[SOLVED (somehow)] No sound, nothing will even play

I just started having issues with my sound and I cannot figure out what is going on. What I did before I got this issue and steps I've taken to try to resolve:
1) Was playing video in frambuffer (working sound), had to set permissions on /dev/fb0 to 666 to get video to work
2) Wanted to ensure no sound would come for a moment, muted using "amixer set Master toggle"
3) Tried to play music, no sound
4) Unmuted everything, uninstalled and stopped PulseAudio to ensure I'd have pure audio
5) Rebooted
6) Triple checked, made sure nothing was muted
This problem seems most likely to be more than ALSA, as when I attempt to play Youtube videos or anything from Plex the media is stuck at 0:00. I looked at the loaded kernel modules, nothing seems out of the ordinary. I tried my speakers on another device, the speakers work fine. I'm using an HP Laptop, a little old (from 2011). How should I go about diagnosing and resolving my problem? Thanks!

I've read through the wiki, haven't seen any tests for no volume. Which tests specifically would you like me to run?
EDIT: Odd, now sound is working fine except for with Chrome

Let's try a repair install of iTunes first.
Restart the PC. If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair". If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", click "Change" and then click "Repair".
Can you launch your iTunes now?

After being open for a while (with several tabs) Firefox becomes generally unresponsive and stops playing sound - videos will still play, but no sound.

This problem has only begun happening recently. I commonly keep my Firefox open overnight with websites like rainymood.com or grooveshark.com playing, as well as several other tabs including but not limited to Facebook, Reddit, and YouTube. Sometimes, after several hours/days of not restarting Firefox or my computer, Firefox begins to become unresponsive - that is to say, pages take a long time to load, opening new tabs is difficult for the browser, and videos will take up to 30 seconds to begin playing. In addition to this, sound will stop playing; if I begin a YouTube video, after the initial period of excessive loading, the video will play, but without any audio. Also, websites such as rainymood.com and grooveshark, even Facebook, will stop making sound.
Note that this is different from a flash plugin crash - when flash crashes, both audio and video become inaccessible and a simple refresh or restart of Firefox will solve the problem. But what is happening here is different; if I refresh the tab, nothing changes, and even if I restart Firefox, it opens again the same way until I restart my computer completely.
Also of note: I have had, in the past, this same thing happen but rainymood.com continued playing, however no other tabs would make sound. The problem is sporadic and I'm not sure where to begin. Also, sometimes this is only a Firefox-specific problem, meaning other programs on my computer can make sounds, but sometimes this problem makes my entire computer stop making sounds, except for Ventrilo, which works but is also unresponsive at first.

You can also try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

My iphone plays sound but will not play ringtones and alerts

My iphone plays sound but not ringtones or alerts. It will not even 'click', but the speaker phone and both internal and external audio work fine. How do i fix this?

On my iphone 5, there is a mute button/ lever on the left hand side of the phone that you might want to check. ("Left" when phone is oriented such that you are looking at the screen, such that the power button is "up" on the right hand side and the menu/ Siri button is facing front).
The mute button/ lever is the first button on the upper left hand side of the phone; you may need to move your phone's protector to see & access it. You'll know the mute button has been activated when a red line is visible. It becomes visible when the mute button/lever is pushed down, (towards the back of the phone). Flip the button/ level forward, so that it is pointing towards the top of your screen, and your ringers and alerts will once again ring.
I discovered that when this button/ lever was activated and my ringers & alerts were muted, my alarm clock ringer was still audible, which I think is a pretty nifty fail-safe on this feature. You can see the original Q&A suggestion by clicking link below.

HELP - No sound and will not play any music or videos

Hi All,
I'm really hoping someone can help me. I have an Apple iPod 2g 16gb.
I am having real problems with the sound not working when I upgrade the firmware. If I update to the new 4.1, the internal speaker stops working completely and that's not all...
If I try to play a song, it basically loads the PLAYING screen (with the two arrows and PLAY button in the middle at the bottom) then appears to immediately stop the song and go back to the track list screen.
Also... whenever I try playing any videos on the youtube app, it keeps saying video cannot be played...
Now, if I downgrade to Firmware version 2.1.1 sounds works, videos work and music plays!
I have tried all the Restore option and Reset all settings solution and nothing seems to work. I have been researching like mad on the Internet and have found a couple of posts with similar problesm so I know it isn't just me but does anyone have any ideas at all because, had I any, I'd have ripped all my hair out by now!!!

If it works fine with the older FW, I would leave it alone. iOS 4.1 has its share of problems. Battery life is one big issue.

Recently - Nothing will stay playing without downloading it first

This problem just started in the last few days. When I try to play any song that I have not intentionally downloaded manually (pushed the download arrow next to) on my iPhone, it will play for a moment, then pause itself. If I press the play button, it does the same thing. It is like it is buffering and hitting the end of the buffer, which I understand to a certain extent, but since Apple says songs are not streaming, it shouldn't be doing this.
Most frustrating, this wasn't happening until recently. Anyone else have this issue?

You shouldn't need both Acrobat and Reader. That aside, I suggest trying to open Acrobat and using Help>Repair. Also check the plugins or addons for your browser.

Stereo will not play sound anymore with Apple TV

My Apple TV was working fine and is hooked up to my receiver for sound. Now I have to shut off the receiver to get sound it will only play sound through the TV. I know that updated the Apple TV was updated for air play speakers but mine is wired.

I've been having this problem since the new Apple Tv update. I wish Apple would address the issue but I've found out the new update changed my audio settings within the AppleTV. Go to settings>>Audio & Video>> then scroll down to the Dolby Digital setting and if it says ON (on,Auto,off) then switch it to Auto.. and presto you have audio again.. Found this out myself when I was about to rewatch the League season 1.. For some reason I orginaly had it set to auto but the new update changed it to On. Really getting sick and tired of Apple lately.

Rhythmbox error: will only play music as root [SOLVED]

Hello, Rhythmbox refuses to play anything as a normal user, but runs completely fine under root. I am indeed under the audio group, as far as I know I *should* have the right permissions. It'll load correctly (seemingly), but when I go to press Play, the button "presses down," but nothing will ever play; the cursor won't move. Everything is updated, all codecs are installed... I really don't know what to do with it at this point. I figure it's permission-related given that it works under root, but really, I don't know. I would really appreciate some help.

Yeah, there is a GTK+ error:
EDIT: the GTK+ error repeats numerous times, and doesn't appear when trying to play a song.
EDIT EDIT: this is without the debug option.

Try a Reset:
From the Home screen double tap the Home button to view the multitasking bar at the bottom. Tap and hold an app at the bottom till the icons wiggle with the minus button visible. Tap the button to close all apps then tap the Home button to get back to the Home page. Press and hold the Sleep button till you see the Slide to power off message and power it off. Once powered down completely press and hold the sleep button till the Apple icon appears.

Sound effects no longer play in Rosetta emulation games

While sorting out the data transferred from my recently deceased Powerbook G4 17", I accidently started up Audacity 1.2.3 which is a Power PC only version. It only partially loaded with its icon in the Dock but nothing else. I had to force quit the program to get rid of it and then deleted it. When my teenage son went to play his suite of PPC games such as Age of Empires 2 and StarWars after that, the game sound effects no longer worked. The background music still plays, but all the player responsive sound effects will not play, even though the settings to play them are correct.
I am wondering if the opening up and crashing of the Power PC Audacity may have stuffed up something in the Rosetta emulation system software relating to the sound output of emulated games. Before I consider doing a full backup and reinstall, does anyone who is a regular gamer playing PPC games on a Macbook Pro have any ideas on how to fix this problem. I was wondering if the Rosetta component of OSX can be replaced from a working system or if it is totally integrated into the Mac OS unlike Classic was.

Clean iPhone charging port with clean dry toothbrush. See if fixed. If not, and if there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, clean again, very well with toothbrush and small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
There will be no audio output in safe mode. The question to be answered by the test is whether any devices are listed in the Sound preference pane. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I've upgraded to OS 10.8.2 and my Bowers and Wilkins MM-1 Speakers were working fine until today, and now they won't play any sound at all, even though iTunes shows the audio is playing. I've tried both the headphone jack and the USB port. Please help!

Thanks. I haven't mixed down the audio or checked the number of tracks in Prefs. Good points.
As far as a mixdown goes, I'll definitely give it a try, though I wonder whether or not the tracks will be recognized during mix down recording - given that you can't hear either of those segments in playback. Just have to try.
Re the preferred number of allowed tracks - I'll go check as soon as I send this off, but I'm not sure that applies in this case, since the two Channels containing the segments that are pinked out are not in additional tracks. I should have mentioned that other audio clips and segments on the same Channels in the SAME tracks ARE heard in playback. As are two additional track in the 2nd Sequence. It's only when the two sequences are joined that the pink tinted segments can't be heard. Within the sequence the same audio cuts playback as they should. Thanks again &

I downloaded the most recent update to Itunes yesterday and now I can't play any music. It just sits still. The play button is pushed but nothing will play. Any help?

So frustrating!!! Nothing will play since the update. I've also tried to import CD's and I can't tell if that even worked.

Ive updated my iphone 4 to ios5 and the music will not play atall even though its all on the phone is anyone else having this problem?

Obviously Ive had the same errors originally but the software has updated fine now. But for some reason the music on the phone will not play atall! with or with out headphones. It seems too just be staying at 0.00mins and even if I fast forward it it just stays at the particular mins fast forwarded to. Has anyone else had this problem?

Similar symptom here. I gathered from other threads that by removing all the songs and re-sync them back to iPhone4 would sort the problem! I tried with one album and it seemed to have work fine! So I removed all the songs and transferred them back again! However, I could not launch Music app any more! Click on Music and it just stopped, i.e. could not be launched!!!
However, I noticed that I could still play all the songs through headphone control. But if you play without the headphone plugged in, no sound comes out of the phone speaker!!!!!
