[solved] Sony .ARW files and Linux

I took a ton of pictures today on a Sony Alpha 100 SLR camera in it's own "raw" format called ARW.  Surprisingly, the GIMP can't read them!  What do I need to do to be able to read this file format in Linux?  It's really important that I get this taken care of because I spent several hours taking hi-res pictures that we'll eventually use to wrap the truck for our business!

gimp-ufraw was exactly what I needed!  I got the pictures finished and we're going to be working on designing the truck in about a half hour.
It might be a month or so perhaps, but I'll post a pic of the truck when it's wrapped

problems with .ARW files and auto toning
let me try to explain this because this has happened in past and never found a way to resolve but i lived with it
now that I have a Sony A7R the problem is more serious
Firstly i take pride it making the picture happen all in camera, i use DRO lvl 5 to get enough light, like when i'm shooting at dusk. DRO its like doing HDR but in a single file, it lightens the darks. in my camera i'm happy with results
but when I upload them to lightroom, they come out near black.
    allow me to explain
lets say I import 100 images
i double check my preferences and everything is UNCHECKED when it comes to importing options, there is no auto toning, nothing.
as the images import i see a preview in the thumbnail which looks fine.
i double click on one to enlarge it, hence leave grid view.
for a brief 1 or 2 seconds, i see the full image in all its glory but than lightroom does something funny, it darkens the image
one by one as it inspects each image, if it was a DRO image it makes it too dark.
to make this clear, the image is perfect as it was in the beginning but after a few seconds lightroom for some reason thinks it needs to correct it.
how to prevent lightroom from doing this, i want the image exactly as it is, why must lightroom apply a correction>?
i think it has to do something with interpreting the raw file and lightroom applies its own algorithm.
but here is what i dont get.....before lightroom makes the change i'm able to witness the picture exactly as it was taken and want it unchanged..
now i have to tweak each file or find a profile for it which is added work.
any ideas how to prevent lightroom from ruining my images and just leave them as they were when first detected...
there are 2 phases...one is when it originally imports and they look fine
second is scanning each image and applying some kind of toning which darkens it too much.
    thanks for the help

sorry thats the auto reply message from yahoo email.
    i've disabled it now
thing is, there is no DRO jpg to download from the camera
its only ARW. so my understanding is when i use DRO setting, the camera makes changes to the ARW than lightroom somehow reads this from the ARW.
but then sadly reverts it to no DRO settings.
because i notice if i take normal picture in raw mode its dark but if i apply dro to it, it comes out brighter, yet when i d/l the image from camera to lightroom, which is an ARW - there are no jpgs. lightroom decides to mess it up
so in reality there is no point in using DRO because when i upload it lightroom removes it.
is there a way to tell lightroom to preserve the jpg preview as it first sees it.
its just lame, picture appears perfect...than lightroom does something, than bam, its ruined,.
what do i need to do to prevent lightroom from ruining the image? if it was good in the first place.

  • Sony ARW files in Camera RAW 6.2 for PSE 8

Recently I bought a new camera, a Sony A580. I made several tests in RAW (ARW-files) and found out that my PSE8 does not recognize the files and hence, does not import them into the organizer.
I started searching and installed the Adobe Camera RAW 6.2 update, and installed a Sony update for viewing ARW files in Windows Vista/7.
Now I can view the ARW files in Windows, but still cannot import them into the organizer.
Is there anybody out there who can help me importing my ARW files into the PSE8 organizer?
    Thank you in advance,
    With kind regards,

    Well, very clear answer.
Can you tell me where I can find information about models which are supported by Camera RAW 6.2? I've been searching everywhere but only been able to find supported camera models for Camera RAW 6.3.
Thanks a lot for your swift answer and the supplied links.

  • How can I view Sony ARW files in Bridge CS4?

    Hello
I have a Sony A390, which takes ARW files (I guess Sony's version of a RAW file?), which annoyingly do not show up in Bridge CS4. Would really like to know if there is a way round this please? I have tried updating through Bridge, but it claims there are currently no updates?
    Thank you!

You can not open those files from CS4 directly.
That camera was first supported by ACR 6.2, which requires CS5 to run.
Look for, download, install and then run the free, stand-alone DNG Converter 8.5 to convert your raw Sony files into raw DNGs that you can later open in CS4.

  • Sony .ARW files in Elements 10

    Hello,
I have Photoshop Elements 10 installed on my Macbook Pro and have been unable to edit my .ARW files from my Sony A77II as it informs me that it does not recognise this type of file. PSE has the ACR 6.5 Plug-In running, but I was unable to update this to ACR 8.6, which is the version that recognises my camera. Is there any way that I can update PSE10 so that I will be able to edit my files? If not, does anyone have any solutions as to what I should do?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hi,
If you don't want to update to PSE 13, you could download/install the free Adobe DNG converter 8.6. Use the converter to convert the ARW files to DNG files which can then be used by PSE 10.

  • Lightroom will not read sony ARW files

I understood the latest version of Lightroom supported the recent Sony A7 series, whose RAW files are Sony's own ARW files. I have the latest Lightroom but it will not read these files.

Here is a list of the Sony A7 series cameras that Lightroom supports, and the version of Lightroom required. The Lightroom versions are in the highlighted area.
If you are certain you have the appropriate version of Lightroom installed, then provide more information. Can your operating system browser see the raw files? Have they been downloaded to your hard drive? What operating system are you using? What is the exact version of Lightroom?

  • LR 4.4, camera raw version 7.4 will not display Sony .ARW files

I have LR 4.4 on my Mac, camera raw 7.4 version.  It can not display sony's ARW files (raw) from my Sony alpha 6000.  Any solutions?L

Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 8.8
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Adobe DNG Converter 8.8
It's Lightroom 5.4, but Camera Raw 8.4 that's needed for the camera. You probably know this, but just to clarify, Lightroom does not use the Camera Raw plug-in. So it will require that you use a more current version of Lightroom or the DNG converter. At this point in time it's probably smarter to use the DNG converter if you want Lightroom 6 when it is released. It is anticipated that it will be relatively soon. But who knows what that means? It could be days, or weeks, or months. So I would suggest converting to DNG in the meantime until Lightroom 6 finally surfaces.

  • Plug-in for sony arw files

I have just installed elements 12 on my mac.does it recognise arw files from my sony nex-7 camera.if not is there a plug-in for elements12.

I don't understand that. The NEX-7 isn't a new camera, and the camera raw plug-in that came with PSE 12 should open those files with no problem. If you go to Help>system info in the editor, what does it show for the camera raw plugin?
EDIT If you double click a file from your camera, PSE should automatically open it in the raw converter. Is this not happening?

  • How to recover sony ARW files deleted by Aperture after importing?

I imported some Sony RAW photos (in .ARW format, shot by Sony Nex 6) from a SDXC card into Aperture library with my MacBook Pro, and as usual I let Aperture deleted the files on the SDXC card (i.e. I did not deleted the files using Finder).  Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the imported ARW files (as masters in the Aperture library) by Carbon Capy Cloner (I made a copy in the wrong direction after editing the photos).  Now I am trying to recover those ARW files.  I used several Photo recovery software but they do not recognize any deleted ARW files on the SD card (nor on my hard drive). The best result was from Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery software, which recognizes those deleted ARW files as NEF files but the size of each photo is only 32KB (it shows the photo in its preview).  I recovered them, but no software can open those 32KB NEF files.  It appears to me that Aperture somehow deleted the ARW files on the SD card in a way (very different from Finder deletion) that photo recovery software can't recognize them.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Yes I understand that trying to recover from my HD is more difficult, so my attention is on the card now.  In fact, I tried to use Stellar to recover from the HD as well and I got tons of other photos and non of them is ARW.
I have kept both the HD and the card not being used anymore (I stopped using it right after I made the copy in the wrong direction, and the card is not being used after Aperture deleted the photos), so the data should be there.  I tested with Stellar on a new card.  I shot some ARW photos and format the card on my NEX 6 camera, then try to recover them with Stellar.  Same result: no ARW files, only NEF files of size 32KB or less (the photos in the preview are correct).  Strange.  I tried Remo software, no ARW either, not even NEF files.  I guess I am using the wrong recovery software (although they advertise that they recover ARW files).  Is there any recovery software that DOES recover ARW photos shot by Sony NEX 6?

  • Anyone else having any luck with Sony raw files and the Raw 3.8 Compatibility fix?

Tried importing my raw photos from my Sony Nex-5N. Supposed to work with the Nex-C3 which should be the same. Have to use Lightroom instead of Aperture - would prefer Aperture.

I'm not sure as you have some extra letters on the cameras you cite, but Aperture 3 should support the Sony Alpha NEX-5, not sure about the 5N.
When you do import, what happens? When you plug in your camera (how are you importing) and hit the import button, what happens next?
More information the better for us to try and help troubleshoot the issue.

  • I have recently got an iPad 2, I can no longer view/edit my Sony .ARW files in iPhoto, why?

I suspect that the problem is associated with iPad 2 and my sychronisation of iPhoto events to that device.
I can no longer a single photo such that I can edit it, what is going wrong here?
Actually I have closed down iPhoto and reopened, strange, I can now access and edit the photos!
Ther is a problem but I am damned if I know what is causing it.  Nowt in console as far as I can see.

Looks like you no longer have a problem.

  • Mountain Lion doesn't display Finder preview icons for .ARW files? (RAW pictures taken with SONY cameras)

This is something that I find rather ridiculous, and have a hard time believing no-one at Apple has addressed yet.
Basically the problem is that neither Mountain Lion nor Lion show Finder thumbnail preview images for pictures that are taken with SONY digital cameras.
This is something that Snow Leopard, as well as multiple earlier iterations of OS X used to do without any problem. The professional photographer community who uses SONY professional DSLR cameras is up in arms about this. And we've all been crossing our fingers that perhaps the Mac OS X 10.7.1, 10.7.2, 10.7.3, 10.7.4, or possibly the 10.8 update would fix this issue for us.
Several of us have filed bug reports over the past year or two. See this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213982?tstart=0
This is a flaw in Apple's operating system. Especially considering that there are supposedly 200+ "new features" which were just released in Mountain Lion.
Those of us who work with SONY cameras every day would probably have paid the $19.99 upgrade price for just one "feature". And not even a new one. An old one. The ability to see our pictures in the Finder. Pretty basic stuff.
Hopefully someone fixes this for us with the release of Mac OS X 10.8.1
    Please. And thank you.

I can see image icons for all my pre-MtLion images.  These are the folder images (Icons), and all the photo images (icons) on all my hard drives.  IE If I have a folder of 300 wedding pictures, they all show the picture image above the file name in the icon view.  So if I want to open a picture of the "Flower Girl" I can see the image (icon) of the Flower Girl.  Without the image showing all I see is the filename...  Smith-212.tif.  Now with Mt. Lion I CAN'T see any IMAGES (ICONS) on any of the 300 photos.  Just the file names in all the different views.... Icon View, List VIew, etc.  If I have a Folder with 23 more folders inside, they don't even show up either.  I saw a step by step process of selecting the file and right clicking on it and opening it in Preview, then doing a copy and then pasting it on the original image in tghe get info window.  WHAT A PURE PAIN TO HAVE TO DO THIS TO 170,375 IMAGES.
The other issue I have is that 93.5 % of the remaining icons that do exist on my system is that those 93.5 % are so pixelated they appear as a hugh checkerboard viewed through two inch thick glasses..... not for drinking, but the kinda glasses used by a blind man.  IE the remaining icons are so PIXELATED it is almost impossible to tell what they  are.
BEN WELLAND...... What did you do to get this point?
Thank you, thank you, thank you, to whomever at Apple finally fixed this.
After updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2, SONY .ARW files (and I'm assuming Pentax .PEF files too) now render proper thumbnail icons in the Finder in list view, icon view, coverflow view, and columns view.
Since this is now a recognized bug, I'm guessing that the free update to Lion (10.7.5) that Apple also just released yesterday (September 19th, 2012) will probably fix this issue too.
    Hooray!
I have OS 10.8.2  and nothing has changed as far as being able to see photos / folders as image icons...
    rendered  proper thumbnail icons.
I have thousands of photo files that show nothing other that the file names.
The only way I can even see the file is to open it in Photoshop, or open the folder in Bridge. Even then after I open it in PS CS6, and save it again. It still is a "Empty" file...... no render proper thumbnail.
    icons
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Opening arw files from Sony SLT a33 in PSE 9

    Hi All,
I'm trying to edit photos from my newly purchased Sony SLT a33 but Camera Raw kept coming up with "wrong file type" error messages.  When I tried to open up arw files from my Sony a350 it works fine.
The only way so far for me to edit my Sony raw file from the SLT a33 is to open it up using the free Sony software, save it as jpeg/Tiff and then exporting it to PSE.  I would like to do it all using the PSE.
I've searched for updates but there seem to only be a 'patch' for Lightroom and CS.
Any light on this subject would be very helpful indeed.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    catraz84

Thank you very much for your help so far.
I've downloaded the patch as linked by Casey, extracted and ran it.  It showed a bar while updating it with camera Makers etc and it ran smoothly.  I then followed up with 99jon suggestiong and it is still showing up as Camera Raw 6.1.
I tried opening the newer Arw file and it's still coming up with the "wrong file type" error.  Opening older Arw file pops up in Camera Raw 6.1.
Any further suggestions regarding this issue?  :'(
    Kind regards

  • HD Sony Camcorder ACVHD file and Win CS5.5 question

I am thinking of upgrading to an HD Camcorder.  I am looking at models from Sony, Canon and Panasonic. One of the models I am looking at is the Sony HDR CV700V.  My questions: #1 Can Premiere Pro 5.5 handle Sony ACVHD files and specifically 1080P/60P files?  I have heard that 1080P/60P is nonstandard ACVHD.  Sony's website says that Sony AVCHD files cannot be imported into computers.  I have searched everywhere and I cannot find the answer.  There is no point in buying this camcorder if I cannot import ACVHD files into CS5.5.  #2 If there are file limitations specific to Sony's 1080p ACVHD is there another camcorder that does not have this problem such as Canon Vixia HG G10 or Panasonic HDC-TM 900. #3 Of the 3 manufacturers, Sony, Canon and Panasonic, does anyone have a recommendation as to which HD Camcorder ACVHD files work best with Win CS5.5?

I use PPro on a Mac instead of Windows, but the computing platform is irrelevant for your question.  I'm with Harm: Sony's statement is pure bunk.  I have 2 Sony Handycams that cut to AVCHD, and all I do is remove the SD card from the camera, then pop it into a card reader on my Mac.  Then I copy the entire filesystem over, and voila: I can edit it in PPro.
If the camera you're looking at doesn't cut to SD but instead to its own internal drive, then you'll need to connect the camera itself to the computer via USB.  It should appear to your computer as a removable drive, allowing you to copy the files over.
