[Solved] slow logout from terminal

hi... just have set up a completely fresh arch install. and all of a sudden if i type "exit" it takes around 3 seconds. this happens in both, bash and zsh... but only on my user account. Any clue what might cause this?
*grr* it was the zsh history file... no clue why it affected my bash too, but its working now

  • [SOLVED] Random logout from Gnome 3

    Hi all,
For about a week now I have been experiencing random logouts while running Gnome 3. I can't find any connection with what I am doing at the time except *maybe* that the computer is under load (numerical simulations, sometimes running into Swap space). I found a few other posts saying it might be a Xorg server crash, so am posting the text from Xorg.0.log.old.
It seems there might be a problem with my nvidia driver... anyone have any experience with this?

Well, I can't say whether your logouts are caused by the nvidia driver, but there' s a way to figure that out - switch to Nouveau. Just for diagnostic purposes, you don't have to keep using it after you solve this, but the proprietary nvidia driver is giving trouble quite a few people, so I think it might be worth a shot.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot open display: . Problem from Terminal

    Hi,
I have a small problem with X I guess. I hope you can help me, as extensive googleling did not help.
I'm just configuring my arch install (newbie). Everything I have configured so far works great, the documentation is really good. I can start my xfce sessions an everything. However, I just wanted to look something up, when
    $ xfce4-about
    printed the following error:
    xfce4-about: Cannot open display: .
This happened from terminal, not within a xfce-session.
Does anyone have an idea how I should proceed to eliminate this minor problem?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Seems you can't run xfce4-about from the non-X terminal, just like you can't run firefox.

  • [solved] init 5 and logout from Xorg session -- crash

    Hi guys and gals!
Hope this is the right forum.
I have a strange issue here with restarting Xorg sessions. As long as I just boot up or use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to start and shutdown X, there's no problem at all, session manager (kdm) comes up properly and everything is just fine. But if I logout from the environment  (KDE3), Xorg crashes and I get a black screen with a blinking cursor or even full of strange y" symbols on vc/7.
On the other virtual consoles I'm able to run startx and this is still in runlevel 5!
Here are the last 50 lines from Xorg.0.log after such a crash:

Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks.

It's probably a nvidia bug, but there is a workaround given at the end of the other thread.

  • [Solved] Launch GUI application and detach it from terminal

Hello, I find it convenient launching apps from terminal, but after that I am unable to use the terminal, since it it's "attached" to the process. Some searching revealed 2 methods of doing this, but they both don't work for me
    1) add "&" after the command: upon closing the terminal the application closes as well; not what I want
    2) press ctrl+z: this just closes the app
So how do I type a command to launch a GUI app and continue using the terminal?
    I am using mate-terminal.

  • Cannot logout from account (10.7.4)

I have a special account that has admin privileges.
Recently I have noticed that if I select Logout from this account it closes down all the windows (it it should).
But then it goes to a blank screen and shows the small circle that cycles around (ie like on boot or startup)
It stays like this forever and the only way I can get around it is to force a power off
I did the Command R thing and verified the disk and fixed permissions but the problem remains.
I can do a restart or shutdown fine from this account, it is just that logout will not work
This does not affect other accounts.
I created a new admin account and that works fine.
Just wondered if there is some sort of corruption within the account?
Any suggestions on how I could fix this please?
    Thanks
    Peter

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • HT203998 If I login from one account and logout from them

If I login from one account and logout from them, I can not see the user which I made hidden using the above commands, but when I restart my mac I can see that hidden user on login screen, please help, I don't want to see the hidden user even after restart.

    Hi uddipatel,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  Here is how you hide a user account in the login window on your Mac:
How to hide a user account in OS X - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203998
Hide a user account in OS X Yosemite
You can prevent a user account from appearing in the login window in OS X Yosemite by using these steps:.
    1. Log in as an admin user.
    2. Use this Terminal command, substituting the short account name name of the user you wish to hide for “hiddenuser”:
    sudo dscl . create /Users/hiddenuser IsHidden 1
If you later want to show the hidden user, set the user’s IsHidden attribute to 0 like this:
    sudo dscl . create /Users/hiddenuser IsHidden 0
You can optionally delete the IsHidden attribute instead of setting it to 0.
    Additional Options
You can also move the hidden user's home directory to a place not visible from the Finder, and remove the hidden user's Public Folder share point.
The following command moves the home directory of "hiddenuser" to /var, a hidden directory:
    sudo mv /Users/hiddenuser /var/hiddenuser
The following command updates the user record of "hiddenuser" with the new home directory path in /var:
    sudo dscl . -create /Users/hiddenuser NFSHomeDirectory /var/hiddenuser
The following command removes the Public Folder share point for the user with the long name "Hidden User”:
sudo dscl . -delete "/SharePoints/Hidden User's Public Folder"
Hide a user account in earlier versions of OS X
There are three ways you can hide a user in versions of OS X earlier than Yosemite.
Set the Login window to display name and password fields
In the Users & Groups preferences pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier), click Login Options, then select "Display login window as: Name and password".
With this enabled, no user accounts are listed in the Login window.
If changing the Login Window to only display the name and password fields does not meet your needs, then you can use the following steps in this article to hide a user account.
Add users to the HiddenUsersList (advanced)
With Mac OS X v10.4 and later you can hide users from the Login window by adding them to the HiddenUsersList array in the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist file. The following command will hide the users "mei" and "anne" from the Login window:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow HiddenUsersList -array-add mei anne
Note: These users will still appear in the Accounts (Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier) or Users & Groups (OS X Lion) pane in System Preferences.
Lower the user's UID and enable the Hide500Users option (advanced)
You can use the advanced steps below to change a user's UID, adjust their home directory permissions and enable the Hide500Users option. An example user account "tom" is used below.
The following sample Terminal command changes the user tom's UID to 401. Note: Check to make sure the new UID is not in use before making this change.
    sudo dscl . -create /Users/tom UniqueID 401
This command adjusts the permissions of the user's home directory:
    sudo chown -R tom /Users/tom/
Enable the Hide500Users option with this command:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow Hide500Users -bool YES

  • Logout from OWA after clicking on Option

I'm running into an issue with my current users that I can't seem to solve. When user click on the options menu on the top right menu, they get automatically logged off. I tried looking online for solutions, but I haven't been to successful.

    Hi,
How many users are affected by this?
Try to let the user logon OWA with a different web browser, or on a different computer, does this issue persist? This step helps determine whether it's a browser or client related.
I also found some similar issues in our forums. Such as this one below:

Try some suggestions mentioned in the thread, like "check the authentication settings for OWA and ECP in IIS", or "reset the ecp virtual directory". Check if they are helpful.
By the way, in the current forum we mainly discuss questions and feedbacks about Outlook Client, since this issue is related to OWA, for further assistance I suggest you post the question in Exchange forum:

  • [SOLVED] auto-logout of tty1 after logout of desktop env. possible?

I don't know if I am missing something...
I have recently posted here about running X with different screen solutions: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=191255
I now added the auto-login configuration described here and that helps, except that when I logout, I am stuck at the tty1 console again as opposed to going straight back into auto-login and starting X. I know it's just a simple Ctrl+D to logout of the console, but I would prefer to:
    - logout of desktop environment
    - tty1 auto-logout
    - tty1 auto-login
Is there a way to do this?

    Trilby wrote:
We know what the issue is - but how you start X determines what will happen when it is done.  If you use the exec command as advised, you will be logged out of the tty as soon as X exits, and as you've set up autologin, you will be immediately logged back in.  I have this set up here - it works.
But hey, if you're so sure your problem couldn't possibly be solved, I'll leave you to be unhappy.
Not in my nature to be unhappy
So let me try to give you all the details of my setup:
I have setup autologin to the console, as described in Automatic login to virtual console.
Once logged in at the console, ~/.bash_profile starts my desktop environment Enlightenment.
    Here is my ~/.bash_profile:
    # ~/.bash_profile
    # If not running interactively, don't do anything
    [[ $- != *i* ]] && return
    # prompt
    export PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '
    # Auto-login to Enlightenment
    if [[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]]
    then
    # set default GUI browser
    export BROWSER=firefox
    # get RESOLUTION
    source ~/.RESOLUTION
    export RESOLUTION=$RESOLUTION
    # startx with xorg.conf file according to $RESOLUTION
    if [ $RESOLUTION = 'lowres' ]
    then
    echo "starting low-res setup"
    startx -- -config xorg.conf-2k
    else
    echo "starting hi-res setup"
    startx -- -config xorg.conf
    fi
    fi
As you can see, I have two different xorg.conf files, one (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) sets up my four-monitor xinerama display, the other (/etc/X11/xorg.conf-2k) sets up a "normal" HD resolution display. These both work as expected.
The file ~/.RESOLUTION simply contains this:
    RESOLUTION=hires
~/.bash_profile sources this file and sets the environment variable RESOLUTION, which is then used by ~/.xinitrc
My ~/.xinitrc file contains the following:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Arch Linux Default
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # start Enlightenment according to the
    # environment variable RESOLUTION
    if [ $RESOLUTION = 'lowres' ]
    then
    exec enlightenment_start
    else
    exec enlightenment_start -fake-xinerama-screen 3840x2400+0+0
    fi
I have created a script called resw that looks like this:

    # Script that pops up a zenity list menu
    # with a 'lowres' and 'hires' option. When
    # either is selected and 'OK' is clicked, the file '~/.RESOLUTION'
    # will change it's 'RESOLUTION' value to the one chosen, and
    # Enlightenment exits
    # Now .bash_profile and .xinitrc can use the RESOLUTION value
    # to act accordingly.
    RESOLUTION=`zenity \
    --title="Choose Resolution" \
    --width=680 --height=230 \
    --list --column="Variable" --column="Description" \
hires "Switch to high resolution [3840x2400]" \
lowres "Switch to low resolution [1920x1200]"`
    if [[ $RESOLUTION = 'hires' ]]
    then
    sed -i s/lowres/hires/ ~/.RESOLUTION
    enlightenment_remote -exit
    elif [[ $RESOLUTION = 'lowres' ]]
    then
    sed -i s/hires/lowres/ ~/.RESOLUTION
    enlightenment_remote -exit
    else
    exit 0
    fi
As you can probably make out from the comments in that file, this is what happens when I run the script:
    - A window with a selection-list pops up where I can choose "hires" or "lowres"
    - When I choose either of these, the script rewrites the file ~/.RESOLUTION accordingly
    - The script calls Enlightenment's "exit" function, which shuts down Enlightenment
    - Restarting Enlightenment now will have ~/.bash_profile and ~/.xinitrc use the value that's set in ~/.RESOLUTION to start Enlightenment with the corresponding xorg.conf or xorg.conf-2k file
Everything works as expected, but what I am trying to accomplish is, that Enlightenment will automatically restart after I use the script above.
A manual logout does that once back at the console (tty1). But I can not seem to trigger that logout from the script.
In other words, everything works as expected, but after the script runs and Enlightenment exits, I have to manually do Ctrl+D to logout, which in turn does the automatic login again.
I know it may sound a bit overkill... but it would really be nice to get this working.
In case you wonder: running a custom xrandr command or script does not work in my case. It did before, when I was running Enlightenment e17, but apparently they changed something—once Enlightenment is in xinerama mode, it stays there, no matter what xrandr sets. I have tried that before, but it didn't work and that's why I came up with the more complicated solution above which uses two different xorg.conf files and a conditional startup command for startx and enlightenment_start
I hope it all makes sense, I would really be happy to find a solution for this...

  • How can I determine which computer a share is connected to in /Volumes from terminal or a script?

I run a set of virtual machines via Fusion on an iMac that we run automated tests on for our website.  There is a folder on each VM called /Automation that is shared.
I have a python script that runs on the host, that will find an open VM, start it up and then mount the VM's /Automation folder.  So if there is only 1 VM powered on, the folder shows up in /Volumes as /Volumes/Automation.  The  problem is when there are 2 or more VM's powered on, because then the shares start being named /Volumes/Automation-1 and Automation-2 etc.  So my question is, how can I determine which computer each share belongs to from terminal or a script?
In other words, I'm looking for something like:
    /Volumes/Automation = "FirstVirtualMachineName.local"
    /Volumes/Automation-1 = "SecondVirtualMachineName.local"
Is there any way to determine which computer a mounted share is connected to?  In the past, I've just unmounted all /Automation folders, and then mounted them in a particular order, but that's unreliable and messy in my opinion.  If anyone knows a better way, please let me know.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

Well I think I have a workable solution.  It's not perfect, but I think it will do the trick. I can put a spotlight comment on the folder similar to 'HostName=OSX-Automation-1.local' and can then retrieve that value from our server with the following python snippet:
    import subprocess
    out,err = subprocess.Popen(['osascript','-e','tell application \"Finder\" to get comment of \"Macintosh HD:Volumes:Automation-1\"'],stdout=subprocess.PIPE, stderr=subprocess.PIPE).communciate()
So I could just loop through each 'Automation*' folder in /Volumes and grab the name from the spotlight attributes on the directories.  I don't think I really need to worry about the comments being overwritten, but I may have one of our launch daemons that run on the VM check that spotlight comment once a minute or something to ensure that the correct value is there.
If it ends up not working well in practice, I'm going to give your suggestion about a config script a shot.  It would require a little more up front work, but seems as if it would be pretty solid after that.
Thanks again for helping me think it through
