[SOLVED] Stuck in MATE without terminal

Hi all!
I recently installed Arch on a computer of mine, and also installed the MATE desktop environment and SLiM display manager. My problem is that I now log into the display manager at start up, and without a terminal I cannot do anything - I cannot connect to the Internet, I cannot install new software, I cannot even open plain text files because there is apparently nothing in MATE that can handle them. When I log out of MATE, the display manager pops up; I do not know how to get back to the terminal, and I cannot find a terminal program anywhere in MATE.
What do you think I should do?

Do you have a menu you can open? I know nothing about MARE, but there should be a way to launch applications like MATE Terminal.
There are a few menus, yes, but the only applications in it are an image viewer, some administrative tools, and Firefox, which I installed myself. I think this is because I didn't install the extra tools for MATE before I did all of this.

I tried doing this; I ended up with a blank screen. I remember this happening before I used the display manager when I tried to log out of MATE.

  • How to reload embedded oc4j in JDeveloper without terminating it?

    To the experienced:
    Using JDeveloper (10.1.3.4), when I need to see the effect of my changes in the application code (in the backing beans), the only way I know is to terminate the embedded oc4j by clicking the red square button (or Run > Terminate > Embedded OC4J Server), and then run a .jspx page to restart the oc4j. All these steps are just for the changes in the code to be loaded into the oc4j.
    That is a bit too cumbersome because such reloading is frequent. To test the changed application I need to use an outside page that sends a request to that .jspx page, with some information that the .jspx page needs. That won't work because the oc4j has been terminated. So I have to Run that .jspx page inside JDeveloper just to start the oc4j, knowing that this will spill error in the browser window because the information from the outside page is missing.
    Is there a way to have the application in the running oc4j updated without terminating and restarting the oc4j?
    Thanks for helping!
    Newman

    It kind of depends on the type of changes you did - some changes can be picked up automatically just by saving the new file and reloading in the browser.
    In any case you don't need to first stop the server and then run, you can just hit the run button again and JDeveloper will re-deploy your new page.
    You can have the HTML file be part of your project and run it from inside JDeveloper - this will also re-deploy your new JSPX.

    I have somehow managed to uninstall all my terminal emulators.When I try to run xterm from the applications menu in mate I get

    . Also, if I try to use a tty using 'Ctrl + Alt + F1' etc all I get is a blank screen.
    So, I would like to know if there is a way to install xterm again.

  • FileVault Decryption stuck at 100% in Terminal

    I'm having a problem with decrypting in recovery mode using command line. I have setup an institutional recovery and have successfully encrypted the hard drive on my Mac. I am testing unlocking and decrypting the hard drive with the institutional recovery key I setup which works, up until the final decyrption. I reboot into recovery (command+R), open terminal and I can successfully unlock the encrypted hard drive with the recovery key giving me access to its contents. I then decrypt the hard drive with the recovery key using the following command: diskutil corestorage revert <UUID> -recoveryKeychain /path/to/FileVaultMaster.keychain
    The decryption successfully starts and I use diskutil corestorage list to show the status of the decryption. The progress in the Logical Volume section continues going up until it reaches 100% and it appears to stay stuck there at 100%, even after leaving it over night. In the Logical Volume Family section, the conversion status still shows "Converting" and the conversion direction still shows "backward" even though under Logical Volume, it shows "Conversion progress: 100%" Why does the conversions status never change to complete?
    Should I have used the decryptVolume command instead, like so: diskutil corestorage decryptVolume <UUID> -recoveryKeychain /path/to/FileVaultMaster.keychain
    What is the difference between the revert command and decryptVolume command?
    I'm running 10.9.4 Mavericks and have reproduced the problem on both a Macbook Pro and an iMac.

  • [Solved] Can't type ~ in terminal using AwesomeWM

    I'm running Arch on a System76 Pangolin Performance (panp9 model) laptop. I'm using AwesomeWM, and I can't type the tilde character in any of the terminal apps I have installed. RXVT-Unicode is no go. Xterm is no go. MATE Terminal is no go. I can type backticks without any difficulty, but if I hold down shift and press the same key in a terminal, I get nothing.
    The weird part is that I can run xev, bang on the tilde key, and see a response every time. I can type tildes in Sublime Text 3 and GVim. I can even type a tilde into Opera, LibreOffice, and the GIMP's text tool.
    I've tried googling this, but I haven't found anything. I use the Source Code Pro font in my terminals, but I use the exact same font in Sublime Text 3 and GVim. I haven't seen anything in the Arch or AwesomeWM wikis, either. Does anybody have any pointers?

  • Show Unix messages without Terminal?

    Hi,
    is there a way to display Unix messages that are usually displayed only in Terminal (while it's open) graphically? As a message box, or in some other way that a logged-in user can see without having the Terminal open?
    To be clear, I'm talking about the kind of broadcast message that can be sent to all local users using the wall command.
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the suggestion. The problem I'm trying to solve is that I have a UPS that supplies multiple computers. The UPS has an Ethernet interface to communicate with the computers, i.e. transmit log data, events and alarms, trigger shutdown etc.
    The software that runs on the computers can only display the messages that it receives from the UPS as Unix broadcasts, which appear only in the terminal. Alternatively, it can run a command script.
    I've installed growl, and while it does not (AFAIK) display Unix broadcast messages, I can create scripts (one per event message) that use growlnotify and let the UPS software call them. Which, apart from having to create the scripts, seems like an elegant solution.

  • [SOLVED] Stuck in fresh install: problems after succesfull glibc upgra

    Hello everyone. I am stuck in the installation after upgrading glibc.
    I am installing from the Core Image ISO.
    As it says in the Developer Wiki the first thing I did after installing the system is:
    $ pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
    In that moment appaered some errors related to tzselect and 2 other files which I dont remember but I deleted them and then it let me install.
    By doing that it let me upgrade pacman, so I upgraded pacman and created de signature database as it should be.
    Then I did a 'pacman -S filesystem --force' and 'rm /etc/profile.d/locale.sh' to solve future known errors related to system upgrade and rebooted.
    In that moment everything was OK, but then I tried 'pacman -Syu'
    Here's where I am stuck. Pacman says that /lib still exists on the filesystem.
    As it says on the developer wiki i tried 'find /lib -exec pacman -Qo -- {} +' to find out which packages where owing /lib and the list it displayed was HUGE, really...
    I removed the /lib/modules/3.0-ARCH since no other files where in that folder and tried again 'pacman -Syu' but keep getting the '/lib exists on filesystem' error.

    It seems that deleting the folder inside /lib/modules broke something since the system was quite unstable after rebooting...
    Whatever, I'm sorry I can't continue to solve my last situation.
    I have just made a new install and followed the instructions at Allan McRae's blog.
    pacman -Sy
    rm -rf /var/run /var/lock && pacman -Sf filesystem
    pacman -S tzdata
    pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
    rm /etc/profile.d/locale.sh
    pacman -Su --ignore glibc
    pacman -Su
    I'm quite near the success, now I'm stuck at generating the signature database.
    Before the last 'pacman -Su' I'm forced to create the trusted signature database by pacman, when I run 'pacman-key --init' it seems to hang, I left it there generating the database for about half an hour in my first atempt and about an hour in my second atempt and it never finished. But in my previous installation (2 hours ago) it was done in 5 minutes.
    Is there another way to generate the signature database? or anyone knows what is happening? Thank you.

  • Path (/) file hierarchy navigation without terminal

    Hey,
    I'm interested in navigating finder files with old-fashioned terminal-like "cd" navigation (like "/hd/users/username/docs/",
    but to then have the files actually open in Aqua GUI apps. Does such a method via pre-existing mac system software or 3rd-party application exist?
    Thanks a ton. This has been something I'd just been wanting to tinker with for awhile to avoid the clutter of many open finder windows.
    Thanks again.

    You can also do it in Terminal. Open Terminal and type 'man open' without the quotes. It will tell you how to use the open command.

  • [SOLVED] Arch boots only in terminal mode, KDE doesen't start

    Hi.
    I would like to ask for your help. I don't know what happened, by KDE doesen't want to start. Arch starts only in text mode - terminal mode. I normally booted my Arch system, saw that on KDE taskbar there aren't any of my added launchers. I though that something is wrong, so i accidentally put hibernation, while in fact, i wanted to do a reboot. After that, i presset reset button, and after reboot my Arch starts only in text mode, terminal mode.
    I've been looking for fix, i found that it is maybe related to .xinitrc. Solution over the net and wiki was to copy default from /etc/skel but on my Arch in /etc/skel there aren't any examples of .xinitrc, only 3 files named bash (if i recall it correctly, named bash_profile or something like it).
    Don't know how to fix it. Could you help me? It there is a need to post some logs, tell my which one.
    When i try to startx logged as a user i see: command not found. The same thing shows logged as a root. There is somethig also - as a root i cannot delete /var/db/sudo/firekage/tty1. When i try to start kde.services with systemctl enable kde.services or systemctl start kde.services i see that sudo cannot read from /var/db/sudo/firekage/tty1 or tty2 or tty3 (if i switch terminals).
    I really would like to save my Arch from formatting. Is there a fix? I'm not much experienced with it, tried to learn, read as much as i could but i cannot find answer for it. Don't know why KDE doesen't start at all.

    I booted liveusb Arch system. I deleted my corrupted fstab, reinstalled grub, reconfigured mkinitcpio, generated fstab (deleting the old one, it found my / and added swap partirion), generated grub-mkconfig, rebooted and my / is rw, my KDE shows up, my KDM is woring and i didn't have to format Arch. I have everything that i installed.
    There is only one problem that shows: with sudo i can't run kate in terminal. I will try to found solution for it.

    BTW - i have now, when updating grub, info that some lines are wrong. I have the same warning on all of my Linux systems (Arch, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Slackware), and it all started after installation of vbox. I think that it is related to this because i didn't have errors while updating grub without virtualbox, i installed it yesterday and now i have errors - the same on all distros with virtualbox.

    I'm using openbox as WM. I think it is openbox that causes the trouble
    it seems that when I try ot execute some console application without console but the application needs user input, the problem occurs.
    when the issue arises, gui programs gets killed, leaving its window blank.
    not all of gui programs though, chromium and conky got closed but xterm didn't.
    however, they survive when they are executed with xterm.
    I could reproduce the problem with sudo or alsamixer, run by either right-click menu or gmrun.
    Is there anyone experiencing the same issue?
    sorry for my english.
    Last edited by freaxtux (2012-08-25 03:05:17)

    If you are trying to run a console or terminal application that needs user input, it must be run in a terminal window.  For example, to run alsamixer from the openbox menu I would have this in my ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml:
    <item label="Alsamixer">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>xterm -e alsamixer</execute>
    </action>
    </item>
    The command on the line with "<execute>" opens an xterm window and then the '-e' option tells xterm to run the next command on that line.
    Urxvt also uses the '-e' option to run commands.  To get htop to run from the open box menu in a urxvt window, I would use this:
    <item label="Htop">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>urxvt -e htop</execute>
    </action>
    </item>
    For gmrun, I believe you use Ctrl-Enter to have it open an app in a terminal.  At least that is what the wiki page says: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gmrun

    i want to write a wrapper script for virtualbox to load the modules when virtualbox starts and unload them when it exits.
    is there a way to load those specific modules without root password? i could teach sudo to allow modprobe without password but that would be a security problem.

    I'm experiencing some problems with suspend to ram on my x230t. since kernel 3.10 i often get a kernel panic when i suspend.
    i use an up to date system (no testing) with linux-ck-ivybridge and intel graphics. i wrote systemd scripts to unload third party modules before suspend (like vboxdrv).
    that actually doesn't solve the problem but i thought it might be a good idea if only loading such modules when they are really needed, i don't use virtualbox often.
    thanks for the reply, i think this can work. the script can only be changed by root so this would be no security problem.
    so this is solved, i'm thinking about a new topic regarding my kernel panics, do you know where to get the kernel logs of the panic?
    when i go to suspend the sleep led blinks fast and the screen is blank, so i have to rely on log files.

  • [solved] icewm copy and paste (terminal)

    copy and paste works perfectly between graphical programms (e.g. abiword and firefox). However if I mark something in xterm I can't copy and paste to another application, like an editor or abiword.
    I don't have this problem in xfce: copy in the terminal and paste somewhere else works.
    What can I do?

    sorry, but I have a 2-button wheel mouse. I will search some more xsel details myself, thanks.
    Edit: http://www.vergenet.net/~conrad/softwar … el.1x.html Here they are.
    I have replaced xterm by xfce-terminal. Now I can copy and paste without any problems.
