures such HDD bay and could check if there are some HDD connectors which would make the second HD upgrade possible.
It seems that this notebook was also equipped with 2GB RAM So it could be possible to upgrade the RAM up to 4GB. But in my opinion its really not necessary to have 4GB RAM inside if you are using the Windows 32bit OS.
The point is that your 32bit OS can use max 3.2GB RAM due to the 32bit limitation.
So if you want to upgrade the RAM then I would recommend taking 1x 1GB and 1x 2GB RAM module.

I want to install a SSD and move my HDD into the slot for the second HDD. I can't find any document how to install the second HDD. Do I need special adapter or any HW to do that?

At the bottom of the unit you can find two HDD bays. Right?
But one of the bays does not contain any connectors? Right?
At the first look this might be a little bit strange but fact is that different Satellite P200/P200D models were available on the market with different motherboards.
Some would support a 2nd HDD but some units dont. But all models supports the same bottom covers and some people think that an 2nd HDD would be possible which is wrong.

Installed, Win 7 Won't Boot from Second HDD

I've successfully installed Win7 64 Pro on a second internal HD on my fall '12 MBP (X.8.3), located in the optical bay. After having re-attached the first drive, Win7 shows up in the boot selection menu, but when selected, does not boot (error: "please insert boot disk and press any key").
My install process was as follows:
Format second drive into two partitions [OS Extended, FAT32] using disk utility, making sure that the second partition is provided a master boot record.
Disconnect primary drive (SSD), so that the second hdd is recognized as bootable from the Win7 installer.
Boot from prepared bootcamp thumbdrive using a fresh ISO.
Use windows installer to format FAT32 partition as NTFS.
Install windows
Install drivers
Update Win 7 and bootcamp drivers
Power off
Recconnect primary drive (SSD)
Power on
Win 7 shows in boot menu. Instead of working, dead-ends at "no bootable device".
Can still boot from SSD or thumbdrive, but not Win7 partition
Arggggh!
Is there a setting related to the HD controller that needs to be tweaked to make this work? Is there a known issue with the controller firmware? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. Install... and Blue screen!
2.Re-boot but from the Win 7 install disk – seems to work if you hold alt on boot up and select the disk to boot from!
3.When you get into the Windows installer, click past the language selection. Then click "Repair your computer".
4.Windows will scan for installations and prompt you with a list. Select your "C" drive and click Next.
5.You should be presented with a windows titled *System Recovery Options*.
At the bottom of this list you should see +Command Prompt+.
Select the command prompt.
6.When the console opens, you can delete the offending driver using the following command:
DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NVLDDMKM.SYS
7.Close the command prompt window and click the Restart button.
This time, boot from your hard disk.
You will complete the install with no Blue screen.
Having done this go to the Nivida web site and download the GT 7 series drivers for Windows 7.
Install, re-boot and ...
+*... install Bootcamp drivers and right off your back to Blue Screen...*+
Repeat 1-7 and install newly downloaded drivers and off you go

Adding second HDD to HP ENVY 17-j171sa Leap Motion TS SE Notebook PC

Just recently upgraded to SSD as HDD1 in my notebook using ribbon cable etc from 'newmodeUS'
All stable and running well, so I installed a second HDD (which I know is working ok) but the notebook does not see it.
I even installed the original HDD as HDD2 but same problem
I can't find any relevant info on diagnosing this issue, but wondered if this model (leap motion) can actually have a second internal HDD
I can't see anything in the BIOS concerning this
One point to note is that I had to remove a maetal plate which was fitted in HDD2 drive bay - possible that it is not designe to accept?

I received the new cable from NewmodeUS and they were just great - the new cable arrived within days to the UK.
I have now tried all possible permustations using both cables in either port and my findings are that:
The new cable from NewModeUS is definitely OK.
I have used both cables in both ports and HDD2 NEVER sees a disk
I currently have my new SSD connected to HDD1 with the new cable and the HP Original drive in HDD2 using the original cable
So there is nothing wrong with cables or disks.
I have looked in the BIOS Setup and can't find any way to configure to make HDD2 Sata port work
I have tried looking on WIndows 8.1 device Man etc and can't find anything that I can enable.
So I guess the question is - WHAT DO I DO NEXT?
I still wonder if the Leap Motion or some such thing causes any system level restriction?

Second HDD and HDAPM

Hi all. Help me please to solve the problem with HDAPM. Mac mini late 2011.
The first upgrade - replacing the hard drive. I`m installed WD 750Gb, 7200 rpm and HDAPM (http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/)
utility has been installed. Everything was working correctly - the hard drive heads are not parked in idle time. No "marble drop" sound.
I was happy until the next upgrade.
The second upgrade - add second hdd WD 1Tb 5400 rpm. Now WD 750Gb is work place and WD 1Tb is store place.
But, hdapm utility working only with one HDD.
Question:
How to correct edit hdapm.plist to work when system start for two internal HDD, and HDAPM do two drives for maximum apm performance?

Install problem Error with Z drive

Our IT guys configure our machines with a Z drive as a network share. Any ideas how to resolve the conflict with PE9 install.

I did not pick the Z drive for install. I always pick the C drive if given the option. But PE9 just went to work on its own and told me it could not install to the Z drive... there is a known issue posted here along these lines, however, so I think Adobe is on to it... of course i had to install as a trial version on a second machine to test the disk burning...then I have to solve the install problem, so I can install the license on the machine with the install problem.... all a big catch 22.
