[SOLVED] Space that isn't there?

I have come across an odd problem which refuses to be solved, and am afraid to reboot because I am pretty sure it won't come back up.
There seems to be missing space on my hard drive. I found that both everything.log and kernel.log were taking over 7GBs of space, and deleted them. My filesystem STILL shows that it is full though. I used pcmanfm to total up the amount of space everything was taking (excluding the /home directory since it is a separate partition), and it said I had only 5GBs of data on it. The total size of my partition is 18GBs.
Anyone have any ideas on what is going on? here is my fstab, in case it helps:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
#/dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sda1 / ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda2 /home ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda3 swap swap defaults 0 0

I just realized my cats unplugged my external hard drive, so the disk was unplugged without being unmounted first. That is why it is reporting that way.
running du -sh /* reveals nothing, also. The largest folders, it tells me, are /usr and /var, with 2.4 and 1.5GBs, respectively. I had already taken care of the 7GB logs in /var, so that is why it is no longer a problem. Here is the full output (minus the permission denied stuff), remember that /home is on a different partition:
4.5M /bin
17M /boot
136K /dev
3.2M /etc
23G /home
80M /lib
16K /lost+found
20K /media
4.0K /mnt
407M /opt
0 /proc
4.0K /root
13M /sbin
12K /srv
0 /sys
1.5M /tmp
2.4G /usr
1.5G /var

My 2008 Mac Pro sees a second monitor that isn't there. It's the original ATI 2600 video card, and I'm running Mountain Lion. It says there is a VGA monitor plugged in to the second port, but there is no second monitor. If I connect the cable to the second port on the video card, I get no display at all. This seems like the video card to me, but it started happening after upgrading to Mountain Lion.

  • Space which isn't there prints in a word

Some time back I produced a brochure for a friend in AW Draw. Some more copies are needed and I have changed from inkjet to laser printer (both Epson: Stylus C70 to Acculaser C2600).
When I print one word now has a rogue space in it (word = 'large' with a space after the l, other la combinations look OK). The space is not actually there. Everything else looks OK.
I have tried rephrasing the sentence, trashing prefs and changing from justified to left align. The space stays.
Fractional character widths change reflows so is not an option.
    Any ideas please?

    Yvan,
    Many thanks for response.
I tried your suggestion without success. I also tried changing 'large' to 'big', rephrasing the line and using a different font. A gap always appeared somewhere in roughly (not precisely) the same place in that line.
I've also noticed that justification is not perfect, the right margin of text throughout the document is slightly ragged (but not as ragged as left align).
Your idea got me thinking, however. I opened up a very old friend - PublishIt! Easy - pasted the offending text into PIE then copied it back to AW. The gap has now gone (but justification is still imperfect).

  • IMac screen suddenly recognizes VGA display that isn't there? Big problems

    Hello:
My dad was using his iMac G5 when the display went to a blue screen (detected an external display) and formatted to take up a small amount (10-12 inches) of the 17" screen. As I was writing this, the detect display blue screen again flashed and returned to normal.
Under display prefs, it listed a VGA display. However, there isn't even an adapter in the adapter port. Does anyone know what is going on here? I live several hundred miles away and it just so happens that I was here for the weekend. I would like to resolve this asap.
    No AppleCare.
    Thanks,
    Tyler

Sorry to chime in without a solution, only another query along the same lines. I have a co-worker who's imac (24" 2.33 intel) sometimes starts up thinking that there's a second smaller display connected. The first time this happened, the dock didn't show up (she had it set along the right-hand side, it was apparently on the "other" screen), she restarted and it would then show up. A couple of days ago I was doing some updates, restarted, and the dock disappeared again. I noticed that the mouse fully disappeared off the right side. Having seen this behavior when two displays were connected in the past, I went to the display preferences panel and it registered two screens, the main one and a much smaller one on the right side. I clicked the "detect displays" button, which reset it correctly back to a single monitor, thinking issue solved. But this morning the same issue occurred. Easy to fix, granted, but I was hoping there might be a more permanent solution? I don't think there's a single displays preferences file that might be replaced, and I'd just as soon not mess around with pitching the full system preferences file unless that'd be the only solution...
Thanksmuch in advance, and have a good one!

  • How can I remove a tablet device that isn't there?

In one of our test environments we've got an Xserve running OSX 10.5.6, inside is running Server 10.5 in VMWare Fusion.
Now, the VM thinks it has a tablet device installed, as is evidenced by the ink tab showing up in system preferences (the host does not have the ink option there). Obviously there is no tablet device installed. The VM was set up by one of our IT guys who has already reinstalled it, noting no options during setup about a tablet device.
This problem is causing one piece of software to not work in the VM, or at least, the UI doesn't. There are thousands of console messages reading "QCocoaView handleTabletEvent: This tablet device is unknown (received no proximity event for it). Discarding event"
Question is, how can I remove the tablet device so that this software will start working? I've checked all through VMWare Fusion's options/preferences & couldn't find anything there and Googling has turned up nothing so far.

  • HP client security looking for fingerprintscanner that isn't there.

Whenever I want to log onto my laptop I have to wait for the fingerprint scanner software to say that my fingerprintscanner isnt there. After that notification I can just log on with my password. My question is: how do I get the software to stop looking for a scanner and take me to the normal login screen immediately?
Extra piece of information: if I run the HP client security app I always get the final screen of initialization and cannot change any settings.
A lot of thanks in advance!

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
Keep in mind that I don't own a business notebook -- I don't run your flavor of Client Security software although I am familiar with the security software that runs on the consumer HP notebooks.
Please do make sure you have the means to log into your computer prior to removing the program.
    A couple of ideas:
    Before you make any changes:
Create a Restore Point:   Create a Restore Point – Win7 OR  Create a restore point Win8
Caveat:  Windows 8.1 does include its own Native fingerprint Logon software that is NOT dependent on Client Security software.  Removing the Client Security program does not affect the Windows Native Logon software.  Should that software exist and be active on your system, it must be handled differently.  You might easily dissuade both the Client Security and the Native Logon
Windows key >>type anywhere on the screen  pc > Click on PC Settings >
            Accounts > Sign-in options
If PC Settings does not stop Client Security from bugging your trip:  If you are not interested in using the Client Security software -- for whatever reason -- then I should think that you could uninstall the program from your computer from Programs and Features.
If you do not have an extra admin account on the system, you might consider adding one -- you don't need to USE the account -- but it might "save your backside" down the road.  You do not want to be the one who writes in and says, "I am locked out of my computer!"
Create a User Account with Administrative Privileges – Windows 8-8.1
Reminder:  An extra admin account will not protect you from the lockup of the bootup BIOS password that happens to so many people.  Locking the BIOS at boot usually only locks out the owner, by the way.  Smiling.
Once you uninstall any program, Restart / Reboot the computer -- even if the system does not insist upon the reboot -- and log in.  Windows loves a good reboot!

  • New Mac Pro keeps looking for a server that isn't there

So, I just got my new Mac Pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) the other day.  I used MIgration Asssisant to transfer most files from my old Power Mac G5.   Computers were connected thru a hub.
Then I turned on file sharing on the old machine to get some other info transferred.  I then shut down file sharing, physically disconnecting the hub and connecting the new Mac Pro to my DSL modem with an ethernet cable.
Now when I boot up the new machine, I get a message
"There was a problem connecting to the server  'Joe Blow's Power Mac G5'.
"The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and try again."
I get this message three separate times ove a couple of minutes.
Under the "Go" button in the Finder menu, I've clicked on  "Connect to server..." and cleared the old mac out of the list.
    What am I missing??
    Thanks

Common causes of this issue include the following:
Aliases in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server.
    Bookmarks in the Preview application.
See iMovie Troubleshooting: Connection Failed, Server Does Not Exist
    Otherwise, proceed as below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Import shows an iPhone that isn't there

Whenever I open Import panel on Aperture it displays an icon for my iPhone, along with blank tiles for photographs in the import panel, even though my iphone is not connected.
I have tried re-starting and re-booting to no avail. The "ghost" iPhone still appears.
If I actually connect my iPhone this also shows up but in this instance I can see the photos in the import panel.
Is there any way I can get rid of this ghost version of my iPhone?

Glad to hear it seems fixed (for now). The iPad might have had an affect of the situation, you hadn't mentioned that you also had a iPad connected.
If you're feeling brave you could try reversing the steps, plug-in both iPhone and iPad then disconnect the phone and see if the phantom phone comes back.
And while I agree that it is annoying not to get a firm resolution it still beats no resolution at all

  • Frontrow displaying a podcast that isn't there

Whenever I access Frontrow, and go into my podcasts section frontrow displays a podcast that I no longer have (diggnation small version, replaced it with the HD edition) and it says 1/4 beside it and when I select it, it will show a description for an episode. However, when I go into that folder, it says that there is no content to display. I am confused because I deleted this podcast from my itunes so I thinking it is a problem with my itunes library file. How might I fix this?

Yes, I did migrate a lot of info from the G4, but when I tried to run Myst Revelation, it said the file was corrupt. So I deleted it, and by using the finder, I searched for anything related to Myst and deleted it. But still, when I try to install a new copy from my Myst discs, it says that I already have a version installed that is updated from the version I have? I did get the downloaded update on my G4, but never got to use it on the imac yet. No, there is not a Myst uninstaller. As for the new account, yes I have tried that. There must be a hidden file somewhere that I cannot find. I have checked the library and preferences, but no help. Has me baffled. OS 9 was a lot easier on this problem, but.......

Since upgrading to Mavericks, 10.9.1, pictures that come attached to emails no longer display.  There is only a blank space that after about 1 minute, has a small box with a question mark.  Double clicking on the box will open the image in a separate window.  It's very slow and tedious for multiple images.  How can I go back to attached and displayed  images?  If I click on "Forward", the images appear instantly in the email to be forwarded.

    Scott,
My problem seemed to fix itself.  Or, by shutting down the computer one night, instead of putting it to sleep, may have reset something.  Since updating to Mavericks, I always (or usually) let the computer sleep overnight or anytime I'm walking away from it.  A few days ago, I was updating notes for my kids about how to find all my stuff and how to turn on my computer, so I wanted to rewrite the start-up procedures for the iMac, just in case they ever need to.  Well, I shut it down one night so the following morning, I could write down each step.  Lo and behold, the images, etc. are all there again!  Solved, but I'm not sure why.

  • Isn't there a way for to repair the itunes store so that I can buy from other stores?

Well, I wanted to buy music from other countries' stores but my itunes store doesn't let me do that. So isn't there anyway for Apple co. to solve this problem as I have many friends having the same problem.

It's a copyright issue. There's nothing for Apple to solve.

    No.
You need to delete content from your iphone.

The file to download the app for Android is not working from my phone--it says that the file isn't there. However it does see the one for the Iphone (even though it can't use it). I've tried it multiple times and continue to get the same message: "NOT FOUND The requested item could not be found". I also tried through the Market application on the phone but ended-up with the same result.
I'm very computer literate and am pretty sure the problem is on your end. If this is the case then no one can download the app. I considered that perhaps because it's still in Beta that it was removed due to some other type of software issue. I would really like to use Firefox on my new Droid (2.0); when with this be available?

Firefox will not appear in the Market for most phones with incompatible hardware. You can check if your phone is supported here:
    https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android
Even on some supported devices, a bug in the Market software prevents Firefox from showing up. This may be related to the fairly recent Android Market app update. If you go to Settings/Applications/Market and choose "Uninstall" you can uninstall the update, and then search for and install Firefox from the marketplace.
Or, if you have a supported phone, you can download the app directly by typing this address into your phone's browser: http://bit.ly/fxbeta3
(Note: To download the app directly for an AT&T phone, you will have to search for instructions on "sideloading" the APK file, since AT&T disables the option to install from non-Market sources.)

  • Isn't there a way to re-own an app that has been previously refunded?

    Hello all,
There is an app I purchased a long time ago which was refunded. I want to re-own it but I can't. Here is my problem:
This app was in my "Purchased" section until it was refunded; naturally it is not there at the moment (since it was refunded).
The thing is I want to re-own it (it used to be $0.99 but it is free at the moment). I can re-download the app without any charge and without any problems and use it in my iPhone, but the tricky part is that it doesn't show up in my "Purchased" section. Isn't there a way to re-own it and make it show up in my Purchased section?
    Has anyone experienced similar problems?
I also tried to de-authorize all my computers and re-authorize them and re-download it, but the app still doesn't show up in my Purchased section.
It is not in the Hidden Purchases section either.
I mailed iTunes Support but they didn't understand my problem. Maybe one of you can help...
    Best wishes.

It is currently not possible to administor iTunes Match without using iTunes on a computer.
