[SOLVED] snapshot of window in KDE

Hello.
How do I make a snapshot of window in KDE by a keyboard shortcut? I tried Alt+PrintScreen and it doesn't work. By PrintScreen I can capture the fullscreen (by Ksnapshot), but I don't know how to capture a window by the shortcut...
Anyone can help me?
Thanks a lot!

Well, in fact I changed the command in KDE Control Panel (Shortcuts and gestures) → Own shortcuts → Preset Actions → and on the right on the Action card, I modified the command to: ksnapshot --current.
Now it snapshot only a current window, not the whole desktop after pressing the PrintScreen. Problem solved :-)

  • [SOLVED] XFCE - Incorrect windows placement

    Hi,
    I'm currently having a issue with XFCE's window placement. In the settings panel, under Window Manager Tweaks > Placement, window placement is set to Center for all windows, but this option has no effect. I tried changing it to place windows under the mouse, but it also has no effect on the windows placement. Windows keep opening on the screen corners.
    I checked the forums for similar problems, and found some results, but none of the solutions worked for me. Also, those are quite old topics.
    [Solved] XFCE - Having Trouble Centering Windows
    [solved] Xfce4, new windows position
    Xfce 4.8 xfwm4 window placement settings no longer have any effect.
    This is not a big problem, but I'm kind of picky, so if anyone knows a solution to this problem, please share it.
    Best Regards,

    Shouldn't you actually have it on the maximum value?
    I believe the way this works is that the size (or ratio, the option is actually called placement_ratio IIRC and is a ratio of window size vs screen size) you specify here is the minimum to trigger "smart placement." If the window isn't (at least) of that size, then the default (i.e. center or under mouse pointer, as defined below) will be used. So if you want every window to use the default placement, you should set the minimum size for smart placement to be as large as possible. (In fact, I believe with a ratio set to 100 (i.e. slider to the max) it should always use the default placement, regardless of window size, which is want you're after if I'm not wrong.)
    If even with the slider to the max you get new windows placed using smart placement, then it sounds like a bug I'd say.
    (Also, just as FYI and though you might simply want all windows to be centered, I wasn't happy with xfwm's smart placement myself, you can see this topic for a (IMO) better alternative.)

  • [SOLVED] Cannot open any applicaiton, any window in KDE

    I did a fresh installation of Arch with KDE desktop.
    Often KDE stop opening windows/applications and it's happening frequently.
    I login to arch, do startx, KDE desktop shown, now if i try to open File Manager, Web browser or any other application it does not open. Even it doesn't show bouncing cursor notification.
    I tried to open system settings, it was also not opened.
    Any settings window from system tray also not shown/opened.
    I did Alt+F2 and tried to run Konsole but it says
    KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/konsole'
    To make it working again, i have to logout from X then again do startx.
    What could be the problem?

    How long does it take for KDE to "break"? Is it the same amount of time every time? Does it happen after you perform a specific action? (Start an application, insert a flash drive...)
    It happens as soon as i do login and then do startx
    Now I'm more confused. You said:
    samtech09 wrote:Often KDE stop opening windows/applications and it's happening frequently.
    samtech09 wrote:Once it logout and again do startx, it works normally and open applications.
    Does the problem happen often or always?
    How do you encounter the problem? Is it "startx... broken... startx... broken... startx... OH good, it's working this time" or "startx... use computer for 10 minutes... broken... logout... startx"?
    Here is content of ~/.bashrc
    Sorry, I'm an idiot! I meant, please post your "~/.xinitrc" file.

  • [solved]other window managers + KDE plasma apps

    Is there anyway to run kde plasma apps(not the whole plasma itself) with fluxbox? I have KDE 4 and fluxbox(*box,icewm) installed in my system. I usually work with KDE 4 whenever I dont require a frequent boot/logout(eg. when I am at work) and fluxbox when I know I am going to be doing a quick task. with KDE 3, I can access knetworkmanager, power manager as apps from fluxbox itself. I am wondering if I can do the same with kde4 plasma apps. Alternative for me is to use netcfg + conky + cal(terminal).
    I am in full support of kde 4 vision and find it more than productive for actual tasks. But what I see dangerous is more and more "real apps" itself are getting ported to plasma eg: laptop batter monitor and network manager. The problem is that I think I will not be able to use all these plasma apps in fluxbox without starting the whole plasma? I sincerely hope I am wrong.. Appreciate any inputs on this.

    Looks like I will not be able to  able to run plasmoids individually. Thanks for replies Primoz,moljac024 though I dont think its a crap..

  • Kate always open files in a new window after kde upgrade

    kate always open files in a new window, instead of the existing window as a new document after kde upgrade to 3.5. someone else have the same experience and have a solution for that ?
    cheers,
    notz

    The problem is solved!
    Apparently the Content Disposition: Attachment in the BLOB Download Format Mask does the trick.
    For some reason I have to logout and login again in the application to see the change.
    I tried changing the Content Disposition to Inline and then back to Attachment, and the file keeps opening in the same window unless I start a new session.
    Is there any explanation why it is working that way?
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] Resizing konsole window freezes computer

    Hello,
    I have a bit of a strange problem.  I am using KDE and whenever I resize the konsole window my computer freezes.  I am unable to even switch to different terminal screens at this point using Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc.  It doesn't always freeze completely; sometimes my screen gets pixels all over it the more I move any windows similar to a TV with no cable hooked up.  I think this started happening since my latest pacman upgrade but I can't be sure.  This happens only when desktop effects are enabled.  When desktop effects are disabled I get a black box drawn over  the top left corner of the screen that corresponds to the resizing of the konsole window.
    So far I have tried reinstalling konsole and the nvidia proprietary drivers.  This *only* happens when resizing the konsole window.
    I also noticed a that yaourt stopped working around the same time.  I get this error: "package-query: error while loading shared libraries: libyajl.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" when I try to search for anything.  Maybe it's related.
    I hope this makes sense.  It's definitely a strange one.  If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

  • [Solved] LXDE missing window borders (or decoratioins, widget?)

    Hello,
    The LXDE runs fine on my newly built arch for a couple of days, and then I must have done something (e.g. upgraded or uninstalled some packages) and now I can still log into LXDE by using slim login manager or startx command, but none of the applications will have the window borders and I am not able to move the application window around or minimize/resize the window.
    Here is my .xinitrc file
    [sgeuser@sge00 ~]$ cat .xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    FontPath /usr/share/fonts/100dpi
    xset -dpms
    xset s off
    exec /usr/bin/startlxde
    Here is my systemd journal since reboot:

    Thanks. The problem is solved.
    Both openbox and lxsession were installed. The only thing missing was the missing libsvg library. Here is the relevant entries in /var/log/pacman.log (when I installed the libsvg package just now)
    # egrep -ri svg /var/log/pacman.log
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman --color auto -S extra/librsvg'
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] installed librsvg (1:2.37.0-1)
    so somehow it wasn't needed on a working lxde since 08/28 when the system was installed, and right after 3.10.10 kernel upgrade(Sat., 8/31), it is required to have the windows manager working properly. 3.10.10 linux kernel change log from https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … og-3.10.10 did not return anything relevant.
    Anyway thanks for the input and I'm glad that the problem was solved quickly.

  • [SOLVED] xserver 1.5 and KDE 4 keymaps - strange behavior

    I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I have read every thread about this I can find, and the wiki page, and I can't find a solution.
    I use a standard US keyboard (it's a laptop), but with the Dvorak keymap.  Most things work fine, except for any Ctrl-Alt combinations.  For example, ctrl-alt-left is detected as D.   ctrl-alt-right is C,  ctrl-alt-up is A, and ctrl-alt-down is B.  These are my shortcuts for switching desktops, so I use them constantly.  The Windows key works perfectly, as do ctrl-shift sequences.
    There's no problem in the VTs, and in xev, all the keys are detected normally.  I've also discovered that I can temporarily fix the problem by going into system settings, unsetting a shortcut, than resetting it, but this only lasts for that one session.  The next time I start KDE, the problem returns.
    I have removed my input devices from xorg.conf after upgrading to xserver 1.5, and in KDE system settings I've set it to Evdev-managed keyboard, with the us map and dvorak variant.  My /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi is as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <!-- -*- SGML -*- -->
    <deviceinfo version="0.2">
    <device>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keymap">
    <append key="info.callouts.add" type="strlist">hal-setup-keymap</append>
    </match>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
    <merge key="input.xkb.rules" type="string">base</merge>
    <!-- If we're using Linux, we use evdev by default (falling back to
    keyboard otherwise). -->
    <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">keyboard</merge>
    <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name"
    string="Linux">
    <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">evdev</merge>
    </match>
    <merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">dvorak</merge>
    <!-- <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">pc105</merge> -->
    <!-- <merge key="input.xkb.options" type="string">altwin:super_win</merge> -->
    <!-- <merge key="input.xkb.variant" type="string">dvorak</merge> -->
    </match>
    </device>
    </deviceinfo>
    The 3 lines that I've commented out at the end have been on and off at various times - makes no difference.  I've also noticed that in Xorg.0.log, there are 4 keyboards detected and enabled by HAL, as you can see here:

    I don't know, however, whether it is a bug in KDE (I am using KDEmod 3.5.10) or in xkeyboard-config package which provides setxkbmap and its config files - in particular /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet which contains definitions for keyboard models.
    I don't think this is a bug in KDE, as this fixed a problem I was having with xmodmap on Openbox.
    If I used xmodmap to remap my Caps Lock key to Ctrl in my openbox startup scripts, odd things happen to my keymap (Super key stops working, left arrow key stops repeating, etc).  Running setxkbmap before xmodmap seems to fix everything.
    Thanks!

    solved follow the steps from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CU … er_sharing
    then go to localhost:631 and share the printer,
    next go to the w7 machine and browse in the navigator archLinuxMachineIP:631 and copy the URL for the printer in printers tabs,
    then add on w7 this url and select the driver.
    you have to add a address reservation in your router to the machine with the printer,

  • [SOLVED] Major weird issues with KDE/Qt apps and unicode

    Hi, I've tried to search for my problem, but nothing has showed up, so if this has already been answered, please forgive me.
    Anyway, I use KDE as my primary desktop environment with SKIM as my unicode input method. After installing SKIM and Japanese fonts back when I first set Arch up, I have never had any issues with inputting unicode or displaying it in any program, whether that be irssi running through Konsole, or the song titles in Amarok. That all changed this afternoon, somehow...
    The only major changes I can remember making to my system today are the following:
    1.) I installed Awesome Window Manager to check it out
    2.) I installed a pkgbuild of urxvt
    3.) I made an .Xdefaults file and added these lines to customize my urxvt
    After messing around with these things, I decided that Awesome wasn't a suitable WM for me, went back into KDE, and removed the package. I noticed a few strange issues after that though:
    1. Foreign characters refuse to display properly in any terminal emulator.
    2. Foreign characters come up as jumble in Konqueror now as well, when they never did before:
    3. SKIM refuses to let me input Japanese characters with Anthy in any KDE app. The option for Japanese just isn't there, even though I have it installed:
    4. Foreign characters display perfectly as tags for songs in Amarok, but if the music file itself has foreign characters in it, the title is garbled and the track is unplayable:
    5. SKIM works absolutely fine in non-KDE apps like Firefox:
    As seen in the last example, my Japanese fonts are all installed, and SKIM is working as it should in any non-KDE app, suggesting that there are no problems on that end. The issue seems to be with something in KDE, but I have no idea where to begin fixing it. Furthermore, I have no idea what could have caused this issue in the first place. I don't see how installing a window manager or terminal emulator package could have screwed up my fonts, and the .Xdefaults file I wrote just contained config information for urxvt. Nothing else. I even ended up deleting that, but it did not fix my problem.
    If you could be of any help, I'd really appreciate it. I have a lot of files with foreign characters in them, and being able to read them is essential.

    I was just looking into locales, actually.
    My current locale is:
    LANG=en_US.utf8
    LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8"
    LC_TIME="en_US.utf8"

    LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"
    LC_ALL=
    and locale -a brings up:
    C
    POSIX
    en_US.utf8
    Is there anything here that could be causing this issue?
    I'm curious how my locale got messed with in the first place if this is indeed the problem...

  • [SOLVED]Lose Conky window shadows...

    I have Xfce set to display shadows under windows, which looks great until I run Conky.  Any tips on how I can get rid of Conky's shadow and keep the rest?

    You most likely can solve this with the correct combination of the own_window and own_window_type parameters in your .conkyrc file. While I don't use XFCE I believe this problem is the same under most compositors. Try the following to solve the problem:
    own_window yes
    own_window_transparent yes
    own_window_type desktop
    If this doesn't work, you might try using "override" for the own_window_type.
    Good luck,

  • [SOLVED] Low quality windows after kernel upgrading

    Hello,
    I've got such a weird situation. After I upgraded to 3.12-2, my KDE windows got a low quality style. You can figure out better what I mean with this screenshot.
    I did try to reinstall the video driver (I'm using the integrated gpu currently), delete and recreate the KDE cache, and downgrade the kernel. But an even stranger thing is that although I downgraded the kernel, the system kept using the 3.12.2-2; I was able to use neither dhcpcd nor X too.
    I strongly think it's an hardware compatibility problem, don't you?

    It would have been better to post the exact commands you used and their result (what video driver? what KDE cache? what kernel? )
    I strongly think it's an hardware compatibility problem, don't you?
    How could that prevent you from downgrading the kernel?
    So you say that you downgraded the kernel, to 3.12.1-3 I presume, you rebooted and the machine still uses the 3.12.2-1 kernel!
    It's very strange : did the downgrading finished normally? Look into the pacman.log file and the kernel log messages in dmesg; and the xorg server log also, if possible with the new kernel and with the previous one. There is also the .xsession-errors file in $HOME.
    I know it's strange! I've never come across a similiar problem. And I'm gonna tell you more: it kept doing that even when the *.3-1 came out. I had to use the brute force. I manually removed the kernel images, the packages in the cache, and upgraded with --force, all that in live mode, and it worked fine.

    I received two solutions to this from a moderator on the kde forums:
    - specify that that particular window skips the taskbar by right clicking title bar of the toolbox window -> more actions -> special window settings -> arrangement and access -> ...
    - use Gimp 2.8 single window mode
