[Solved] Strange sound issue

I finally got around to trying out Arch, and I'm having a strange issue with sound. When I try to play videos off the Internet as my normal (non-root) user, the video plays, but no sound comes out of the speakers. If I log in as root and try to play the same video, the sound works perfectly. I have not experienced this on any other distros.
Since I am a strict follower of the "don't run as root" rule, I'd like to know if there are any settings/config files I can check to see what the issue may be.
Additional details:
-Using alsa, it has always worked perfectly for me in the past
-alsamixer works as root
-alsamixer as normal users says:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
-lspci entry for my sound device:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
-I have already seen the Alsa setup page on the wiki and added the blacklist line to modprobe.conf, but there is no "external amplifier" listed in alsamixer
-alsaconf seems non-existent
-I have already tried "modprobe -rv snd-hda-intel && sleep 5 && modprobe snd-hda-intel" as root
EDIT: I have not yet tried playing any local videos or sound files, though I can try this later when I have some extra time.

I am now ;-)
I've got sound now that I am. I'm used to having the distro installer setting up my default account for me. Although I should know to check the groups, since I have had to setup custom users before ;-)
Thanks, 6ng4n.

  • [solved] Strange Audio Issue

I am experiencing a strange audio issue with my Intel-HDA ICH7:
    # lspci -v
00:1b.0 Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 30a5
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
    Memory at d2400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
    Capabilities: <access>
when I installed Arch linux the first time a mounth ago on this computer, I had a sound problem that was solved in a very strange way.
Everything worked fine until a week or so (I believe from Alsa 1.0.12). Now sometimes sound works and sometimes it doesn't. For example sometime I boot the computer and have no sound, then I reboot it without doing anything, and then sound works.
I have tried messing with the modprobe.conf:
    # /etc/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
    # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
    # --- ALSACONF version 1.0.11 ---
    #alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    #alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
    # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
    #options snd-hda-intel model=F1734
    options snd-hda-intel model=z71v
    options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1
but it was useless. If I put back the modules in rc.conf everything is worse: sound doesn't work at all.
A diff between lsmod in a "working boot" and a "without sound boot" showed that the same modules where in kernel memory.
A diff between dmesg showed this difference:
    < hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...
was present in the not working boot. This line is absent in a working boot dmesg.
The only way to make the sound card working everytime is to remove the snd* modules load from the boot sequence and load the modules "by hand" after the login.
    Any ideas?
PS : If something is unclear due to my poor English please tell my and I'll try to explain it better.

phrakture wrote:snd-hda-intel is screwed up - on my thinkpad I had to go into the bios and enable the modem for sound to work.  Oddly enough, the modem was off by default.
Also, mine has no PCM listed, I need to use "front" as my PCM level... not to mention the UI is way off with 'tpb' (if you have a thinkpad)
Yes it's not an Arch Linux related problem: I had problems with Debian (Etch and Sid based distros like ubuntu) too (but there I had no modprobe issue on the init sequence. Maybe is a problem of shared IRQs, but I have to study the existing documentation as I am a newbie). The difference is that Arch is simple enought for me to try something like modprobing "by hand" in the init sequence. PCM seems to work, however the volume is very low and I have found no way to make the mic work. Under Mepis I was able to make it work only if I plugged it in windows xp and then reboot into Linux. But I can't try it with Arch as I have erased the windows partition...
I will try the new kernel, study the documentation and then report. Hoping this will be usefull to others too.

  • Strange sound issue with my Satelite U300

I've got a strange sound problem with my laptop.
I have XP pro + SP3 (downgraded from Vista to XP)
Couple week ago, a reinstall XP, because I thought it could solve my problem. But...nothing.
This is a problem: When I turning my laptop on, it gives me a message, "warning, cannot access volume control". When I check device manager, the only yellow question mark is bout PCI memory controller and there is no more unrecognized devices founded.
In Sound, video and game controller - Realtek High definition Audio is just missing.
Usually , then everything is ok, in "Device manager - Sound, video and game controller " I have - Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio drivers, Legacy Video CApture Devices, Media Control Devices,
Video codecs, Realtek High definition Audio. But then sound is missing, the "Realtek High definition Audio" is also missing.
Computers restart doesn't help. Even, when I uninstall Realtek sound drivers from "Add and remove.." and install it freshly, it also doesn't help. I tried to update drivers - nothing..
But, there is one strange thing: When a turning my laptop on couples hours later, or even next day (for exmpl) everything is ok. Sound works. And I can understand why....
All drivers downloaded from Toshiba. BIOS is being updated.
Maybe somebody know how to solve this problem? Any solutions?

    Hello
This issue has been brought up on this forum several times under other topic headings. Look under Audio Driver Missing, for instance. I have had this exact problem since purchasing my Toshiba notebook more than a year ago. Toshiba tech support is useless - and you're right that BIOS updates or changes make no difference, at least so far. The other ideas or replies given so far on this forum also don't solve the problem. Unfortunately for now I think you have to live with it, until someone spends the time to figure out what is really going on. I am curious if it is a Toshiba problem, a Realtek problem, or a Vista / compatibility issue.
I have two suggestions, which aren't fixes, but can help get your sound back when it disappears:
    1. Restart several times, not just once. Sometimes it works.
    2. Try the System Restore function. This used to work for me, until I updated the BIOS and now it no longer helps with this issue!
Make sure you post a solution if you figure it out!

  • Strange sound issue on iPad2

my mom is having odd sound issues on her iPad 2 that i was able to somewhat fix. and it goes from fixed back to broken o.O
i thought it was interesting and worth mentioning, in case this happens to anyone else.
her iPad 2 is up to date on the latest iOS (5.0.1) and the issue occured while she was watching a video in YouTube. sound is totally off in all apps. in Settings>General under 'use side switch to' it is set to 'mute'. when going to Settings>General>Sounds the volume control for ringers will work and cause the ringtone to play, so it seems the speaker itself is fine. however it will only work there and for that short time. afterward sound will continue to remain off. the volume control on the side of the unit will bring up the on screen speaker icon, except it doesnt show the bar that usually goes up and down with the volume. and sometimes at the top of the grey box it will say 'sound effects'. ive also tried switching the mute on and off which changes nothing.
the one thing ive found that changes anything is the multi tasking bar volume control (double clicking the home button and then sliding all the way to the left, where it shows a screen orientation lock, brightness slider and a volume control bar). now the volume control bar is unfilled and doesnt show the dot that you can slide up and down to change the volume. however when i plug the iPad 2 into a computer (any computer seems to cause this) the volume control bar will suddenly fill and the dot will appear. now suddenly sound works in all apps and will change with the side control again as normal.
now heres where it gets even weirder!!!
sometimes when unplugging the iPad 2, after a short while volume will slowly fade out and be unresponsive again. the side buttons stop working and the volume control in the multi tasking bar will be unfilled and unresponsive. repeatedly plugging it in, going back to the multi tasking bar volume control and unplugging will eventually bring volume back. a couple times ive gotten volume to stay on and the volume bar to stay responsive by unplugging it while im in the multi tasking bar. but sometimes this is not the case.
for the record, ive tried 'turning it off and on again' and resetting all settings and erasing all content and settings (both with starting up from a back up on iCloud and PC, and starting up as a new iPad). ive used two different laptops, one with Windows Vista and one with Windows 7. the iPad is synced with one laptop but aside from using iTunes to back it up and for charging, ive not made any changes to the iPad using these devices. during the entire duration of my attempts to fix it, the iPad has been on no lower than 80% power. ive also called Apple and discussed this with an Apple Care representative. who suggested all the same things id already done, and walked me through all the fixes to make sure i didnt skip anything.
hopefully and most probable is that its just an issue with iOS 5.0.1. i also have an iPad 2 thats up to date with 5.0.1 and ive not had this issue, YET.
i just thought it would be beneficial to the community to share this issue and get word out that this is happening. i would like to hear everyones thoughts on this issue and if this has happened to anyone else. the Apple Representative that i spoke to had not heard of or had to deal with this issue so it sounds like its rather new or rare. though she did mention that this is not normal behavior for the device and might be a software issue.
id like to conclude with my love for Apple, and how user friendly iDevices are in general. ive had iPods from the very first generation and all of them still work (though the older ones cant be updated past a certain iOS). the few issues ive ever had were easily fixed with a visit to the Apple Store or searching on the Apple Support Communities. so as with before, i will remain positive and look forward to a bug fix in the next update.
-thanks in advanced for reading, and any comments

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • [SOLVED] Strange character issue...

I'm using Openbox, and sometimes (often) the text will mess up and start showing random characters in place of the characters that's supposed to be there.  I kill X and start it up again, and it's fixed until it happens again.  It usually happens after doing some package management and other system-related things, but a couple of times it's done it during a session where I didn't do any of those things.  This only happens in X/Openbox.
I figured it was a locale problem, so I checked all of my locale settings multiple times and everything appears correct.  Then I figured it was maybe a key mapping problem, so I checked that KEYMAP was set to us, and it is.
I have en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8 and ja_JP.UTF-8 UTF-8 enabled, and en_US.UTF-8 is my default...I use Terminus as my font for everything.  Any help with this is appreciated since I've spent two days trying to figure it out already and I just want to move on.
Here's an example...Sometimes there'll be huge characters and Japanese kanji thrown in there.

No. Xorg 1.13.04 does not work well with nvidia drivers.
This problem is dealt with in several topics:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153138
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152899
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152837
Only "solution" so far: Downgrading xorg.
1.13.03 might be enough according to user corion's post).
Alright...Thanks for the info.  I guess I was completely wrong in how I was thinking of the problem.  So, am I able to just downgrade the xorg-server package to solve the issue, or am I going to have to downgrade other related packages such as xorg-server-common?

  • Anyone solved the sound issue for UK Sky viewers?

    Hi,
At the moment, I have a Sky STB feeding into the MSI 8606, when I try to use the small audio link cable, the sound is fine for 1 minute or so, then vanishes... I have no screensavers or any scheduled tasks.
The only solution at the moment is to feed a separate sound feed into the Line-in of the sound card.
I believe this is an issue with the way PAL is encoded for use with Sky, and would probably be fine when connected directly to the Aerial.
    Anyone got a solution?
As an aside, I am considering building a linux PVR based on MythTV has anyone got the MSI 8606 to work with this type of installation?
    Thanks

i believe that is the better solution. as long as your recording program (MSIPVS) has the Line-In set as recording source, you shouldn't have any problems

    soundcore               8160  1 snd
However, now is where things start to get strange. In days gone by I used to have, simply, a device node /dev/dsp which was the sound device. I'm pretty sure that my card supports hardware mixing which explains why I only had a single hardware device and not heaps of software ones. But now:
    [owen@oblong ~]$ ls /dev/ | grep dsp
    [owen@oblong ~]$
    [owen@oblong ~]$ ls /dev/snd/
    seq  timer
Where the wiki says: If you have at least the devices controlC0 and pcmC0D0p or similar, then your sound modules have been detected and loaded properly.
And the result of some other commands:
    [owen@oblong ~]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/alsa restart
    Password:
:: Saving ALSA Levels                                                                                                                                    [BUSY] /usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1502: No soundcards found...
                                                                                                                                                             [DONE]
:: Restoring ALSA Levels                                                                                                                                 [BUSY] /usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1608: No soundcards found...
                                                                                                                                                             [FAIL]
    Same for alsamixer:
    [owen@oblong ~]$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
Running alsaconf goes through all the normal steps, detects my card, sets it up etc, but when it tries to restart the alsa service (as above) the same result is had.
    Any ideas? I'm totally stumped.

Moved the soundcard to another PCI slot and it's working perfectly now. How annoying.

  • Strange Sound Issue Since 10.5.6

    Hey everyone,
This thread here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1454444&tstart=1) has the same problem...but I don't believe my sound card is busted, as I hear the gong/chime sound when turning on my Powerbook.
    In summary:
When I hit the volume buttons on the keyboard (F3, F4, F5) the sound control icon shows up on the screen, with all the boxes white (indicating full volume), but beneath them is a "not allowed" icon - circle with a diagonal line through it, like Ghostbusters without the ghost. I can't click on anything in Sound Preferences (sound volume shows at full, and I can't click on the sound bar or the mute button).
Any suggestions would be helpful! It seems like this has started ever since I updated to 10.5.6, and I don't really know how to roll my machine back as this is my first Mac.
    Thanks everyone!

Odd. I have had the exact problem described on Feb. 10: no sound output or input device detected, controls disabled, but volume sliders at "full" and everything grayed out. I restarted my computer, hoping it was just a glitch, but it didn't help.
This discussion prompted me to check my keyboard backlight keys, where I discovered that they were also disabled. Followed the Audio MIDI setup link, but the setup assistant could not detect audio in or out devices, so I couldn't set anything.
Here's where it gets interesting (to me): the support article got me thinking about AU stuff (audio units) used by 3rd party software. I had recently moved (not deleted, fortunately) the Finale GPO folder from its default location. I had planned to delete it after making sure it wasn't needed by anything. On a hunch, I found the folder and put it back where it is supposed to be. Restarted, and HEY, my sound and keyboard backlight controls work again.
    Weird.
I guess I need that GPO folder after all. Now, if I can figure out why Garage Band thinks the GPO serial number is incorrect...but that's off-topic.

I have had this happen in the past but was unsure which package was the culprit.  I don't know from the above list which package update may have been responsible, but since the same effect has been seen on 4 different machines I presume it is likely kdebase-workspace?  This is with KDE as the desktop environment, and with all packages up to date.  Has anyone else seen this issue and if so is there a workaround or is it a known bug.  It is an odd one to google for but presumably I am not the only one who has seen this issue.  The version of chrome is chrome stable google-chrome 36.0.1985.125-1
    Thanks.

I have no idea what the root cause is but if you turn off compositing (Alt+Shift+F12), it'll stop. You can use the Window Rules KCM to make a rule that'll automatically stop/start compositing when Chromium is started. Sadly, this is a poor workaround as you lose all the niceties that compositing brings You can also change KWin's render mode from OpenGL to Raster but that's too intrusive for me - I'd rather just disable compositing as a whole. I'm using a laptop with an HD4000 set to use the default SNA acceleration.

  • [Solved]Strange piping issue..

Sometimes when I try piping commands, I simply get a "command not found" even though the commands are correct for sure.
The commands will work when I remove the space after the pipe... It's really annoying and it has happened to me on different distributions, so it's not just Arch. I managed to get a fantastic example just now and this time I thought to myself "This time, I'll HAVE to figure this out!!!"
So, see this example below. I even got an error message, which I think hasn't happened before.
    ~$ man bash | wc -l
    4892
    ~$ man mplayer | wc -l
    bash: wc: command not found
Error executing formatting or display command.
    System command (cd "/usr/share/man" && (echo ".pl 11i"; /bin/cat '/usr/share/man/man1/mplayer.1') | /usr/bin/gtbl | /usr/bin/nroff -mandoc -c | /bin/less -is) exited with status 36096.
    No manual entry for mplayer
    ~$ man mplayer |wc -l
    8086
So, what's this? It isn't a simple one-time issue, if I try to repeat the command it fails every time but when I remove the space it works. I don't know if the error message is related to this issue though, because this is the first time it has shown itself, even though I've stumbled across this issue many times.

  • Help! red light from headphone jack and strange sound issues!

Help! I use my baby for listening to music and watching DVDs almost constantly when I'm working, and just the other day it started doing something really odd whenever I start doing something that involves sound!
If I'm listening to a song, watching a DVD, playing a game, whatever, as long as it involves sound it does this. What happens is, it'll be fine for up to a minute, and then it starts making this staticky skipping noise and losing the tracking on whatever it is I'm doing (game, song, DVD, etc.). This happens whether I've got headphones or speakers plugged in, or I'm using the laptop speakers. Also, a red light flashes from INSIDE the headphone jack with every staticky noise.
Everything else works fine. The problem doesn't appear as long as I'm not doing anything using sound, and it goes away about a minute after I stop using sound when it appears. It just started doing this yesterday, which was an entirely uneventful day and no different from normal. I traveled, but the laptop stayed in its case the whole time and didn't get dropped or jostled or anything.
I depend on my music to keep me sane! I can use my iPod for now, but I've got finals coming up and I need to use music while I study! HELP!

if the red light is flashing at the output, it means that the computer is trying to output a digital optical signal.. which would explain why your audio is cutting in and out, cos it's flipping randomly between digital out and built in speaker, which means the speaker is being intermittently muted.
the reason for this is that the sensor in your audio output port is dodgy. this sensor is supposed to detect when you have a digital optical cable connected, and yours seems to just be going a bit nuts. fraid the only way to get it properly sorted is to take it in for a service.

  • [SOLVED] Strange graphical issues in Chromium

I haven't tested this in any other browsers, so I'm not sure what the root cause of the problem is.
    Symptom: http://i.imgur.com/88ek7BU.png
It only happens sometimes, but images (and sometimes links etc) are mangled like this ad. For links, it's sometimes possible to mouse over it and fix it (it gets a refresh when it has to draw the underline or something, I guess), but this ad was not fixable (not that I cared about seeing an ad, but the issue as a whole is quite irritating).
Are there plugins which improve image rendering and fix this? Is it a driver issue? What can I do and/or what info do you need from me so that this issue is resolved?

I get things like that too.
What environment are you using? (OpenBox, Kde, i3, Gnome?)
What is your video hardware / Driver.   I see these on Intel Graphics.
Are you using a compositor?  Which one? I seemed to see this more with xcompmgr than I do with Compton.  I seem to see this more with OpenBox and less with i3
Edit:  Also, have you messed with any of the rendering flags in Chromium, or are you using the default settings.  Do not force hardware rendering.  You might also (as an experiment) tell Chrome not to do hardware rendering.

  • Intermittent Sound Issues - HP Pavillion dv6700 Entertainment Laptop

    Hi,
I have a HP Pavillion dv6700 Entertainment Laptop running Windows Vista 32bit Home Premium and have been running into some strange sound issues first.
First, on occassion when I start my laptop I will get a "No Audio Output Device Installed" Message, and no sound controllers show up in the device manager.  Strangely, sometimes if I restart the laptop or put it into hibernation and bring it back, the output device will again work.
Also, when it is working I am experiencing other strange issues.  Often, sound will work only through headphones, and not through the built in Altec Lansing speakers.  Other times, even with the headphones plugged in, I only get sound through the speakers.  And sometimes, no sound through either, even though the computer at this point is showing a working audio device.
Lastly, when the sound does work through the speakers, it is normally crackling and distorted - it doesn't sound right at all.
The sound device installed on the computer is Contextant Smart Audio 221 (At least when it chooses to be working...)
I hope there is a solution to this problem, thank you very much for any support!

I also have a HP Pavillion laptop, with Windows Vista..  I am having sound issues, but not the same ones..  mine often displays the volume bar on the screen, clicking like I'm turning it up or down.. I can't get it to stop or go away.. I usually have to reboot and most of the time it stops, until the next time I open the laptop.  Also, when it's not doing this, I can't control my volume from the touch pad volume control at the top of my keyboard.  I thought maybe it was just damaged because it seems to have some scratches in that area where the top connects when closed, but I didn't think it made sense that rebooting will stop this, even temporarily.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, however, one driver didn't come back.. it actually seemed to be better at first, but now I have to reboot it almost everytime I open it.  I thought if I didn't leave it in hibernation, just turn it off, while not using it, that would help, it didn't.  I have also tried updating the drivers and they are updated.. If anyone knows what else I can do, please help, it's terribly annoying, plus I have a lot of music on it, I'd like to listen to it sometime.

  • Strange sound problems with Terminal

I've been having a strange sound issue for a couple months now that's driving me insane. What seems to happen is that when I launch/close Terminal the sound volume seems to change. It usually increases, but sometimes the output device toggles to the internal speaker. It's very strange, very frustrating, and very reproducible.
I have reset PRAM, done an SMC reset, cleared every cache I can think of, reset preferences on Terminal, checked bash-related (profile, bashrc, etc) and nothing seems to help. It does appear that it's iTunes specific - the volume of DVD player doesn't change when I use terminal in a similar way. If I remember correctly, I had the problem before my Leopard upgrade as well. I have the MS intellitype/intellipoint utilities installed for my keyboard/mouse, although I don't know if that matters.
Any idea what could be causing this?
    thanks!

  • [SOLVED] Crackling/distortion sound issues with Skype

Recently pulseaudio was updated version 5.0 this finally fixed my KDE issues where KDE would switch inputs after every login. But now I have a crackling sound issue in Skype but only on my end off the connection. The one I'm talking to sounds fine but he hears me all the distorted and crackling. I tried the Skype Test Call system and there I sound fine no crackling issues or distortions. Anyone else have issues like that currently or know that could be?
