Hi all:
The problem was caused by the NVIDIA driver 173xx branch . I switched to version 304.60 and "systemctl suspend" works fine.
Thanks!

    hello forum,
since two or three days (i think it has smth to do with the new 2.6.24.4-1 kernel upgrade) the s2disk and pm-hibernate command stopped to work.
when i try to supend it starts to suspend, but then after  some seconds it returns to X. the kernel.log is full of such entries:

    solved!
it seems now that the lirc_sir module has to be unload manually. till the last upgrade it was sufficient to stop the lircd before suspending. however it works now!

  • [SOLVED] pm-suspend doesn't work since Linux 3.7.6-1

    Hi,
I have 8 GB RAM and no swap partition and use thus pm-suspend, but since Linux 3.7.6-1-ARCH, it doesn't work properly anymore.
Suspending works fine, but if I want to resume, my external monitor stays black (my laptop monitor is always deactivated by me, when I am working with an external monitor).
Any ideas where this comes from?
    Regards
    Steffo

    1. Check your journalctl logs for any errors
    2. Try and figure out if your machine is actually locked up, or if the backlight is just off. You could ssh in, or try tying commands blindly into a terminal (like reboot or something with a known result)
    3. Try Ctrl-Alt-Fx to switch away from your X session VT and then back again. This is what I have to do right now, as I also get a black screen on resume from suspend.
    4. Try 'systemctl suspend' instead of pm-suspend.
    Good luck!

  • [Solved]Desktop-Terminals don't works

    Hi
I use often desktop-terminals like gnome-terminal or konsole. Since friday no one works. if I start a desktop-terminal, the cursor appears, but I can't type anything and the prompt don't appears. I use the zsh with the configfiles from the grml-project(http://grml.org http://www.laber-land.de/2008/11/13/kur … att-bash/), but it don't work with the bash, too.

Another idea: maybe they can't spawn their own pseudo-ttys? This would explain why you can log in after boot and run x and at the same time can't run terminal emulator. Is there some hint in your logs? A simple test also would be to log in console with x still running with some terminal emulator and issuing "w" command to see if somebody is logged-in on some "pts/0" or something terminal. If it's not then we have our suspect. If it is—maybe then it's authorization problem.

  • [SOLVED] Proxy settings don't work

    Hi there
I hope I don't bother you with a topic that already came up that way.
While I was installing Arch Linux I had to use the proxy of our company, which worked for me.
After the installation I noticed that I had to reenter the command "export http_proxy='url_to_proxy'" again and again, but for pacman, it was working.
Not so for firefox, and after trying and working on it it doesn't work anywhere now.
    Any idea?
With the command "export | grep -i http" I get the following lines:
    declare -x ftp_proxy=url_to_proxy
    declare -x http_proxy=url_to_proxy
I also put this into /etc/environment, which didn't help.
    Hope you can help me.
    Greetings
    Kielo
    EDIT//
    I figured it out now..
1.) Write into /etc/profiles tthe following lines:
    export HTTP_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
    export HTTPS_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
    export FTP_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
2.) Go to System > Preferences > Network Proxy > "Manual Proxy Configuration"; Then (for me) check "Use the same proxy for all protocols"

  • [SOLVED] Menu Entries Don't Work In Syslinux

I installed and set up arch on a flash drive yesterday and it was working great.
Today, I tried to install gnome but I was getting two invalid signature errors from dependencies so I followed philm's advice to remove the pacman caches and ran:
    sudo pacman -Syu
This seemed to update several things, including the kernel. pacman completed without any errors and I rebooted the machine, but now I'm stuck in syslinux, and can't get past the menu.
Selecting "Arch Linux" very quickly brings up a loading message and then the syslinux menu refreshes.
"Arch Linux Fallback" does nothing apparent.
I can access the hardware detection tool, but that's no help.
Even "Poweroff" gives an "APM not present" error.
The only option that does what it's supposed to is "Reboot."
Pressing tab reveals the command being run is:
    > .linux ../vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=[redacted] rw initrd=../initramfs-linux.img
Pressing esc and typing arch at the "boot:" prompt gives:
Loading ../vmlinuz-linux... failed: No such file or directory
As I said I installed arch yesterday so I'm a complete n00b… any ideas of what I could try to fix this?
Last edited by josherick (2014-01-12 06:55:09)

I redacted the UUID more because it was long and cumbersome to type than for security reasons, haha. It points to /dev/sda1, which is an ext4 partition and the only partition on the drive. When I edit the command and substitute the UUID for "/dev/sda1," the exact same thing happens (the menu "refreshes").
It's good to know that poweroff isn't expected to work.
I'll also add that since this is on a flash drive, I can access the entire drive from within another arch install I've got in VirtualBox, if that helps. I've done that and checked the /boot folder and all of the files it is referencing in the errors seem to be in place, although I noticed that /boot/vmlinuz-linux has a size of 0 bytes – is that to be expected or is there an issue here?
This was also working about 2 hours ago so I think it has something to do with updating the kernel

  • [Solved][Awesome]Keyboard don't work at startup

    Hello.
I have the problem with awesome wm. I'm using git build 20120516-1 with default rc.lua.
The problem is, when awesome is started, keyboard (modkey + r) is not working. I must click with mouse on the menu, open terminal, or some app from menu, and then keys start working.
Anyone have an idea why this is happening?
    Thanks.
EDIT: Changed login manager to slim, and all is working fine.

Well, the 'unplugged' reference was noted earlier and I wasn't sure if you'd get a
better response than a standard suggestion to try the other ideas in this link first
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
before actually performing the SMC, that is a dragnet kind of catch-all, sometimes.
All of my keyboard & mouse units are USB and I've gone as far as supplying the
mouse and other peripherals with a powered USB hub; so power from the Mac
isn't spread too thin. The keyboard is one of the only items that should be attached
to the USB port; as it has to work on startup pre-boot keyboard shortcuts... Such
as SafeBoot, PRAM reset, and others where you need a live keyboard and BT
may not be up to the task of being ready. Three going on four of my Macs have
bluetooth capabilities for those items; but I can't justify the continual upkeep cost.
Spare USB keyboards and a few extra mouse are handy as troubleshooting tools, too.
There are some USB keyboard references among search results in this linked page:
    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Apple+USB+keyboard+troubleshooting
Perhaps the SMC pre-reset suggestions may help resolve the issue, if not, try reset.
    Good luck & happy computing!

See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pkgfile for how to enable "Command not found" hook.
    Before:
    $ iftop
    bash: iftop: command not found
    After:
    $ iftop
iftop may be found in the following packages:
    community/iftop 1.0pre4-1 /usr/bin/iftop

  • [solved] locale-gen don't work

    Hi,
I've just got new Arch install but it seems there's some slight problems with locales. I enable few of them in /etc/locale.gen. To be exact:
    #en_SG.UTF-8 UTF-8
    #en_SG ISO-8859-1
    en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
    en_US ISO-8859-1
    #en_ZA.UTF-8 UTF-8
    #en_ZA ISO-8859-1
    #en_ZW.UTF-8 UTF-8
    #li_NL UTF-8
    #lo_LA UTF-8
    lt_LT.UTF-8 UTF-8
    lt_LT ISO-8859-13
    #lv_LV.UTF-8 UTF-8
    #lv_LV ISO-8859-13
    But when I run
    sudo locale-gen
    I get only
    Generating locales...
[edit].Setting system wide locale...Try `localedef --help' or `localedef --usage' for more information.
After that locale -a gives me only C and POSIX.
    Maybe I'm missing something?

    strange problem.
localedef seems to be a tool to build some locales
maybe something has gone wrong during the installation of locales.
    try to reinstall glibc :
    pacman -S glibc
and try again (you'll probably have to edit your /etc/locale.gen again)

    Maybe you can try
    #!usr/bin/env python2
    print "Hallo Monde"
    That for python2, otherwise
    #!usr/bin/env python
    print("Ciao Mondo")
    Last but not least
    $ 2to3 your_python2_file

I installed Archlinux on my work desktop on Monday and can't get poweroff, suspend and hibernate to work. The command `systemctl poweroff` sort of works, except it doesn't actually turn off the computer. Thank you for your replies. Shutdown now doesn't turn the computer off either. About the type of system, I think it was custom built. This is a new install from Monday, so I didn't update the kernel. Poweroff, suspend and hibernate have never worked. The requested output:

  • [SOLVED] Sony Vaio Keys don't work (probably udev issue)

    Hardware: SONY VAIO VPC-EH2L1R
    Linux distribution: archlinux, XFCE
    udev versions: 177, 178 (core), udev-git 20120123-1 (AUR)
    keyboard driver: evdev
At least a week earlier I had some of Sony Vaio Keys working: Volume control (Fn+F2: mute, Fn+F3: down, Fn+F4: up) and Brightness control (Fn+F5: down, Fn+F6: up). Other Vaio Keys (Fn+F1: touchpad switch, Fn+F7: switch video mode, Fn+F12: suspend) never worked.
At some point (I think after updating to udev-177-1) Brightness control keys stopped working. Volume control keys still work.
Brightness control still works directly via acpi.
I know this may sound like this bug, but that solution doesn't work for me - neither updating to udev-git nor manually loading the keymap.
    My keyboards are:
    [ajaxas@r2d2 ~]$ /lib/udev/findkeyboards
    AT keyboard: input/event0
    module: input/event1
    which are actually:
    [ajaxas@r2d2 ~]$ cat /proc/bus/input/devices
    I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0001 Product=0001 Version=ab41
    N: Name="AT Translated Set 2 keyboard"
    P: Phys=isa0060/serio0/input0
    S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input0
    U: Uniq=
    H: Handlers=kbd event0
    B: PROP=0
    B: EV=120013
    B: KEY=402000000 3803078f800d001 feffffdfffefffff fffffffffffffffe
    B: MSC=10
    B: LED=7
    I: Bus=0010 Vendor=104d Product=0000 Version=0000
    N: Name="Sony Vaio Keys"
    P: Phys=
    S: Sysfs=/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0A08:00/device:02/SNY5001:00/input/input1
    U: Uniq=
    H: Handlers=kbd rfkill event1
    B: PROP=0
    B: EV=13
    B: KEY=1f16cf0000 c00000000 10010000000000 200000000 600e00102c00 380000240300400 e000000000000 0
    B: MSC=10
Now, the funny thing is that (I think) udev loads my keymap correctly:
    [ajaxas@r2d2 ~]$ cat /sys/class/dmi/id/{sys_vendor,product_name}
    Sony Corporation
    VPCEH2L1R
Here is this keymap module-sony (which worked until recently!):
    [ajaxas@r2d2 ~]$ cat /lib/udev/keymaps/module-sony
    0x06 mute # Fn+F2
    0x07 volumedown # Fn+F3
    0x08 volumeup # Fn+F4
    0x09 brightnessdown # Fn+F5
    0x0A brightnessup # Fn+F6
    0x0B switchvideomode # Fn+F7
    0x0E zoom # Fn+F10
    0x10 suspend # Fn+F12
    - but here is where it starts getting curiouser and curiouser.
My Volume control keys seem to be mapped to input/event0 (keyboard itself):
    [root@r2d2 ajaxas]# /lib/udev/keynap -i input/event0
scan code: 0xA0 key code: mute
scan code: 0xAE key code: volumedown
scan code: 0xB0 key code: volumeup
and these scan codes correspond not to my keymap (0x06, 0x07, 0x08), but to /lib/udev/keymaps/force-release/common-volume-keys:
    [ajaxas@r2d2 ~]$ cat /lib/udev/keymaps/force-release/common-volume-keys
    0xa0 #mute
    0xae #volume down
    0xb0 #volume up
So I assume, udev uses force-release rules before other keymaps and maps my Volume control keys to input/event0 (how? I couldn't find the rule!), which is more or less fine with me, but!
My Brightness control keys, mapped as 0x09 and 0x0A in the keymap, are reported by udev as:
    [root@r2d2 ajaxas]# /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event1
scan code: 0x10 key code: brightnessdown
scan code: 0x11 key code: brightnessup
If I change my keymap file (0x09 -> 0x10, 0x0A -> 0x11) and load keymap manually, nothing changes. And when I reboot with this changed keymap, udev reports this for my Brightness control keys:
    [root@r2d2 ajaxas]# /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event1
scan code: 0x10 key code: fn_f5
scan code: 0x11 key code: fn_f6
Again, nothing works, and keys are not reported as Brightness control keys anymore.
As I said earlier, updating udev doesn't help.
    Could somebody please help me?
EDIT: added keyboard driver (evdev) reference.
