[Solved] Startx black screen on nvidia macbook

startx goes to a black screen, Xorg.0.log doesn't report anything unusual (that I noticed). I've been using arch for a few years, but this is my first install on a mac, and my knowledge is rather thin in places, so I apologize if I'm missing something obvious. any help would be appreciated. here's my log. I have nvidia graphics
btw this is the first time I've ever posted, (although these forums have helped me tremendously over the years)

start up to black screen 2011 15" macbook pro does the start up chime and apple screen, then to a black screen, mouse arrow is visible and keyboard lit. help please

I had the same issue with my Macbook Pro too. You can follow this steps below:
    1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds
    2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving
    3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.
    4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball
    5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping).
Apparently it's an issue with an automatic update that never quite got past the login screen.
    Hope this helps!

  • HELP!! Black screen on my MacBook Pro after leaving open and on for over 8 hours.

    Hi everyone,
This is the first time I'm using the discussion board as I haven't had any problems with my MacBook Pro since I bought it in November 2010. However, yesterday, I left my laptop on and open for over 8 hours without realising. When I came back to my laptop it had a black screen that just wouldn't go away. I pressed all the buttons on my keypad to wake it up but this didn't work. The caps lock key lights up when pressed and the volume button makes the clicky noise when turned up and down but the screen is still black. I have tried turning the laptop on/off using the power button several times. When it starts up it makes the usual sounds and I can hear that it is on but the screen is still black.
I do not use my laptop for anything complicated. I really only use it to browse the web. I hope someone can help me. I have tried to make an appointment with the Genius Bar but there are no available appointments at my local one. I'm not a mac expert and don't understand technical words so please speak in layman terms otherwise I won't understand. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

    If you've a 15" version, maybe...
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
             com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
             com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • [Solved] X black screen crash

When I enter the command startx I get a black screen and then it crashes and returns to the command line. This has been happening ever since my compter turned itself off (I might have knocked it but I'm not sure), it was the first time it had been turned off since two updates. I have reinstalled the NVIDIA propriatery drivers and Xorg, tried a new xorg.conf, downgraded to nvidia 331.20.1 and installed nvidia-beta all to no avail(I don't wan't to use Nouveau because some Steam games don't work with it and it).

But it gives a black screen. Also when I blacklist the i915 driver or force only the nvidia driver to be loaded in xorg.conf
Any ideas? Help is greatly appreciated

First of all, the current stable driver from the repos is newer than what you have installed (349). Arch is quick on the uptake with new software versions, there's seldom a need to go into AUR if what you need is the latest driver.
Second, your notebook is likely using optimus, so you should be using Bumblebee and read through this article to find out how to set it up: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

  • [Xorg/startx] black screen with startx

I notice a strange bug with the new version of xorg packages if I use the "startx" method for running KDE4,
    description of this bug :
    1) I type "startx -- vt1"
    2) KDE4 loads successfully
    3) I run a 3D game ( or glxgears )
    4) I choose the "logout" menu in KDE4
    5) then I type again "startx -- vt1" to start again KDE4
    6) KDE4 loads but if I move the mouse I get a black screen, but I can see the HDD led continues to light
this bug doesn't occur if I start KDE with KDM,
    my system:
    - archlinux 32 bits
    - laptop with pentium 4 2.4 Ghz 1.2 Gb ram
    - SIS645DX chipset
    - ati radeon 9000 AGP ( I use DRI2 with KMS, xf86-video-ati driver )

Sorry, I will use code tag next time.
I deleted xorg.conf and it works.
It seems a little bit strange, because xorg.conf is generated automatically by X itself. Why xorg.conf does not work?

The fix is to replace the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

  • Black screen on startup Macbook Air 11 2013

    Hello,
I decided to reinstall my OS X 10.10
So after restart i held "cmd+r", open Disk Utility and format my ssd, then start downloading OS X 10.10
But suddenly an error appeared, and I noticed that there is no SSD in Disk Utility anymore
Then I decided to reboot my macbook and try to reinstall my OS X one more time, so i held power button for 10 sec and then start again
After this the only thing i have is a black screen
I tried reset NVRAM and SMC - no results
    Cmd+R - not working
I made installation drive and tried boot using option button - same
Every command I tried - nothing appear on the screen
Can You help me with this?
    Thanks.
    P.S. Macbook Air 11 2013 128GB MODEL A1465

You took all the reasonable actions that can be expected. Read the following Apple Support document to be sure there isn't anything you may have overlooked:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
It seems unlikely that a catastrophic failure would coincide with what you did, so perform the NVRAM and SMC resets again, making sure you did both of them properly. After that, schedule a Genius Bar Reservation.
The SMC reset procedure is linked in the above document. The NVRAM reset is as follows:
    NVRAM reset:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • Black Screen when opening MacBook

Not all the time but a lot more often recently when I open my MacBook up it'll show like I never closed it and then goes to the login screen and then a black screen.  After that it takes at least 5 minutes to turn on.  Help.

    Try reseting your prram.
    1. Power off your MacBook.
    2. Wait a couple of minutes (2-3).
    3. Hold down Command(apple), Option, P, R and the power button.
    4. WHen you hear the chime keep holding them but let go of the power button.
    5. The screen will go black then will chime again after awhile.
    6. Let go and wait for it to start up.
This may help, im not 100% sure but this has happened to me before.
Maybe not the same thing but a somewhat simular problem.
    Hope I helped!

  • Black screen when opening MacBook Air

Now and then, when I open up my MacBook Air, the screen is all black and do not respond to any key action - it is not shut down. Most of the times the start screen is there asking for login. The only way to get around the black screen is to force a restart.
It's a mid 2013 13 inch MBA 1.7 GHz i7 with 8 GB RAM running Maverics 10.9.3. This blackscreen problem has evolved since some of the latest OS updates.
Anyone exeperience the same thing and found a solution?

It's in warranty? If so, then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • Quicktime playing white or black screen on Intel MacBook

Please Please Help! Am I the only person who continues to have trouble with Quicktime. I edit in FCP 6.0.5 and often deliver films as .mov or other codecs such as .flv which often means exporting as .mov as a first step. Working with three Macs (as detailed below), cutting on Powermac, running codec on G4 to free up Powermac and taking .mov films to show clients on the Intel MacBook or sending disks with .mov or mpeg files. So often I end up not being able to show the films, or worse the client is sitting in their office wondering why it looks like I have sent a disk with nothing on! (there was stuff on it). The most common problem being sound but no picture, either a white, or just recently a black screen! I do get the the ‘Unsupported Codec’ - ‘Missing Component’ error and end up on the useless component page at Apple. I have not once installed anything on that page that has helped fix a problem!
The bizarre problem is I can play any of the Quicktime films on both G4 and Powermac but not on Intel MacBook???? G4 doesn’t have FCP so as with MacBook icons default to Quicktime icons but as would make sense icons on the Powermac which is FCP installed show as FCP icons.
I have tried opening the FCP .mov films in Quicktime (buy the way Quicktime Pro 7.6 (472) is installed on all three machines) and exporting as Quicktime movies hoping it removes any FCP data or codec information, but this doesn’t work either? The film will still not play on the MacBook.
This problem seems to happen around upgrades..? is this a red herring? Is anyone else getting really VERY frustrated by the ongoing flaky Quicktime behaviour. I have to use Apples codec because I use FCP professionally but it often makes me look like an amateur. I’ll try any possible fixes anyone has. Thanks very much in advance!
    INFO for the quicktime film I have been having this latest problem with;
Format - Apple HDV 1080i50, 1440x1080, (1888x1062), Millions, 16-bit integer, (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.000 khz
    FPS - 25
    Data Size - 1.01 gb
    Data Rate - 26.55 mbits/s
    Normal size - 1920x1080
    G4 Powermac (Duel - non intel), OS10.5.6, 1.25ghz, 1.25gb memory, Quicktime Pro 7.6 (472), FCP 6.0.5, Plugin Perian 1.1.3
    G4, OS10.4.11, 800mhz, 1gb memory, Quicktime Pro 7.6 (472), Plugin DivX, Plugin Flip4Mac
MacBook Intel Duo, OS10.5.6, 1.83ghz, 1gb memory, Quicktime Pro 7.6 (472), Plugin Perian 1.1.3, Plugin DivX
If you’ve go this far you’ve read all this info, thanks for your time and I hope you can help.

Your file uses a video codec (Apple HDV) that is only available to a machine with Final Cut installed. It is very "raw" (lightly compressed).
What you want to do is export from Final Cut and use H.264 Video codec and AAC audio. This file will play on any machine (Mac or Windows) that has QuickTime 7 installed and meets the high definition playback specifications.
The 800 G4 and the 1.25 dual G4 will both drop frames during playback because they don't meet the HD playback requirements.

  • Black screen on startup MacBook Pro

I am using a MacBook Pro IntelCD with OS10.5.4 all has been working satisfactorily till today. Today when I boot up it displays the grey screen with Apple logo, then spinning wheel and eventually goes to a black screen. Starting with safe boot does exactly the same although it spends a long time, 6-10 mins, in the spinning wheel zone. Booting into Windows is fine and the computer works perfectly.
Obviously something is wrong with Mac OS. Is there something to try before having to re-install the OS. Thanks for your help.
    Mike

Is this black screen with white type that eventually ends with a command line prompt or just a black screen? If the former then the computer is booting into Darwin or single-user mode. If the former then see these two discussion threads for a possible solution:
    Computer booting into Darwin Fix
Apple - Support - Discussions - Booting to Darwin-BSD Screen
If the solutions proposed in the above do not help, then you will have to reinstall OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Help solving the Black Screen of Death

    Hello There!
I have an HP Touchsmart 610-1100z 3 days ago I put it to sleep and when I tried to wake it up nothing happened.  I restarted it and it was just a black screen, no HP logo ect, but I could hear all the fans and drives working.  I checked the light issue with a desk lamp and revealed that is not the problem.  I then tied the BIOS F10 to F5 work around with no luck.  I have gotten it to boot up twice since then by repeatedly turning it off and on until by sheer luck it just boots up.  When it boots up there is absolutely no issue but clearly something is eskew that I would like to fix so that I don't live in fear of turning off my computer.  Does anyone have any ideas?

  • [SOLVED] KDE black screen on resume after suspend

Yesterday I wasted the day investigating this and at the end the problem was not suspending the computer but the KDE lock screen as explained here. I thought to open a new thread so other people would not wasted their time looking into the wrong issue as I did.
Anyway, this is what happens, when KDE resumes, it only displays a black screen and the mouse pointer. The problem appears only when the system suspends through KDE (through the menu, the global shortcut or closing the laptop lid), suspending the system directly through systemd (systemctl suspend) or dbus (qdbus --system org.freedesktop.login1 /org/freedesktop/login1 org.freedesktop.login1.Manager.Suspend true) works fine.
The way to recover is to kill kdm (ctrl+atl+backspace) or to restart kdm (switch to a terminal and execute systemctl restart kdm) .
As explained in the post #12 of this thread,  if you use a transparent widget style (I use Oxygen Transparent) you have to add the lock screen to the background opacity exception list, for that go to:
System Settings ->   Application Appearance ->  Style -> Applications -> Configure … (to the right of 'Widget style') ->  General -> Exceptions...
And select  both "kscreenlocker" and "kscreenlocker_greet", if they do not exist add them through the 'Add' button.

    Hi,
I am also having this issue. After resuming from suspend-mode, I get a black screen with a mouse-cursor. I can follow you instructions up until "-> General". I don't see an "Exceptions"-button/area where I can select the kscreenlocker exceptions. Can you help?

  • SOLVED - Qosmio Black Screen (Nvidia Driver Problem)

I have a Qosmio X505-860 with the NVidia 360M display adapter. I experienced the occasional "Display Adapter has stopped responding and recovered" screen flicker as well as the adapter turning off upon log off, switch user, close lid (even with sleep disabled) etc.
I installed the ancient drivers provided by Toshiba and lo and behold, no problems -- except games look like crap.
Through trial and error I discovered that straight NVidia drivers work up to Verde 260.99, the last of that generation of drivers. As soon as the driver is updated to the next gen, starting with 266.58, the problems reoccur.
Through a long process of plodding through log files, tracing processes and scanning dlls with disassembly software, which I will not discuss here for copyright reasons, I linked the crashing to the NVidia Control Panel App rather than the actual driver. I am not entirely sure on this as I was hurrying through things and employing a lot of guess-and-check. I know for the 266.58 driver, renaming System32/nvapi64.dll solves the problem, though doing so will also make your system wonky...
Anyway, what eventually solved it for me, I believe, was uninstalling the (266.58) driver via the Control Panel. The computer went into No-Driver-640x480 mode, rebooted, and came back up. I could only see about an eighth of my desktop, but that didn't last long as Windows prompted me to reboot again for "changes to take place." After the second reboot, the NVidia Control Panel worked and showed version 301.42 (latest at the time of writing), even though the driver was absent from the list of Programs and Features. So far I have been able to Switch User and Log Off and back on without any trouble. I haven't tested it much, but this problem was 100% reproducible before.
I hope this helps somebody. If it doesn't work, let me know, I will try harder to figure out what exactly in my afternoon of registry editing and file scrambling did the trick.

That's great troubleshooting! Thanks for sharing your findings.
