[SOLVED] Shudown panic with 3.5.5 and 3.5.6

After upgrading to 3.5.5, my computer consistently crashes on each shutdown. The problem persists with latest 3.5.6. I have downgraded to 3.5.4 to restore clean shutdowns. This picture shows a crash in kworker, but even syslog-ng may crash:

PS: I googled the recent days for shutdown crashes, but seems that I'm the only one. Anyone else?
PS: I'm old, but this was my first screen... I apologize for having previously embedded the full picture!

Starting with systemd my system no longer crashes at shutdown (!?). Tested with 3.6.2 (which also crashed at shutdown if I do the traditional boot, since I still haven't migrated to systemd).
So, it seems that "traditional boot" is no longer stable at shutdown.
Anyway, 3.6.2 heats my CPU to 70ºC (with previous kernels less than 50) and spins my fan a lot. I'll downgrade to 3.5.6, since the old kernel parameters to reduce fix power problems seem not to work either.

  • [Solved] Login freezing with busy mouse cursor and black screen.

After installing some recent updates I have suddenly found a problem when starting the login manager for Cinnamon.
After booting I am greeted with a black screen and a "busy" mouse cursor - like a stopwatch. I can't ctrl-alt-backspace to restart X.
What fixes it is - if I ctrl-alt-F2 to a new console and kill -9 the Xorg process. This causes X to restart normally. I have to do this every time now
I don't know if this is systemd related or what, but it only seemed to happen after the updates below.

    WOW! That did it
Could you explain what happened or why this fixed it please?
    Thanks for your help.
I don't know the details to be honest, but the title of your post basically describes my situation with GDM when I used accountsservice >0.6.25, so I figured it was worth a shot, since the symptoms were the same.
Also, Cinnamon depends on accountsservice if I'm not mistaken, so it didn't seem unreasonable that the update broke Cinnamon too.
I'm glad it works now. Let's hope a updated, working version of accountsservice is released soon.

  • Kernel Panics With 10.5.3 and Video

I've got a stock 2.8GHz early 2008 Mac Pro driving a 30" ACD. In the past, I had kernel panics when playing back video content (mp4 - H.264 - 624x352, 671 kb/s) on Quicktime Player or even VLC, so I downgraded to 10.5.2 and avoided Leopard Graphics Update 1.0. Without LGU, my system would stay stable, and occasionally crash Quicktime if I tried watching a video from a Windows machine.
The videos always take between 4 - 7 minutes of playback before they cause a kernel panic. If I try to play again after a reboot, it takes less time to kernel panic. Playback size seems to affect it also - if I use a large fraction of the ACD's screen, it seems to panic faster.
Is this a graphics card issue? Has anyone run into this before? I have a 2600XT with the old non-noisy firmware. My machine is otherwise very stable - only video playback. I'm guessing the LGU code got put into 10.5.3 and that's why I'm seeing these issues again.

As an addendum, here's what the Console had to say about my last kernel panic 3 minutes and 16 seconds into a Quicktime Player video. Hopefully some (or someone from Apple) will be able to see something in this:

  • Kernel Panic with LaCie Firewire Speakers and SL 64 bit

    Hi all,
I experienced kernel panics during boot in 64 bit and realized that the Apple FW driver causes a kernel panic during boot.
I isolated the problem to be my FW LaCie Speakers (attached through my cinema display 23"). I thought I have a conflict with something else, so I tried to make a clean installation but still, SL crashes when in 64 bit. No problem at all in 32 bit mode.
I'm really surprised as the kernel panic log shows the problem inside the Apple Audio FW driver...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Giuseppe

I just tried to connect the speakers directly to the computer and the problem is gone... really surprised that the hub in the cinema display is causing this problem.

  • [SOLVED] Having Issues with the Nouveau Driver and ACPI

    Hello,
Trying to set up an old laptop I have with Arch and I'm having issues getting X up and running. My graphics chip is:
01:00.0 VGA compatable controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 Go] (rev b2)
I've installed xf86-video-nouveau and get the following error when starting X:
(EE) [drm] failed to open device
    (EE) No devices detected.
From what I understand, I need the nouveau-drm package installed, which no longer exists in the repos. The nouveau-drm-lts package gives dependency errors:
warning: cannot resolve "kernel26-lts>=2.6.32", a dependency of "nouveau-drm-lts"
warning: cannot resolve "kernel26-lts<2.6.33", a dependency of "nouveau-drm-lts"
Seems this is because those packages are no longer named "kernel" but "linux" instead.
I've also tried using the proprietary nvidia driver, but I need the legacy 93xx driver, which the nvidia page in the Arch Wiki states it does not support Xorg 1.11.

  • [SOLVED] Boot Resolution with Intel Haswell GPU and KMS

    Dear All,
This thread is a follow up of this one: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189562. I created a new thread as I think the focus of the problem has shifted and the old title might be misleading and lead to helpful people ignoring the thread. I hope this is ok. Please correct me if I did not behave correctly.
I think most of the "flashes" I see come from X switching from native resolution (3200x1800) which is used when starting, to 1920x1080, which I set in the configuration file.
So my question is: how can I have the 1920x1080 resolution at boot (i.e. during early boot, using the KMS and including the i915 driver in mkinitcipo?):
    I tried:
    1) Creating the configuration file in xorg.conf.d and including it into the mkinicpio
    2) Setting the GRUB_GFX_MODE
    3) Using the EDID method (with built-in resolution 1920x1080) as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ke … s_and_EDID
    4) Using uvesafb as described in the WIKI: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/uvesafb
Nothing worked. X starts during boot always with the same native resolution, the switches to 1920x1080 when GDM starts. Can you please suggest a method to set the boot resolution? It is for sure technically possible as Ubuntu does it when installed on the same hardware.. I think I just haven't found a way...

Ok, answering my own question, it would appear that adding video=1920x1080 does the trick. However, I still see a lot of flashing (I think that people call it flickering)

  • Word template with web service - style and font not considered

    Hi experts.
I'm using a word template with a web services.
So i've added my xml tags in the template and i've tried to change the font and style but when i launch the document, what i have defined is never considered. For example if i set in a table that a line should be in Italic, when i edit the document no text is in italic ?
Did you ever faced this kind of issue ?
How did you manage to set you style to the xml tags ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I also had similar problems but I didn't work on word template for quite a long time. But at that time I solved the problem with formating the word and not the xml tag directly.
For example: I wrote the word lastname and formated it to for exampe, bold and italic like lastname. After thet I selected the word and applied the xml tag to that word and this worked just fine.
    Regards.

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.

Please can someone help me to solve the error message "Could not activate cellular data network: PDP authentication failure"when using 3G or GPRS on safari with an iphone 4GS and latest software updates. I have tried resetting the network and phone settings. I have restored the factory settings on itunes and still the problem persists.

All iPhones sold in Japan are sold carrier locked and cannot be officially unlocked by the carrier. If you unlocked it, it was by unauthorized means (hacked), and support cannot be given to you in this forum.
Hacked iPhones are subject to countermeasures by Apple, particularly when updating the firmware. It is likely permanently re-locked or permanently disabled.

  • Easier and better ways to solve current problems with Acrobat?

Is there no better and easier way to solve the problems (installation, re-installing and crashing) with Acrobat? I really think that the ball is in Acrobat's corner right now, because I should not (for example) need to deactivate and re-activate my subscription in order to get AcrobatPro XI to work on my computer, let alone deinstalling an older version that (for now) does work, risking that in the end neither of them work. I need the (great) AdobeCloud applications to do my work as a freelancer, and I really cannot afford this kind of trouble with my applications, nore loose time repairing them. These are difficult times as it is.
    Regards,
    Marc

Sorry, I can't. When I installed it there was no message that said I had to deinstall the old version first, and with other Adobe CC applications there had been no trouble at all, so I installed it with The previous version still on my computer.
After installing, neither of them would start up properly, so I deinstalled version XI, after which the old version worked again, but my Adobe Application Manager does not let me download the XI version a second time, so I cannot try again.
    Regards,
    Marc

The description of the issue you originally presented isn't something that I've seen happen to Acrobat when installed as a part of Creative Cloud.
Could you provide a specific description of the behavior that occurs when you launch Acrobat XI now?
    Thanks,
    David

  • [SOLVED] Problem with privileges (nm-applet and mounting devices)

    Hi,
I have a little problem after a system update made a few weeks ago. (At least I think it started after that update, but I am not sure.)
It's something related to lack of privileges or sth...
When I right-click on nm-applet icon some options are greyd out as well as when I try to add a new network - everything in the dialog is grey. But when I "sudo nm-applet", everything works.
And the next problem is: When I plug my USB stick/drive to NB it is not mounted automatically but I need to open nautilus, mount it manually and an "Authenticate" dialog shows up and my password is required. But why? It didn't use to work that way. I don't understant what might have changed.
I use SLiM starting my gnome-session.
    My ~/.xinitrc:
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session
    My /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-fallback.session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-settings-daemon;
    RequiredProviders=windowmanager;
    DefaultProvider-windowmanager=compiz
    DefaultProvider-notifications=notify-osd
    DefaultProvider-displaymanager=slim
    (I don't use gnome-shell nor gnome-panel, but Gnome with xfce4-panel )
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you, headkase, you were right about it! Removing "ck-launch-session" solved my problems. I also removed "dbus-launch" because I didn't have it there originally, I had added "dbus-launch" to exec line just today as I had read somewhere that it might help (it didn't)...
So, I'm going with "exec gnome-session" and everything works, thanks.
//Edit: Admin can mark this as "[SOLVED]"

    HI Emmet,
thanks so much for your posts back. I really appreciate it and yes that does help to know that you could not get it working.
I did have some success, in removing the SSL Authentication checkbox in the smtp server settings - I found that this allowed my friend to be able to send mail from the mail app via his sbcglobal (yahoo) account.
So that did help but of course the messages do not have ssl encryption and I'm not sure how big a deal that is for an individual. He is able to receive mail but unless the SSL authentication box is unchecked, he cannot send.
i hope that helps anyone out there also!
Thanks also for the tip about sparrow - yes I have heard of it and it is very popular, he may end up using that in the end.
    Thanks again, much appreciated.
