[Solved] Suspend to Disk: systemd-hibernate.service Fails

Howdy-ha, folks.  I know this looks pretty mundane, but for the life of me I can't get hibernation to work.  Each time I run systemctl hibernate the screen will go blank as though preparing to suspend, then come back on; journalctl shows the same error messages:
PM: Cannot find swap device, try swapon -a.
PM: Cannot get swap writer
Failed to start Hibernate.
Dependency failed for Hibernate.
Service sleep.target is not needed anymore. Stopping.
Unit systemd-hibernate.service entered failed state.
This happens when swap is mounted, and "swapon" says as much.  I've been working on this for about four hours now, and none of what I've found seems to pertain to my situation (most of the "solutions" were "Increase partition size').
What I've tried:
- Three different kernels---linux-ck custom build and linux-ck-sandybridge from graysky's repo (both with BFQ and CFQ: see below), as well as the stock Arch kernel
- A 2 Gb swap file at /swapfile on my SSD;
- A 4 Gb swap partition on /dev/mmcblk0 (an SD card, and my preferred method/location, if possible);
- An 8 Gb swap partition on HDD /dev/sdb2
Reasons for wanting hibernate rather than suspend-to-RAM:
- Maximize battery life.
- There's some kind of issue with Linux-ck and suspending to RAM; it'll work once, then freeze in a kernel panic the second time, forcing a hard reset.  The stock kernel suspends to RAM, but still won't hibernate
- I put a lot of time into building a custom Linux-ck kernel, and would rather not have to start the configuration over with the stock kernel if possible.
I'm working with limited space on my boot drive and, as mentioned, increasing the amount of swap has no bearing on this.  The resulting phenomenon and error messages are the same, regardless of size and medium.  I've exhausted my ideas on where to look, and what to even look for.  Thanks a lot to everyone in advance (especially you,karol; don't think I don't see you lurking back there )

I rebooted, so trying to recreate the same situation:
$ free -h
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 7.7G 7.2G 525M 0B 32M 2.3G

Swap: 3.7G 0B 3.7G
top reports nearly the same thing:
top - 20:00:13 up 22 min, 1 user, load average: 0.12, 0.22, 0.14
Tasks: 155 total, 1 running, 154 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
%Cpu(s): 0.1 us, 0.3 sy, 0.1 ni, 99.5 id, 0.0 wa, 0.0 hi, 0.0 si, 0.0 st
KiB Mem: 8061380 total, 7500096 used, 561284 free, 34432 buffers
KiB Swap: 3872236 total, 0 used, 3872236 free, 2417172 cached
htop, however, reports about 1.5 Gb more free RAM.  After reboot, swappiness is still set to 100 with the same results.

    After last update made yesterday I was unable to reboot. With the help of an installation cd  and chrooting I disabled my graphical login manager lxdm which, when started, seems to do nothing and the system is stuck.
    Without lxdm service enabled, I can start xfce4 with
    startxfce4
    from commandline and everything seems to run fine. 
    But the booting process gives me several messages telling that the service systemd-logind failed. Apart from the virtual console created while booting and the one running X11 there is no other one (no login prompt when pressing strg+alt f3 e.g.)

    I don't know if I got you point - but here is a try:
    I am running X11 started manually with "startxfce4". So firing up a konsole in X11 I do and get

    I ran the service directly I get:

    What I figured out so far is this in addition:
    - krusader does not start- there is no response or message in the konsole when firing up this application.
    - I can only mount nfs-shares with the option "-o nolock" otherwise I get, e.g.
    mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
    mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.
    mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

    I removed the PrivateNetwork=yes from the service file, however this didn't seem to work.  I did not enable the kernel modules.  I am currently running the following kernel: 3.17.6-1-ARCH

    A more permanent solution is to mask that file
    mkdir -p /etc/pm/power.d
    touch /etc/pm/power.d/laptop-mode
    which will not get written on update or reinstall. (Not than an update to this package seems at all likely but just in case.)

    There are some mismatches, for example on sddm group which requires 996 GID but on my system i have GID 992.
    What should i do in oder to fix it?

    Hi thanks for the reply, i've fixed fot the half of the groups' errors, for the others it gives me that the group X doesn't exist. This the output:
    # groupmod --gid 102 polkitd
    groupmod: group 'polkitd' does not exist
    # groupmod --gid 84 avahi
    groupmod: group 'avahi' does not exist
    # groupmod --gid 124 colord
    groupmod: group 'colord' does not exist
    # groupmod --gid 133 rtkit

    I had tried to re-install yesterday for example git and sddm packages but it didn't fix the issue.

  • Systemd dhcpcd service failing on boot

    I'm trying to convert my workstation to "pure" systemd configuration (no initscripts-systemd):

    Per the instructions on the wiki, I enabled [email protected], but the service fails to start upon boot.

    However, I can start the service manually after the boot process is complete:

    Presumably not all dependencies have been satisfied when systemd tries to run dhcpcd during boot.
    I'm very new to systemd; any tips for troubleshooting this issue?

    Yes. Same thing here with the latest install. I put "tg3" in /etc/modules-load.d/tigon.conf. Guess it loads it sooner then and now it gets an IP. Couldn't you make dhcpcd wait for eth0 to come up? It looks important, I mean dhcp should work I'm a newbie with Arch, installed it for the first time.

  • [SOLVED] Trouble with running systemd user service on login

    I'm trying to get emacs to run as a systemd/user service so that it will start up faster, as suggested in the wiki article, but I'm having some problems.
    I can't get the service to run as soon as I log in. I can run the service with
    systemctl --user start emacs
    and it will run for the rest of my session, but if I try to run
    systemctl --user enable emacs
    I get the following error:
    The unit files have no [Install] section. They are not meant to be enabled
    using systemctl.
    Possible reasons for having this kind of units are:
    1) A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's
    .wants/ or .requires/ directory.
    2) A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has
    a requirement dependency on it.
    3) A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer,
    D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...).
    I ran
    systemctl --user is-enabled emacs
    and that returned
    static
    but I'm not sure what that means. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Are you sure there isn't a typo in your unit file? The example you linked to in the wiki does have an [Install] section.
    Post your ~/.config/systemd/user/emacs.service file here so we can take a look.

    I'm using xfce 4.10 with consolekit. So the question is: do i need systemd-logind.service?
    And, may be, can i get rid of consolekit and use this systemd feature, even if xfce4-session and slim need it?and finally, is there a good guide to help me doing this?

    It's running in any case - systemd starts it on its own whether you explicitly enable it or not. Confirm with "systemctl status systemd-logind.service".
    You may want to investigate the "loginctl" tool that comes with systemd - it shows you what logind is doing for you.

    I have my root partition set up as a dm-crypt encrypted volume, and I followed the instructions here to set up a swap file.
    I also followed these instructions to add the resume hook to my mkinitcpio.conf between encrypt and filesystems.
    I modified the /etc/default/grub file like so:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="cryptdevice=/dev/disk/by-uuid/0cb6b266-ce81-4b2f-9958-722c788c46ef:cryptroot cryptkey=/dev/disk/by-uuid/18868ab9-e0dd-4634-9f9e-69f3d3686d3f:ext2:/laptopkey root=/dev/mapper/cryptroot resume=/dev/mapper/cryptroot resume_offset=4952064"
    I determined the offset using the swap-offset tool provided by the uswsusp package.
    And I ran
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    and
    grub-mkconfig

    Usually I use the output of blkid to find out the correct uuid. The uuid to use for / or swap is the one pointing to one of /dev/dm*.

  • Systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

    Hi,
    I am running Arch with Cinnamon started by mdm-display-manager. I had this running for quite some time without an issue.
    Recently an issue popped out - OCCASIONALLY systemd-logind fails to start and I get stuck on boot screen. This happens maybe once in 5-10 boots. I have to do hard reset afterwards. CTL+ALT+DEL won't work, I can not switch to other console and I have no network to SSH to that machine.
    Other than that, system starts just fine.
    I am not sure, how to debug this further and would appreciate advice.

    Hi,
    I have exactly the same problem. systemd-logind sporadically fails to start, therefore preventing the login prompt to appear. Resetting the machine is the only solution in that case. Most of the time, the system start works without problems though. Here are a few relevant lines from my logs:

  • Cannot start systemd-logind.service when booting.

    The boot sequence had a logind.service fail, and then was stuck when trying to open the Gnome Display Manager. The output was:

    After a fresh install on a brandnew laptop, my root partition is being mounted read only, and I see that systemd-remount-fs.service fails:

    Thanks for the quick response, WonderWoofy ( by the way, great username! )!
    When I removed or modified the the mount options in the bootloader kernel command line, there was no change to the status of the fs after boot-up. I had changed it at one point from 'ro', to 'rw'; but doing so had no affect on the output of the mount command.
    However, I did finally identify the cause:  turns out if I specify 'data=writeback', in fstab for the root partition, then systemd-remount-fs.service fails, as per my OP - leaving me with a 'ro'-mounted root filesystem. Simply removing that, or changing it to 'data=ordered', solved the issue: when I rebooted, the root partition was mounted as per my fstab config.
    So, my fstab now looks like this:
    # /dev/sda5
    UUID=a09ff37e-ce60-4173-b95a-4b71a53c01d3 / ext4 rw,noatime,discard 0 1
    # /dev/sda6

  • [SOLVED][systemd 210] systemd-backlight@.service gets loaded and fails

    Hello,
    I just updated to 210 and rebooted as soon as possible as advised. The first thing I noticed is the red [Failed] message during startup. After looking at systemctl I noticed that systemd-backlight@backlight:eeepc-wmi.service fails. There are 3 things wrong with this 1) I don't have a backlight this is on a desktop 2) It's not an eeePC 3) I never had any failed services before the update. I tried to disable this service, but the service still tries to start and fails on every boot. I read about systemd-backlight here: http://www.freedesktop.org/software/sys … rvice.html but it doesn't really help much to explain why it tries to load this service in the firstplace. I have not tried masking it, but this would not fix the underlying problem anyway.
    The systemctl status doesn't provide any usful information.

  • [SOLVED] systemd : services failing to start on boot

    I have removed sysvinit completely as per the systemd wiki pages.
    I don't usually re-boot very often so I'm not sure exactly when the problem started.
    I only noticed this problem about 4 or 5 days ago.
    But now whenever I reboot my machine 2 services fail consistently.
    adsl.service
    colord.service
    They both start flawlessly once I can log in at a console.
    I'm using kde and in the last couple of days, while trying to fix my problem, the kdm service has failed to start a couple of times too - saying there is no X server.
    Before switching to systemd I never had any of these problems using the old rc.conf method. My DAEMONS array had the adsl service start after the network service.
    I need some help and advice to find out what is causing the problem and how to fix it.

    That seems to confirm your theory.
    eth0 link is not up when attempting to start colord and adsl
    So the $64,000 question:
    How do I defer them until eth0 is ready?
    Or how can I force the eth0 link to be up before colord or adsl try to use it?
