[SOLVED] System stopped seeing my second HDD

Today after system upgrade and reboot my Arch stopped seeing my second HDD (it doesn't appear in /dev )
Disk: WD3200AAJS
dmesg:
# dmesg | grep ata1.01

[ 0.728464] ata1.01: no PIO support
[ 5.879153] ata1.01: no PIO support
[ 5.879155] ata1.01: disabled
Disk is still accessible by Windows(which boots from it) so it can't be broken(or can?)...

Storage Controller set as IDE (the second option to choose is AHCI)
Arch kernel doesn't have support for IDE devices anymore, you should select AHCI. The problem is that if you installed "Windows" with the controller as IDE then it will seace to work when you select AHCI.
For what i've read arround here, there is a workarround for IDE devices, but i don't know if it works anylonger:

  • The CPU fan starts with the case switch on and the system stops after 2 seconds

    Hi,
I have just bought the MSI K8N Neo FSR (MS 7030) to build a new computer with (amongst others) an Athlon 64 3000 processor and an Enermax 3051 case.
The CPU fan starts when I switch on the power with the switch on the back of the case, but stops after two seconds. I don't get anything when I push the Start button of the case.
At the beginning I got some feeble orange light on the D-bracket LEDs. Now, there is nothing at all.
I have tried to do a CMOS and also to put the Mobo out of the case after having disconnected the HD, the DVD reader, the floppy disk reader and all the Front panel connectors ===> nothing changed.
The Power capacity of my case is 300 watts. I had computed on Power Supply Wattage Calculator (http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/Power_Supply_Calculator.php?cmd=AMD) that it is quite sufficient for my system.
Other materials on my system: the MSI FX5200-T and a PQI RAM PC 3200 which worked well on a former MSI Mobo (K7N2 Delta). I don't intend to keep this RAM on my new system but I use it to test it, before installing the Corsair Value which are on the system with which I write this post.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Finally, it appears that I had damaged the motherboard and the CPU.
When I installed the CPU, I hesitated because the User's guide said that "the gold arrow should point towards the lever pivot", whereas the illustration and the AMD's one pointed towards the opposite corner. I had finally made the good choice (that of the illustrations), but I have certainly displaced some pins of the processor while hesitating.
The shopper told me that MSI will never agree that its text had troubled me and refused to give me a new motherboard.
I have finally bought an ASUS motherboard and, as I was fed up with the computer building, I paid a technician to do this job.
I would like to mention two other mistakes in the MSI K8N Neo User's guide:
    - it devoted one page to the installation of the retention mechanism which was already installed.
    - there was no explanation about the mention of two "Power LED" connectors.
I acknowledge that I have been stupid, since I should have asked the question of the direction of the golden arrow in a forum, where I would have found very quckly the right answer to my hesitation.
However, I am revolted that MSI does not acknowledge that a grave mistake and two troubling omissions in the User's Guide can lead novice people to grave failures.
I'll never more have confidence in a company that make such mistakes and does not assume its responsibility.
Once again, thank you for your help.

  • Mac mini: OS can not "see" second HDD.

    Hello:
Through a series of unfortunate events I messed up the partition table of my Mac mini server. The OS can not "see" one of the 02 HDDs included in this mini server. Even trying to install the OS from the original DVD fails to see the second HDD, which used to have the boot partition and most of my data.
I boot up using the DVD into Disk Utilities, then I use the Terminal utility:
    diskutil list
    /dev/disk0 => 500 GB
    /dev/disk1 => 500 GB
    Please see screenshots here:
    http://www.nihpo.com/static/images/01.jpg
    http://www.nihpo.com/static/images/02.jpg
But here seems to be the problem:
    /dev/disk2 => 1.3 GB
And partition "2" in this disk has the label "Apple_HFS Mac OS X Base System"
Shouldn't partition disk0s2 have the label "Apple_HFS Mac OS X Base System" instead?
    Running OS X 10.8
Any suggestions on how to get the OS to "see" and boot from partition disk0s2 will be appreciated. Thanks.

And partition "2" in this disk has the label "Apple_HFS Mac OS X Base System"
Shouldn't partition disk0s2 have the label "Apple_HFS Mac OS X Base System" instead?
I'm not on 10.8 to be certain right now, but I don't think so...

  • System stopped detecting wifi networks

Okay it's really weird, today suddenly my router stopped working (to be more specific, wifi stopped working, i didn't have time for further investigating).
I turned it off for about half hour and after turning it on again everything seemed to be okay, but my system stopped seeing most of networks (including my home network).
I did little investigation and my smartphone, notebook and even windows on the same machine, all of them see all networks and can connect to my home network, so it's propably not router's fault.
My wifi card is TP-Link W851ND (and as mentioned above, on windows everything works great so i guess it's something with linux).
I'm using Cinnamon so i'm connecting via networkmanager (but iw .. scan also sees only few networks).
I thought that maybe newer version of some package may be guilty (i ran system upgrade in meantime) but i downgraded all affected packages and nothing changed.
I'm stuck, any ideas what might cause the problem?

  • P6N Diamond New Problem: Second HDD Randomly Starts/Stops Since recent Update

    Howdy All,
Continuing problems with the P5N Diamond.
    This one's new.
Previously I had the same problem as many others with the cold boot issue. Somehow, someway, it just stopped: cold boot or not, one day it just started booting fine....go figure.
However, I recently (about 3 weeks ago) did the MSI live update that included something or other pertaining to the E-SATA....support for it or something to that end. Although I don't use the E-SATA, I installed it thinking I might at some point and since installing it, I have discovered a new problem: my second drives (in RAID 0) just opens/closes randomly. It seems to mostly occur when operating demanding programs: gaming, watching a video, that sort of thing.
Everytime it does this, it takes me to desktop and asks me what program I want to use to open the program......which when I do, is nothing more than my second (D drive) HDDs in RAID 0. I then get the yellow pop up message in the bottom toolbar from Windows saying it's experienced a write failure problem. It hasn't done any damage that I can tell and I've lost nothing, but being taken to desktop perpetually is a major issue. This problem is driving me absolutely up the wall. No sooner than I start to do something and wham.....I'm at desktop being asked what program I want to use to open up the second HDDs. I've also tried just leaving it open but to no avail: it just randomly continues to open and close.
I have my O/S on the C drive and 2 more HDDs in RAID O for back up on ports 6 & 7. Since doing the MSI update that included the E-SATA whatever, this new problem almost prevents the computer from being usable: certainly nothing in gaming is possible along with anything that requires uninterruption.
    Here's my system:
    M/B: P6N Diamond
    CPU: E6850
    RAM: Corsair XMS PC-8500, 2 x 1 gig
    HDD: 1- WD 150 Raptor
    HDD: 2- WD 5000AAKS in Raid 0
    Vid Card: EVGA 8800GTX
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750 Silencer
    ODD: Sony DRU 830A
    FDD: Sony Floppy
    Misc: Scythe fans x 5
    O/S: XP Pro w/ SP2
    Running BIOS 1.2
So, being fairly certain the MSI update created the problem, my question is, how do I undo the MSI's most recent update to remove it? When I go into Add/Remove Programs, nothing is listed there. I'm not sure this is the source of the problem but I do know I didn't have it beforehand.
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this....even any ideas. While I have some computer knowledge, I'm not as tech savvy as most here, but this problem is, apart from driving me up a wall, making the computer almost unusable. FYI, I haven't done a System Restore because I've installed several things since and don't want to lose them if I can isolate the problem, but I will if that's what you all recommend.
Again, sorry for what may be a noobish question, but I'm not sure where else to go. After dealing with MSI's tech support, I'd rather talk to a wall.
    Thanks greatly.

    Mark,
Forgive me for asking, but I am a bit confused. Is your "cold boot issue" now solved? If so, do you think that the new drives are the key?

    Sorry for late post.
After setting up the HW RAID (2500YS) for booting the system still cold boots.  strangely this time the reset (Ctrl+Alt+Del) doesn't seem to work.  I must of did it two dozen times and it would never clear.  I then just powered off after the other 2 drives on the nvidia SATA cleared and seen the HD LED light up and stay on for a few seconds(seems stuck on the 4723 checks of the drive) and then powered down and powered right back up with no cold boot issue.  It has worked this way every time for the last week or so and I tested it like 20 or so times(3-4 times a day).  These drives are listed as being compatible after the firmware update (and I did that already) so I guess it is either the MB BIOS needs updating or it's the way the nvidia chipset runs this setup is wacky.  This is assuming the 4723 HD compatibility list is correct.
here's a summary of the drives so far.
36GB Raptors (old revision) - can take forever to boot properly and corrupted my disk in 3 days of testing (scrambled my directory structure)
105GB Raptors - Just reset(Ctrl+Alt+Del) 1-4 times after the HD LED goes solid for a few seconds.  worked for two months no errors.
250GB Caviar RE(2500YS) - have to power off (power button) when HD LED goes solid.  so far no problems for a week.
80 GB SATA II Hitachi Deskstar (HDS728080PLA380 - May 2005) - same as 150 GB Raptors, just a reset or four, only did a days worth of testing with no errors.
well, I was hoping for those 2500YS to work properly.  Now it makes it really hard to track the problems with so many different errors and 3 different places it can go wrong 4723/nvidia/msi/HD Manufacturer.  wait, that's 4.  Oh boy!
Hopefully this gets resolved soon.  I've already had to move this MB to my secondary system, and for other reasons than this.  I didn't mind hitting the reset button to get this to run.  I get the feeling that MSI has abandoned this board on us.  with the new P7N being released it will be even harder to get anyone to mess with this thing.

  • Can't see second HDD in the BIOS boot sequence choice menu

    we have 2 HDDs in a X2170 x86 server
we've installed Solaris 10 on one, and RH on the other.
however, when accessing the BIOS, we can't select which one to boot from in the boot sequence (the "second" HDD does not appear as a choice in the boot sequence menu), and must therefore manually swap the drives into the primary drive slot to boot on our OS of choice...
what are we doing wrong ? how come our second HDD does not appear ?

    Hi,
Really appreciate your continued support - OK, here's detailed response/update:
    1. Both disks are the originals and I've checked both with another PC in external caddy and both seem A1.
    2. Have tried doing as you suggested with the BIOS, but no can do. The BIOS seems to be very limited - it is as follows:
    ACPI version 1.2
    Disks are listed as follows : Current State Built-in HDD1 = 2RAID-0
    Built-in HDD2 = 2RAID-0
    Create State Built-in HDD1 = 2RAID-0
    Built-in HDD2 = 2RAID-0
It lists both disks at the end with their Toshiba Part Nrs, capacity, etc
    3. +When you install recovery image (WXP with recovery discs) both HDDs are recognized properly but after SP3 installation the second one is not visible for Windows explorer and disc management+
    +Can you confirm this?+
    Sequence of events was :
Installed XP (checked config and both disks recognised by Windows)
    Installed SP2 (successfully)
Tried install SP3 - was not successful and machine shut itself down.
After unsuccessfully trying to get it back up, re-installed XP
Checked config and now D: drive not seen by Windows
Swapped disks over in slots to check for slot failure - C: disk worked aok in D: disk slot - but D: disk not seen in the other
Again removed the D: disk and checked it in external caddy on other PC - no probs works aok
    And that's where I'm left.
Seems that there's something about the current state of the D: disk drive that is preventing XP from seeing it - yet the BIOS does ......
Is there any utility I can download that could help sort ??
    Again, many TIA

  • How do I get my G5 to recognise my second HDD?

I was messing with my second HDD permissions and have managed to lose the HDD from my system. I inadvertantly clicked the ownership and permissions to 'no access'.
How do I reverse this process? Disk Utility won't let me do this. I am a mac newbie, so any simple advice would be appreciated.
    TIA

Click on the Finder's Go menu in the menubar and choose "Go to Folder..." . In the text box that appears, enter "/Volumes/" (without the quote marks) and click "Go". You will see an alias of your drive volume there. Leave this where it it and go to the next step:
Next, choose File>New Finder Window from the Menubar, click on the Applications item in the sidebar, and then open the Utilities folder located there. Scroll to the Terminal icon in this window, and double-click it. When the Terminal appears and stops generating text, type in the following:
    sudo chmod 775
Press the space bar, and then click on the first Finder window you opened. Drag the alias representing the disk you need reset into the Terminal window and press Enter. You will then be presented with a password dialog; enter your administrator password there. (Note that the password will not be shown as it is being typed in.) Next, choose Log Out from the Apple menu, and then log back in again.

  • Adding second HDD to HP ENVY 17-j171sa Leap Motion TS SE Notebook PC

    Hi
Just recently upgraded to SSD as HDD1 in my notebook using ribbon cable etc from 'newmodeUS'
All stable and running well, so I installed a second HDD (which I know is working ok) but the notebook does not see it.
I even installed the original HDD as HDD2 but same problem
I can't find any relevant info on diagnosing this issue, but wondered if this model (leap motion) can actually have a second internal HDD
I can't see anything in the BIOS concerning this
One point to note is that I had to remove a maetal plate which was fitted in HDD2 drive bay - possible that it is not designe to accept?
    Thanks
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi Again
I received the new cable from NewmodeUS and they were just great - the new cable arrived within days to the UK.
I have now tried all possible permustations using both cables in either port and my findings are that:
The new cable from NewModeUS is definitely OK.
I have used both cables in both ports and HDD2 NEVER sees a disk
I currently have my new SSD connected to HDD1 with the new cable and the HP Original drive in HDD2 using the original cable
So there is nothing wrong with cables or disks.
I have looked in the BIOS Setup and can't find any way to configure to make HDD2 Sata port work
I have tried looking on WIndows 8.1 device Man etc and can't find anything that I can enable.
So I guess the question is - WHAT DO I DO NEXT?
I still wonder if the Leap Motion or some such thing causes any system level restriction?
    Thanks again

  • Classic won't load 9.1 from second hdd

I have a Powermac G4 Quicksilver (733 mHz, updated to OS X 10.4.8) that I recently purchased from eBay as a gift for a family member. She was running an older G3 (233 mHz, Mac OS 9.1). I took the little 6 GB hard drive from the old Mac and slaved it to the new hdd. OS X found it nicely, with all of the files and applications in place. Super.
However, I’m having issues getting "Classic" to start. It tells me “you have Mac OS 9.1 installed, it is recommended you upgrade to 9.2”. Then, 9.1 begins to load...but the progress bar stops at a tiny sliver and goes no further. I have to force quit. I’ve tried starting Classic from System Preferences with extensions off, etc., with no luck. Classic does see the System Folder on the old hard drive for OS 9.1 as a valid system folder.
I downloaded the 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates, but OS X tries to load Classic in order to install (argh). I copied over the 9.2.x updates to the old drive, and tried to change the startup disk in System Preferences to the 9.1 System Folder on the second drive in order to update to 9.2.2, but it still boots to OS X. I went as far as to disconnect the OS X hdd from the bus and set the 9.1 hdd to master, but I get the dreaded folder/question mark/Mac Smileyface, and 9.1 won’t load.
I should note I didn't see a Classic option within OS X until I added the old hard drive to the system. The OS X System folder doesn’t appear to contain an OS 9 folder for Classic to choose. Any ideas, Macheads?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, Micheal. Thanks for the welcome.
I'm not sure. I know the G3 was initially purchased with 8.x, and then upgraded to 9.1 at some point. I didn't realize that Apple built their OSes to be CPU specfic, so it would be difficult to answer that question. You think this is the case? I thought the G4 was built to be backward compatible with previous versions of Mac OS.

  • Installed, Win 7 Won't Boot from Second HDD

    Hi ya'll,
I've successfully installed Win7 64 Pro on a second internal HD on my fall '12 MBP (X.8.3), located in the optical bay. After having re-attached the first drive, Win7 shows up in the boot selection menu, but when selected, does not boot (error: "please insert boot disk and press any key").
My install process was as follows:
Format second drive into two partitions [OS Extended, FAT32] using disk utility, making sure that the second partition is provided a master boot record.
Disconnect primary drive (SSD), so that the second hdd is recognized as bootable from the Win7 installer.
Boot from prepared bootcamp thumbdrive using a fresh ISO.
Use windows installer to format FAT32 partition as NTFS.
    Install windows
    Install drivers
Update Win 7 and bootcamp drivers
    Power off
    Recconnect primary drive (SSD)
    Power on
Win 7 shows in boot menu. Instead of working, dead-ends at "no bootable device".
Can still boot from SSD or thumbdrive, but not Win7 partition
    Arggggh!
Is there a setting related to the HD controller that needs to be tweaked to make this work? Is there a known issue with the controller firmware? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the final part of the Win 7 install and Mr Blue screen due to the Nividia driver supplied on Win 7 DVD kills iMac GT7300
    1. Install... and Blue screen!
2.Re-boot but from the Win 7 install disk – seems to work if you hold alt on boot up and select the disk to boot from!
3.When you get into the Windows installer, click past the language selection. Then click "Repair your computer".
4.Windows will scan for installations and prompt you with a list. Select your "C" drive and click Next.
5.You should be presented with a windows titled *System Recovery Options*.
At the bottom of this list you should see +Command Prompt+.
    Select the command prompt.
6.When the console opens, you can delete the offending driver using the following command:
    DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NVLDDMKM.SYS
7.Close the command prompt window and click the Restart button.
This time, boot from your hard disk.
You will complete the install with no Blue screen.
Having done this go to the Nivida web site and download the GT 7 series drivers for Windows 7.

  • My HP Pavilian dv6910 stopped seeing my USB external hard drive

My HP Pavilion dv6910 stopped seeing my USB external hard drive. Up until 2 weeks ago I have never had a problem with the laptop reading and writing to my Seagate 500gb hard drive. I have  2 other computers that have no trouble working with the external drive. I thought maybe the circuit board in the external drive case was bad so I bought another one. Same thing. The Vista home premium software will not open the drive. Oddly enough, the drive is seen by the hardware manager and I can get volume information but Windows Explorer does not see it at all.
The laptop has 3 usb2  ports and I have tried them all with the same results. I have other usb devises that work just fine on all ports.
I thought maybe the driver got messed up so I did an auto search to replace and was told the current driver is ok.
I do have a program called Advanced System Care Pro that auto cleans the registry (as well as many other things) and it might have removed something it should not have but I am not sure.
I use the external drive for all my backups so I need to get this problem resolved as soon as possible. Can anyone help we with this?

I meant reinstalling the operating system.
There's a repair disc, but it's generally to repair a corrupted boot protocols.
I had a look around and I can't find any place to download it either.
Just thought if something _ you could try doing a hard reset.
Shut down, remove the battery and adapter, hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Plug only the adapter back in and boot up.
Try you hard drive again _ give it a minute.

  • Second HDD and HDAPM

Hi all. Help me please to solve the problem with HDAPM. Mac mini late 2011.
The first upgrade - replacing the hard drive. I`m installed WD 750Gb, 7200 rpm and HDAPM (http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/)
utility has been installed. Everything was working correctly - the hard drive heads are not parked in idle time. No "marble drop" sound.
I was happy until the next upgrade.
The second upgrade - add second hdd WD 1Tb 5400 rpm. Now WD 750Gb is work place and WD 1Tb is store place.
But, hdapm utility working only with one HDD.
    Question:
How to correct edit hdapm.plist to work when system start for two internal HDD, and HDAPM do two drives for maximum apm performance?
Sory, but I do not know very well the syntax of XML.

    Hi
You should be able to do it with a second plist-file.
