[solved...sortof]kernel upgrade breaks system

Hi, I am unable to log in to arch in any way after doing a system upgrade.
The kernel was upgraded along with a couple of other things and I now cant start X, nor get to a tty.
My target was graphical at first, then I used an install disc to disable graphical and enable multi-user.target.
multi-user.target presents me with a blank black screen
graphical.target presents me with a blank blue screen (the blue from LXDM) which flashes some boots.
Im using the xf86-video-ati driver, Will try and downgrade kernel now.

  • [solved] after kernel upgrade screen flickering in gdm

    Hi,
    after the recent kernel-upgrade to 4.0.1-1-ARCH i have an ugly behavior. The bottom half of my screen flickers while on gdm. After login to gnome everything is normal and I have no problems. But in gdm the screen is flickering which is really annoying. I never had this behavior before. My laptop has such an hybrid graphics stack with intel and ati. Here are some logfiles but I cant find anything suspicious. Has anyone any idea what could be the cause of this behavior or which logfile to log into?
    greetings

    It happens to me as well but in xfce4 or openbox rather than on a display manager because I start X from `~/.bash_profile` upon login on tty1. If I logout and login again the problem goes away until I restart the system again.
    EDIT: Upgrading to linux 4.0.5-1 did not solve the issue.

  • Kernel Upgrade Breaks Network Connection

    My server uses:
    [15:48] (tunix@kulupler ~)$ pacman -Qs kernel
    local/kernel26 2.6.19.1-1
        The Linux Kernel and modules
    local/kernel-headers 2.6.19.1-1
        Kernel headers sanitized for use in userspace
    for kernel. The latest kernel upgrade (2.6.19.2-1) breaks network connection after ~5 minutes from the boot. When the network connections fails, kernel says:
    Jan 12 15:10:44 kulupler ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
    The connection never comes either after a network service restart, nor ifconfig eth0 up/down etc... The only solution is to restart, but after ~5 min. it fails again.
    So, as a solution, I just downgraded the kernel to 2.6.19.1-1 again.

    The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is putting your PowerBook on a separate subnet. To solve the problem, configure the AEBS so that it does not distribute IP addresses.

  • Kernel upgrade breaks wifi

    I tried a kernel upgrade from linux-3.0.7-1 to the latest 3.2 kernel but I have an odd issue. I am using wifi on my laptop which works fine but after two/three minutes just stops working. I cannot ping my gateway anymore, but the link still seems to be up.
    Does anyone know what I can do to troubleshoot this? For example, where are the logs which could give me pointers? How do I figure out what "driver" my card is using?
    Has anyone had this issue before? I am using an Aspire AS3810TG-734G32n
    Thanks!

    ajaxas wrote:Both of you should chek what wireless driver is in use: if it's ath9k, then read this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=134374
    The patches for the bug are already in 3.3-rc4 and will be in 3.2.7.
    Lol, yes, I've come across that post. (and several others). Unfortunately, I'm using the rt2800pci driver. I would have to know if I was to unload &reload reload my driver.
    No ath9k solution works for me. ...I did try, though.
    I am already using 3.2.7 and as I said, it did get better for me but is still buggy. However, my issue (as described) is clearly a bug in the code and probably not something that cannot easily be toubleshooted on the forums. I avoided raising a bug for my particular issue before 3.2.7 because driver related wifi bugs were already being dealt with and thusfare no one else has reproduced my symptoms. If it's been fully solved for ath9k in 3.2.7 but my problem persists, than I may need to. ...it may be a related but different problem.

  • [solved] last kernel upgrade - dropped to recovery shell

    Hi there,
    I just upgraded the kernel (=> 3.13.8-1-ARCH)
    The boot process drop me to a recovery shell, with this message:
    ERROR : device UUID=322d1dd7-5902-45e8-afe4-b5f912967b28 not found. Skipping fsck
    ERROR : unable to find root device UUID=322d1dd7-5902-45e8-afe4-b5f912967b28
    you are beeing dropped to a recovery shell
    type 'exit' to try and continue booting
    can't access tty, job control turned off
    But, this UUID=322d1dd7-5902-45e8-afe4-b5f912967b28 correspond to none of my devices.
    according to blkid
    /dev/sda1: UUID="3fca6c29-1988-4ccd-9d84-dec5b44ffe80" TYPE="ext4"
    /dev/sda2: UUID="f3fff5f5-b041-46e5-8749-01143684eb21" TYPE="crypto_LUKS"
    The system is on a lvm, encrypted with dm_crypt.
    I tried to correct manually the UUID of sda1 in /boot/grub/grub.cfg from a live usb, despite it is said to not edit manually the file. But it did not fix the problem.

    I didn't read the trouble shooting section on your first link.
    The wiki says :
    - To not panic. I'm good for the first advice: I don't panic ;-)
    - To boot from the Arch installer.
    So I downloaded the Arch installer on a usbcard and booted it on.
    - Apply # cryptsetup open --type luks /dev/mapper/MyStorage-rootvol on each lv.
    Because I don't remember the designations of lvs, I tryed variations of
    # cryptsetup open --type luks /dev/mapper/MyStorage-rootvol /dev/sda2
    It keeps telling me /dev/mapper/<designation> doesn't exist or access denied.
    Because it's not mounted, I tried then to mount sda2: it doesn't recognize crypto_luks.
    Then I tried "cryptsetup status /dev/sda2", but of course it says it doesn't find the device (since it's not mounted)
    PS - I have an instable access to internet

  • Another kernel panic [solved by kernel upgrade]

    # /etc/lilo.conf

    # disk=/dev/hda bios=0x80
    default=ArchCPIO
    timeout=50
    lba32
    prompt
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26
    label=ArchCPIO
    append="root=/dev/hda2 rootfstype=ext3"
    read-only
    initrd=/boot/kernel26.img
    Having a Problem with this (and also with mkinitrd). This is kernel 2.6.17.1.
    I dont get it.
    Blind
    BTW: /boot  is  /dev/hda1

    Sorry phrakture, you are right. Not enough information in the first post.
    First of all, let me say it is a SMP machine:
    dual Athlon MP 1900, 1GB RAM.
    The panic appears after LILO booted the ramdisk and he wants to mount the root filesystem as far as I understand it.
    As I am at work, I cannot provide you with the whole kernel message. As I remember, kinit complains about not being able to mount/find the root partition (which is why I added the rootfstype flag in the append). This did not really improve the situation (although now it stated that it mounted root)  but at the end it says:
    kernel panic: kinit::attempt to kill init.
    I will provide you with the full message as soon as I am home.
    I have the mkinitcpio.conf, because it is the same as on my laptop:
    # vim:set ft=sh
    # MODULES
    # The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
    # run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
    # in this array. For instance:
    # MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
    MODULES=""
    # BINARIES
    # This setting includes, into the CPIO image, and additional
    # binaries a given user may wish. This is run first, so may
    # be used to override the actual binaries used in a given hook.
    # (Existing files are NOT overwritten is already added)
    # BINARIES are dependancy parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
    BINARIES=""
    # FILES
    # This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
    # as-is and are not parsed in anyway. This is useful for config files.
    # Some users may wish to include modprobe.conf for custom module options,
    # like so:
    # FILES="/etc/modprobe.conf"
    FILES=""
    # HOOKS
    # This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
    # modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
    # Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
    # order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook>' for
    # help on a given hook.
    # 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
    # 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
    # 'modload' may be used in place of 'udev', but is not recommended
    # 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
    # Examples:
    # This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
    # No raid, lvm, or encrypted root is needed.
    # HOOKS="base"
    # This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
    # work as a sane default
    # HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
    # This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
    # No autodetection is done.
    # HOOKS="base udev ide scsi sata usb filesystems"
    # This setup assembles an ide raid array with an encrypted root FS.
    # Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H raid' for more information on raid devices.
    # HOOKS="base udev ide filesystems raid encrypt"
    # This setup loads an LVM volume group on a usb device.
    # HOOKS="base udev usb filesystems lvm"
    HOOKS="base udev ide filesystems"
    So nothing special. I am using the same kernel and a very similar setup on my laptop (/boot is on the first partition) - except they are reiserfs: No problem with it there.
    Do I have to install any extra software to use mkinitcpio/kinit/etc. that is not resolved in the dependencies? I am running the same Arch system on my Laptop since one year, so maybe I have some stuff on here, that is not on the other machine, which I only installed recently (and is only using current/extra).
    Thank you for your help,

    Hi,
    latest libevent upgrade (libevent-1.4.14b-2    -->  libevent-2.0.10-1) breaks Firefox (at least for x86_64).  Downgrading sorts the problem.

    Please read my post again - I gave you two possibilities.

  • ABAP+JAVA Kernel Upgrade

    Hi,
    I am planning to deploy SPS12 against solution manager system (ABAP+JAVA).
    But I have one quick question on Kernel Upgrade unicode system..
    SPS 12 Minimum Kernel Patch level should be 102, we are at 95 (NW2004s/AIX 5.3)
    Please suggest me the best approach :
    1)))
    1. ABAP Kernel Upgrade
    2. IGS upgrade
    3. Import ABAP Support Packages
    4.Upgrade JSPM Patch
    5.Deploy Java support packages via JSPM
    2)))
    1.Upgrade JSPM Patch
    2.Kernel Upgrade using JSPM
    3.Deploy Java support packages via JSPM
    4.Import ABAP support packages
    I heard that JSPM can import ABAP support packages, is this true (for SPS12)??
    Please advice the best and quick approach at step by step at high level.
    Regards
    Srinivas

    Hello Srinivas,
    As of now, the JSPM cannot be used to apply the ABAP Support packages and it has to be applied separately using the SPAM/SINT. So, I believe the first option mentioned by you is the right way to go ahead.

  • [SOLVED] Laptop freezes at startup after kernel upgrade to 3.13.6

    Some days ago I got a new Dell Sputnik 3 Laptop and installed Arch Linux with UEFI Boot and gummiboot as bootloader. The installation was successful.
    However two days ago there was an upgrade for the Linux Kernel from 3.13.5 to 3.13.6. When I restarted the Laptop after the upgrade of the kernel the Laptop freezed directly after pushing the power button (never got ahead of the initial DELL logo).
    I ran the DELL hardware diagnostics to identify a possible damage of the SSD but everything was ok. Than I booted into a live system ad mounted the root partition and there was no problem work on it. Additionally I change the value of timeout in gummiboots loader.conf (it was commented out before). Since than I got the gummiboot boot menu at least. So narrowing down, I think something happened during the kernel upgrade. Unfortunately I have no clue what could it be since I am convinced that at the installation process some days before I did everything like it was described at the beginners guide so automatic gummiboot update had to be possible.
    The drive is partitioned in the live system looks like this (look at sda):
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot
    └─sda2 8:2 0 235G 0 part /
    fstab like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=3f216fdb-f4c6-459a-856f-6f246d7a5bff / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=0F8F-2A3B /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
    # swap
    /swapfile none swap defaults 0 0
    I have and arch.conf in gummiboot looking like this:
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 rw
    and the loader.conf of gumiboot looking like this:
    timeout 5
    default 56cccedc29f1418ab2d8f1762ea09471-*
    Now, I don't know anymore how to proceed to identify the problem and hopefully solve it

    looks like this issue might be the same:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=172961&p=1
    If I find time I might try using an alternative to gummiboot to see if this works.
    Update: There also seems to be a reopened bug report on this https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33745

    you get the idea.
    Now upon inspection of my system I found that my /lib/modules/3.3.8-1-ARCH/kernel/ looks like this:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Jun 5 09:30 extramodules -> ../extramodules-3.3-ARCH
    drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Jun 5 09:29 kernel

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 355147 Jun 5 09:29 modules.symbols.bin
    so it makes sense that the directory and files are not found. The question is where is the problem?
    Was my Arch web install bad or is there a problem with today's kernel upgrade?

    Terminator & Gcool,
    Thank you both for your help.
    I ended up following the link Terminator posted in his reply and I was able to solve the problem.
    Unlike pineapple-biku (in the aforementioned thread) I did not chroot my machine I just:
    pacman -S udev
    pacman -S mkinitcpio
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -S linux
    and that solved the problem.
    It's odd, however, the number of people having similar problems upgrading the kernel ... seems like there is a bug somewhere that seems to
    affect people that "meet certain criteria".
    Thanks gain guys!!

    Note that all the missing modules are '.ko', rather than the gzipped '.ko.gz' that you should expect with the arch kernel. This indicates that depmod failed when you installed the kernel.

  • Downgrading the kernel without breaking my system

    Hello,
    A few months ago, I was using a old (2011) version of the kernel, because of regressions in WiFi support and in sound quality. But when /lib became a symlink and the glibc update came ( http://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib-d … a-symlink/ ), my system was broken, and I had to upgrade to a more recent version of the kernel using a LiveCD.
    So, is there a way to downgrade safely to an older version of the kernel without breaking my system?
    Thanks in advance.

    /lib is a symlink... what happens if you try to install the older kernel?
    Alternatively, re-build the package of an older kernel. (Though I doubt re-building is necessary, I offer it as a possibility.)

  • Is a reboot necessary after a kernel upgrade? [SOLVED/Answered =)]

    Hey folks, longtime arch user (since ~2006), first time registration/post.
    Just a dead-simple question: is it necessary for me to reboot my Arch systems after 'pacman -Syu' kernel upgrades? I've always done it out of sheer habit coming from a WIndows Sysadmin world where every darn update needs a reboot.
    Thanks in advance.

    Wow, thanks y'all for the fast replies. Sounds like my instincts were right .
    I have to say I'm blown away by the reliability of this Linux distro. Like I implied, my day job has for years required me to interact with Windows client & server OSes on a daily basis, and the level of random issues/headaches that crop up in that ecosystem is rather astounding. In contrast, I've had as of yet zero problems with my 2 Arch servers. I've had the same essential configs since the first installations of them years ago, and barring a couple reinstalls due to hard drive failures they've been smooth as silk the whole time. Kudos to that.

  • [SOLVED] nfsroot install broken after kernel upgrade 3.5.6 to 3.6.2

    It seems my nfsroot installations have broken after the kernel upgrade to 3.6.2.
    This is as far as the boot process gets now (hand copied from the screen):

    Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.

    On the server this is what is logged:

    Oct 16 21:10:14 tuon rpc.mountd[1323]: refused unmount request from 10.48.50.240 for /new_root (/): not exported
    It looks to me like the client is sending the mount request, the server accepts and then for some reason the client thinks it has failed. I can't even see anything strange in the wireshark traces comparing the working client (3.5.6) to the broken one (3.6.2).
    Anyone else using nfsroot successfully with the latest kernel?
    Any other ideas?
    (by the way - despite my directory names, this is using nfs v3 for the rootfs)

    Just to confirm that I also have this problem with nfsroot (nfs4 this time) with 3.6.2. Downgrading the kernel does make it go away.
    When it is working normally I do seem to get refused unmount messages at shutdown for some reason
    refused unmount request from 192.168.1.86 for / (/): not exported
    , but the /new_root bit is new and I have no idea where it comes from.
    refused unmount request from 192.168.1.86 for /new_root (/): not exported
    So I wonder if it asking for the wrong path.
    That unmount issue will be solved by FS#32021.
    Unfortunately, that doesn't help with mounting in the first place with 3.6.2

  • [SOLVED]X server problem after system upgrade - fonts garbled

    Hi all,
    I "pacman -Syu"-ed my system yesterday and now my X server is busted. Admittedly, I don't upgrade as often as I should and this was a pretty big upgrade for me so perhaps something broke due to that. Now I cannot see fonts and icons properly. All text except for the "system" fonts is hopelessly garbled. I can only see text clearly in xterm. Images show up just fine.
    Please click the link below for a clearer picture of the problem
    In addition to this, the system hangs (blank screen, but disk light still on) when I exit my X session.
    I went through all the logs but found nothing amiss....
    Pls help, I'd really like my nice archlinux system back....
    thanks in advance.

    SOLVED!
    The upgrade must have corrupted my intel video drivers because removing and reinstalling the i810 package fixed the problem.

    2. -> go to SMP and download the appropriate kernel by going
