[SOLVED] Silent Boot - Systemd not shutting up

I have followed all the instructions over here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Silent_boot
I have done everything. But Systemd still won't fully shut up. There is a line on every boot: "Starting version 218" (I believe it is stating systemd's version)
I don't think I get this message on my previous arch installation about 2 years ago.
The Arch installation is fresh and fully updated.
I am using rEFInd as my boot loader. Here is the menu entry that I use
menuentry "Arch Linux" {
icon /EFI/refind/icons/os_arch.png
volume Boot
loader /vmlinuz-linux
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
graphics on
options "root=UUID=4b3977bd-a39f-46ab-980f-648c695a0554 rootfstype=ext4 rw add_efi_memmap quiet loglevel=3 vga=current rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1 "
Anybody know how to get rid of this?
At the very least anybody know who is spewing this line? systemd? rEFInd?
Thanks.

  • [SOLVED]Silent boot remove autologin message.

    Hi,
    I tried booting directly to X with silent boot, autologin and startx at login, everything was fine but the only thing that appears on screen before getting into X is "Arch linux version and autologin message" and then startx is executed automatically and its output is redirected to /dev/null so no woories about startx output.
    So I want to remove displaying arch linux version (tty1), autologin message.

    For autologin, you had to modify agetty's command line. Reading its man page is a good start. It tells you how to stop it from displaying the contents of the /etc/issue file (that's the first line you see) and it tells you that it invokes /bin/login, but then the "login:" part is also a good hint. So, check login's man page; there's some stuff about hushlogin that seems like a good bet. See how quiet you can get it with that.

  • [Solved] Syslinux boots but not loads completely

    Since my last update, 2 weeks ago, syslinux in my root partition doesn't completely loads. I've tried to mount the root partition and reinstall and edit again the syslinux but it didn't work. I don't know what to else to do to repair it.

    Please provide much more detail.
    How far does it get in booting?  Do you see the syslinux menu, or does it not get that far?  Are there any error messages or output?  If so, post them.
    What do you mean you've mounted the root partition and editted "the syslinux"?  I assume you booted a live medium to do maintainance, but what did you reinstall (`pacman -S syslinux`, or `syslinux-install_update -i -a -m`?)  Did you also mount your boot partition when you were doing this maintainance?
    Also, if you can check your logs to see what you updated two weeks ago, that may help.  But if you only update every few weeks, it will likely be just about everything updated.

  • IMQ Broker Not Shutting Down on Win 2000 Server Re-boot

    I am using a Windows 2000 Server and have found that during a re-boot the Broker Service (3.5 SP1) is not shutting down completely. The following lines are missing from the log entry created when restarting the server: -
    [17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1093]: Shutdown requested by broker administrator
    [17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1047]: Shutting down broker...
    [17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1077]: Broadcast good-bye to all connections ...
    [17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1078]: Flushing good-bye messages ...
    [17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1063]: Done
    [17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1048]: Shutdown of broker complete.
    [17/Aug/2004:12:55:55 BST] [B1066]: Closing: [email protected]:1108->admin:1074. Count=0
    [17/Aug/2004:12:55:58 BST].
    If the Broker service is manually stopped through Services the entries are placed into the log file.
    The problem being created is the broker lock file is not cleared when service is not shutdown completely and when the server is restarted the broker service is then unable to launch as it believes an instance of the service is already running. When the lock file is deleted the broker service can be started.
    Has anyone experienced this problem before and found a solution?
    If any further information is required in this log then please update with required details.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Dave.

    Thanks Joe,
    Please read to the end. Thanks to your suggestions I believe I have found the cause of the IMQ Broker problems I was experiencing.
    As you suggested by adding the line: -
    imq.hostname=257s-bs1a
    to the end of the IMQ config.properties file this seems to have worked around the problem shutting down and restarting the IMQ Broker.
    Following numerous server restarts the IMQ Broker Service had restarted with Windows successfully. However, I was unable to successfully access the Data Distribution Page.
    Further investigation showed the server was using a leased IP address and not static.
    I removed the 'imq.hostname' line added earlier and changed the server IP address to static. When the server was rebooted I found the IMQ Service had started successfully. On several successive re-boots the IMQ Broker service restarted with Windows correctly.
    To check if this was related to having a dynamic IP address of the server was changed back to Dynamic. Following the first re-boot of the server IMQ had started successfully. On the second re-boot of the server with Dynamic IP the IMQ Broker service did not restart. Following additional re-boots with a dynamic IP address the IMQ Broker service did not restart.
    With the IP address changed back to static the server was re-booted. Following the first re-boot the IMQ Broker service had not restarted. Following subsequent re-boots with a static IP address the IMQ Broker service did restart.
    Thank you Joe for pointing me in the correct direction.
    Regards,
    Dave.

  • [Solved] Silent LUKS boot

    [Synopsis] Create a hook as shown below to silence the kernel.
    I'd like to have a truly silent boot as in the Wiki but it only seems to address the login prompt.
    I would also like to get rid of the (USB) boot messages pollution of the the LUKS password prompt for my encrypted root. Is there some configuration of the initramfs required to accomplish this? If so, what exactly would that be?
    I should add that I boot the STUB EFI kernel so there's no bootloader as such.

    I created the hook shown below to silence the kernel and now the LUKS prompt is clean.
    /usr/lib/initcpio/hooks/hushkernel
    #!/usr/bin/ash
    # https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1312342#p1312342
    run_hook() {
    # http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/44999/how-can-i-hide-messages-of-udev/45525#45525
    # The four values in printk denote: console_loglevel, default_message_loglevel, minimum_console_loglevel and default_console_loglevel respectively.
    # These values influence printk() behavior when printing or logging error messages. See 'man 2 syslog' for more info on the different loglevels.
    # • console_loglevel: messages with a higher priority than this will be printed to the console
    # • default_message_level: messages without an explicit priority will be printed with this priority
    # • minimum_console_loglevel: minimum (highest) value to which console_loglevel can be set
    # • default_console_loglevel: default value for console_loglevel
    #define KERN_EMERG "<0>" /* system is unusable */
    #define KERN_ALERT "<1>" /* action must be taken immediately */
    #define KERN_CRIT "<2>" /* critical conditions */
    #define KERN_ERR "<3>" /* error conditions */
    #define KERN_WARNING "<4>" /* warning conditions */
    #define KERN_NOTICE "<5>" /* normal but significant condition */
    #define KERN_INFO "<6>" /* informational */
    #define KERN_DEBUG "<7>" /* debug-level messages */
    echo "3 3 3 3" > /proc/sys/kernel/printk
    /usr/lib/initcpio/install/hushkernel
    #!/bin/ash
    build() {
    add_runscript
    help() {
    cat <<HELPEOF
    This hook will suppress kernel messages during the boot LUKS password prompt

    Wow, that solved this problem. I had 5 GB of systemd logs. I deleted them (after making a backup on another disk), I limited the journal size to only 50MB, and now NetworkManager only lasts 4 seconds to start, and GDM appears 10 seconds earlier. Thanks a lot

    My screen says boot device not found. Please install an operating system on hard drive. What could have caused this problem? Help!!!!!

    Hi,
    Can you post back with the following.
    1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of the notebook - see Here for a further explanation.
    2.  The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 32bit ).
    3.  Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive.  Post back with the details of any error messages.

  • Mac Book Pro (OS 10.4.11) WILL NOT SHUT DOWN UNLESS FORCED! HELP!!!

    My Mac Book Pro 15", 2.33 GHz, 3 GB memory - runninfg Mac OS X 10.4.11 WILL NOT SHUT DOWN UNLESS FORCED! HELP!!!
    When I use the SHUT DOWN command in the Apple Menu - programs close, the screen goes to a blue screen with a revolving time indicator and then remains that way until I FORCE SHUT DOWN by pressing the power button - then after a it makes the sound the screen goes black. I have restarted the machine several times and run disk doctor from the start up disk - no problems are recognized. The problem started last night. I upgraded to Mac OS 10.4.11 today - hoping that the update would resolve the issue - NO LUCK! I keep trying to get a successful SHUT DOWN from the apple command - However I have not been able to get it to SHUT DOWN without forcing the power button. HELP!

    "... and run disk doctor from the start up disk"
    Please explain that one. Disk Doctor was part of Norton Utilities. NU is not supported by OSX and the faster you get rid of it the better. Boot from your Installer disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utilities. An optional way of shutting down is holding down control-option-command keys and pressing the eject button. When you are having problems address the problem. Upgrading to a new OS version will not solve the problem.
    Wht you should try is running the 10.4.11 intel combo updater here:

  • VB Process Does Not Shut Down After Attaching VM

    I am using the axbridge with Java 1.5.0_02 to embed a swing GUI into a VB app. When I close the VB app, the window disappears, but the process is still running.
    I believe that part of the reason why I've encountered this problem lies in the way the VB app is implemented. The app is a COM out-of-process server brought up from Excel using...
    Object m_tool = CreateObject("VBapp.ToolClass").
    To bring down the app, m_tool is set to "Nothing". COM then realizes that no one is holding a reference to anything in the server the VB app is running as, and the server is shut down by COM. Unfortunately, a thread still seems to be running, so the process doesn't die.
    Doing a System.exit() or some other equivalent would certainly take care of the process, but it doesn't make sense for my addition to the greater application to descide when the application should be killed. I need Java to shut down cleanly.
    Here's why I think Java is not shutting down cleanly. Upon inspecting the process, I find one thread that is still running. Here's a trace of the stack for that thread.

    Notice that it looks like we have a call from Java to native code going on.
    Java_com_sun_deploy_util_UpdateCheck_handleUserResponse
    I believe the UpdateCheck class has something to do with checking to see if there is a Java version update to be had, but I don't really know for sure. I've tried turning off the auto-update feature through the Java control panel, but that doesn't solve the problem. Does anyone have any info. that might shed some light on what's going on here?

    I would definitely have given it longer than a minute.
    OS X does quite a few things during a shutdown routine. It clears caches, updates them for the next boot, etc. Sometimes this process can take a bit, especially after software updates or major system changes.
    Try shutting down again and see if the problem persists. If the computer doesn't turn off immediately, give it a few minutes before holding down the power button.

  • Help Please B/W G3 crashed and will not shut down...

    My old back-up B/W G3 crashed and will not shut down. After the crash my wife who was working on it attempted to restart it and all that happens is the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning dial (not multi-colored wheel). This actually happened a few months ago and I've just been using my MacBook instead, but realized there was still some info that we needed to retrieve from the G3.
    The only way to shut down is to unplug. I replaced the Lithium 3.6V battery but that didn't help. I tried holding down the apple, command + P, R keys for the 3 chimes and that didn't solve it. I have no clue what else to do. I would love to somehow be able to at least download the info from the hard drive(s), but have no idea if the drives may be corrupted.
    Please help with any advice. Many thanks.
    RK

    You can also try two other methods of Disk repair, without the Install CD:
    • Boot up while holding down the Shift key at startup. This forces the Mac to check and Repair its Hard Drive as it boots up, and does not load most extensions. This is called Safe Boot or Safe Mode.
    • Boot up Darwin in Single-user mode by Holding down Command and S at startup. When the messages stop scrolling, and it appears to prompt you for input, type:
    fsck -fy
    which forces it to check the disk, even if it is journaled.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
    Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • V570 Not shutting down fully

    I have an issue with my laptop, a Lenovo V570 (processor: Intel(R) Core i5-2410M CPU @ 2.3GHz, 6GB RAM, 64 bit) running windows 7 home premium that I need some advice with if possible. When I shut down it does what it should do, ie: log off, turns the screen off, but does not shut down completely as the fan stays on and the power button remains lit until the battery runs flat. I have to push and hold the power button for about 6 seconds to force it to shut down completely. I don't get any error messages on shut down or on start up. These are the things I have tried:
    I restored my laptop to an earlier date before the problem started
    Took the battery out for an hour or two
    Restarted without the battery, just power cable plugged in and shut down
    Started in safe mode and tried to shut down but the computer froze (I tried this 3 times)
    Tried to do a clean boot with msconfig.exe but when I try and make changes in the system configuration as recommended by the Microsoft instructions my computer freezes and tells me msconfig.exe is not responding (also tried 3 times).                                                                                                                                                                                        All the above have not solved the problem, does anyone have any other suggestions for me?

    Swahili,
    This is a really odd problem.  I working on something similar on an X200 with Win 7 except that in my case it will shut down completely and power off, however suspend and hibernation do not work as intended - they blank the screen but the fan and system continue to run.  I'm still working on it - I've tried updating all Lenovo and Windows updates, with focus on BIOS and Power manager, reloaded BIOS defaults, etc.   I may try swapping in another drive with a clean image to test to try to rule out hardware.
    Recommendations for you to try the basics...
    1) Try BIOS update, reload system defaults (F9 I believe, save and exit)
    2) Uninstall and reinstall energy cut power managment.  Reboot after the uninstall.  Try to get the newest version from our support site.
    Let's go from there...

  • Help! PowerBook G4 will not shut down using normal methods!

    Recently, my PowerBook G4 Aluminum (1.5/1.67 GHz) will not shut down. It has recently started doing this. When I choose any of the shut down, restart, log out items in the  (apple) menu, it will not bring up a dialog. Same with pushing power button. I have to do sudo reboot in the Terminal to make it shut off, or otherwise I can just hold the power button. Tried resetting PRAM. Recently downloaded a few apps. Can anyone help?
    -The Mac Bot

    It's been a long time since I've revisited this...
    Reinstalled OS due to main account getting corrupted. Could not log in.
    That did not resolve the corrupted account, so I booted up with command-S and issued a few commands to reset and force the Setup Assistant to run. That worked, allowed me to login and start fresh.
    That did not solve the not shutting down problem.
    I am able to "lock" the system (using MacLoc) and shut down from the login window.
    Or if I have Fast User Switching enabled I can choose "Login Window..." from the menu, and shut down from there.
    A long time ago, I edited a few .nib files inside /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow/Contents/Resources.
    A reinstall replaced those files with the originals.
    Still cannot shut down by pressing power button and clicking Shut Down, or choosing log out, shut down, or restart from the apple menu.
    Important clue: If I press Shift-Command-Q (the log out hotkey) the window I am working with dims as if another window popped up, but no other window popped up.

  • Can not shut down late 2011 MacBook Pro and turn it back on again without the hard drive disappearing?

    Ok, I have searched for months for an answer to this question to no avail, probably because no one has experienced it before. I am hoping however that you guys can help me figure this one out cause it is driving me nuts! Also, I am not entirely sure what section of the support I should put this under so if I stick it in the wrong place, I apologize.
    Right now my problem is very simple. When I turn off my laptop, and then try to turn it back on, my internal hard drive disappears... and I get the blinking folder with a question mark on it. I have figured out something interesting however. I have an install disk with Ubuntu Linux on it. If I boot into that first, then RESTART the laptop, not shut down and turn back on, it reads the internal hard drive just fine and I can boot as if there is nothing wrong.
    Second part to the problem... If I allow the laptop in either OSX or Windows to go to sleep (aka shut off the hard drive but the computer remains on), when I attempt to wake it up, I am greeted with the usual log in screen of whichever OS I am in, but is frozen and after a few seconds goes black and restarts the computer to find that... Surprise! The hard drive is gone
    I have tried every trick in the book that I can think of, but can not seem to come up with a solution to the problem... I know when the problem happened and if anyone thinks that that will help them figure this out I will type everything I did up till, including the crash that caused this, and my attempted fixes, but I have class right now so only if you guys want it I will type all that out.
    What I am currently running is:
    2011 MacBook Pro 13in screen
    4Gb of Ram
    1TB internal Hard Drive
    OSX 10.11.whatever the newest update is... just updated the other day again.
    Windows 8.1 on BootCamp 5 (yea I know its not supposed to work but it does) again, fully updated
    Ubuntu 13.10 (I think? Doesn't really matter, its just an install disk I use to boot the computer)
    If there is anything else that you guys need me to provide, I can, just simply ask. I can provide as much info as is necessary.

    Sorry it took me so long to write back, But unfortunately this didn't help my issue.
    My uncle and I did a lot of tests on this computer and have narrowed down the location of the problem a little bit.
    We tried to first reset the SMC and the NVRAM as suggested, but the only thing that did was make the fans run on full tilt for the first session after restarting it for some reason. After that we tried re installing OSX over the OSX that was already on the system (not removing any of the files). This also didn't do anything but make refit stop working. Then we moved onto the next task at hand by removing the hard drive entirely and booting it as an external drive from one of the USB ports... as long as you booted it with the options key held down, it worked perfectly fine. Then we put an alternative hard drive into the computer and installed OSX on that. This time there was no trouble booting anything up. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. So we made a backup of my original drive (OSX, Windows, and all) onto an external hard drive and tested booting to it via USB. That again worked perfectly fine and booted right up with no problems. So after that we formatted the original hard drive and reinstated OSX. We then proceeded to transfer all the old files from the backup onto this new installation and LOW AND BEHOLD..... we were back to square one with it refusing to recognize the hard drive again.
    So this basically told us that there appears to be something either wrong with the hard drive, or something got really screwed up in the software along the lines and by me copying all my old files back over, I just ended up bringing the screwed up file back over with it! (despite not copying over any settings of any kind) So I am still extremely confused as to what is going wrong... did some boot sector possibly get screwed up may be?
