[SOLVED] Some systemd processes (e.g. systemd-journald) can't start.

After a fresh install on a new laptop (dual boot with Windows 8.1 vie rEFInd) I notice some error messages whilst booting. systemd-journald fails to start, and I also see some errors relating to the creation of the volatile filesystem. It's hard for me to give a lot detail about this as without journaling as I'm not sure how to get the error messages.
I did see this from dmesg:
[ 128.638674] systemd[1]: Starting Stop Read-Ahead Data Collection...
[ 128.662550] systemd[1]: Started Stop Read-Ahead Data Collection.
[ 194.545294] systemd[1]: Starting Journal Socket (/dev/log).
[ 194.545391] systemd[1]: Listening on Journal Socket (/dev/log).
[ 194.545471] systemd[1]: Starting Journal Socket.
[ 194.545540] systemd[1]: Listening on Journal Socket.
[ 194.545613] systemd[1]: Starting Journal Service...
[ 194.546604] systemd[1]: Started Journal Service.
[ 194.549797] systemd-journald[711]: Failed to get machine id: No such file or directory
[ 194.553931] systemd[1]: systemd-journald.service has no holdoff time, scheduling restart.
[ 194.554205] systemd[1]: Stopping Journal Service...
[ 24.362121] systemd-tmpfiles[330]: [/usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/systemd.conf:26] Failed to replace specifiers: /run/log/journal/%m
[ 24.364106] systemd-tmpfiles[330]: [/usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/systemd.conf:29] Failed to replace specifiers: /var/log/journal/%m
[ 24.404888] systemd[1]: systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
[ 24.409499] systemd[1]: Failed to start Create Volatile Files and Directories.
[ 24.412303] systemd[1]: Unit systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service entered failed state.
And if I check the status of journald through systemctl I get:
systemd-journald.service - Journal Service
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-journald.service; static)
Active: failed (Result: start-limit) since Wed 2014-08-27 10:37:50 UTC; 1h 2min ago
Docs: man:systemd-journald.service(8)
man:journald.conf(5)
Process: 720 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-journald (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
Main PID: 720 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
Status: "Shutting down..."
I've tried reinstalling systemd, and adding systemd to HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf, neither of these things seem to help. I also can't start the services manually.
If anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Normally, as Loqs said, 'systemd-firstboot --setup-machine-id' should have been run when you first installed the systemd package.
You can verify if the '/etc/machine-id' file exists:
$ ls -l /etc/machine-id
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 33 25 mars 2009 /etc/machine-id
If you don't find one, maybe use 'systemd-machine-id-setup' instead to create one.
But have you seen error messages during the Arch installation? Because that should not be necessary.
Edit: 'systemd-firstboot' is new in systemd 216, so should not be found in the live installation disk 2014.08.

    Hi  Joecui
    Please let us know did you changed the instance profile and did a restart or tries to upgrade the kernel.
    Any changes on the OS level or to the IP-ADD maybe.
    Would suggest restoring the profiles or  kernel if upgraded.

  • [solved]Trying to insert a blocking systemd unit into the boot process

    What i'm trying to do is to start (and *wait* for it to complete) a unit before starting another.
    In particular, i need to create and mount a partition on the fly before any filesystem gets mounted.
    My unit file is:
    # cat /etc/systemd/system/early-boot-koko.service
    [Unit]
    Description=Configurazione ottimale per il boot da rete
    [Service]
    Before=systemd-remount-fs.service
    #Nice=19
    #IOSchedulingClass=3
    #IOSchedulingPriority=7
    Type=oneshot # is forking instead of oneshot needed here?
    ExecStart=/root/scripts/early-boot.sh
    TimeoutSec=0
    #StandardInput=tty
    RemainAfterExit=yes
    I created even created an override to systemd-remount-fs.service and added early-boot-koko.service to the "After" array:
    ]# cat /etc/systemd/system/systemd-remount-fs.service
    # This file is part of systemd.
    # systemd is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it
    # under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License as published by
    # the Free Software Foundation; either version 2.1 of the License, or
    # (at your option) any later version.
    [Unit]
    Description=Remount Root and Kernel File Systems
    Documentation=man:systemd-remount-fs.service(8)
    Documentation=http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/APIFileSystems
    DefaultDependencies=no
    Conflicts=shutdown.target
    After=systemd-readahead-collect.service systemd-readahead-replay.service systemd-fsck-root.service early-boot-koko.service
    Before=local-fs-pre.target local-fs.target shutdown.target
    Wants=local-fs-pre.target
    ConditionPathExists=/etc/fstab
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    RemainAfterExit=yes
    ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-remount-fs
    But when i boot, i notice that early-boot-koko.service is still running while systemd-remount-fs has exited :
    # systemctl |grep 'early\|remount'
    early-boot-koko.service loaded active running Configurazione ottimale per il boot da rete
    systemd-remount-fs.service loaded active exited Remount Root and Kernel File Systems
    ...but i need  early-boot-koko.service to complete before systemd-remount-fs is started.
    What am i doing wrong?
    Thanks.

  • [Solved] Starting systemd --user as a systemd --system process?

    Hey guys,
    I would like to run systemd --user as a system service using this .service file I wrote:
    $ cat [email protected]
    [Unit]
    Description=Systemd --user instance for %I
    Documentation=man:systemd
    [Service]
    User=%I
    ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd --user --log-level=debug
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    I enabled it for my user using `systemctl enable systemd-user@evan`, however, when starting it it fails with the following errors:
    Jul 21 21:14:42 desktop systemd[12920]: systemd 204 running in user mode. (+PAM -LIBWRAP -AUDIT -SELINUX -IMA -SYSVINIT +LIBCRYPTSETUP +GCRYPT +ACL +XZ)

    Jul 21 21:14:42 desktop systemd[12920]: Failed to allocate manager object: Permission denied
    Is it possible to run systemd --user like this? Do I need to add something to my [email protected]?

    EDIT: I just realized that the systemd-user-session-units package will only include specific units at build-time weather I have have the programs or not. You're right, I should just use this package!
    Well, to be honest, maybe I'm trying to hack around a problem that doesn't even really exist, but I don't think the systemd-user-sessions-units package meets my needs.
    The way I would like to have my user sessions setup is something like this:
    I would like to have an instance of systemd --user always running under my user so I can keep things like transmission-daemon always running, even when I don't have a user session open. When I do start my user session (via logging into getty) I want to bring my systemd instance up to a certain target. For example, logging in via tty1 should bring up graphical.target, which will start X11 and all that, while logging into any other tty will start console.target (for stuff like ssh-agent etc).
    Thinking more about this I suppose there's really no reason I couldn't use the [email protected] from systemd-user-session-units, but since I won't use most of the other user units included, I would rather just not use it.
    Here's what my .profile looks like:
    if systemctl -q is-active systemd-user@evan
    then
    # Default systemd to the console target
    target="console"
    # If we're logging in from VT1 start the graphical target
    if [[ $XDG_VTNR == 1 ]] && ! systemctl --user -q is-active graphical.target &> /dev/null
    then
    export DISPLAY=:0
    target="graphical"
    fi
    # Set all environment variables in the systemd --user instance (still working on this)
    env | systemctl --user set-environment -
    # Bring up systemd --user to the specified target
    systemctl --user start ${target}.target
    fi
    source "$HOME/.bashrc"

  • [SOLVED] Run kded as a separate (systemd?) service

    Hi.
    I'm currently trying to enrich wmii session with some kde features.
    For example to allow kde to manage my keyboard I can do
    $ kded4
    $ qdbus org.kde.kded /kded loadModule keyboard
    The issue is that I can't start kded on login. I've tried both .xinitrc and systemd way. The outcome is always the same: kded4 won't work for the first time. There are 4 processes of kded4 and none of them responds to dbus calls. However, killing out all of its processes and starting again results in kded4 behaving correctly.
    So, here what I have currently
    systemd service

    [Service]
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/kded4
    [Install]

  • [SOLVED] Problems with systemd-update-utmp after systemd update

    Hi all,
    I noticed that systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service has been failing since the last systemd update. My systemd is:
    Repository : core
    Name : systemd
    Version : 184-2
    $ systemctl status systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service
    systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service - Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service; static)
    Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Sat, 02 Jun 2012 13:55:40 +0200; 56min ago
    Docs: man:utmp(5)
    Main PID: 395 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service
    The exact cause of error is:
    Jun 02 13:55:40 arch systemd-update-utmp[395]: Failed to write utmp record: No such file or directory
    Jun 02 13:55:40 arch systemd[1]: systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1
    What's more, after this update I am not able to mount vmware hgfs shares. I've got following entry in my /etc/fstab (from arch's wiki)
    #enable shared folders
    .host:/ /mnt/hgfs vmhgfs defaults,ttl=5 0 0
    It worked just fine. After the update system boots into maintenance mode with the following message found in sysemd-journal:
    arch mount[143]: Directory in share name must not be empty
    arch mount[143]: Error: share name is invalid, aborting mount
    After commenting hgfs mount entry out the system boots normally.
    Thanks in advance.
    EDIT:
    Mounting hgfs shares manually works as expected
    $: sudo mount /mnt/hgfs
    Could not add entry to mtab, continuing
    mtab:
    .host:/ /mnt/hgfs vmhgfs rw,relatime 0 0
    so this issue must be systemd related

    Yep, libmount is probably not a problem, I guess this error comes from vmware's hgfsmounter

    I am just wondering why it worked before (and why manual mount works). Is there anything in systemd mount layer that consumes '/'?

    Question #2: I'm using grub2 via bios MBR; yesterday when I installed the new system using the latest archlinux install iso, I generated the grub2 conf using the "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" technique... which build a crazy looking conf that looks more like a shell script than anything.  ( I'm used to editing the old grub1 config manually, and it made sense to me ).  So where the heck am I supposed to put this 'init=/bin/systemd' pragma?
    Assistance and advice much appreciated!

    Hi,
    according to the mailing list they just merged libsystemd and systemd-tools to the systemd package. Since the initscripts are still present, you can leave it alone and it will boot as usual. The message is more like a friendly 'C'mon, we'll going to switch to systemd anytime soon, so just give it a try.'.
    I haven't used grub2 for a while, but there should be a file called /etc/default/grub where you can add GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="init=/bin/systemd". Then regenerate the configuration via grub-mkconfig and you are good to go.
    Edit: Too late
    Thanks for your time in responding though anyhow - much appreciated!   (c8=

    Updating system with pacman didn't solve it.
    Did I miss something out while migrating to systemd, is it a problem with SLiM or user session maybe ? Do you guys have any ideas where to start ? Thanks.

  • J2EE:some java processes running

    HI!
    I have a general question regarding the SAP Solution Manager.
    We have succesfully installed SAP SOLMAN 4.0 (Windows, Oracle).
    Unfortunately when I start SAP system with MMC-Console, I see that the Java-instance is yellow.
    (disp+work.exe --> tells, J2EE:some java processes running).
    I cann log on to the system, but it scares me a lot (in Tr. SICK are no errors).
    <b>Can some one tell, wheter it is critical and how can I solve this problem?</b>
    Thank you!
    regards

    it seems, that your j2ee engine is not coming up correctly.

  • Firefox froze up. So I removed from computer and reloaded. If I close Firefox, can't restart by clicking on the icon. Have to end process in Task Manager. It then starts. Some links on some web pages won't work.

    Hi,
    As I say in the question I don't know what happened but Firefox just stopped operating and then became erratic. So I removed the firefox programme from my computer and reloaded Firefox.
    It now runs normally but I can't run Firefox on two tabs, only one, and if I close it down during a session I can't reopen it using the desk top icon. I go to task manager, processes, and end process for Firefox - then I can start it using the icon on the desktop.
    I have also noticed that some links on a web page won't work - javascript is involved.
    Thanks for your herlp,
    Mike FD

    It sounds like you are getting in a hurry.
    If you force Firefox to close in a hurry, then it won't normally start until you re-start the computer. There are ways around this, but I'm not going to go into them right now.
    None-force way to close Firefox down: Close the program and wait. Do something else. Firefox appears as if it is closed, but it's not. Firefox cleans out cookies and it's cache after you close it. That takes a few minutes. You can't restart it while it's doing house cleaning.
    After it is done, then you can restart Firefox normally. You can watch it in the Task Manager.
    The same applies if you are installing javascript. You have to wait a few minutes.
    As for running it with multiple tabs, I usually have 5 or 6, or more, tabs open at a time. Have no idea what the problem is there. Firefox needs special permission by use of a pop-up option to close with multiple tabs open.

    Greetings from a Photoshop Newbie. I need a computer, preferably a Mac laptop, with some serious processing power. I take photos with a Pentax 645Z; files are 50MB raw. I upload from Adobe Bridge and manipulate the photo, sometimes turning them into files in excess of 250MB. I cannot resize as the large files are needed for enlargements. Have all sorts of problems trying to manipulate, add effects and saving most large files. I need some serious processing power. Can anyone suggest what Mac i should purchase? I thank you in advance for your help :-)

    It sounds as if you're having some system-related problems now, unrelated to processing power as such. In particular, a buggy video driver can cause everything to slow to a crawl.
    Medium format files are big, true, but not so big as to cause significant slowdowns on a normally functioning and reasonably current computer. A laptop will always be slower than a well-equipped desktop system, though. Mac vs PC plays no part in this, performance is unrelated to platform.
    Bottlenecks are different in ACR and Photoshop, so that should give you a clue. ACR is computing-intensive and mostly limited by CPU speed. Photoshop, however, is mostly bandwidth-intensive and mainly limited by memory and disk throughput. It's also sensitive to GPU issues.

  • I have solved some questions, please check if my answers are correct

    Hi every Java aces,
    I have solved some programming questions, please check if my answers are correct. Thanks
    Here are the questions and the answers to each question
    (a) Write a method called add that takes three integers as parameters and returns an
    integer that is the sum of the three parameters.
    (b) Write a method called max that takes three integers as parameters and returns the
    largest of the three integers.
    (c) Write a method called printMax that takes three integers as parameters and prints
    the maximum value to the screen. The method should return nothing. The method
    should print the words \The maximum value is " followed by the maximum value,
    followed by a new-line character. You should try to use the max method that you
    wrote earlier.
    (d) Write a method called min that takes three integers as parameters and returns the
    smallest of the three integers.
    (f) Write a method called ticketPrice that takes one integer parameter representing
    the age of a person, and returns the price of a movie ticket in dollars (as a
    oating
    point value). Children under 6 get in for free (0.00), people that are 18 or under
    pay 8.50, senior citizens (65 or older) pay 6.50, and all other people pay 10.00.
    (g) Write a method called isDivisor that takes two integers as parameters and returns
    true if the rst parameter is a divisor of the second parameter or false otherwise.
    We say that m is a divisor of n, or that m divides n, if there is an integer k such
    that n = k m. Note that 1 divides every integer, and every integer divides i
    itself .

  • Client wants some business process to avoid the material theft?

    Hi all,
    Client wants us to recommend some business process to avoid the material theft in their storage area. kindly suggest me some solution like gate entry or periodic physical inventory or weigh bridge connection with SAP while loading and unloading the material with reasons.
    regards,
    Sanjana

    hi
    for this you have to create Z program ,like for gate entry or weigh bridge
    you should do the audit bills manually and physical inventory in sap
    check out on net for GATE ENTRY or PHY INV
