[SOLVED] System load on idle is ~.30 after update

After doing an update my system load now hovers around ~.30 when idle. I have a pretty mininal system so this shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Before the update my system load would usually read 0.00 0.01 0.05 when It was idling. Now it seems to jump at random times.
Conditions which seem to produce a higher load are when:
MPD is playing a song, Having it run while stopped does nothing
A program is running that measures the system load such as htop or i3status
Firefox is running. It seems to effect the load more now (but I could be wrong on this one)
Even without X running, if I have htop or top running the system load spikes randomly. If I check it periodically with uptime the load stays at 0.
This is the pacman log from the time I last knew for sure that the load acted normal up until now:

Any ideas?

litemotiv, luuuciano: I agree that the "solution" is not a very good one, but, taking the stated problem and context of where it was posted into consideration I think that "[SOLVED]" is appropriate. My system load no longer idles at a high number (which was the originally stated problem in the subject field) and this subforum is particular to pacman upgrading issues, not to linux kernel issues. But if you really think that I should remove the tag, then I will, because, based on your post counts, you two obviously have more forum experience than I do.

  • [SOLVED] vi (vim) no longer works properly after updating the system

After updating the system with pacman -Syu vi stopped working. All syntax colors are gone, and everything is grey. When I press i to enter "insert" mode, editing is not visible. Changes are obscure and you can't tell what you are modifying.  Quitting with :q will still prompt you to use :q! to abort changes, even if no changes were visibly made.
When scrolling to the beginning or end of a file, the screen flashes with grey glitch like areas.  What happened to my vi!?!?!?!?!?
This all happened while following the beginner's guide to install arch linux.  I realized this when trying to arbitrarily read a test file I made directly after updating.
The problems continued to be visible when installing and setting up sudo (those steps are the next steps that require vi)...  I think the sudo installation worked... but my vi is horribly glitchy
    Any ideas?

Setting EDITOR does not help in every case. For instance, visudo is by default hard linked to vi. (You can change this, I know. )
But in fact, vi is only a symlink to ex. So I simply renamed this link and put another symlink to vim (vim-big in my case since I in fact do use the gvim package).
    /usr/bin/vi -> vim-big
    /usr/bin/vi-simple -> ex
The drawback is that I have to set those links on every vi-update. (But I sure will remember...)

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.2 - Applications Menu empty after update

After updating all my boxes from 3.0 to 3.2, one of them got the Applications Menu wiped. The .desktop files are all there but none show up in the Menu, it's just empty.
Apart from that everything seems to work just fine, did anyone came across a similiar problem or knows a solution ? I tried to google how to regenerate the Menu but failed to find anything useful and/or gnome3 related.

Now today, after a reboot, my wireless card won't activate (I normally run on wired, but I needed to hook my printer up and its wireless) and the system locks up and freezes at random times (it just stops...the display displays everything as normal except nothing responds. there are no log messages in everything.log about it).
I have determined that the wireless problem probably came from the firmware update since when I tried to start the wireless card it said:
    phy0 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request firmware
My wireless shows up in lspci as an Ralink Corp. RT2800 802.11n PCI which is correct.
How do I go about troubleshooting these issues? I am very new to Arch Linux (it's been a week or so now) so I think this will probably be a handy skill to have.

Looking at my currently loaded modules (using lsmod) it would seem that my wireless driver is loaded at the module level:
    rt2800pci 9681 0
    rt2800lib 43247 1 rt2800pci
    rt2x00pci 5050 1 rt2800pci

    cfg80211 170074 2 mac80211,rt2x00lib
I also found some handy output from dmesg:

Since the firmware for this update just came out on the 27th is it possible something made its way in there and broke this? I can't seem to find anyone else who has had this problem and from all appearances it looks like it should be working (and it used to work quite well).
EDIT: One thing I am not sure about is that the firmware is in the firmware directory. Here are all the rt* firmwares. Is this correct or should there be an rt2x00 firmware in there?

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3.6: Icons are missing after updating

I did a (somewhat large) update yesterday which seemed to go fine. Since then, I'm missing a bunch of icons from various parts of Gnome. I'll attach some pictures that show what Nautilus looks like and the desktop top right menus. I use Faience icons usually, but changing it back to Gnome default doesn't help. I also deleted all the hidden Gnome configuration files, but that didn't help either.

  • [SOLVED] Plasma workspace crash (SIGSEGV) at login after update

    Hi all,
after I updated via pacman -Syu last weekend and rebooted my system I got a plasma workspace crash at the login which happens ever since.
    I get:
The application Plasma Workspace (plasma) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV).

This backtrace appears to be of no use.
This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash.

However I've downgraded all of them back but the crash remains. I also removed qtmod and installed qt from the arch repositories but still no effect on the bug. Also tried to rename the .kde4/ folder to make KDE generating a new plain folder but doesn't help with the problem. Even complete removal of KDEmod and new installation didn't make a change.
I hope someone can help cause I'm runnig out of ideas what to try next.
    thanks, potzi

You can find old packages here:
    http://arm.kh.nu/
That repo has saved my life a number of times. Especially with BLUETOOTH GRRRR.
As for getting all your old settings back, I didn't investigate this enough because i only have opensuse for curiosity as I think they do some really great stuff.
Basically I hadn't yet isolated what was causing the problems before I gave up because every time I tried to merge my old settings in to the new user account, I recreated the problem. No logical (subjective term obviously) separation of what to merge and what not to merge worked. So I gave up and just did everything manually. Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful.

  • [SOLVED]Low performance of nvidia 290.40 after updated.

    UPDATED
Update to 290.49 and be solved.
    ORIGINAL
Updated my system, nvidia was updated to 290.40 from 290.33. After rebooted, GNOME 3 was crashed, and the same to GDM.
I can start KDE, but have to go with unbearable slow, and programs with OpenGL is also very very slow, so now I can only use Openbox and firefox, even Totem does not work now.
    Followings are solution I found:
    1. I searched the forum and found 2 posts, from which I could find a solution: Downgrade nvidia to 290.33:
        i. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=139553
        ii. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=139535
    2. Having searched Google, I found another one which eventually proved helpless: Rebuild kernel with kernel config CONFIG_AGP set to y
The problem can be solved by following the solution 1, but I  want a better solution.
Need more useful information? Just tell me in the reply.
I hope my english won't puzzle you.
    Appreciate very much.

  • [SOLVED] Dual boot with Windows 8, problems after updating Windows

    Hi all,
I have been maintaining a dual boot of arch and Windows 8 for some time. I recently updated Windows to 8.1, and found that the update process had two side effects:
    1) The update added a new partition in the middle of my file table, so my /etc/fstab which referenced "/dev/sda6" was wrong because that partition is now "/dev/sda7."
    2) The default boot device was switched to the Windows Boot Loader instead of grub. But, this is not a problem because I can work around this by using the "Choose boot device" feature of my bios at start up.
So, neither of these problems are critical for me at the moment. I can fix my fstab and just press a hotkey at startup.
EDIT: I have avoided the /etc/fstab issue by referencing my partitions using UUID as specified in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab.
How do I set the default boot device back to grub? There is some weirdness here, I think windows is using UEFI booting and my grub uses the old booting system.
Last edited by bjmnbraun (2014-05-14 19:00:36)

Rex: I tried that command, got some warning messages regarding blocklists, but no dice.
Loqs: You are right about windows using a ESP and UEFI while my linux is not booting using UEFI. My bios is configured to try "Legacy boot" first before trying UEFI. Getting linux to boot using UEFI seemed like a pain, so...
I went into my BIOS settings and found that the Windows Boot Manager boot device was listed in front of my hard disk (which boots linux). I don't think this used to be the case, so something about the update caused my BIOS to reorder the boot devices (probably because the partitions changed).
Switching my hard disk to be above the Windows Boot Manager in the boot device list now makes me boot into linux by default, and I can boot into windows by pressing a hotkey at bootup and selecting the windows boot manager.

  • Websites loads pixelated images in firefox after update to version 23

After firefox updated to version 23 blogs that have image is loaded pixelated. I'm on windows 7. I tried every solutin I seen:
    open firefox in safemode ;
    deselect the "Use hardware acceleration when available" box ;
also the page basic style didn't help.
what can i do to fix this

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 26: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
if possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

The issue appears when clicking on a menu item from the top of chrome, and if there is a list then the blue highlighting of each item as the cursor moves down only highlights every second item instead of every item as normal.
I have had this happen in the past but was unsure which package was the culprit.  I don't know from the above list which package update may have been responsible, but since the same effect has been seen on 4 different machines I presume it is likely kdebase-workspace?  This is with KDE as the desktop environment, and with all packages up to date.  Has anyone else seen this issue and if so is there a workaround or is it a known bug.  It is an odd one to google for but presumably I am not the only one who has seen this issue.  The version of chrome is chrome stable google-chrome 36.0.1985.125-1
    Thanks.

I have no idea what the root cause is but if you turn off compositing (Alt+Shift+F12), it'll stop. You can use the Window Rules KCM to make a rule that'll automatically stop/start compositing when Chromium is started. Sadly, this is a poor workaround as you lose all the niceties that compositing brings You can also change KWin's render mode from OpenGL to Raster but that's too intrusive for me - I'd rather just disable compositing as a whole. I'm using a laptop with an HD4000 set to use the default SNA acceleration.

    Never mind.
It fixed itself after a couple reboots

  • [Solved] No sound on my arch workstation (after update)

    Hi,
I yesterday updated my workstation and installed linux 3.17.4. After a reboot, the sound magically disappeared In fact I don't know, if it's related to the updated, it was coincedented but may be not related.
I found the alse information script, the output can be seen here:
    http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=579e7 … 7f90c8b6f5
I can provide an update log if it helps.

It is not only the linux kernel, but i just tested downgrading and it didn't has any effect.
I am not using Pulseaudio or somthing like this, the log says i have jack installed but not running. The Soundcard is an HDA Intel PCH with an ALC269VB Codec. I tried to figure out my last steps i made before the sound stopped working. From the log i know, that yesterday after the update, the workstation was rebooted. I have not changed anything in the configuration yesterday so, it has to be connected to the update. This is the pacman log:
