[SOLVED] Strange line in /etc/hosts

I was checking my /etc/hosts when I came across this line:
64.50.236.214 releases.mozilla.org
Should that line be there? Is it safe?
That ip points to a mirror site.

toxygen wrote:you didn't add it?  you can always comment it out with a hash # and see if it gives you problems (restart network afterwards (sudo /etc/rc.d/network restart)).  doesnt look like it would do any harm though, other than limiting you to that one mirror
No, I didn't. That's why I was so worried.
Edit: I can download plugins with Firefox even without that line. I found out that my brother had used an arch live cd to change /etc/hosts because he couldn't download plugins, the problem mcmillan mentioned.
Thank you guys for quick answers.

  • Pacman ignores /etc/hosts

    I use csslayer-aur-repo which is placed on googlecode.com server, however csslayer-aur-repo.googlecode.com sometimes returns IP of server which doesn't seem to have csslayer-aur-repo.db.tar.gz file. As a workaround i've put csslayer-aur-repo.googlecode.com in /etc/hosts with an IP which works just fine. I've tested it with wget and ping, and both of them seem to use this "new" IP address. However pacman seems to ignore /etc/hosts and picks that random IP which mostly leads to "404 not found" error when doing pacman -Syu/Syy/Sy.
    Here is my /etc/hosts
    # /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
    #<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost Archie
    209.85.135.82 csslayer-aur-repo.googlecode.com
    # End of file
    and here is the repo entry from pacman.conf:
    [csslayer-aur-repo]
    Server = http://csslayer-aur-repo.googlecode.com/files

    Yup, wget fetches http://csslayer-aur-repo.googlecode.com … .db.tar.gz just fine and it uses the IP specified in /etc/hosts.
    Surely pacman does not deploy its own DNS server, but seems to ignore /etc/hosts. If i remove csslayer line from /etc/hosts then wget also will fail.

  • Mpc problem: getaddrinfo not checking /etc/hosts?

    The source of this question is my attempt to get mpc to contact mpd on my localhost when the internet is down. When the internet is up it works fine, but when i'm not connected to the internet, running mpc behaves as follows:
    I seem to have tracked this down to a problem in getaddrinfo (possibly in my sytem configuration?). I created a piece of test code (below) that does a gethostbyname and then a getaddrinfo. On this computer, both work when connected to the internet, but getaddrinfo fails when disconnected. I tested the same code on an ubuntu computer and it getaddrinfo worked even when disconnected from the internet.
    My /etc/hosts and /etc/host.conf seem to be set properly. glibc is 2.8-3. I would have thought that getaddrinfo having such a problem would cause more errors than just in mpc, but I haven't noticed any.
    I'd really appreciate any help.
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <sys/types.h>
    #include <sys/socket.h>
    #include <netdb.h>
    int main (void)
    struct addrinfo *addrinfo;
    int i, error;
    struct hostent *h;
    h = gethostbyname("localhost");
    if (h) {
    for (i=0; i < h->h_length - 1; i++)
    printf("%d.", h->h_addr_list[0][i]);
    printf("%d\n", h->h_addr_list[0][i]);
    } else {
    printf("no such host\n");
    error = getaddrinfo("localhost", NULL, NULL, &addrinfo);
    if (error) {
    printf("host not found: %s\n", gai_strerror(error));
    } else {
    while (addrinfo) {
    printf("%d %d %d\n",AF_INET,AF_INET6,addrinfo->ai_family);
    addrinfo = addrinfo->ai_next;
    return 0;

    Alas, setting MPD_HOST does not help. If there is some way to give mpc an ip address instead of a hostname, that might help. Just putting 127.0.0.1 as MPD_HOST doesn't work.
    I also really think there is something really weird going on with getaddrinfo.
    Thanks for the idea.

  • Strange entry in the /etc/hosts file

    Hi,
    While doing some testings with my network this afternoon, I noticed that there's this strange line in my /etc/hosts file:
    ::1 localhost
    Anybody has any idea what the "::1" is for? The only thing related to network that I had recently installed is VPN Tracker. Could it be VPN Tracker that added that line to the hosts file?
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    Not sure what it means... may be a 16 bit number though! :-D

    JThe format for the hosts file is
    ipaddress alias1 alias2 alias3 alias4 Most shops will just have two aliases, one with just the machine name, one with the fully qualified domain.machine name. In reality, you can do whatever makes sense:

  • Setting up /etc/hosts (SOLVED)

    How can I do that. Every time I launch Xfce4 I get a message about adding my name to the file. I add it like:
    213.112.235.47 wilma.bredbandsbolaget.se wilma
    And the message disappears but some programs dont work. Any suggestions?

    Just put the hostname you use in etc/rc.conf at the end of the line with localhost in /etc/hosts and you'll be fine.
    The code below shows the way i have set it up.
    networking part of etc/rc.conf
    # NETWORKING
    HOSTNAME="julius"
    /etc/hosts
    # /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
    #<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost julius
    # End of file

  • In the command line how do I find the etc/host file? is there one?

    I am trying to work remotely and use our lotus notes system (which is from a windows based server) but I have to connect to the mail server and our IT person wants to find the equivalent of the Windows host file or host table . is there such a file? we went here
    http://linux.die.net/man/5/hosts
    hosts(5) - Linux man page
    Name
    hosts - The static table lookup for host names
    Synopsis
    /etc/hosts
    thanks

    Since you're using a Macintosh, quit reviewing linux stuff. These, when entered in the Terminal app (inside /Applications/Utilities/) should point you in the right direction:
    *cat /etc/hosts*
    details in:
    *man hosts*
    FWIW, you should search the Unix forum (or post your query there) under OS X Technologies.

  • [SOLVED] globbing in /etc/hosts or something similar

    Is there any way to glob addresses in /etc/hosts?
    If not, which seems to be the case, is there something else that could achieve a similar effect?
    Example:
    127.0.0.1 *.localhost # enable subdomains on localhost (with Apache virtual hosts)
    It's not that tedious to manually add them and I could probably write a script, but it would be useful for other things (127.0.0.1 *.google.* )

    BIND supports DNS wildcards, which seems to be what you're after.
    Just for fun I went through the process of setting this up, and it's not too difficult.  I did need to do a bit of research to figure out the syntax for the DNS zones.  Fortunately, there are plenty of resources which describe this.
    Briefly, the process I went through for wildcard domain resolution:
    1) Install bind and invoke named
    2) Ensure the nameserver is included in resolv.conf and that the DNS service is in the host DB of /etc/nsswitch.conf
    3) Edit /etc/named.conf and the corresponding zone file.
    There's an article on debian-administration which focuses on exactly the case you proposed.

  • Strange lines and dots with Radeon 1900XT

    I have a strange problem with the output from my video card.
    My setup is a Mac Pro 2.66 with a Ati Radeon 1900XT card and two 20" cinema displays.
    Sometimes, and for some reason often with dark grey tints or black the videocard renders a single pixel (red, green, magenta as far as I have seen). At first I thought it was a stuck pixel in my display but when I drag the problematic window the pixel moves too (I can also screencap it). If I move the window slowly I see a trail of pixels appearing. I also get lines (not full screen width) with sites as youtube over the video (but wider than the video). Anyone familiar with this, or suggestions? Can't tell if it is a hardware or software failure, after reboot it doesn't appear for a few days.
    cheers Trepn

    Having just discovered this thread and having very similar symptoms to everyone else, (lines appearing etc - pic here - http://theappleofmyi.com/blog/?p=1301, I updated the firmware on the X1900 Xt, which did nothing to help....
    Then out came the card and I used a rocket blower to remove a HUGE amount of congealed dust from the fins and as I type this, it seems to have solved the problem!
    So, I urge you all to follow the advice given by a few people, and clean your card out!

  • Sshd ignores /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny

    Hello everyone,
    I've just found out that sshd ignores /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny completely on my machine. It doesn't make use of tcp_wrappers. I am using the standard Arch package. Either my settings are wrong, or this is a severe security problem. It was a terrible surprise to find out that my server is under severe dictionary attacks all the time, despite the denyhosts script I am using.
    These are my settings:
    /etc/hosts.deny:
    ALL: ALL
    /etc/hosts.allow:
    # some nfs daemons: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
    sshd sshd1 sshd2: ALL EXCEPT /etc/hosts.evil
    mysqld: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
    /etc/hosts.evil:
    195.113.21.131
    60.10.6.53
    A simple experiment to verify the settings:
    [root@charon etc]# tcpdmatch -d -i /etc/xinetd.conf sshd 195.113.21.131
    warning: sshd: no such process name in /etc/xinetd.conf
    client: address 195.113.21.131
    server: process sshd
    matched: hosts.deny line 5
    access: denied
    [root@charon etc]# tcpdmatch -d -i /etc/xinetd.conf sshd 195.113.21.130
    warning: sshd: no such process name in /etc/xinetd.conf
    client: address 195.113.21.130
    server: process sshd
    matched: hosts.allow line 10
    access: granted
    This seems to be fine. But when I go to the machine 195.113.21.131, I can simply log in with no trouble at all.
    This is really strange. Does it have something to do with the xinetd warning? I am not using xinetd... Maybe I'm doing something wrong. If you have experienced such a trouble, please give me a hint.

    elasticdog wrote:So should our package not have the ListenAddress 0.0.0.0 line uncommented by default?  My guess would be that since it listens on all local addresses by default, we're just overwriting that when specifying 0.0.0.0, which isn't valid.  That was users don't have to specify their local IP address.  Unless I'm wrong, shouldn't this be a bug/feature request for the packager?
    This doesn't seem to be a package bug... IMHO, sshd must respect all the settings in hosts.deny and hosts.allow, regardless the IP address it listens on. The behaviour I noticed seems to be much more complicated. Basic settings (daemon name mentioned in hosts.*) worked, as far as I didn't want a "per IP" configuration. For example, including the daemon in hosts.allow really enabled remote connections, but any closer specifications (subdomains, EXCEPT operator...) were ignored. Access was simply granted without further evaluation. Excluding sshd from hosts.allow worked as one would assume. When I specified ListenAddress, everything started to work properly. This is mysterious. There are millions of computers using tcp wrappers and ssh, so it's hard to believe there could be a bug.

  • How to save etc/hosts

    Hi all,
    Please help sorting my terminal, I'm having problem with my iTune everytime I want to update or restore my ipad or iphone, it keep saying "this device isn't eligible for the requested build"
    Now I tried to edit the etc/hosts using the Terminal, but suddenly all the script
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1          localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1             localhost
    fe80::1%lo0          localhost
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
    are all gone i think i accidentally deleted it. so what I did was I copy this from forum and paste it to terminal.
    But i'm having problem how to save it, when I press ^O it goes like this:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1          localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1             localhost
    fe80::1%lo0          localhost
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
    File Name to Write: etc/hosts
    ^G Get Help         ^T To Files         M-M Mac Format      M-P Prepend
    ^C Cancel           M-D DOS Format      M-A Append          M-B Backup File
    and I dont know how to save it. when I press ^X doesn't save at all.
    Please Help me.
    Thank you in advance.

    Well lets make things easier, get out of Terminal by just Quiting it or Force Quit.
    Download the free TextWrangler here
    http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/download.html
    Now under the File Menu >Open File by Name
    /etc/hosts
    It should look like this, if not then just copy and paste it in.
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1       localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1             localhost
    fe80::1%lo0     localhost
    Now save it and give it your admin password and that's it. Easy as pie.
    Terminal's pico and vi editing programs have a lot to be desired, but serve the basic puposes.
    With Terminal you need to enter
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
    then enter your admin password to access a system file.
    It can only be done via a Admin account, however with TextWrangler not only is it much easier, you can also access system files from a Standard user account.
    the two lines
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
    You have there are "commented out" with the "#" symbol, basically your telling the computer to "ignore this line"
    Why you think messing with your /etc/hosts file is going to solve your primary issue with iTunes/iPad/iPhone is beyond me.
    Did you ever think that perhaps your two devices are too old for the "requested build"?

    I have the corresponding entries in the /etc/hosts file on the machine for these
    host names. The telnet and a standalone java client can resolve these host names
    but not weblogic. Can anybody give some hints to fix this issue? The same code
    and same version of the weblogic work fine on other two machines.
    I have attached the application log file for the exact error messages.
    Many thanks ...

  • Strange lines appearing behind itunes

    I went away for the holidays, and when I got back I booted up my 2006 iMac. Today for the first time, there are strange lines appearing behind iTunes whenever it is open but not the active window. I tried quitting and restarting iTunes, but the lines come back. I wish I could upload a screen shot of what this looks like on my desktop, it's very weird. It does not happen behind any other program window. Only iTunes. The lines appear as if they are extensions of the iTunes window formatting, in line with the side bars, etc. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips for getting it to quit?

    I just wanted to add that I am also seeing the same problem: strange lines around the borders of the iTunes window. The most obvious ones are a set of four vertical lines running parallel to both sides of the iTunes window, although there are other strange bits as well, mostly around the top corners of the window, as well as a single thin horizontal line above the top of the iTunes window. These unusual lines started appearing "out of the blue" sometime in the past few weeks -- as in, not right after an update or any other configuration change to my mac... The only change I can say I did recently was to update to OS 10.6.6, although I know others who are running 10.6.6 and aren't having this issue with iTunes. I also wanted to add that in my case, I only see these strange lines when iTunes is the active window. Further to that, updating to iTunes 10.1.2 does not fix the problem, unfortunately.

  • /etc/hosts site blocking

    In windows and linux I can block sites by adding the domain to /ect/hosts and pointing to loaclhost eg
    127.0.0.1 blockthis.com
    Anyone know how to get this to work in Tiger
    thanks

    Exactly the same in OS X. There is a hosts file located in the /etc/ directory. Open the Terminal application (Utilities folder) and at the prompt enter:
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
    You will be asked to authenticate with your admin password which will not be echoed.
    When the editor opens the files simply enter the sites you wish to block using the format you posted: 127.0.0.1 block.site.com.
    Enter each desired site on a separate line. When finished press CTRL-X. You will be prompted to save changes. Respond "y". You will be prompted again to save the filename, respond "y". Pico will quit. You can verify your changes by entering:
    cat /etc/hosts
    This will list the contents of the hosts file.
    Note that underlying OS X is a Unix operating system, so most anything you know how to do in Linix is done the same way in OS X, except that access must be through the Terminal application.
