Although I do not have 'switch to new tab immmediately' ticked, when I ask to open in new tab it switches immediately. This is a problem as I open several tabs from my main page and don't want to go to them at once, I'll look at them in order as I need them. Since an update I now have it switching to the opened tab, and I have to keep flicking back to the main tab. It's giving me repetitive strain problems having to keep clicking the mouse more than necessary. It's an option in the settings, I'd like it to rmain that way. I seriously don't want to keep having to go back to my main page every time I want to open a new tab. Could you make it as it was before please, it was super then. Many thanks in advance. :-)
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

How do I stop firefox from switching to new tab when opening bookmarks in new tab
When I open a link in a new tab it does not switch to it automatically. I had to reinstall firefox to stop it from switching to new tabs automatically since the option being unticked didn't stop it from happening anyway. Now only when I open a bookmard in a new tab it still switches to the new tab and I do not want it to. Why is it doing this with the option unchecked and a fresh install with no add ons of any sort? And how do I make it stop?
Try to set the Boolean pref <b>browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground</b> to <i>true</i> on the <b>about:config</b> page.

I'm using 33.0.1 firefox. When I google I don't want a new tab to be opened unless I rt click and open.
As far as I remember, I wasn't the case before. Could someone help to change the settings or how do I open the link in that particular page itself rather opening in new tab?
Thankshello, this is a google setting that you can change at google.com/preferences.

When I open a link it switches me to that tab even though under tools>options>tabs> I unchecked "switch to new tab immediately". I tried opening Firefox in Safe mode and it still switches to the new tab.

I have usually 4 tabs open by default. If, for example, I'm in the first tab and middle-click a link to open a new tab, the tab opens but firefox focuses on the tab immediately adjacent to the tab I'm on (in this case, from tab 1 to tab 2 instead of staying on tab 1 whilst tab 5 is loading). The pattern repeats if I'm on tab x and open a new tab from tab x, but focus shifts to tab (x+1) instead of staying on tab x.
It happens more often than not, i.e. it sometimes stops but usually happens.
I have this setup for a year now and this is the first time this is happening. I believe since this latest update of 3.6.13.This issue can be caused by an extension or plugin that isn't working properly.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") -

Earlier it did not happen like this. It is really very annoying. Re-installation and clean installation of the latest version did not helped.
And this is happening mainly when I am using Facebook. Earlier it never happened so with Facebook.I don't have the divX plug-in and I still have this problem. Why should plug-ins that are not even triggered by the affected pages alter Firefox's behavior. Feels like bad architecture.

Bookmarks don't open in new tabs?
Hi there!
I often check a lot of websites at the same time, so I always selected the websites I wanted to check in the bookmarks menu, and double clicked them. They always opened in new tabs, and that was so good!
Now I select bookmarks and for one or another reason, Safari keeps opening them in a window per bookmark. Opening 10 bookmarks = opening 10 windows.
I tried the "open bookmarks in new tab: always" setting in the preferences menu, but without success!
Who can help me?
It seems as if Mountain Lion has gained some good things, improved some bad OS X Lion things, but it forgot about the good OS X Lion things
BobPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Firefox switches to new tab, even when I ask it not to.
I currently have my Firefox set to NOT switch to a new tab immediately when a link opens one. However, each time I do click on a link to open a new tab it does switch. I have tried Firefox in safe mode and still have the same issue. I have read previous articles on this, and have also made sure that my appearance is set to default. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi, to check to see if the attribute it changing you can check under the hood at the '''about:config '''page.
The attribute to look for:
browser.tabs.loadInBackground
services.sync.prefs.sync.browser.tabs.loadInBackground
# about:config, click I will be careful
# copy and paste the attributes above and look for the Value column
# Are these two the same? Mine are not and I would love to confirm this behavior. After I sync the behavior changes.
To make sure that this does not happen in a new profile a fun experiment a user taught me is to try this in a new user profile as well. [[http://mzl.la/LL5Dxl]] If it still persists in the new profile, please do let us know, we are happy to help. -
How to stop firefox from switching to new tab?
The issue I am dealing with is that I want Firefox to open all links in a new tab but not to switch to them automatically. I have checked all the settings in the Tools >> Options >> Tab menu and I have them all checked except for the last two. I am on Firefox version 36.0.1 and I have refreshed Firefox several times and have deleted and recreated a new profile. Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing or are there some settings in the About:Config that can be changed to make this happen?
Firefox doesn't have a built-in feature to divert ALL links to a new tab, only the choice of diverting links coded to open in a new window to a new tab instead.
What you are describing in your Tab Options is correct for the built-in feature. Some sites that use scripts instead of normal links might not be handled correctly, so if this is site-specific, we could look at the site and give you suggestions for workarounds.
I think you will need an add-on to handle other links. Hopefully one of the ones in the earlier post will help: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1052093#answer-704101 -
HT1338 how can I stop safari switch into new tab?
Whenever I open a link in new tab, my laptop switches into the new tab, which makes me so angry. I tried so many times, but I didn't find where to make my laptop stay at the old tab even when I open a new link. I need your help.
Thank youI'm not sure if this will suffice, but if you hold the Command key while clicking on a link, it will open in a new tab behind the current tab.
You may want to just open a new tab behind the current tab, without clicking a specific link. I have it set to open new tabs showing Top Sites. If I hold the Command key and click the Top Sites "button" on the toolbar, I get a new tab showing Top Sites behind the current tab. For me, this is equivalent to giving the new tab command, except for the tab appearing in front of the current tab (with the new tab command). -
Middle click on search suggestions in Search Bar does not switch to new tab
I use profile option "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" = yes (check marked)
Middle clicking on a search suggestion in the Search Bar does open a new tab but Firefox does not switch to it.
This feature used to work for many years until very recently.
Anybody have any ideas?Did the problem start with the new search bar design in Firefox 34?
If you want to switch back to using the old bar, it's still hidden inside. Here's how you would do it:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box that appears above the list, type or paste '''search''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons''' preference to switch it from true to false
This doesn't affect the current window, but each new window you open (Ctrl+n) will have the old Search bar.
I'm not sure when that will be phased out... -
Websites don't open in new tab on SharePoint 2013 pages
Hello,
I have Open in new tab checked in the page editor for a link on SharePoint 2013 page. When the page is published, the link does not open up at all. I have to do a right mouse click and select "Open in a new tab" manually. I am
using IE 11.
Anyway there could be something to get this to work with IE? When use the page in Google Chrome, the website opens up in a new tab. Not with IE.
Any help would be much appreciated.
PaulI am editing links on a webpage on a SharePoint page. I am in the content management system on SharePoint 2014. I have check out the page and in the editing mode. I have highlighted a link on a page and can edit the link. There is an option to select
"Open in a new tab". This is an internal SharePoint site, our intranet. Client OS are Windows 8.1.
I have read that it could be the Pop-Up blocker or the Protect mode for intranet. I will check those out.

Links in Hotmail emails don't open in new tab
Someone apparently made changes in about:config settings. I opened my home page MSN and when I clicked on Hotmail link, the Hotmail sign in page opened in a new tab. Previously when I clicked on teh Hotmail link on MSN home page, the sign in page would open in a new window in the same tab. I made a change in about:config and fixed that, though I cannot remember exactly what I did. Sorry for that! Now when I read one of my Hotmail messages, and I click on a link in one of them, the link opens in a window in the same tab. Until last night (after I returned from being out shopping) the link in a Hotmail message would open in a new tab. That's how I'd like it. I'd also like the Hotmail sign in page to open in a new window in the same tab when I click on the Hotmail link on the MSN homepage.
Can anyone tell me what I need to change in about:config to do this?

Please forgive the very delayed response. It is due to illness. I have copied and pasted the information as you instructed, and maybe you might have some insight as to what is going on. Any input is much appreciated.

Don't have "Open New Tab" when I right click an open tab after Firefox 18 upgrade
I used to be able to right click an open tab and one of the drop down options was to open a new tab. Where did it go?
You can also use this extension [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-4-ui-fixer/?src=search UI Fixer] that adds back that option, amongst other ones,or this other extension that does just that [https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/addon/new-tab-in-tab-context-menu/ New Tab in Tab Context Menu] .
