[SOLVED] Stuck in fresh install: problems after succesfull glibc upgra

Hello everyone. I am stuck in the installation after upgrading glibc.
I am installing from the Core Image ISO.
As it says in the Developer Wiki the first thing I did after installing the system is:
$ pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
In that moment appaered some errors related to tzselect and 2 other files which I dont remember but I deleted them and then it let me install.
By doing that it let me upgrade pacman, so I upgraded pacman and created de signature database as it should be.
Then I did a 'pacman -S filesystem --force' and 'rm /etc/profile.d/locale.sh' to solve future known errors related to system upgrade and rebooted.
In that moment everything was OK, but then I tried 'pacman -Syu'
Here's where I am stuck. Pacman says that /lib still exists on the filesystem.
As it says on the developer wiki i tried 'find /lib -exec pacman -Qo -- {} +' to find out which packages where owing /lib and the list it displayed was HUGE, really...
I removed the /lib/modules/3.0-ARCH since no other files where in that folder and tried again 'pacman -Syu' but keep getting the '/lib exists on filesystem' error.
What should I do to solve this??
The list of files in /lib is this:

It seems that deleting the folder inside /lib/modules broke something since the system was quite unstable after rebooting...
Whatever, I'm sorry I can't continue to solve my last situation.
I have just made a new install and followed the instructions at Allan McRae's blog.
pacman -Sy
rm -rf /var/run /var/lock && pacman -Sf filesystem
pacman -S tzdata
pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
rm /etc/profile.d/locale.sh
pacman -Su --ignore glibc
pacman -Su
I'm quite near the success, now I'm stuck at generating the signature database.
Before the last 'pacman -Su' I'm forced to create the trusted signature database by pacman, when I run 'pacman-key --init' it seems to hang, I left it there generating the database for about half an hour in my first atempt and about an hour in my second atempt and it never finished. But in my previous installation (2 hours ago) it was done in 5 minutes.
Is there another way to generate the signature database? or anyone knows what is happening? Thank you.

This is a Steam-runtime issue. It has already been reported upstream, and a fix has already been proposed. The issue is slated to be fixed in the next release (no date given). Having said that, you can still run it without issue by passing STEAM_RUNTIME=0 first. That is to say:
    $ STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
I am not sure if there are any negative ramifications to running it this way, but I have yet to have any problems.

Also, I was under the impression that the dependencies for the packages I had to install were now shipped with Steam? Which is why they were removed from the dependency list when it was in the AUR.

  • [solved - faulty hardware]nvidia - serious problems after last update

I'm trying to fix this for 3 days now...
After last nvidia update i rebooted and my screen looked like this:
    http://img3.imagebanana.com/img/qogzxehj/img_1702.jpg
So I googled a bit, tried to create a new xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig, tried several things in xorg.conf but nothing worked. A downgrade to previous version failed. I was fed up with it and restored a backup from the week before and.....got also this messed up screen.
I even get some strange stripes/distortion in BIOS splash screen now or when I boot from a live-cd:
    http://img3.imagebanana.com/img/29u0495s/img_1698.jpg
Next day I added a "Mode Section" to xorg.conf and everything seemed to work again - until the screen turned off because of inactivity (no suspend or hibernate), I moved the mouse and everything was f**** up again.
As things are now: I have this strange distortion in my BIOS-bootscreen. When X starts this messed up screen from the screenshot appears. I can switch to a console. If I switch to runlevel 3 and immediately back to runlevel 5 I get an apparently working desktop. But the windows don't redraw, the program windows won't refresh if I move them around. Everything looks strange and so on.
I played around with xorg.conf, loaded some Modules, tried several depths and resolutions, added a modeline, nothing. Reinstalled nvidia in runlevel 3, tried the nv-driver (brought up black screen with some red pixels, system only reacted on magic sysrequest..). Vesa driver works (resolution 800x600)...I also wanted to boot from 2 Knoppix CD's floating around here but they both came up with a black screen, at the other hand a Clonezilla live-cd is working (with 800x600 and 1024x768 and this distorted pixels, see second screenshot from above).
Is it possible that my VGA Bios is corrupted or something? I suppose this because of the distortion in the boot screen...A guy in the german archforum gave me the advice to look if
    dmesg | grep -e mtrr -e MTRR
produces any output - it does not.

Ok, recently the exact same thing happen to me and my 6800.
These were the kernel's last words before everything froze hard. From everything.log,
    NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 13, 0001 00000000 0000502d 0000060c 00000083 00000100

Googling that, I stumbled upon this and I though jackpot!
    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=123912
There seems to be a known problem all the way back to the start of 180.51 driver series. But the weird thing is the previous version(180.44) had no problems whatsoever.
Also, my logs never showed this other error they were clamouring about...
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
[mi] mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping.
Adamant that a hardware failure at this point is too coincidental, I attempted first installing nvidia-beta and nvidia-utils-beta from aur as suggested by the post. Then, I tried downgrading the to the previous nvidia. Then, the previous kernel. The same thing keeps happening albeit with weird frequencies. There were times when it could last well over 5 hours, even on wesnoth. However, the thing that usually broke it is firefox loading with the usual 150+ tabs. This puzzled me even more. The graphic card isn't even related to this. Maybe its ram? Went on ram swapping spree again to no avail.
A couple of reboots later, weird graphical distortions appeared right after BIOS. Then it really hit upon me that this had to be a hardware problem! It was only when I fiddled desperately with the bios settings when I noticed that my Northbridge/chipset fan is spinning at 0rpm! Opened up the case and sure enough, its dead. I hacked and replaced it from my old AMD cpu's fan. Funny, my intel CPU fan just died a while back. Replaced it with the chasis fan. Can't be bothered to shop for these.....
Still, I booted up, thinking the bug will still be there since the chipset supposedly has nothing to do with graphics problem. To my surprise, it's totally gone! Elated yet puzzled, I sought out trying to rationalize the whole event. Afterall, it's only through understanding these that one is able to troubleshoot effectively. A quick search on google on the northbridge yields the answer. In fact, the northbridge does have something to do with the graphic card. It acts as an interface for high speed devices. No wonder firefox caused it to crash too!
    Lessons learnt
If the frequency of crashes seems too random, consider that it might be a hardware overheat failure. This can easily explain why "the next morning everything works fine".
If weird stuff happens outside of the OS, eg. while rebooting, it's most likely is a hardware failure.
should be a big coincidence if the card dies because of heat problems in the second I updated?
It really isn't such a big coincidence. This depends on the frequency of your updates. Most people update every week or even every few days.

  • OS install problem after new HD install

I very proudly installed a new 250g HD in my crashed mac mini A1176 ( I did not have anything backed up). After startup I got the ?. I put an install disk from macbook and restarted.I got to the installation stage and It said I couldn't install that software. I then partitioned and formatted the new HD (per forum posts) but still could not install OS. For some reason I also could not eject the disk. I tried all the tips and eventually opened it up and took out disk.
Next I tried to start up with Black OSX Tiger install disk- it won't show up. stuck on ? disk. And now I still can't eject that disk either.
Any ideas? Did I do something wrong on HD install? How can I get this working again?

First, do you have the original disks that came with the Mini? You stated that you tried "black" Tiger disks. Depending on your Mini's version, it could have shipped with 10.3.7, 10.4, 10.4.2, 10.4.5, 10.4.6, 10.4.7, 10.4.8, 10.4.10, 10.5 or 10.5.6
Let's say your Mini shipped running 10.4.5; Black Tiger 10.4.0 could not be used for the install.
Download and take a look at the Mini section of Mactracker http://mactracker.dreamhosters.com/ for all Mini information.

  • Erase and Install problems after fixing 10.4.5 update issues

Initially, I had permission issues after upgrading to 10.4.5. After hours of reconfiguring user accounts, I thought that maybe the best overall solution would be to erase and reinstall Tiger. I am an old PC user so reformatting the hard drive can be a logical answer.
I backed up all of files and ran disk utility and erased with the "0s" option. I am using my install disc of 10.4.2. I have tried several start modes, single-user, C, Option, verbose and still run into the same problem. The installation does not go beyond verifying the drive to install it on. I have tried some steps in the disk utility.
I know that there is probably a command line to get the installation disc to recognize the hard drive but I am not experienced in Unix commands.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am in an endless circle of starting, quitting, and restarting the installation just to get to Disk Utility. So far I have not had any problems with Macs or with Tiger. I am a Mac convert.
    Thank you very much.

Don't know what exactly fixed it, but a few weeks down the line and several random updates later (10.4.4, Quicktime, various apps) I tried the speakers again and they are working fine - the system recognises them, alerts work fine etc.

  • Creative Cloud install problems after system restore on Window 7

I can not reinstall my apps with the application manager because it says they are already installed.  The directories they were installed in are deleted.  How do I reinstall.  I have reinstalled Application manager.

It seems that AAM and CS 6 apps were not removed properly.
In order to remove them completely follow this : http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
After running cleaner tool , goto creative.adobe.com website and then try installing applications again.
Hopefully this time it should work !!

From what I can see it looks like they are files from a previous xf86-video-ati installation, although I've no idea why they would be there since I removed it cleanly. I was thinking perhaps I should just force the install?

  • Solved Bluetooth cell phone pairing problem after 10.4.8 update

I am not sure why it works this way,but I tested it a few times and it was consistant.First I updated to version 10.4.8 . The 3 motorola razor phones I have were not able to pair anymore at all.Under 10.4.7 file transfers were no problem and pairing always occured.I use the d-link dbt 120 bluetooth adapter and until now (with 10.4.8) communication was never a problem when the adapter was attached to my belkin hub where it has a docking area for flash drives and mp3 players etc... .
When I now try to use the adapter on the usb hub it doesn't work now at all.I get messages that communication is not possible etc... . When I put the adapter on the one usb port on the front of my powermac g5 then I get very quick pairing ,file transfers etc... . I moved the bluetooth adapter back and fourth between the hub and the front of the computer and the result was always the same. The port on the mac works and others don't anymore.
The other ports on the usb hub worked fine with 10.4.7 but not with 10.4.8. It seems like the hub fell from grace or something with the new update. I felt better when I could get it to work. I wish I would have found this out before I did the archive and install though to go back to 10.4.7 .
I reupgraded to 10.4.8 then found the solution to my problem maybe 10 minutes away from a second archive and install to take me back to 10.4.7.

    Hi Ralph,
Thanks for your response! Unfortunately I am enough of a newbie not to understand the implication of what you said Where should I look for these devices, and are they conflicting with iChat somehow? Do you mind telling me what action to take to fix this?
In the meantime I did a 10.4.9 update and airport stopped working completely. I talked to Apple support and they had me do a factory reset on my airport extreme basestation and reconfigure it in order to get to work again, and I have not tried video iChat since that happened.
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] Nvidia problems after fixing glibc borkgasm... [SOLVED]

First -- Yes, I was an idiot and borked my system. I had been on vacation for a week and came to a mile long list of updates. I also went ahead and ran everything without looking for any relevant news bits on the home page.
Second -- I'm mostly certain that I've gotten that all straightened out.
However -- Ever since nothing installed from the nvidia-utils package will run.
    hal@oa ~ > nvidia-settings
bash: /usr/bin/nvidia-settings: No such file or directory
    hal@oa ~ > file /usr/bin/nvidia-settings
/usr/bin/nvidia-settings: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.4.0, stripped
    hal@oa ~ > uname -m
    x86_64
it does however work if i use
    $ /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 /usr/bin/nvidia-settings
    Andy ideas?
    [SOLUTION]
I swear I had done it again already after fixing the /lib symlink, but for s/gs I ran one more pacman -Sy glibc lib32-glibc, and it seems to have gone through this time.
Pacman REALLY needs some form of news alert to let you know about updates like that. Nothing obtrusive, just a nice little reminder to check the homepage for notices. It would save me a _LOT_ of money on asprin.

    --Fixed the name.
--And that's the first thing I did. After running pacman -Rdd on anything nvidia, I ran pacman -Sy on everything removed. After that didn't fix it I came looking here, where I found the bit about the linker. It was frustrating as hell, I kept getting back "File or directory not found" but ls showed it right there.

  • [Solved] KDE 4.10-1 problems after update

    Hi,
Yesterday I updated my system with pacman -Syu and all of the KDE packages were upgraded to 4.10.1-1 and now I'm having some weird problems.. KDE logs in but the window decorations are gone(some applications start but I can't move them while others dont even start e.g dolphin, system settings) and systemd-journald goes to 100% cpu usage. It seems that kwin is not loaded and when I try to start it from the terminal I get a segmentation fault error.
My last update was 1-2 weeks ago and everything was ok.
I've already tried deleting the ~/.kde4 folder and while my themes etc are back to default the problem remains.
Also I reinstalled KDE but that didn't do anything as well.
If I login with Openbox everything works fine.
Any ideas what the problem might be?
Last edited by spiros (2013-03-10 20:20:48)

I've tried to start kwin manually but then I get this:
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Anybody got any idea what's going on?

  • Nvidia Driver install problem after new kernel

i recentyl updated my kernel to 2.4.22 and added bootsplash support.. that works perfectly and the kernel works good.. except i have to rei stgall the nvidia driver.. but it gives me an errror that it cannot find kernel header file sources.. i made the package in /usr/abs/kernels/kernel did makepkg.. it made it find and it has a pkg/src directory.. i copied the src of the kernel to /usr/src/linux so theres /usr/src/linux/2.4.22 but it still will not work and cannot make the module and load it.. still gives methat i tcannot find kernel header files... any help would be great
    -bolero

well you should have the headers if you used makepkg to rebuild your kernel as part of the pacakge creates a /usr/src/linux directory that holds all necessary headers.
if you did not use makepkg to build you kernel then you obviously did not create a /usr/src/linux directory (you do this by untarring the kernel source in /usr/src than symlinking the untarred source directory (linux-2.4.22 in your case) to linux (ln -s linux-2.4.22 linux).

  • Problems after removing glibc-* RedHat EL5

ohh, I thinh I have done something wrong.
I did make a update from glibc-2.5-18 to ver glibc-2.5-34 but still got database restarting so I decided to remove glibc-2.5-34 for installing glibc-2.5-24.
    I execute command:
    root@DB1 ~# rpm -e nodeps allmatches glibc-2.5-34
    warning: /etc/localtime saved as /etc/localtime.rpmsave
Invalid link from "ld-linux.so.2" to "/lib/ld-lsb.so.3": No such file or directory
error: %postun(glibc-2.5-34.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 255
Now I can not do anything! I totally messed up in server :(
    root@DB1 ~# yum install glibc-*
bash: /usr/bin/yum: /usr/bin/python: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
Somebody can me to fix that?

Ok, Matosh. Everything is now clear.
Note however that if you don't have a static rpm binary executable on your CD, you cannot do anything. Because when booting in rescue mode, rpm from the 1st installation CD is in memory, but it works only before you `chroot /mnt/sysimage', and at this "raw stage" (no environment) you cannot install anything with that rpm, unless the package is relocatable and can be relocated to the /mnt/sysimage/usr, instead of /usr that doesn't exist and its creation doesn't solve anything. But I doubt that glibc is relocatable. On the other side, after chroot, you cannot run that rpm from memory anymore. You depend on your root environment which is damaged. So, do exactly the following:
    1. Find somewhere statically linked rpm executable and save/burn it on a CD. I can recall that Mandrake distribution used to have such a binary named rpmb, or rpmbig, rpmstatic or so. Let's say that you found out it and have it on CD under name `rpmstatic'.
    2. Boot the system with the 1st installation CD and type `linux rescue'. Choose the language and keyboard, on the Setup Networking screen press No, on the Rescue screen press Continue. If this succeeded, the final Rescue screen will appear showing that the system has been mounted under /mnt/sysimage. Press OK to get a shell. Open a new shell console by Ctrl-Alt-F2.
    3. Insert the CD with static rpm into a free CD/DVD drive. If you have only one, remove the install CD. If it is mounted, just unmount it by `umount /dev/hda'. It can be hda, hdb, sda, sdb or so. You must know that. Let's say it is /dev/hda. Then issue the folowing commands in this order
    # mkdir /temporary
    # mount -t iso9660 /dev/hda /temporary
    # cp /temporary/rpmstatic /mnt/sysimage/bin/rpmstatic
    # chroot /mnt/sysimage
    # /bin/rpmstatic -ivh <path_to_glibc_package.rpm> /* you said you had it on HDD */4. Type `exit' and then `umount /temporary'
    5. Remove CD and restart the system: Ctrl-Alt-Del
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac OS 10.4 Install Stops After First Disc

I'm trying to do a fresh install of mac os 10.4 on my mac mini g4. I restarted the computer with Disc 1 and booted up while holding C. I went under options and chose to do a fresh install. After it checked disc 1 the install began. After it finished with disc 1, it restarted and then it gave me the message, "Please insert the 'Mac OS X Install Disc 2' disc to continue installation. (You have chosen to install software that requires this disc)."
This is where the problem is, I insert Disc 2 and after about 10 seconds, it spits it back out. Nothing on the screen changes.
I've tried restarting it, inserting disc 1 again, restarting the installation process, and restarting while holding C with disc 2 in. None have gotten me past that message.
The discs I am using are the ones that came with the Mac Mini (two gray discs).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, That second Disk thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.
