[SOLVED] SIS Driver Problem after Upgrade

I have an old custom-built desktop machine based on an ASRock motherboard using an SIS 741GX chipset and integrated Mirage graphics.
I have the xf86-video-sis driver installed, and all worked well until a recent update. The xorg-server now fails with a segmentation fault. I understand this is due to incompatibility with the video driver and version 1.13 of xorg-server.
I would be grateful for some advice on the best way to proceed. Should I downgrade xorg, or is there a better strategy?
Many thanks in advance.

Now that's what I call service!!!!
The new version of xf86-video-sis (just appeared on the extra repo this afternoon) fixes the problem.
An enormous thank-you to JGC and the other devs.
May Santa be kind to you all

  • Optical drive problems after upgrade to Tiger 10.4.10

I've just had my machine updated to Tiger 10.4.10 after having two new hard drives installed after a hard drive failure. I'm now having issues with burning data for backup purposes.
I can't burn anything with Mac OS Disc Burner utility, it doesn't seem to recognize blank disc's DVD's or CD's. It keeps telling me to load a disc when one is already in the drive.
System profiler recognizes CD-R's & DVD-R's when they are in the optical drive
I can burn with Toast Titanium ver 6.0.3 DVD's & CD's. The burned CD's will mount. The burned DVD's will not mount.
I have checked the burned DVD's in the optical drive of my iBook G4 Mac OS 10.3.9 and they mount on it fine.
Movie DVD's will mount & play. Software DVD's will mount and load applications.
I have cleaned the drive with a cleaning disc.
The Optical Drive was working fine before the upgrade, so what is the problem?
I can only assume two problems now!
1.) the optical drive has a physical malfunction
2.) there is a software issue between Tiger 10.4.10 & this optical drive (this is my favorite at the moment)
The upgrade was done by an Apple Authorised Service Provider they say there are no issues with Tiger & the optical drive.
So any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem. I bought my G5 with Panther OS on it a few years ago. The DVD drive functioned perfectly back then. Then I upgraded to Tiger this past year which caused the DVD drive to open later..that is, I'd have to hold down the eject button for a good 2 or 3 seconds before it would open or close. Previously it responded instantly. Now what happens more and more is it can't read DVD-ROM disks that it has burned. My imac G4 with Jaguar has no trouble reading the disks but Tiger 10.4.9 and 10.4.10 simply refuse to mount DVD ROM disks that it burned.
I'm trying to make a duplicate DVD of the offending disk on my single-processor G4 and then put THAT disk into the G5 so it can read the info. Hopefully that will be my work-around.
It's got to be a software issue and I keep hoping the Apple wiz kids will put out an update to remedy this. Something's fishy with the DVD drive programming.

    You didn't have mesa before?!
For a newbie what was the reason to omit this part of the Beginners Guide:
    Install mesa for 3D support:
    # pacman -S mesa
Anyway, glxinfo is inside of a package called mesa-demos (it takes 5 seconds to google it).
Did you removed nouveau as I implied earlier?
Am I getting this right: Arch was working for you since october and something broke in recent days? If so you should have blind idea what could be the reason. Did you changed anything recently? It happened after system upgrade? But first things first: remove nouveau completely  (and maybe reinstall nvidia to see what pacman will say about it). Better yet read some of many threads about it. Most notably this one And for christ sake don't use --force switch or I won't be trying to help you anymore.

  • CD ROM drive problem after upgrade to 10

Had Solaris 8, worked fine for years. Upgrade to 10 an now the CD rom drive does not work properly. When you put in ANY CD, it goes in, spins for about 30 seconds, then the door opens and stays open. No file manager windows open, I cannot access the drive. Happens in the CDE and Java desktops. When I put a CD in and go Application_Manager-System_Manager, Eject CD ROM in that 30 seconds the disc stays in, I get an error:
    date-9/usr/dt/bin/dtexec) sh
cdrom0: no such file or directory
when I try mount cdrom0, get mount point cannot be determined.
I have other problems with the OS but to fix those, I need the CDROM drive!
    Any suggestions?

    svcadm enable smserver
and that started it right up. Since that worked, I
added the line to the /profile file so now it loads
upon logging onYou should only need to enter that line once, not every time you log in.
Also, I only saw that bug in an older solaris express build (pre-FCS). Are you using Solaris 10 FCS?

  • [solved] various X problems after upgrade

I did an upgrade last night and when I restarted this morning I had a couple of problems so thought I'd document them just in case anyone else had them.
First off gdm didn't start. The xorg log complained about this line in my xorg.conf
    RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
so I edited the file and commented it out.
I then did a startx and everything started ok but both my mouse and keyboard were frozen. All the apps started up ok.
The last line in the xorg log file was this so I did some googling but didn't find much
config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))
After some other random searches I found someone else complaining of the same problem, their fix was to add this to the xorg.conf
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
    EndSection
I added those lines, started X and it now works fine. I still have the config error at the end of the xorg log so I guess that is something else unrelated.
Hope this helps anyone else in the same situation.

I've got evdev installed and I know it is working because my keyboard mappings are now all bust! It seemed to be working until after 7 hours of use and in the middle of an important voip call with a client the same lockup happened again. No alt-tab, no change window focus etc.
How can I use xorg 1.5 without evdev? I've tried with the work around line in and it still locks up.

  • [SOLVED] xorg / nvidia problems after upgrade

    Hello,
I have recently done an upgrade with pacman -Syu and am having problems.
When X starts, it hangs at a blank screen. Keyboard is frozen and I am unable to hit another tty.  I can ssh in, but I cannot even seem to kill X, or reboot. I am forced to do a hard reboot.
I have tracked the problem down to running multiple X sessions. I currently have 4 monitors, and have them configured such that I have 2 X sessions, (2 monitiors with twinview on each session).  I can get things working on 2 monitors using twinview, but I cannot get X to start properly if I enable the second X session. (I have tried everything and cannot get anything to come up unto a third monitor... I can only get X working on 2..)
This seems like it could be a bug. Although I am not sure if the problem is with X or with the nvidia drivers, as both were updated, however I am thinking it is an issue with X.
I have checked and rechecked my xorg log files, and there are no errors, however, once I did see this error, but it did not happen consistently..
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop
Any suggestions?  I would like even be happy with downgrading some packages to get this working again.

Since downgrading xorg-server didn't help, I decided to try installing the latest and greated nvidia drivers. I grabbed them from their website, and uninstalled the nvida package from arch. (Version 190.53.1).  The drivers I am currently running are 195.36.15 and all is well.
Instead of installing non-managed packages, why not use nvidia-beta and nvidia-utils-beta from the AUR?

  • Nvidia driver problem after upgrade kernel

After kernel update to 3.10.10 do not start X. I use nvidia proprietary drivers.

same thing happened to me. The maintainer should have had linux-3.10.10 depend on nvidia-325.15-5.
Instead, he probably just thought he would upload them at the same time hoping that it would be ok.
Obviously mirrors sync differently, and we both got screwed. Luckily I could still get to a VT, and upgrade after the nvidia pkg synced.

  • [SOLVED] odd audio problem after upgrade w/ VIA VT82xx

Everything was working splendidly until I did pacman -Syu the other day.
Now, sound plays VERY faintly (so much so that you can barely hear it on full volume), and there's audible (but faint) static in the background.  It's ALL sound -- doesn't matter what program I use or whether it goes through ALSA, OSS, or Pulse.  The weird part is that the static gets stronger when my machine does work: if I shut down, for example, the static seems to go along with the disk write noise.  Also, you'd think it'd either work or not work instead of halfway working.
Volumes are all set properly.  I ran alsaconf to no avail.  I get no errors in dmesg, or when I run a program to play audio.
I'm assuming the culprit is the 2.6.30 kernel upgrade, but I'm not entirely sure, as like I said, I upgraded all packages.

    same issue if:

    Digged a bit:

makes me doubt if this issue is related to the modules not found. Which is the single indication I found so far x-/
Any light on where can the issue comes from? hardware is pretty much standard even if getting a bit old. Never had Xorg related issue so far on this pancake.

  • Problems after upgrade: Leopard to Leopard no longer works

My sister upgraded to Leopard on her iMac(c2d) to Leopard yesterday. Earlier in the day we were able to do video chats with a number of people(her machine Tiger to Fathers machine Leopard). However, since upgrading, we've experienced weird behavior for video chats. Basically in her window she won't see her image(the small one), and I don't see her at all. We've tested this out with a number of other iChat accounts and get the same results. Btw, all machines that are chatting with her are using Leopard. Also, all other forms/capabilities work: screen sharing, sharing of pictures, audio chats.
Anyone out there have similar problems after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard? I have done the usual adjustments of bandwidth and QT settings, as well as restarts. What else should I try?
    tia,
    n

I finally resolved this problem: I think the issues/steps would be helpful for anyone who experiences iSight off or not working problems after upgrading to Leopard(then to 10.5.1) on a intel 20" iMac :
    Problem:
-If you have an internal iSight on an iMac and your camera works fine in Tiger
    -If you upgrade to Leopard
-If Chat camera doesn't show your image (iSight off) even though the green light is on
-You can see the other persons video on iChat
-Your friends can here you and you can share screens, files, etc.....everything but have them see you
These are the initial steps I took:
    - Deleted the pLists(or stored preferences for the Application) described at the top of this thread
    - Was told it might be slow internet connection so did various things: disconnected other computers, changed wireless to "G" only
    - Specifically Opened of ports spec'd for Leopard on router (even though I hadn't needed to do this under Tiger)
    - Tried chats with various people on various fast/slow networks
    - Restarted all aspects of the network: router, wireless access point, computer
    - Checked to see if the iSight was shown in 'System Profiler'. It was found in 'About This Mac->More Info->System Profiler->USB'
    - Clicked Video icon in iChat Buddies window(to the right of your name) and coudn't see my image
    - Opened 'PhotoBooth' and coudn't see my image(black screen)
    - Opened iMovie and couldn't capture video via the iSight(black screen)
    - Opened iChat->Preferences->Video and couldn't see my image
    - Validated that 'Camera is Enabled' in iChat->Video->Camera is Enabled
If you are experiencing a similar problem with you built-in iSight, I would probably focus on the last 5 things that I did. What they showed me was that the iSight was just not capturing video even though it was capturing sound in 3 different applications.
The solution to iSight Off or iSight Not Responding or No Video is......reset your computer! I had thought my sister performed this but it turns out she hadn't. Here's the link to this procedure:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Very easy to do though: Power off computer and unplug all cables, including power cable for at least 15 seconds. Plug everything back in and power up the computer and retry clicking on the 'Video' icon next to your login name. If you see yourself then...problem is solved.
While I eventually found posts in several other forums, it took me the better part of a week. To try this simple step. I wish I had done so straight away. Oy. I guess I learned a lot about ports, speed etc.
    I hope this helps.

  • Permission problems after upgrade to 10.5 on early Power PC G5 Tower

Permissions problems after upgrading to 10.5 on a client power PC (early) G5 tower.
Problems include folders that are created on XServe via this client do not allow any one else including this client to access. All other clients running 10.5, which happen to be newer Intel machines do not have this problem. Repairing permissions, updating to 10.5.1, try to manually correct permissions have all failed to repair the situation. All clients log onto the XServe with the same user/password. This client has since been downgraded back to 10.4.9 and has no issues.
The Xserve runs 10.3.9, any help would be greatly appreciated.
We have read through the forums regarding permission problems after upgrading and even tried some tips found here.

You really should check things out first before speaking.
    Here are the requirements for 10.5;
Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard requires:
A Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or Power PC G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor
    512 MB memory or more
    A DVD drive for installation
9 GB of available disk space or more

iTunes no longer finds @TV, either in the Preferences/Apple TV pane, or in the Device List. Everything worked perfectly before the 7.5 upgrade. All other features and devices working fine. Have reviewed all postings and eliminated the possibility of firewall or port problems.

I have partially resolved the problem. Something with the 7.5 upgrade changed the network protocols being used by the Apple TV... switching to a wired network from end to end with a full shut down and reboot has the @TV back online... I am still working on trying to solve the wireless side of the equation.
